i said this on the WCQ thread, but we looked pretty poor last night (i didn't see the first half), barely able to string passes together or keep possession for a significant amount of time. Michael Bradley is the most important player on this team, imo. good points were landon who showed a lot of fight and was able to deliver quality set pieces and Goodson who got his head on a lot of balls in the area and looked really solid. Beasley kept finding himself with lots of room, making long runs and then pissing away the ball in a most deflating manner. i love Zusi's beard.

I was happy for them but I kept feeling it was more that Mexico looked absolutely dire more than we looked good. Not terribly dangerous in attack and we got particularly lucky in the back. Any team in good form would have easily equalized against us given the amount of space we gave Mexico at times. We definitely miss Bradley...

success in international football, or my perception of it, has really declined to now just being not as dire as the opposition

Mexico were superior the majority of the first half but seemed to have completely given up in the second. No enthusiasm for getting forward. Bradley's absence was huge, but Mexico had some absences too (I don't think Ochoa would have played the ball as badly as Corona did on EJ's goal, for starters). A friend said, "Beating Mexico is sort of a national pride big deal, beating ~this Mexico~ isn't really that big of a sporting deal." And I stick to that.

Should be interesting to see what Klinsi does with the remaining qualifiers as far as rosters/lineups. Not ever seeing Orozco again would be a good start.

What the hell has gone wrong with the Mexican national team? I thought big things were expected of them after the Gold Cup win in 2011 and the Olympics win last year.

Who the hell knows. Success going to their heads? Lack of self-confidence? Too much pressure? Sounds like they're bringing Víctor Manuel Vucetich in as the next coach (Tena only a caretaker?) so that might make for a change.

Besler, Gonzalez, Cameron, Goodson are the first choice CBs afaict, outside back positions are a lot more problematic

Lichaj back in the mix again is interesting, though pretty much everything I've read about him indicates he doesn't have what it takes. Luckily for him, though, none of the other pool fullbacks seem to have what it takes either.

Lichaj always looked "sub-standard" edging towards "pretty bad" whenever I saw him playing for Villa fwiw. And competition in Villa's back four hasn't exactly been stiff these last three years or so
