Wow, that is one busy sky! Great lines.

Christ! The exposure is perfect.

not_goodwin doesn't update his Flickr stream very often but, my goodness, when he does... Incredibly high quality threshold.

Almost embarrassed to post this in comparison...but we went to Clacton-on-Sea to see a man about a car and the sun came out...

I really need to make an effort to get out more with the camera, had a bit of a dry spell since before Christmas.

Mike, that's a gorgeous shot, nothing to be embarrassed about.
To be honest, I've learn't a lot from your stream, having a nosey at peoples Exif data is quite helpful.

Thanks for the compliment btw.

not_goodwin, Sunday, 23 January 2011 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

OK here's a new one (not yet on flickr):

http://www.altairnouveau.com/grimace_small.jpg

I knew that I got this one right after I hit the shutter! Been feeling bold lately.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Sunday, 30 January 2011 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

Also I continue to be in looooove with the Olympus 35 RC. It's a great little camera, and the 42mm focal length is pretty ideal most of the time.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Sunday, 30 January 2011 00:17 (fifteen years ago)

But I played with a Petri Color 35 today and was a little jealous... aperture and shutter speed on separate dials on the top of the camera! Focus on a 3rd dial! You can use the whole thing with just your right hand.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Sunday, 30 January 2011 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

would love to see that large on a wall

dirty man haw (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 30 January 2011 00:34 (fifteen years ago)

great street grab!

I've been shooting color w/ my Olympus XA2 - it's a change

based god kwassa kwassa (dayo), Sunday, 30 January 2011 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

Aw the XA2 is one of my favorites. Sometimes I think I'd like an XA, but then I figure if I'm gonna use a point and shoot I might as well use the one that doesn't demand focusing.
And thanks!

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Sunday, 30 January 2011 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

it is funny to imagine that something really awful has happened to the woman in that photo above, and the reaction from you all is "the 42mm focal length is pretty ideal" and "great street grab!" and "would love to see that large on a wall"... i mean, obviously we hope nothing bad has happened, but it's kind of entertaining to read the last few posts as if they were written by cold misanthropic androids.

Eyeball Kicks, Sunday, 30 January 2011 02:28 (fifteen years ago)

welcome to the problems of photography, it's funny that you know what's going on in that woman's life

based god kwassa kwassa (dayo), Sunday, 30 January 2011 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

I got a little Diana camera for Christmas. First time I've used real film in over ten years.

First roll, still a little rusty:

Not much to this one except it's cool because I took it at two o'clock in the morning!

Oh I think that was actually more of a grimace in the sunlight than anything else (the look she made was really brief) but yeah, if you take pictures of strangers then you never know what they're doing or thinking. And if you've decided to take pictures of strangers then you're probably also inclined to take pictures of them when they're making unusual gestures, expressions, or just seem to be doing weird/different things or standing in a strange way or holding something unusual, etc. And then when all is said and done you end up with a photograph and are then ready to talk about "photographic" things, like the focal length of the lens, or whether or not you think a picture is "successful." Any narrative you imagine at that point is really going to be something of your own invention.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Sunday, 30 January 2011 05:17 (fifteen years ago)

Like it's significant that a picture is of something that actually *happened* in a real place, but in the end it's still just a picture without time or context. It usually doesn't tell a story, but just shows the way things looked for an instant once from a certain perspective, inside a rectangle.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Sunday, 30 January 2011 05:25 (fifteen years ago)

And I really do stand by the 42mm (or 40mm) focal length!

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Sunday, 30 January 2011 05:26 (fifteen years ago)

Great Diana photos too! Very nice color on those.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Sunday, 30 January 2011 05:27 (fifteen years ago)

yeah love that look PP! I sent a roll for x-processing the other day, getting it back tomorrow.

chinavision otm, also 42mm is a boss focal length.

based god kwassa kwassa (dayo), Sunday, 30 January 2011 05:50 (fifteen years ago)

I wasn't criticising the voyeurism of street photography or anything like that! I just meant it was actually funny (for me) to pretend the woman was suffering, and then to read the comments in that context. When you squint, the comments could be read as if written by amoral technicians, enthusiastically dissecting the capture of human misery, or something. I understand full well that this was not the case! But, as I said, it was funny, and easy, to pretend it was.

I enjoy this thread, and there is a lot of great stuff in it!

Eyeball Kicks, Sunday, 30 January 2011 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

an old one - but i saw people getting nailed with a water cannon on the news the other day in almost the same spot this shot was taken.

Oy, yeah... I don't mean to be combative or anything. If anything I think it's nice to be challenged from time to time so you can give a little more thought to what you're doing.

that's the leica?

plax (ico), Friday, 25 February 2011 01:58 (fifteen years ago)

are they super easy to focus. i dont really understand rangefinders.

plax (ico), Friday, 25 February 2011 01:59 (fifteen years ago)

they don't really look like 'pro' cameras so ppl feel more at ease around them, also they are more quiet, not really any easier/harder to focus than an SLR...they are much easier to focus at nighttime

at least that's why I use one nowadays

Neu! romancer (dayo), Friday, 25 February 2011 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

leica FOC'S

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Friday, 25 February 2011 02:02 (fifteen years ago)

I mean I used to be as skeptical as the next guy, having used DSLRs &c before picking one up, but I really feel the leica has 'changed' the way I approach cameras & photography nowadays idk I think I drank too much kool-aid

Neu! romancer (dayo), Friday, 25 February 2011 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

well my FED should be something similar. will have it in a couple weeks?

plax (ico), Friday, 25 February 2011 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

but my praktica is my first camera and i feel totally affectionate and loving towards it

plax (ico), Friday, 25 February 2011 02:05 (fifteen years ago)

yah I'm not too familiar w/ the russian copies - plenty of people seem happy with em though assuming you get a good one, even if you dont get a good one there are people out there who know how to adjust it

Neu! romancer (dayo), Friday, 25 February 2011 02:06 (fifteen years ago)

anyway i bought 20rolls of 1600iso superia or something. its out of date but hopefully not lomo-blech tomfoolery level

plax (ico), Friday, 25 February 2011 02:15 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah so far I love the Leica. I have a FED 3 which I like a lot too though. I generally keep it around for B&W stuff because I have the Industrar 50mm collapsible lens which is uncoated and thus a bit diffuse looking, which means I use it to (try to) get that early diffuse Strand/Stieglietz/Steichen etc. kind of look, with marginal success. The downside with the FED is the small viewfinder and the knob advance (which yours might or might not have; they added a lever eventually). Otherwise it's a load of fun.
But I would be lying if I said that I'm not smitten with the Leica. Compared to my other (mostly compact) rangefinders, the viewfinder is large and luxurious, and is perfect for a 35mm lens. Something about it seems more conducive to just firing away rapidly too.
I also feel like a champ because I guessed the exposure for that shot. Too lazy to pull the meter out.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Friday, 25 February 2011 02:21 (fifteen years ago)

Also never really thought I'd be a Leica guy at this point in my life, but hey the price was right on eBay. It was actually not all *that* expensive to get a dinged up M2!
