United inevitably settling for Fellaini with the weary pragmatism of a plain bride in a Victorian novel.

A Macclesfield fan became the club's first 'Pay to Play' guest in the club's friendly against Stoke City on Saturday.
James Gorfin, 40, paid £10,000 to do what most football fans dream of - spending a week as a member of the team's squad, being put through sprint drills, shooting practice, short-sided matches, before making a substitute appearance against the Potters.
"I think everyone reckons they could do better when they're watching a game," he tells the Macclesfield Express. "You think you'd have loads of time on the ball but it's not as easy as that. It's pretty mental how quick the game is, and I did get smashed by one of the Stoke lads when I got one of my passes away."

£10k's a bit steep but lop a zero off and that's starting to get towards value territory imo

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 14:12 (twelve years ago)

I think my wife would Shawx me before any of the Stoke lads got near me if I spent £10k to pretend to play football.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 15:34 (twelve years ago)

If Michael Owen was all pace then why isn't Theo Walcott better at football?

not lazy but clowning (Suedey 2), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 15:37 (twelve years ago)

ps suarez otm

I know if Arsenal sign him he'll fuck us over too, but I think it's all part of a clever plan where Arsenal fans are made to wait forever for a big signing to the point they'll take anything because they don't care anymore. Still wish they'd got Higuain tho

not lazy but clowning (Suedey 2), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 15:39 (twelve years ago)

it's kind of heartbreaking and also a bit embarrassing the way he's been backed to the hilt over the past couple of years despite clearly being a cunt for all to see

bingo

Hamburglar's smiling too (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 15:59 (twelve years ago)

You'd think he'd be a bit more grateful really, all things considered. It's probably why no better club than Arsenal seems interested in him.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:01 (twelve years ago)

Heh. It is a bit surprising that atm it's Arsenal and no-one else.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:06 (twelve years ago)

if bale goes........ i mean, either flank, soldado, width, isnt it OOOOH

Dr Peter Who? (darraghmac), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:11 (twelve years ago)

xp it's surprising that in 2011 it was Liverpool and no-one else, when I put it like that

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:12 (twelve years ago)

many have shopped in the Eredivisie and lived to regret it. Plus the biting etc.

Number None, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:19 (twelve years ago)

tbf that was just a one-off

twitter says Spurs have signed Capoue...

Number None, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:50 (twelve years ago)

Might have been the only position we didn't need to strengthen. He's good value at 10m Euro.

Inte Regina Lund eller nån, mitt namn är (ShariVari), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:59 (twelve years ago)

idk about that, paulinho means less reliance on sandro but it was still sizeable esp for someone coming back off long term injury

r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:09 (twelve years ago)

i guess that means parker and thudd will be sold?

mizzell, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:20 (twelve years ago)

idk at 433 its more reshaping a squad to reflect cover needs

Dr Peter Who? (darraghmac), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:43 (twelve years ago)

i'm assuming avb will use holtby and sigurdsson more in the midfield 3 than the forward 3, so he has a rotation of capoue, dembele, holtby, paulinho, sandro, sigurdsson. can't really see parker and thudd getting much time.

mizzell, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:48 (twelve years ago)

Holtby in the front three imo

Dr Peter Who? (darraghmac), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:56 (twelve years ago)

If PSV defend their 2-0 lead tonight, we will draw either Zenit, AC Milan, Arsenal, Schalke or Lyon.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 18:04 (twelve years ago)

We still need a CL thread.. Will start one after Fridays draw

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 18:08 (twelve years ago)

theyll probably buy a fast recovery cb like if not actually vladdy c and capoué will be 4th choice cb until kaboul returns

One Liverpool player will be on dis ting: Champions League 2013/14

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 18:10 (twelve years ago)

no dogs, no irish, no spurs

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 18:12 (twelve years ago)

anyone who watches a lot of ligue 1 got an opinion on Capoue?

anonanon, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 20:35 (twelve years ago)

Ok, we cruised past Zulte Waregem w 0-3.

Not sure what team I hope we draw. Arsenal and Lyon for the ILX massive. Though of the five, Lyon might actually be the least strong, too?

Where are the Frenchies anyway?
