I think it's worth a punt for his scoring record. Whatever issue there is with his knee doesn't seem to have prevented him playing much (40+ games in each of his last two seasons).

We signed John Hartson despite him failing a medical with his knee at Rangers and he never missed a game with it, though he missed loads due to back problems and being a lazy bastard.

morata could be loaned but after this sumer's u21 where he proved himself the best spanish #9 prospect since torres in 2002, he isn't likely to be sold, and in the event that he were sold it would be with a buyout clause like carvajal had (€5m sale to bayer last summer, madrid exercised option to buy him back for €7m this summer)

if you look at this, and disregard this summer's transfers where the outcome isn't yet known, the only ones from the top dozen or so transfers are those where they were virtually guaranteed to succeed

zidane -- easily the best player in the world and did not depend upon athletic gifts that could disappear at any time (like kaká)
cristiano ronaldo -- 24 year old ballon d'or holder, moving to a more familiar country, supreme athlete, an almost unprecedented narcissistic commitment to his own conditioning and improvement
buffon -- the best goalkeeping prospect in living memory, 23 yrs old, moving within the same country

as good as bale is, he isn't as good as they were and he has all the risk factors too (dependent on athleticism, moving to unfamiliar country and a much more pressurized environment)

the sums mentioned in all the main uk and spanish papers are so high that levy's decision is almost made for him

this essentially says 'sorry that's too much money, no deal', right?

the sums are probably true or truish but madrid might want to delay the payments over a number of years, and given that real madrid aren't go to be able to sell land to the the municipal govt for inflated prices any more, levy will be reluctant to accept it

I guess I'm assuming Levy buys a Lamela-type replacement if he sells Bale. In which case Madrid throwing more money at us is just throwing more money at Roma/whoever so it's kind of moot
