jon northcroft of the times today reporting that spurs "lead the race" for mccarthy, will pay up to 15m, and "are making signing english or british players a priority"

Aw man, how many times does that strategy have to fail?
― Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 13:14 (thirteen years ago)
well yeah quite. idk just seemed odd that the article should run so pointedly contrary to evidence/rumour

Lewandowski's advisor, Cezary Kucharski, has responded by accusing Dortmund of reneging on a deal to allow the forward to leave ahead of his contract's final year if offered a €25m fee in May. Kucharski argues that moving within the Bundesliga is the safest and most lucrative option.
“We don't want to change league,” Kucharski told Polish magazine Pilka Nozna. “Robert knows the Bundesliga and is perfectly fluent in German, so it's a low-risk transfer. But the most important thing is that he is well known in Germany. Robert can become the best paid player in the world while playing in Bundesliga; specifically in Bayern, which is incomparably bigger than Borussia. In Spain his commercial potential would be behind Messi and Ronaldo. In England maybe a bit higher. At City he would earn more on the pitch in the next season, but not much more. But after a year or two at Bayern he can be undisputed number one.
“Robert was never respected in Borussia. When we talked about extending his contract and I didn't agree a raise to €2m a year, I was told that we had exuberant expectations. Blaszczykowski and Piszczek's managers apparently agreed to such offers because they were convinced that with just a year of such money they would be set for life in Poland. I didn't check if this story was true, nor did I argue that Robert plays a different position and is younger than both, I just said he'd rather see his future in Monaco - he wants to buy a house there.”

Fair point xxp, you can't really see avb pitching a tent outside the Britannia to be first into Hughes' castoffs. Linked with Erik Lamela instead today, good player imo.
― Ismael Klata, Sunday, 16 June 2013 14:00 (thirteen years ago)
i have no idea what to expect from avb this summer tbh

He's a curio alright. This Baldini fella's the first time I can recall a manager pitching for a Director of Football.

This is absolutely hilarious and I'm eagerly anticipating Newcastle's rightful return to lolclub status.

"joe the volcano" is a fairly shit headline. i mean is there a pun on something i'm missing there or have they just sat around for ages then gone with that shit effort for want of anything better?

"Hey, we should get a director of football""Yeah, let's get someone in from St Etienne or Toulouse - a lot of our players are French""But wouldn't that undermine the manager?""True - who could we get with the least amount of managerial credibility and understanding of fancy European ways?""Hang on, let me check my Rolodex"

Impending exodus at PSV:
- Mertens v close to signing with Napoli- Lens offered a contract by Dynamo Kiev- Toivonen linked to Norwich but he's a bit on the fence and is waiting for a bigger club- Lots of clubs apparently after Strootman, which is entirely understandable
I've no problem with any of them leaving, with the big exception of Strootman. Really hope he will stay for one more year, play the WC and then go to ManU or Arsenal or something.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 17 June 2013 11:13 (thirteen years ago)
Kinnear claimed Pardew, who signed an eight-year contract last September, was "aware of the situation" and hoped the pair can meet up on Monday "over a bit of lunch" to discuss plans for the season ahead
It's not a case of 'like it or lump it'. If a close decision is to be made, though, and we're running out of time and it's something we have to do, whether that's adding meat or beef to the team, or pace in wide areas, or someone who can guarantee us 20 goals a season, I will buy those players.
I felt I'd gone past that and I wanted to get my teeth into something in the Premier League
― Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Monday, 17 June 2013 11:48 (thirteen years ago)
Jesus srsly have the club confirmed this

Breaking: Liverpool after Mkhtarian, Mignolet, Kolo Toure and Aspas according to Nult. No new information afaict, nor any indication why he's written this today.
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 17 June 2013 11:55 (thirteen years ago)
No wait, the £20m buyout clause might be new - though it is below the figures quoted previously, so I dunno.
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 17 June 2013 12:00 (thirteen years ago)
the only thing funnier than kinnear returning would be if he made the whole thing up in painstaking detail during a tony adams style boozefugue
― r|t|c, Monday, 17 June 2013 12:13 (thirteen years ago)
derek in would surely mean that ayre email about suarez was legit
― r|t|c, Monday, 17 June 2013 12:15 (thirteen years ago)
idg this luis alberto signing though, hasnt brendan got enough of those
― r|t|c, Monday, 17 June 2013 12:18 (thirteen years ago)
I don't know why he'd be so keen to choreograph to make clear the impetus came from Suarez - it's pretty bloody obvious 'sell Suarez' isn't the no.1 priority at Anfield
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 17 June 2013 12:19 (thirteen years ago)

Derek's very much in the Luis Figo/David Schwimmer mode. A good thing imo.
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 17 June 2013 12:53 (thirteen years ago)
most of the reporting around the derek stuff has said that he has been a target for a while and ideally is intended to play with suarez.
― Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Monday, 17 June 2013 13:00 (thirteen years ago)
suarez derek coutinho----- studge
?
― r|t|c, Monday, 17 June 2013 13:04 (thirteen years ago)
plus aspas, alberto, sterling, and downing and hendo on top whack and only just starting to look useful
looks way ott if suarez is to stay

Need a big squad to compete on one front
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 17 June 2013 13:11 (thirteen years ago)
presumed derek was to replace gerrard's goals from midfield of yore, basically.
i agree with you, largely, but that is definitely how all the derek stuff i've read has framed it, that basically the money is in place and the desire to sign him predates any certainty of suarez leaving.
but yeah, how many amc/f players does a team need? presumably they're also going to buy a central defender, if these signings actually work out it could be a really good side next season, but i dunno, no doubt some other area of the team will be found to be shit.
― Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Monday, 17 June 2013 13:13 (thirteen years ago)
liverpool is like a dodgy house, lucas will be found to be riddled with termites and there is rising damp at left and right back.
― Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Monday, 17 June 2013 13:14 (thirteen years ago)
Owners sinking it all into decking and a new boat for the driveway.
