First professional game I ever attended was Brighton at home to Charlton at the old Goldstone Ground. Score?? Brighton 7 Charlton 0. The journey back was spent with the Brighton fans I was with explaining to me how it wasn't like this EVERY week. So, yeah, Charlton lol indeed.

No worries LJ :)
What really stood out to the 10 year old me, was just how annoyed the fans I was with were. It was a case of "I've been coming for years, we've just been relegated the previous season, what have YOU done to deserve seeing that performance?" etc etc. Honestly they were really put out about it. So I went to the midweek game the following Tuesday (under floodlights! magical) and Albion beat Bristol Rovers(?) 4-2! After which it was decided that I was a lucky mascot. Yeah, didn't last long;)
If it's any consolation one of my first away games was at the old Valley and Charlton won 1-0 :)
― pandemic, Thursday, 7 October 2010 15:02 (thirteen years ago) link
Ha! Well, I'm not surprised they were annoyed - if there's one thing a lower-league fan likes to do, it's somehow internalise and unify their team's ever-mottled matrix of success and failure until it's an ingraned truth that success is a springboard for failure and vice versa - every result is seen as an aberration unless that result is a drearily eventful 1-1 draw

Duchatelet is a high profile figure in Belgium where he owns Standard Liege, the current leaders of the Belgian Pro League, as well as founding a small social liberal political party Vivant who believe in a basic minimum wage for all.
oh my gawwwwd <3

http://valleytalkblog.com/2013/12/29/roland-duchatelet-a-belgian-football-expert-answers-our-questions/
1) Roland Duchâtelet took over Standard Liege in 2011. Has it been a happy relationship between owner and fans since?
Duchâtelet has a very bad relationship with the fans! The fans of Standard Liège are known as ultra-loyal fans, ready to do everything to support their team. The only thing they want in return are players who do the same and a president with who’s as passionate as they are. Roland Duchâtelet, however, is a business man. He buys a football club to earn money not because he’s a big fan of the game.
2) What happened to make fans so angry?
The first thing Duchâtelet did was to sell Standard Liège’s best players. He wanted an instant “Return On Investment” you could say. Fans went crazy and threatened their President. They broke in into his office in the stadium and almost attacked him while working. After this incident he decided to sell the club. Things also went wrong in the league, making fans even more angry.
3) How much credit can he take for Standard’s current strong position in the league? Was it all part of a master plan?
This season things are going very well with the new coach Guy Luzon. Standard are top of the league after 21 matches. Tensions have cooled and now the fans are just waiting until Duchâtelet will sell the club.

huddersfield have a classy dm in oliver norwood who doesn't rly get in their first team much now with the far more dynamic adam clayton preferred (alongside hogg, once of watford). one for damo suzuki's parrot to unpick
― imago, Monday, 17 March 2014 02:00 (ten years ago) link
oh and they also pick lumpen shinhacker keith southern ahead of norwood, which is a sin against football
― imago, Monday, 17 March 2014 02:02 (ten years ago) link
Norwood to the bench at the Valley was a one off, he has been a constant starter this season, Hogg is our designated dm. I suspect Norwood will be off to Celtic in the summer, the consensus is that he + Clayton are too similar, him being the more dispensable/inconsistent one. I would keep both but we are in the selling business.

Poyet (Diego) is the name on your work-mates’ lips as you discuss transfer rumours at lunch, a player to make your Premier League-obsessed colleagues think of Charlton for a reason other than another Carl Jenkinson mishap. “Hey, what’s that Poyet kid like?”, they’ll ask, “I’ve heard he’s mustard.” He most certainly is.
After every crunching tackle, cross-field ball or composed shimmy under pressure, you have to double take and remind yourself that this kid is just 18.
He’s only just notched 11 professional games yet already he is the most important cog in the Charlton machine. He glows with class, his alice band a halo of footballing nous, holding together the shaggy hair that hides a wise head beneath.

Poyet’s 83 per cent passing accuracy is higher than any other Charlton player to have played in more than five games.
Yet it’s not just with the ball at his feet where the youngster is showing seasoned pros how it’s done. Poyet is averaging a higher number of tackles, headers and interceptions per game than any other midfielder in the Charlton squad.
it'll be sad when Diego Poyet is more famous than Charlton Athletic
