Properly dodgy club, Sheriff, even by the standards of the region.

Zagreb get 90th minute winner, reminding me why I rarely bet these days.

Inte Regina Lund eller nån, mitt namn är (ShariVari), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 20:33 (twelve years ago)

you had cash on a game involving dinamo zagreb?

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 20:36 (twelve years ago)

unless you were reliably informed that they would lose 0-7, that doesnt seem like the most reliable investment

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 20:37 (twelve years ago)

That's true. Didn't put any money on it in the end but was tempted.

Inte Regina Lund eller nån, mitt namn är (ShariVari), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 20:42 (twelve years ago)

Ahh that was briljant. Dominated 90mins with frivolous football. Not seen this the last ten years, honestly.

A 17y old in his first year, homegrown winger, Bakkali, was man of the match. Revelation. And finally we have a good defense, Rekik on loan from Man City and Bruma, both flawless.

LBI, cool it now. Ok guys, but srsly happy.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 20:54 (twelve years ago)

Zakaria Bakkali (Liège, 26 January 1996) is a Belgian professional football from Moroccon descent player who currently plays for PSV Eindhoven. He's a youth exponent from the club.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 21:27 (twelve years ago)

Sheriff pretty much runs everything in Transdniestr - and anything it doesn't run has to pay protection money / a tithe to them, afaict. It's the closest thing Europe has to an actual gangster state.

Their stadium was meant to cost $200m, though if the actual cost was a tenth of that I'd be surprised.

The stadium opening ceremony included performances from Dizzee Rascal, The Corrs and Jose Quitongo

Jose Quitongo ex of Hamilton Academical.

Inte Regina Lund eller nån, mitt namn är (ShariVari), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 22:48 (twelve years ago)

Jose Quitongo, star of my favourite football anecdote ever (posted several times on this board)

Talking of football anecdotes, I won a pub quiz this by knowing, amongst other things, that the Azerbaijani national stadium is named after the linesman who allowed England's iffy "goal" in the 1966 World Cup Final.

Round-up of nonsense currently circulating:

Rudnevs to Stoke / Celtic
Damiao to Southampton for 26m Euro
Bernard to Shakhtar for £22m because Arsenal wouldn't go above £20m
Rondon to Liverpool

Caulker on way to cardiff?

clique- your heels, together (darraghmac), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 13:48 (twelve years ago)

That can't happen unless we have another CB lined up.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 13:53 (twelve years ago)

I'd rather it didn't happen at all.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 13:54 (twelve years ago)

Rudnevs said he wanted to stay in germany
caulker leaving would make me sad. all i want is some spurs youth products in the first team.
we have the romanian dude lined up (though i thought it was interesting he played in the CL yesterday)

thought caulker would be next to blow after excelling at swansea but he was pretty shonky last season. another season playing regular games might be best for him

this CHVRCHES fellow appears to be an elegant libero type which i guess suggests more grimacing vertonghen at lb and idk maybe cover for sandro at a pinch

r|t|c, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 14:47 (twelve years ago)

last night I saw Charlton reserves at Dartford. we had a player called Jack Munns, played 90 minutes. was at Spurs until this summer. really hope we give him a contract coz he's ridiculously talented for a Championship player - the fact he's approximately 5'3" (no exaggeration) is presumably why he's trialling with us and not breaking onto the Spurs bench. doubtless the ILX Spurs faithful know of him fondly

Woah, Charlton reserves at Dartford, that's real. I thought I was doing well with a Wolves friendly. Young Munns does not look quite so real.

"The Humber bridge used to fascinate me, and what used to fascinate me about it is why would someone want to join North Ferriby and South Ferriby? Put them two parts of the map together with this wonderful structure, instead of going all the way inland and all the way back? It's a simple enough idea, but it takes a lot of foresight to achieve it."

amazing

"I look at Southend pier. It's a mile and a half long, right on the Thames estuary. And I think: 'Why do people do that?' It's just to show what you can achieve. So we've been along the prom a couple of times. We've had walks and warm-downs. We've had training sessions on the beach. And I've inquired to Southend council to see if we can get a free run along the pier – you have to pay about seven quid to get on it. So if we do a warm-down there it'll be a relaxing day, they'll go on a mile-and-a-half jog and end in the middle of the Thames estuary. What's crazy about that? What's stunty about that? It's about using the local terrain."

uh so about that Chiriches, a prison cell intervention from Gigi Becali and now the deal is off

anonanon, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 16:11 (twelve years ago)

Mihai Stoica (Steaua's manager) announced tonight on Fanatik Show on Digisport, that the transfer will not be done because Gigi Becali will not accept the offer coming from Tottenham: "There is an offer of 8 million Euros for Chiriches . I Don't know where Gigi saw the statement (that Spurs want him right know and will not wait for Steaua to qualify in the UCL group stage) but he called me and told me: "Tottenham will not wait? but who is Tottenham? They can not wait another day? Then he is no longer for sale. That's it! My name is Gigi Becali, I won't accept this ".

Watching from the sidelines are Bale's former club Southampton, who are in line to pocket 2.5% of any transfer fee.

But that pales in comparison to the 15% sell-on they are believed to have agreed at the time of his 2007 move to White Hart Lane.

Southampton waived that clause at a time when they were in financial difficulty, instead receiving around £1.5m and goalkeeper Tommy Forecast, and now stand to earn just £2m as opposed to £13m if Real sign Bale.

mizzell, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 18:01 (twelve years ago)

they waived it in late 2010 when bale was already being valued by levy at over £40m

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 18:02 (twelve years ago)

this is probably a strategy from epl sides when buying from the champo or below, or from badly run clubs abroad......lower the upfront fee in return for conditional or delayed payments in the knowldedge that they are likely to accept a smaller lump sum when they get into financial difficulties a few months later

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 18:05 (twelve years ago)

Of all the dumb moves we made over the past decade, the Forecast deal still seems like the dumbest by some distance.

Big Tommy Forecast. He is tall, and on a positive note let's assume he will grow into the role after first-day nerves. Shall we help those scrabbling hicks, or is that scribbling hacks, at the GET with those handy synonyms: foresee, foretell, forewarn, prognosticate, guess... how apposite. He spent half the game licking his lips and sipping water like a nervous laboratory rat hyped up on a diet of salt 'n' shake crisps and Fanta. He came, he stayed, he flapped, he flipped, he caught, he was overwrought and spread happiness among the travelling Creweites. His first contribution was to let a cross squish through his hands and he didn't make a save of any sort until way, way into the second half, when a shot hit his legs. He was noticeably less woeful when stood in front of the away supporters.

I really should start reading Cod Almighty again.

William Bloody Swygart, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 20:20 (twelve years ago)

Tommy Forecast. Tommy. Forecast... I just... I mean it's so unlikely.
