Thanks! And, yes, it's birch bark (though I made the colors brighter than they really are).

Don't usually put photos of the kids on this board, but this one is a bit different. Mostly I'm posting it cos I almost wiped it - lost in the masses of recent kids' party pictures, I hadn't noticed that this card had undownloaded pix on it...

Maybe it was - perhaps that was the idea behind it all.
It's a room in the primate house in Berlin Zoo.
L-R: Gorilla, Bonobo, Chimpanzee
or is it
Gorilla, Chimpanzee, Bonobo.
A fellow outside insisted on giving an account of the Bonobo species and chastening those who confuse them with the Chimpanzee.
Glad that others like the image too.

This is just sort of shameless, since I like this photo but it isn't getting much attention on flickr:
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5268/5783913672_21f6224b5a_z.jpg
What can I say? I liked the way all of these people were standing! But it isn't getting the views that I'd hoped for (increasing flickr traffic might be another topic, although maybe that's a bit boring and sad?).
I love the primate kitchen photo, by the way.

I finally hunkered down and got a flickr account in order, but pictures are going up at a trickle. I've always like this one:

― Millsner, Sunday, 5 June 2011 14:38 (fifteen years ago)
Thank you Chinavision. I like the angles of gazing and the people in your picture. It is helped, anchored perhaps, by the US flag.
Increasing Flickr traffic feels like a good idea (and my traffic is probably tiny next to others here) - but is it? I always like it when people look at a picture - but then, I don't know these people, I don't get anything much from their attention, and maybe it is best to stay tucked away. I feel that increased traffic may be a false value. I suppose the truth is that I want a certain relatively small number of people to see them and be interested in them. But I understand the appeal of a bigger number.
― the pinefox, Monday, 6 June 2011 08:46 (fifteen years ago)
ps / if you do want to get more people looking at that picture, I notice it doesn't have any tags. Have you considered starting with 'hot Asian babe'?
― the pinefox, Monday, 6 June 2011 08:50 (fifteen years ago)
You know, I used to tag heavily but for some reason stopped doing so AND deleted most of my old tags about a year ago. Something about it just bugged me (among other things, probably the fact that my dad was such a relentless tagger that all of his photos would have things like "photography" "color" "mountain" "hill" "blue" "california" "united states" "landscape" etc.). I think seeing tags next to a picture seemed too literal and clunky! This is why only some pictures get titles too. I was also envious of people who seemed to get high viewing rates but not only had untagged photos, but had un-grouped photos.I can tell myself that flickr stats are pretty useless, except that I do nothing with my pictures *except* put them on flickr. So that is really my only payoff. I don't anticipate ever making money from photography, so I'd at least like as many people as possible to see and enjoy a picture that I make, if it's any good.

Do you comment on other people's photo's much? I found once i started looking around and commenting on what i liked, people returned the compliment.
― not_goodwin, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 19:44 (fifteen years ago)
I have to admit that I don't comment as much as I probably could or should. I lack words too often and just end up saying things like "nice!" or "wow!" so instead I tend to favorite pictures relentlessly.

Yeah the Madison Square Park piece is pretty nice! It is surprisingly disorienting to look at since that sort of spatial distortion is so completely associated with 2d pictures. And thank you about the crossing photo! I was really into the way that woman was holding the camera. When I got the photos back I was pretty surprised at how posed everyone looked to me.
― lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 23:30 (fifteen years ago)
I must admit I used to be quite addicted to the Flickr stats page - I'd like the photostream as a whole to get 100+ hits each day. If the graph dropped down to low double figures and I didn't have anything new to share I'd usually freshen things up a bit by blogging an old picture or uploading something random from the archives. (When I've just uploaded a load of kids' party pics and sent out Guest Passes, the hit count goes through the roof).
Well, now, it doesn't seem like I have to do anything to get those 100+ hits - mostly due to "unknown source" referrals. Not entirely what they are - ppl blogging my pictures? Accessing them via a phone app? Stuff like Tumblr does actually show up, so it's not necessarily that. 70% of all my traffic on a quiet day (no new content for a while) comes from these unknown sources. Any ideas?
― Michael Jones, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 10:48 (fifteen years ago)
I don't publicise my flickr acct much or do much tagging so when I get comments it's always kind of amazing to me. This one dude even wrote an entire POEM abt one of my pictures. That's what he does, apparently, leaves poems on pictures that 'inspire' him.
Another guy complimented my photo album full of Arshavin photoshops: "I love this series of shrugging Arshavin"
― salsa shark, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 12:57 (fifteen years ago)
From what I've read, unknown source hits can include blogs etc. that block referral data, but also from direct hits, like from a bookmark or an email etc. I also wonder if sites like flickriver have something to do with it.
― lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:02 (fifteen years ago)
Hmmm. I was curious because, on quiet days when I've not uploaded anything new for a while and there's no compelling reason for friends to be ploughing through my photos, instead of a total daily hit-count of around 60 (search engine hits for stuff within and without Flickr, usually), I now get a hit-count of around 150 and it's overwhelmingly "unknown source" making up the difference.
For example, yesterday (having not uploaded anything since Jun 2):136 views - 41 within Flickr, 20 Google/Yahoo image search, 1 Facebook, 1 ohdeedoh, 73 unknown source.
Occasionally, I'll get a big spike on one image - 55 views in a day, all unknown source.
