can't you see it's the music, he just wants to hear the champs league music. he could hear it six times at arsenal. six times. how can you deprive any footballer of that, you... you monsters

r|t|c, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 22:24 (twelve years ago)

I'd have waited three days to see who they get in the qualifying round, tbh.

Inte Regina Lund eller nån, mitt namn är (ShariVari), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 22:32 (twelve years ago)

the content of the clause is a sort of beckettish imponderable, liverpool will try to delay as much as possible cuz they need someone other than arsenal to buy him and there's a chance that could happen if he is the last remaining caviar blini on the salver amidst the usual late august turds

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 22:47 (twelve years ago)

Rip Arsenal
Rip Suarez
Lol

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 22:50 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I don't usually wish broken legs on people but...

Arsenal are signing the most non-Arsenal player in history
Suarez is making the biggest dick move in his career

Suarez going to Arsenal is proof that God exists. And that God is a nihilist wanker.

t/s arsenal sanctimony vs rawkite voodoo effigies

Nilmar calling me names again.

ewar woowar (or something), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 22:58 (twelve years ago)

yeah i noted before that you weren't on rawk, but violence talk is quite rawkish, especially when of the various criminal things he has done over recent years, it takes a dispute over the interpretation of a contractual clause to break the spell

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 23:03 (twelve years ago)

Surely this clause would be public verbatim by now if it existed as suarez claims

"history" meaning the nine years of therapy it took for wenger to get over the neville-reyes shoeing

That was a fuckin disgrace tho, and marked the start of his later career as a hatchet cunt

Gomis to Newcastle seems to have fallen through.

Wonder if Spurs will be after Willian again if Anzhi have put the first team up for sale.

"history" meaning the nine years of therapy it took for wenger to get over the neville-reyes shoeing

Yeah come on, Suarez would have fitted in so well at Vieira-era Arsenal/

Matt DC, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 09:41 (twelve years ago)

Gomis to Liverpool, is that the implication? Wouldn't be a bad shout I don't think, he'd do a job in the epl and tbh we don't have any other focus than that, this year.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 10:04 (twelve years ago)

@_PaulHayward How about: the new Dr Who puts Suarez in his Tardis and takes him back to be managed by Bill Shankly, just for one day. "Sit down, son..."

Bellend.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 10:08 (twelve years ago)

Conflicted over Suarez tbh. While I really, really want him to stay, put objectively of course he should be in the CL. If it's as he says and he's already done his 'one more year' then I have some sympathy; he did his bit last season and its not like we're on the brink of getting there.

If it's to be to Arsenal, I kind of like the idea because I get to see Nal more than I see Pool, and lord knows they need a bit of nasty and cheaty about them. And other than the lunatic bid (and LS himself) the deal's being done right afaict. The obvious rub is that if we're to displace any of the top four, it's them.

They need to pay properly though. I dunno why they're not. As has been pointed out, there's absolutely no reason for Liverpool not to drag this out to midnight on deadline day - and even to January tbh, he'll still be available for the CL knockouts.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 10:13 (twelve years ago)

Aaaaaand Meulensteen has been fired at Anzhi. He really left his mark in those 16 days though, I'm sure.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 10:18 (twelve years ago)

Why are you conflicted?

- 'Wah you promised me I could leave if we didn't get in the CL' is almost certainly a bullshit line peddled by the agent, it always is. Why would any Chairman make such a promise to their star player?

- Suarez has gone from 'wah they don't understand me in England I want to leave' to 'I just want to go to Arsenal' in a space of like a month.

- Arsenal is a dumb move even for Suarez, given that a year of good behaviour and good performance at Liverpool could see a much better club come in for him.

- No one should 'objectively' been the CL.

- In any case he's not the player Arsenal need, really, if they're going to continue to be as brittle as they have been the past few seasons.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 10:30 (twelve years ago)

Agree with most of that tbh - boils down to something like 'he's too good for us', which is pretty horrible; now I know how you lot've felt for the past decade+

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 10:36 (twelve years ago)

James McClean going to Wigan, didn't he used to be big news?

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 10:49 (twelve years ago)

suarez clause discussion is v curious. if either party were that sure of it they'd surely have made the wording public by now.

don't agree with you tho matt- clubs have often included clauses they hope won't be activated but the player, in a position of strength, demands and gets. a release clause with a set figure in the event of non qualification for the cl and a bid from a cl club seems very likely indeed.

otoh, a clause that only compels lfc to 'consider' or 'talk about' selling him seems so pointless (from suarez's point of view) as to be totally unlikely. both parties acknowledge a figure of 40m. that accepted, that it exists only as a 'figure beyond which we can still say sod off' seems ridiculous.

Dr Peter Who? (darraghmac), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 10:58 (twelve years ago)

This isn't a clause they're talking about though, the "you said I could leave if we didn't qualify for the CL" is a vague "promise" from Liverpool and separate from the contract issue.

The £40m release clause seems to be the bit no one really understands.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:03 (twelve years ago)

Just ftr I don't actually wish a broken leg on him but I do want him out asap. He's easily the most talented player I've ever seen in a red shirt so it's kind of heartbreaking and also a bit embarrassing the way he's been backed to the hilt over the past couple of years despite clearly being a cunt for all to see.

ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:15 (twelve years ago)

£40m would have been very low for it to be an actual release clause, which makes me think the club are right on that (hasn't the player acknowledged that anyway). Not uncommon to fudge something in a contract so as to get the main agreement reached, in the hope that you never have to use it.

The promise also seems like a nonsense, or at any rate encouraging noises that've been misinterpreted, most likely wilfully. But it's beside the point when the guy's going public like this, bridges have been burnt now.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:18 (twelve years ago)

"£40m would have been very low for it to be an actual release clause"

no it wouldn't! only through bale-bid lenses, which nobody was wearing last year

Dr Peter Who? (darraghmac), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:19 (twelve years ago)

According to Sky Sports Barca have put out a bid on David Luiz, but it got rejected.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:20 (twelve years ago)

also idk how far back that goes or something, but is suarez so clearly above mcmanaman or fowler or owen or idk alonso, hamann, hyypia, torres?

Dr Peter Who? (darraghmac), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:20 (twelve years ago)

It is through Torres lenses, Bale's got nothing to do with this. Anyway you set the release clause at an aspirational figure surely, then if someone's mad enough to pay in full, great; if it's lower you get a negotiation.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:22 (twelve years ago)

Would Suarez have agreed to a release clause of £60m, or so, though? He'd have known that there's not much chance of it being activated and Liverpool would still have been able to block any lower bids.

Inte Regina Lund eller nån, mitt namn är (ShariVari), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:27 (twelve years ago)

Well I'm 37 and yeah, not saying 'the best' but definitely the most extravagantly leftfield talent. xp to darragh.

ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:35 (twelve years ago)

No other player leaves your jaw on the floor as often. Owen, for one , wouldn't be fit to lace his boots.

ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:37 (twelve years ago)

Gerrard maybe

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:39 (twelve years ago)

In terms of pure talent I'd say 1. Suarez 2. Barnes 3. Dalglish 4. Beardsley 5. Fowler. Prob litmanen too but he hardly enjoyed his imperial phase with us.

ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:41 (twelve years ago)

In terms of 'the best' it's a toss-up between Gerrard and dalglish.

ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 11:42 (twelve years ago)

Owen, for one , wouldn't be fit to lace his boots.

I know it's been a while since we did this but when Owen was good he was amazing. Both have identical games/goals ratios for Liverpool.

pace and complete lethality tbfttl

but yeah ok not extravagantly talented, but if that's all then sure add luis garcia and harry kewell in!
