most enjoyable utd game for a while

this season, by a mile

Number None, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 21:03 (twelve years ago)

Really need another goal. If Moyes makes them sit back for the last half hour, you just know we'll throw it away in injury time

yeah, we're reverting to type now

Historic Single still on.

Funniest end to the season would be Liverpool getting fourth and Man U winning the CL to knock them out.

Hulk's goal tonight was terrific.

he will do that occasionally

Whinge and preen the rest of the time though.

Moyes really does = Pope Benedict XVI

tsrobodo, Thursday, 20 March 2014 02:16 (twelve years ago)

Which obviously means that Klopp is the next United manager.

tsrobodo, Thursday, 20 March 2014 02:16 (twelve years ago)

If we're talking popes: Moyes' fist looks remarkably removed from the rest of his body. Separate entity altogether iirc. God, the fucking pope, some screwed up gravitational pull or a divine, invisible string is pulling it up; but it's not Moyes himself raising his fist. Not consciously, not with intent at least. It' resembles an autist's way of trying to behave in the way that seems to be expected from you. Clueless, forced, helpless. World Press Photo '14. If it doesn't fit a category, invent a new category for it.

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 20 March 2014 02:31 (twelve years ago)

(Can't fucking believe a fucking photo of Moyes pulled me back into an ilx footy thread after all this fucking time tbh)

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 20 March 2014 02:33 (twelve years ago)

I was thinking more in terms of having baggy deep set eyes and failing to impress after succeeding a guy that achieved a lot and was widely revered and possibly being a Nazi but I guess ghostly fist works too.

i am at least somewhat concerned about this possibility

gbx, Thursday, 20 March 2014 11:05 (twelve years ago)

Man Utd won't win the CL. They are one of the 2 worst teams left in the last 8.

Also LFC will finish top 3.

I'd like to see
RM - Chelsea
BM - Atleti
PSG - Barca
Man Utd - Dortmund

Think these are the best match ups although Dortmund are the only team left I can see Utd having a chance against.

pandemic, Thursday, 20 March 2014 11:25 (twelve years ago)

I'm not getting carried away by last night's result. We were still basically shit and there was little or no evidence that Moyes had any tactical plan other than "get it up them" but I can see us beating Dortmund and mayyybe sneaking past PSG or Chelsea in a semi-final. I mean it's not totally inconceivable. Any of the other four should annihilate us though

that's like saying parboiled dog entrails are one of the two worst things on a menu along with chateaubriand, game pie and roast guinea fowl

nakhchivan, Thursday, 20 March 2014 15:15 (twelve years ago)

blame the chef

Number None, Thursday, 20 March 2014 15:27 (twelve years ago)

Guinea fowl is not as delicious as one might hope iirc

imago, Thursday, 20 March 2014 15:29 (twelve years ago)

...so, Atletico Madrid or something

imago, Thursday, 20 March 2014 15:30 (twelve years ago)

Chelsea will never come back from being down 3-1 against Napoli after the first leg, they'll have to come out and attack and that will play right into Mazzarri's hands.

No way Di Matteo's Chelsea will beat Guardiola's Barcelona over two legs, they will be demolished.

Chelsea have no chance of surviving at the Camp Nou down to ten men with Terry sent off in the 37th minute, it'll be a bloodbath.

Bayern will destroy Chelsea in a final played in Munich, Chelsea has no chance.

anonanon, Thursday, 20 March 2014 15:33 (twelve years ago)

guinea fowl is very delicious iirc(wid)

Blandford Forum, Thursday, 20 March 2014 15:33 (twelve years ago)

chelsea were a team of hardened cl veterans playing a sort of hardcore defensive football and even then they were very lucky not to concede a couple of penalties vs barca and benefitted from some substandard play by them and bayern, if you think man utd are comparably likely to win the cl you don't understand football

nakhchivan, Thursday, 20 March 2014 15:48 (twelve years ago)

bayern

madrid barcelona

psg

atleti dortmund

united

nakhchivan, Thursday, 20 March 2014 15:50 (twelve years ago)

Guinea fowl is like quail, it basically tastes like chicken except it's smaller and bonier and more of a pain in the arse to eat. Probably better than parboiled dog entrails admittedly.

Matt DC, Thursday, 20 March 2014 15:51 (twelve years ago)

Guinea fowl is not as delicious as one might hope iirc

depends whether you melt Snickers over it iirc

fhingerbhangra (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:00 (twelve years ago)

its depth of flavour is far superior to chicken, and I like chicken.

grouse

teal woodcock

woodpidgeon

guineafowl pheasant

Intrigued by where Chelsea fit into nakh's metric, and what their equivalent game is

imago, Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:11 (twelve years ago)

Chelsea are something stodgily effective that no one really likes, so turkey.

Matt DC, Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:14 (twelve years ago)

Err obviously turkey isn't game, but chicken is in this schema so whatever.

Matt DC, Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:18 (twelve years ago)

chelsea's victory was comparable to inter's or (although much more elegant) milan's in 2007, a team of canny veterans with a very clear identity who reverted to type in the cl, this united side has no identity at all, they have been extensively redrilled by moyes in a way that has purged ferguson's own imprint

they have beaten plenty of crappy sides this season but their record vs good ones is consistently terrible, their only win was a narrow 1-0 at home with an arsenal squad suffering from a virus outbreak

don't think they have better than a 25%, 30% chance of progressing vs any of the remainding sides

less likely to win it than liverpool 2005

nakhchivan, Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:19 (twelve years ago)

chelsea should have gone next to dortmund and atleti (whose chances are being slightly overplayed)

nakhchivan, Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:20 (twelve years ago)

xps

Of course I'm not saying United are likely to win the CL, I'd bet on them to be eliminated in the next round by whoever they play

Just like I would have bet on Chelsea to be eliminated by Napoli after that first leg, on Barca to beat them over two legs and on Bayern to beat them in the final. Nevertheless, sometimes shit happens.

also just providing fatalistic lfc dudes out there with a snapshot of spurs supporter thought process circa 2012

anonanon, Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:26 (twelve years ago)

then it's a falsification of history to pretend any of those chelsea results were particularly unlikely, whatever the GET INVOLVED crowd were texting in at the time

they caught barcelona on a downslope (and who had a poor record vs chelsea) and bayern who were still slightly callow, i'd have given them probably a 25% chance vs barcelona and at least 30% of winning a single game vs bayern

this current united side have maybe a 10% chance of progressing vs bayern

nakhchivan, Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:31 (twelve years ago)

I like turkey
