The Vikings ownership drops one little inkling of a hint of a notion that they might want to maybe bring MLS to the Twin Cities (possibly) if there is public financing for a new stadium (the catch) and within the week people are running with it: http://www.mls4mn.com/

yeah i heard about that

i'm obv wildly in favor of an MLS team in MN, but i'm not a huge fan of the arden hills stadium plan. not for any sort of political or 'well-informed' reason, i just think far-flung stadia are stupid, esp in a city that's trying to develop a rep in canny urban development

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Friday, 13 May 2011 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

There are twin cities there, right? Two teams is the answer imo, let 'em fight it out.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 13 May 2011 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

think an MLS-only stadium would make sense here: http://bit.ly/lO6CiX

esp since the SW corridor (assuming it gets built) is going to have a stop right there. i'd imagine some of the rich jerks in lowry hill might protest and i guess it'd be weird to have a pro soccer stadium right next to the sculpture garden, but w/e. that's where i want it. or on the dome site. having pro sports teams play in the burbs is just so stupid imo

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Friday, 13 May 2011 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

There already is a lower division squad (I have friends w/ season tickets lol) but they're really far out from the city too. I admit to not knowing where the proposed development is but it's already been pretty handily proven that close-to-city-center parks are the way to go to get the soccer loving populace out in numbers. Arden Hills isn't anywhere near the light rail, is it?

Frightening, but full of facts that are difficult to argue with. (dan m), Friday, 13 May 2011 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

no, it's not. and one of the sticking points in the local debate (from what i can tell) is that it's gonna cost 175M to make the road improvements necessary to manage the traffic.

but yeah: the soccer fans are imo more likely to be city-dwellers. i'm sure they'll show up for games, even in arden hills, but i have to say that part of the fun of going to the single mls game i've seen (sounders) was the fact that the stadium was right downtown. and it seems craycray to me to develop huge sports complexes in the burbs when we've got space and infrastructure in the city proper.

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Friday, 13 May 2011 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

i don't know what the stats are for light rail ridership when games are on (twins or vikes or wolves), but i think its decompressed the parking situation in a big way

i dunno i guess i'm just sorta depressed by the idea of a big dumb stadium going up in the middle of nowhere, with parking lot with 20k cars in it.

Was that an intentional callback? Great memory if so.

boxall, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

It did seem kind of familiar ... when you reach my level of posting expertise, muscle memory does the work for you.

top 10 overpaid and underpaid in MLS

http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/blog/_/name/schaerlaeckens_leander/id/6562718/top-10-overpaid-underpaid-mls

can't say I disagree with this much, I can't believe how little we're paying Diego Chaves

Kimura's great, my favorite full-back in the league I think. What is it with the Japanese and that position?

clever dummy (boxall), Friday, 20 May 2011 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't realize they were known for their fullbacks. Does he play for the national team ever?

Frightening, but full of facts that are difficult to argue with. (dan m), Friday, 20 May 2011 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

He never has. I'd read that he was sure to leave Colorado for Europe or the J-League soon in order to get the national side's attention. But they already have Nagatomo and Uchida, so.

clever dummy (boxall), Friday, 20 May 2011 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

Red Bulls to lose Marquez, Agudelo, Richards, De Rosario, Ream, Miller to Gold Cup duties next month. :/

Will we see a John Rooney sighting? lol

Great shot!

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 22 May 2011 02:25 (fifteen years ago)

yeah great let's play the old & crickety goalkeeper and keep the 21 year old potential national team standout on the bench, fuck conway, both of philly's goals were on him

I love "crickety" as a dismissive adjective in this context.

Is this Galaxy-Chivas game going to be worth watching?

clever dummy (boxall), Sunday, 22 May 2011 03:11 (fifteen years ago)

I have it on in the background, not really paying attention. Nice setup by Angel for Chad fucking Barrett for the only goal.

i stood in the piss down rain today and watched the sounders lose. this is a wounded and slow team. somebody threw a beer on brek shea after he scored, can't really see it on replay.

the real thing (harlan), Thursday, 26 May 2011 06:04 (fifteen years ago)

Brek Shea is a freak but throwing beers on your home field is lame.

"Pancyprian Freedoms"?

Michael B, Thursday, 2 June 2011 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

they're an old club iirc, been around since the 20s or 30s

dan m, Thursday, 2 June 2011 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

as far as these club names go it doesn't get much better than "Dub Defenders"

dan m, Thursday, 2 June 2011 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

ex-winners as I recall xp, maybe even as recently as the 80s

What's the deal with Dub Defenders though? El Paso Chivas Patriots is just horrible.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 2 June 2011 20:54 (fifteen years ago)

I tried googling around on them a little, didn't come up with anything. Doesn't help that their association is a loosely-affiliated group of a bunch of different leagues.

dan m, Thursday, 2 June 2011 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

I'm just hoping for an all Chicago Fire final :)

dan m, Thursday, 2 June 2011 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

Dub Defenders are in fact DV8 Defenders. Ugh.
