Also re: Cesc, how "on" is "looks like it's on"? I though Sid Lowe : Man In the Know was saying he wouldn't leave Barca if they paid him to go

http://www.brentwoodschool.co.uk/store/news/Ed-Woodward-Man-Utd.jpeg

Woodward, 40, went to the same school as Frank Lampard and is a neighbour of Gary Lineker but his background was outside football until - while working as an investment banker for JP Morgan, having studied physics at Bristol University - he assisted the Glazers' takeover of United in 2005. He is pledging a more open era at United in terms of communicating with the media and supporters.

In his previous role Woodward masterminded United's extraordinary commercial expansion, via a series of regional sponsorship deals, and he believes the club are "only at the foot of the mountain" in terms of maximising income - and that United's transfer power will grow and grow as revenue continues to soar.

"Because we're popular in so many countries we can take [major deals] to 100 countries. We have partnerships with mobile networks in 44 countries. We've done the same with credit cards. Our financial services business is in 20 countries. Our soft drinks is only up to single digits."

"It's like a matrix of countries and then categories. The categories we look at - there are obvious ones that tend to be big in terms of sponsorship, like airlines, cars, financial services,. But there's a long, long tail. Watches. We've identified 94 different categories. I'm not trying to say we can do 94 x 100 deals... but that's why it's a mountain. There's a long way to go. We do a lot of research and we believe we are the number 1 television programme, globally, on an annual basis. We can't compete with the World Cup or the Olympics but on an annual TV ratings basis [it is] Man United. Two years ago 4.2bn people watched us."

That fucking spiel though, that's what elite football is now and it's not going away. Utd ever finishing fifth again, in the like five years domestic leagues have left, is inconceivable and you, Ed Woodward, must take your share of the blame.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 19:21 (twelve years ago)

fuck that, blame the millions of idiots who will actually buy a man utd watch.

Bobby Charlton tribute

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 18 July 2013 10:49 (twelve years ago)

Chelsea would unquestionably be a much better team with TWP as their lone striker but the idea of adding him to the Chelsea dressing room alongside EBRJT and Frankie Lamps Baby is truly horrifying, especially if Mourinho doesn't work out for whatever reason.

Matt DC, Thursday, 18 July 2013 10:58 (twelve years ago)

Unquestionably better than with torres as a lone striker, i guess

But they could buy any number of other players that are neither, or recruit lukaku.

I really, really want that Mata/Rooney swap to happen. And to get Fabregas. But I feel I will be disappointed.

Actually, might as well chuck Ronaldo and Bale in there too.

Pffft and where would they fit with carrick

mundane peaceable username (darraghmac), Thursday, 18 July 2013 11:22 (twelve years ago)

And Fellaini and Baines and Luiz. We can work out the details later.

Hamburglar's smiling too (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 18 July 2013 11:23 (twelve years ago)

not impossible to imagine twp playing his best fitba since 2004 if he goes there tbh

otoh i am talking mindless bollix as there's literally been no evidence to suggest he can usefully play one up top

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 July 2013 11:32 (twelve years ago)

I think he'd be pretty good there but it's such a cowardly signing really. You've tempted Lukaku back, let him roam free.

Negredo, 27,has agreed a four-year-deal worth a basic £75,000-a-week and is expected to join up with City’s pre-season tour in Hong Kong early next week.

The two clubs have been haggling over a fee for some time and Sevilla claimed that the deal was £21.5m rising to a possible £24.5m.

"The chance that he goes right now is one per cent. In the last 15 days I have lowered the price by €0, I'm very generous."

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 July 2013 14:51 (twelve years ago)

ive sorta liked negredo for years, at least as being superior to llorente as spains third choice #9, he was targeted by various midtablish epl clubs in the £10m range in 2008/2009

however it is worth noting that the only other team to bid this time were west ham, and that buying him a month after navas suggest he wasnt a priority for citeh

either they are selling dzeko or they now have two very good but not great players for the same role, and soon another potentially great one in jovetic

the most promising US ilxor has thrown the TOWEL IN (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Thursday, 18 July 2013 14:53 (twelve years ago)

While I wouldn't sniff at £75kpw myself, does it indicate that wages are maybe tailing off a bit? Insofar as you'd expect a headline to normally boast a six-figure sum?

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 18 July 2013 14:57 (twelve years ago)

negredo seems plausibly more dynamic than dzeko but given the number of euro big men that arent so big any more once they hit epl shores idk if the bird in the hand wasnt wiser

still have good vibes about city this year though

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 July 2013 14:59 (twelve years ago)

no it just suggests they have overpaid about £8m on the fee, west hams offer of £15m was the EUROPEAN price, but del nido (the levy of andalucia) has sensibly held out for the epl price

maicon alc

i) no eng lang media sources are saying it
ii) roma have just paid €4m for him (age 31)

Dzeko to spurs imo, the last cf reject we got off citeh worked out great

I'm getting a story about a dude getting angry about Dunga at a Brazilian wedding. What am I missing here?

Matt DC, Thursday, 18 July 2013 15:20 (twelve years ago)

Is it not that the first four things that google suggests for "Maicon alc" seem to be implying in four separate languages that he is an alcoholic? Pretty leading intro for a google search tbfttl

Third Rate Zoo Keepers With Tenth Rate Minds (Windsor Davies), Thursday, 18 July 2013 17:27 (twelve years ago)

Windsor blowing it open there. There's one Zambian article to that effect in English, so suggestion of a conspiracy of silence is off the mark. 90 beers though, I've never even come close to that.
