Intrigued by where Chelsea fit into nakh's metric, and what their equivalent game is
― imago, Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:11 (twelve years ago)
Chelsea are something stodgily effective that no one really likes, so turkey.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:14 (twelve years ago)
Err obviously turkey isn't game, but chicken is in this schema so whatever.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:18 (twelve years ago)
chelsea's victory was comparable to inter's or (although much more elegant) milan's in 2007, a team of canny veterans with a very clear identity who reverted to type in the cl, this united side has no identity at all, they have been extensively redrilled by moyes in a way that has purged ferguson's own imprint
they have beaten plenty of crappy sides this season but their record vs good ones is consistently terrible, their only win was a narrow 1-0 at home with an arsenal squad suffering from a virus outbreak
don't think they have better than a 25%, 30% chance of progressing vs any of the remainding sides
less likely to win it than liverpool 2005
― nakhchivan, Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:19 (twelve years ago)
chelsea should have gone next to dortmund and atleti (whose chances are being slightly overplayed)
― nakhchivan, Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:20 (twelve years ago)
xps
Of course I'm not saying United are likely to win the CL, I'd bet on them to be eliminated in the next round by whoever they play
Just like I would have bet on Chelsea to be eliminated by Napoli after that first leg, on Barca to beat them over two legs and on Bayern to beat them in the final. Nevertheless, sometimes shit happens.

then it's a falsification of history to pretend any of those chelsea results were particularly unlikely, whatever the GET INVOLVED crowd were texting in at the time
they caught barcelona on a downslope (and who had a poor record vs chelsea) and bayern who were still slightly callow, i'd have given them probably a 25% chance vs barcelona and at least 30% of winning a single game vs bayern
this current united side have maybe a 10% chance of progressing vs bayern
― nakhchivan, Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:31 (twelve years ago)

Man Utd vs Bayern
All a bit meh tbh. Barca/Atleti will be a tedious foulfest. Madrid will wreck Dortmund unfortunately. Bayern will wreck Man Utd.PSG vs Chelsea might be interesting.

pretty excited to play Chelsea. their attack should not be too much of a problem for Paris. but it will take hard work to get through their defence.
― AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 21 March 2014 11:55 (twelve years ago)
not the greatest draw, a domestic tie, a repeat of last year, a mismatch and the other one contains chelsea

'I came into this competition as a really inexperienced manager in the Champions League but we have done well and now we have the ultimate test in Bayern Munich,' he said.
'I am really looking forward to coming up against Pep, it is the first time I have done but I have no doubt I will be doing it many times in the future.

These hopeful/hopeless punts look more Rangers in Europe 2008 than Manchester United at home in CL.
Moyes has instilled in his players a firm belief that they are inferior to top teams and can only hang on and hope for a break.
They don't even break away like a United team. Such fear of committing forward.

I persuaded a guy at work to put a pound on a Utd/Athletico double. I'm starting to think the 45/1 he got was a bit stingy.
― Berk errs Gibbs/Ox (aldo), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 19:18 (twelve years ago)
Genuine lol at the sight of Fellaini suddenly finding himself the most advanced player on the pitch and just blinking like a rabbit in headlights.
The roars of Old Trafford excitement every time the ball crosses the half way line are getting embarrassing.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 19:22 (twelve years ago)
Wellbeck ffs hit the ball son

Bayern in possession there and every Utd player but Wellbeck was in his own penalty area there. Proper bus parking.
Giggs is playing! He just took a shit corner after being Just Another Body for 44 minutes.
Bayern are shite too.
― two bunny rabbits on mushrooms singing Proclaimers songs (onimo), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 19:34 (twelve years ago)
Bayern have totally dominated this with the exception of about 10mins before the end and look completely comfortable, wtf.

That Welbeck miss was horrible to watch, you just knew he was gonna fluff it. Enjoying this - Bayern haven't been good enough yet to really dent Utd's optimism and Old Trafford is getting lairy, but what with Fellaini losing the ball every five minutes and Jones skittering about as if the pitch were an ice rink, there's a wonderful sense of impending disaster about this whole thing.
― Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 19:42 (twelve years ago)
Comfortable and mostly unthreatening. They should be creating more with such possession.
― two bunny rabbits on mushrooms singing Proclaimers songs (onimo), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 19:43 (twelve years ago)
not watching bayern but that is what guardiola teams do in later stage away games in the champions league, with the exception of the 2-2 vs arsenal in 2010, they mostly just circulate possession endlessly as a defensive stratagem and then try for a late goal once the opposition are shot
― maxresdefault.jpg (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 19:47 (twelve years ago)
barca atleti not that high in quality, one messi pass to iniesta aside, pinto is a disgrace as usual and piqué and costa have both left with injuries, bartra looks fast and quickwitted but diego ribas for atleti is so different to costa that their entire game has had to change
― maxresdefault.jpg (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 19:49 (twelve years ago)

― he is looking only the ball (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 19:51 (twelve years ago)
Not much. Welbeck missed a doozy, but otherwise kinda boring. There's a result here for Utd if they can keep their discipline at the back.
