Man the Mexico fans around us were PISSED OFF about that. I couldn't tell if they were angry at the ref, Marquez, or both.

Chant of the night: Estados Unidos jamas ser vencidos!

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Thursday, 12 February 2009 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

My bar prediction is that it will be weird but fun

bar prediction otm.

peepin' it causeative (dan m), Thursday, 12 February 2009 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

there was the ever-present crypto-racism (i.e. "mow my lawn") bullshit directed at the Mexicans, but thankfully that stuff is dying and gets shouted down really fast

peepin' it causeative (dan m), Thursday, 12 February 2009 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

also Mexico fans at the airport today want Sven to die, basically

peepin' it causeative (dan m), Thursday, 12 February 2009 21:22 (seventeen years ago)

my favorite tidbit
As with previous encounters, passions ran high after the match, with U.S. defender Frankie Hejduk receiving a slap to the face from an unnamed Mexican official. Hejduk was unscarred and unfazed after the match, calling the altercation "a love tap."

Over 50,000 in Montreal tonight for Impact v. Santos Laguna in the Champions League, contrast that with just over 10,000 in the same competition for Houston v. Atlante yesterday.

three weeks pass...

kind of getting stoked for tonight

jergins, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

UARRRGHGH I'm super stoked but the 10.30 start time is going to make it impossible for me to go out to a bar & watch, plus it'd take me an hour to get home after the game. So far, no one I know has admitted to staying home to watch it quietly.

Laurel have you ever used espn360 to watch games? It might be an option.

Thanks, Dan, but the laptop belongs to my roommate and the wifi belongs to whichever neighboring network we're piggybacking on at that moment, and usually is only good in 40-second chunks before we have to switch networks.

Sorry to shoot down a good suggestion but I basically have no media/electronics options at home. I was fine with that until televised sports became A THING in my life.

Ah, too bad.

Anyway, I'm interested to see who gets a start tonight. I'd really like to see Maurice Edu and Jose Torres get some time because of their recent club successes, but Edu's hurt and this game might be too important to mess around with inexperienced players too much.

Also, I'm curious whether Gonzalo Segares from the Fire gets to play at all for CR.

dan are you going to the qualifier in chicago this weekend?

jergins, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

Per Ives, half the starting XI for CR are going to be card-shy, which combined with really shitty old Astroturf makes me think this could be a hilarious(ly tragic) comedy of errors.

But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel), Wednesday, 3 June 2009 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

I want to go to the qualifier really bad, but a good friend is having a housewarming party the same night and I'm trying to save my $. I hear it hasn't completely sold out yet, so I might still cave in and go.

(said friend is a fan, so we'll be able to have it on in the background at least)

Really though, how much worse could it have been? At least Torres got some time.

If they don't take three points this weekend there'll be trouble.

one month passes...

i went to the usa-grenada game tonight. beckerman stood out, for his play or his hair i'm not sure. adu got manhandled by some mediocre but physical genadans. every time evans touched the ball he got cheers from the sounder faithful. fun night, though it probably should have been 7-0.

USA B- team was really dull except for about 8 minutes in the mid-late second half. Honduras didn't play W. Palacios, or Suazo, or Guevara for some reason.

avuenjo, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

^^^the downside of the double-header.

Bummin' I couldn't make it to Soldier Field tonight, but at least I get to watch on Spanish-language TV.

brash trash talker (dan m), Thursday, 23 July 2009 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

Also, it took me a second to figure out that the Palacios on the field for Honduras was not Wilson.

brash trash talker (dan m), Thursday, 23 July 2009 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

Gonna be real surprised if the USA can pull this one off given that most of the best players have skipped off back to Europe already.

nice work guys glad i will get to see u sunday. trying to figure who i want them to play, who i should root for tonight

avuenjo, Friday, 24 July 2009 01:48 (sixteen years ago)

I'm rooting for Costa Rica due to the fact that 1. they're not Mexico, and 2. Gonzalo Segares is my favorite Fire player.

brash trash talker (dan m), Friday, 24 July 2009 02:04 (sixteen years ago)

fuck, listening to this crowd makes me wish I was there even worse :(
