does buddle have any chance of making the world cup?

mizzell, Monday, 12 April 2010 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

Seems like there's a lot of online opinions that say yes. I don't know if he's ever been capped, so it'd be a hell of a thing to throw him right into the mix. Another name that is getting tossed around a lot is Herculez Gomez, who has scored I think 8 goals in 12 games for Puebla in Mexico. Honestly, I think I'd rather see him... he played in the 07 Copa America and seems slightly more reliable than Buddle.

buddle has one cap, according to wiki, in a 2003 friendly

mizzell, Monday, 12 April 2010 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

all that matters is that the wild-card selection has an A++++ name

Yeah, these guys have much more entertaining monikers than Conor Casey or Brian Ching.

Would love to hear a commentator call a Gomez goal w/ "Herculeeez, Herculeeez" a la The Nutty Professor.

Allegedly MLS has moved past the NHL and NBA in attendance: http://www.mls-daily.com/2010/04/mls-attendance-moves-past-nba-nhl.html

The hockey fan in me dies a little bit.

ok i just watched final kick, espn's highlights of the week, and about half the goals were the result of absolutely shocking mistakes by defenders/ goalies.

mizzell, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 14:46 (sixteen years ago)

haha how long have you been watching this league? :)

Seattle get a 36,000 average attendance? That's pretty hefty.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

Ahead of the NBA? Does no one go to basketball games?

Ask foreigners and they will tell you the gospel comes from America. (Laurel), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

most nba arenas hold less than 20,000
nets attendance this year probably single-handedly responsible.
also this only takes into account the mls season so far, which is 3 weeks.

mizzell, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

Lots of people go to basketball games, but the average capacity of an NBA arena is only about 19,000, with the Palace at Auburn Hills holding the most at 22,076. Meanwhile, the Dynamo, the United, the Galaxy, and Chivas all play at stadia that hold 27,000+. Also, each NBA arena hosts 41 games per year, so some games are more sparsely attended than others.

HOOS zing-steen (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah Seattle skews the avgs all to hell. Philly playing at the Eagles stadium for part of the year messes with it too. w/o them it's probably closer to 15-16k. Dallas and Columbus get < 10k on the regular, and KC and SJ are stuck in ~10k stadia for the time being. Chicago had 20k for the home opener on Saturday.

he takes the account of everything in the universe into consideration (dan m), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

xp (But over the entire season more total fans will have gone to a NBA game than to an MLS game.)

HOOS zing-steen (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

MLS season is I think 32 games this year? It's the first season that each team plays everyone else home and away.

he takes the account of everything in the universe into consideration (dan m), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

(note: the "Allegedly" in my post with the attendence link was sarcastic)

he takes the account of everything in the universe into consideration (dan m), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:44 (sixteen years ago)

Meanwhile, the Dynamo, the United, the Galaxy, and Chivas all play at stadia that hold 27,000+.

Pretty much the only one of these that sells out with any regularity is Galaxy games (they and Chivas share a stadium), and with no Becks for most of this year that's even doubtful. United and Dynamo play in outdated American football stadia and get no revenue from things like beer sales and parking, hence the league-wide push to get each team its own home. United is the only one w/o a solid plan in place iirc. The new NY arena holds 25k.

he takes the account of everything in the universe into consideration (dan m), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

Obv. the United are not selling out RFK, but do they get more than 20,000?

HOOS zing-steen (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

Close to it, or more when it's an important game. They've got a friendly against AC Milan scheduled for this summer that'll probably sell out.

omfg Don Garber is such a fucking fool

“I think we’re going to see more and more MLS fans travel. Like Toronto fans have taught other MLS supporters to go around to our stadiums."

he takes the account of everything in the universe into consideration (dan m), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:42 (sixteen years ago)

yeah turns out Toronto invented the game too, all those years before they joined MLS we were actually watching baseball -- who knew?

he takes the account of everything in the universe into consideration (dan m), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:42 (sixteen years ago)

mls-related, i really like chicago's announcement of the sister cities cup. how cool. not like there needs to be another cup, but i'm into this one. it made me look up seattle's sister cities: ooh nantes, perugia, mazatlan, that would totally work.

est 2010 (rahni), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

Why is it so big in Seattle (and why did they not get an original franchise)? It can't be all down to Ljungberg

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

HIPPIES

GREAT JOB Mushroom head (gbx), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

srsly tho i think WA might be one of those states that produces more young soccer players than it does football players. plus liberal effete euro-loving pussies

GREAT JOB Mushroom head (gbx), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

That's funny - 70s footy here got a totally different vibe

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

last gbx part tru tru.

also we lost the sonics, and we traditionally get REALLY INTO a team when it's new. it's the hot ticket in town. we'll see in 5 years.

est 2010 (rahni), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:55 (sixteen years ago)

Seattle also lost their NBA franchise recently, and don't have an NHL team.

xp yup

Good to see liberalism still going strong anyway.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:55 (sixteen years ago)

Sister Cities Cup teams for the interested:

Chicago Fire
Paris St. Germain
Legia Warszawa
Red Star Belgrade

he takes the account of everything in the universe into consideration (dan m), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

i'm not sure why seattle didn't get a club earlier. the stadium only got built 5(?) years ago and there would've been no place to play before that, so no point in courting a club.

the old NASL club drew pretty well. they used to play in the kingdome, a 50k seat indoor place. they didn't fill it, but crowds were decent. or they seemed so to 4 year old me.

est 2010 (rahni), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

sister cities cup sounds cool.

mizzell, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

Don Garber can kiss my Anglophilic costal-elitist American ass, I went to see the Metros play New England at Foxboro in 1999.

I'd like to get St Pauli for a sister club, how cool would that be?

Just remembered this:

HOOS zing-steen (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

I read about an unrecognised world cup that 'The Republic of St Pauli' hosted for Greenland, Northern Cyprus, Gibraltar, etc. So they might twin with Navajo Nation or someone if they ever get a franchise

oh yes, st pauli is v v likely to partner with the fukkin RED BULLS

GREAT JOB Mushroom head (gbx), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:19 (sixteen years ago)

St. Pauli are also known for their close links with many other foreign clubs, enjoying a particularly close friendship with Celtic with St. Pauli fans attending Celtic games on the continent when Celtic play UEFA competitions. St Pauli flags and scarves are frequently seen on display at Celtic Park (The official Celtic stores sell St Pauli merchandise) and every year Celtic supporters arrive in Hamburg for the annual St Pauli - Celtic Festival.

Hands off, we've already got them.

ailsa, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

LOOK I DIDN'T ASK TO BE AN ENERGY DRINK OKAY SO LAY OFF.

xp to Ailsa: Oh bother. But it's unofficial, right??

Or at least non-exclusive.

Ask foreigners and they will tell you the gospel comes from America. (Laurel), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

Well, aye, but Celtic allowing their merchandise to be sold in their official stores is about as official as you are likely to get.

xpost, yeah, OK, not exclusive. But fairly concrete as far as tie-ups go.

ailsa, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

they have an open relationship

GREAT JOB Mushroom head (gbx), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

also i gotta cop to being the kind of person who just ~likes~ both celtic AND st pauli for reasons that have nothing to do with the actual football (irish, likes the skull and crossbones)

GREAT JOB Mushroom head (gbx), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:27 (sixteen years ago)

No-one likes Celtic for the actual football right now. They're on the telly right now and I'm posting on the MLS thread, FFS.

ailsa, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

You could probably still get Millwall

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

no sister cities listed on the harrison nj wiki page

mizzell, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

I like St Pauli for playing in brown shirts and saying fuk tha haters, among other things.
