chicago sparta, 1938 us open cup champs

Spent some time talking w/ friends about what could improve FC Dallas attendance after the game Saturday night - aside from not being in BFE (really not quite that bad, but it's nearly an hour from my house in the center of DFW and I know the back ways to avoid traffic completely), they shoulda built a dome. I know that's less than traditional, but it's hard to draw big crowds to the fifth-most popular sport in the country when it's 97F at game time.
My buddy's seats are on the shadowed side, but you couldn't pay me to sit on the opposite stands staring into the sun or in the all-metal bleacher supporter's section.

Solution: no teams in Texas.

dan m, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 00:48 (fourteen years ago)

I like that Sparta picture, especially the fixers to each side. Very Chicago.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

milo I was being flippant above but you hit on a big problem for the league, along with the distances teams have to travel. The Fifa folks have been crowing about bringing the schedule in alignment with the 'rest of the world' for a while now. Texas summers won't help attract a crowd, but neither will Chicago winters. I could see some of the second-gen MLS stadia, when they are eventually built/renovated, having roofs a la the Bundesliga. It'd be costly as hell but it'd also mean the league had risen to a higher level of standing in the sports world in USA/Canada.

Nice display name btw.

A Mexican player named Pavel seems like a good match for Chicago.

boxall, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:17 (fourteen years ago)

I can't believe I just listened to four minutes of a Sounders podcast just to see if that idiot used the same accent when not on the TV news.

boxall, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

hahaha wow

did he? that was the best part of the video imo, other than when he was talking about going to Europe yearly

No, 100% American accent. This was recorded in February, maybe he'd been practicing around the house but wasn't ready to go public with it yet.

boxall, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

This all-star game is embarrassing.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 28 July 2011 02:24 (fourteen years ago)

lol yeah

tho I'm weirdly happy the Fire gave Utd their toughest test against MLS opposition even if it was partly due to weather

also a situation: Fire setting the new record for most draws in a season last night. 15 draws and we still have 10 games to go. Playoffs?

mizzell, Thursday, 25 August 2011 14:13 (fourteen years ago)

Carles must not rly follow MLS or else he'd know the trend is now buying up younger South American rising stars, using DP status to pay their transfer fees, and reaping the benefits of winning/selling down the road.

dan m, Thursday, 25 August 2011 14:21 (fourteen years ago)

c'mon, Carles clearly never heard of Robbie Keane before Monday.
