this picture of last sunday's race was posted on a NYC cycling board-

http://www.teamorganicnyc.org/TOAG/03_02_08/_MG_2656.jpg

the winner of the 123s was rashad guerra--this post was in the comments:

It took me a while to figure it out. It was definitely a post-modern, almost interpretive-dance type victory salute. Quite engaging for an early Spring Series race, actually. One might even say haunting. AVD should be honored.

At first, I had the impression that he was chopping something up - for instance using a cleaver on a butcher block cutting board, slicing up a sushi roll perhaps. Or halving a melon. "The Iron Chef?" Or - less plausibly, perhaps - this was a shiatsu massage maneuver, as he had both arms alternating the chop, chop, chop motion. "Passionflower Shirley, the Yokohama Butterfly?"

Note that while the arms were slightly bent, they definitely weren't at 90º and they were not breaking the vertical line created by the torso - refer to the photograph above for confirmation. So while it might have evoked McEwen, only the casual and (dare I say) naïve observer could classify this rare specimen as simply "The Running Man". The limbs were not swinging back and forth, and he certainly did not have the jovial look on his face - again, please refer to the photographic evidence. It was not the running man, I concluded, that much was clear.

And while the disparate motion of the arms might have been inspired by Ewen McEwen's father's salute, Mr Guerra's had a much more menacing, stilted and robotic-like feel. He came thundering across the line, part man, part bike. Like an updated and modern-day Optimus Prime, more two-wheeler than 18-wheeler but - as evidenced by the look on his face - an evil one. And it became clear. He was a bicyborg, simultaneously winning races and crushing his human competitors. It was the theatrical embodiment of the Flight of the Conchords' first hit enmeshed with early morning winter bike racing - to paraphrase the great Bret and Jemaine, if he had poisonous gasses, he would've poisoned their a**es.

His victory salute classification is: "The Humans are Dead."

According to one of BKW's sources, Fabian Cancellara dropped the entire CSC team while reconning Paris-Roubaix yesterday. Rode away from them. He overshot the rendezvous point with the bus, and as our source said, "Missed the bus." Apparently he had his cell phone with him and they had to ring the powerhouse up to get him to stop.

cutty, Saturday, 7 March 2009 21:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I found myself agreeing with pretty much everything he says. I'm all about big obvious hand signals, stopping at lights and rolling stops at stops signs, no pavement riding and the like.

Prince of Persia (Ed), Monday, 9 March 2009 02:32 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, i'm with most of that article. it takes a lot of willpower to stop at lights, but i've always been about signaled movements (tho usually directed at specific vehicles, like "i'm going right there, where i'm pointing" and not generic sticking my arm out business) and have def chewed ppl out that ride their bikes on the sidewalk (tho not as often as warranted...most of the kids in my CHI neighborhood riding on teh sidewalk were pairs of 17 year-olds on BMX bikes that i didn't really feel like confronting)

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Monday, 9 March 2009 18:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Stopping at lights is my LEAST likely directive from that article, but sidewalk riding is like pain-of-death stuff, isn't it?? Only babies and the occasional delivery guy should ever be on the sidewalk!

Was cycling home from work through Hyde Park. Struggling up the incline that runs alongside Rotten Row, face like a big pink ham, hulking desperately over his handlebars, slugging away at the pedals like a heavyweight boxer on the ropes, in a completely unsuitable thick blazer...

I don't think he would have noticed tbh. He didn't seem aware of much going on around him. Eyes fixed sightlessly on the tarmac in front of his front tyre, mouth agape.

A few things from the bike shop.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: 2009-05-27, 4:05PM PDT

Whoo-hoo Seattle, the sun is out! Let's discuss a few things before you fumble with swapping the unused ski rack for the unused bike rack on the Subaru.

So yes, you've noticed the sun is out, and hey!- maybe it would be cool to to some bike riding. Let's keep in mind that the sun came out of all 600,000 of us, so for the most part, you're not the only one who noticed. Please remember that when you walk into my shop on a bright, sunny Saturday morning. It will save you from looking like a complete twat that huffs "Why are there so many people here?"

Are we all on the same page now about it being sunny outside? Have we all figured out that we're not the only clever people that feel sunny days are good for bike riding? Great. I want to kiss all of you on your forehead for sharing this moment with me. Put your vitamin D starved fingers in mine, and we'll move on together to some pointers that will make life easier.

SOME POINTERS FOR THE PHONE:

- I don't know what size of bike you need. The only thing that I can tell over the phone is that you sound fat. I don't care how tall you are. I don't care how long your inseam is. Don't complain to me that you don't want to come ALL THE WAY down to the bike shop to get fitted for a bike. I have two hundred bikes in my inventory. I will find one that fits you. Whether you come from the north or the south, my shop is downhill. Pretend you're going to smell a fart, ball up, and roll your fat ass down here.

- Don't get high and call me. Write it down, call me later. When I have four phone lines ringing, and a herdlet
of people waiting for help, I can't deal with you sitting there "uuuuhhh"-ing and "uuummm"-ing while your brain tries to put together some cheeto-xbox-fixie conundrum. We didn't get disconnected, I left you on hold to figure your shit out.

-I really do need to see your bike to know what is wrong with it. You've already figured out that when you car makes a noise, the mechanic needs to see it. When your TV goes blank, a technician needs to see it. I can tell you, if there is one thing I've learned from you fucking squirrels, it's that "doesn't shift right" means your bike could need a slight cable adjustment, or you might just need to stop backing into it with the Subaru. Bring it in, I'll let you know for sure.

- No, I don't know how much a good bike costs. For some, spending $500 dollars is a kingly sum. For others, $500 won't buy you one good wheel. You really need to have an idea of what you want, because every one of you raccoons "doesn't want to spend too much".

FOR YOU INVENTIVE TYPES AND DO-IT-YOURSELFERS:

- Just because you think is should exist, doesn't mean that it does. I know that to you, a 14 inch quill stem makes perfect sense, but what makes more sense is buying a bike that fits you, not trying to make your mountain bike that was too small for you to begin with into a comfort bike.

- If some twat on some message board somewhere says that you can use the lockring from your bottom bracket as a lockring for a fixie conversion doesn't mean that A: you can, or B: you should. Please listen to me on this stuff, I really do have your best interests at heart.

- I love that you have the enthusiasm to build yourself a recumbent in the off season. That does not mean however, that I share your enthusiasm; ergo I won't do the "final tweaks" for you. You figure out why that Sram shifter and that Shimano rear derailleur don't work together. While we're at it, you recumbent people scare me a little. Don't bring that lumbering fucking thing anywhere near me.

A DEDICATION TO ALL THE HIPSTER DUCHEBAGS:

-If you shitheads had any money, you wouldn't NEED a vintage Poo-zhow to get laid. Go have an ironic mustache growing contest in front of American Apparel, so that I can continue selling $300 bikes to fatties, which is what keeps the lights on.

- Being made in the 80's may make something cool, but that doesn't automatically make something good. The reason that no one has ridden that "vintage" Murray is because it's shit. It was shit in the 80's, a trend it carried proudly through the 90's, and rallied with into the '00's. What I mean to say is, no, I can't make it work better. It's still shit, even with more air in the tires.

SO YOU'RE GONNA BUY A BIKE:

Good for you! Biking is awesome. It's easy, it's fun, it's good for you. I want you to bike, I really do. To that end, I am here to help you.

-Your co-worker that's "really into biking" knows fuck all. Stop asking for his advice. He could care less about you having the right bike. He wants to validate his bike purchase(s) through you. He also wants to sleep with you, and wear matching bike shorts with you.

- You're not a triathlete. You're not. If you were, you wouldn't be here, and we both know it.

- You're not a racer. If you were, I'd know you already, and you wouldn't be here, and we both know it.

- So you want a bike that you can ride to work, goes really fast, is good for that triathlon you're doing this summer (snicker), is good on trails and mud, and costs less than $300. Yeah. Listen, I want a car that can go 200 miles an hour, tow a boat, has room for five adults, is easy to parallel park but can carry plywood, gets 60mpg, and only costs $3,000. I also want a unicorn to blow me. What are we even talking about here? Oh yeah. Listen, bikes can be fast, light, cheap and comfortable. Pick two, and we're all good.

ABOUT YOUR KIDS:

Your kids are amazing. Sure are. No one else has kids as smart, able, funny or as good looking as you. Nope. Never see THAT around here.

- I have no idea how long you kid will be able to use this bike. As it seems to me, your precious is a little retarded, and can't even use the damn thing now. More likely, your budding genius is going to leave the bike in the driveway where you will Subaru the bike to death LONG before the nose picker outgrows the bike.

- Stop being so jumpy. I am not a molester. You people REALLY watch too much TV. When I hold the back of the bike while your kid is on it, it's not because I get a thrill from *almost* having my hand on kid butt, it's because kids are unpredictable, and generally take off whenever possible, usually not in the direction you think they might go. Listen, if I were going to do anything bad to your kids, I'd feed them to sharks, because sharks are FUCKING AWESOME.

I hope this helps, and have fun this summer riding your kick-ass bike!

that's funny... i think anyone who has worked in a shop before knows why people in bike shops tend to be assholes so much of the time.

thats funny.

any retail can be utterly, dispiritingly miserable. that said, snarky bike monkeys piss me off to the extreme. ive worked in four shops of varying standards, and the guys who would clown or be mean to customers were usually bitter assholes all the way around.

ive had some really good experiences with shop folks in the last two weeks in denver and golden.

iro with the brown bag (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 04:24 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, i never felt like i acted that way to a customer, but i can't say that i never had days where thoughts in the tone of that email ran non-stop through my mind. but like you said, pretty much anyone in retail has had those days.

although, on the other hand, there are the customers in bike stores who i think are uniquely irritating - the guys who want you to drop everything to find a washer for their floor pump that they bought 30 years ago, or the ones who blow a gasket when you tell them that bike helmets wear out, and the one they bought in 1988 probably isn't safe anymore.

Long, but Cipo gets punked on an Italian TV show. The guy in the tiny car tells him his bikes have all been jacked from his house. Hilarity ensues. Awesome riding and he gets SO mad. Check out climbing a pallet ladder in cleats.

should just replace this thread with a link to BSNYC:

See also:

Crossing the Manhattan Bridge and heading into the city yesterday, I was passed by a rider on a brakeless Pista. As the rider began his descent, I noticed he had stopped pedaling, which seemed strange as he had clearly been riding a fixed-gear. He then placed the thin sole of his diminutive canvas boating shoe on the tire of his rear wheel, at which point I realized he had dropped his chain and was now trying to slow his speeding bicycle. Apparently, though, the "footjam" was not as effective as he had hoped, so he then started dragging both feet on the pavement Fred Flinstone-style. Here he is, clearly mashing his "pants yabbies" on his top tube in the process:

Eventually, he managed to finally get off the thing, and as I passed him I simply pointed to my own bicycle and said, "Brakes."

Ah, yes, brakes--those marvels of engineering which manage to function independently of the bicycle's drivetrain. Of course, they do tend to spoil the "clean lines" of your bicycle, and they can also make you look like a "woosie." I'll admit that the rider above looked really cool and elegant as he desperately struggled to save himself by dragging his feet and squashing his genitals --the whole thing was totally "zen." I wonder why he didn't simply use his gigantic empty messenger bag to stop, since it seems to me it would have functioned rather well as a parachute.

from http://www.fatcyclist.com/

If you are a male cyclist with an injured female cyclist

Refrain from telling her how hot she looks in lycra. Now is not the time. Trust me.
Tell her how tough and awesome she is. By the way, she is very tough, and very awesome. Just in case you weren’t clear on that.
Tell her anyone else would be crying harder / acting more pathetic than she is, including you. But don’t use the words “acting more pathetic,” because that implies she’s being pathetic at all, which she is not.
Get her bike ready to ride again. The woman is going to want you to shut up at some point. This is a good time for you to fiddle with her bike and make sure it’s good to go.
Volunteer to make a tourniquet / bandage out of your jersey. But not until she’s on her feet and seems like she might appreciate your sense of humor again.
Describe the events leading up to the injury. Be expansive and generous with the difficulty of the triggering obstacle and / or event. She didn’t endo when she hit a rock. It was a big ol’ honkin’ ledge, and she darn near cleared it anyway. I’m not exactly sure why we all start telling the story as soon as the event happened, but it seems to help, and it seems to help more if you get started with the exaggeration right away.
If you are a male cyclist with an injured male cyclist

Ask if he’s alright. Depending on how old you are and where you live, you should either end the sentence with “dude,” “man,” or “bro.” It makes the question affectionate and concerned-sounding without being too affectionate and concerned-sounding.
Lean his bike against a tree. He won’t trust any tweaks, fixes, or adjustments you make anyway.
Wait for 30 seconds before asking if he’s ready to ride. If he says he needs another minute, wait another thirty seconds and ask again. Repeat as necessary.
Describe the event, but feel free to trivialize certain aspects (such as the prime cause of the event) and enhance other aspects (such as the high-pitched scream the victim made upon suffering a compound fracture).
If you are a female cyclist with an injured male cyclist

Tell him how hot he looks in lycra. For guys, there’s no bad time to hear this, and even when we’re injured there’s a small part of us that’s wondering if our guts are sufficiently sucked in.
Otherwise let us suffer quietly. We’re trying to be manly and stoic. If you begin to describe the event, we’re going to think it sounds silly, because you’re not exaggerating our manliness sufficiently. If you call the injury on our leg a “nasty little scrape,” you’re making it that much harder to refer to it as a five-inch-long gushing gash when we recount it later.
Don’t touch our bikes. Unless we beg you to help us unclip.
If you are a female cyclist with an injured female cyclist

Honestly I have no idea. Do whatever it is you women do when you’re with each other. Like, talk about how much you miss us men. That’s what you do when we’re not around, right?

Minoura's tips for riding rollers.

Make sure most weight are gathered in center
At first, get on bike and support your body by holding a wall or handrail.
Apply your main weight to the saddle. Do not apply any force to the handlebar. Just touching is fine.
Grab the handlebar at the area as close to the stem as possible where should be the better position to keep balance easily.
Do not look down, see 2 - 3 meters ahead.

Start pedaling while supporting your body by holding the wall. You should pedal a little fast, not slowly, if you want to start riding without hand support.
The gear position should be set in middle, not too light nor too heavy. Keep 20 km/h or faster.
The handling must change quickly on rollers. Even a little angle will move the front wheel to the roller end very rapidly. To avoid such thing, do not apply any force to the handlebar to help the bike's own stability.

When you can ride without any stagger, release your hand from the wall and put back to the handlebar quickly.
At this moment, be careful not to lose balance. Do not look down and keep watching 2 - 3 meters ahead.
Make sure you "spin" the pedal, not pushing down. When you push down the pedal, imagine you need to pull up another side pedal. It is essential to use both pedals at once. Make sure you set your kneecaps close to the top-tube. Do not open your legs.
Keep the certain speed.

If you put 100% of your weight to the saddle, it is not difficult to remove your hands from the handlebar, but do not do while you are still a beginner.

Do not apply brake to stop training, otherwise you will be brown backward dangerously. Just stop pedaling and wait until the speed gets down. Then hold the wall to support your body just before stopping.

"This bike looks like something that a member of The Smiths would ride--in fact, that's what happened. While working at a downtown bike shop awhile back, a man stopped by to sell this bike before going back to his home in Australia. I like vintage steel frames so I bought the bike from him. After that, we talked for awhile and he told me that he was on tour w/ his band from Australia. While he was in L.A. w/ this bike, Johnny Marr from The Smiths, a friend of his, rode the bike around the block. I believe that this story is true because I spent over 45 mins talking to the guy and he seemed to be authentic, real, and knew his music. I included a pic I took of the previous owner w/ the bike, in addition to a pic of Johnny Marr w/ Morrissey, and two photos of the bike."

“I’ve been training as if I were racing the next week. I replaced the races with intense workouts to simulate the effort of racing,” he continued. “I trained with Vinokourov and Gilbert, also with a lot of the Australians, but they stop too often at the bar for coffees for my taste.”

An anonymous source told the Danish newspaper BT that Contador was “displeased” with Saxo Bank and was therefore looking to leave the team. There were said to be three reasons for his dissatisfaction. One was the unsatisfactory sporting level of the team supporting him at the 2011 Tour de France, with another being his disagreement with the team's dietary recommendations and restrictions. Specifically, he was said to be denied the doughnuts he is fond of.

dude died while divebombing a descent after being deposed as kom.

"They (Strava) assume no responsibility. They don't put cones out. They don't have anybody monitor and see whether a course, or a specific segment, is dangerous," said Susan Kang, the lawyer representing Flint's family.

Oh man

A ruling in the family's favor would set a pretty draconian precedent. There's a climbing website (8a.nu?) that is the de facto Internet ticklist; if someone died trying to get an FA of something, is the site liable?

catbus otm (gbx), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 23:34 (eleven years ago) link

Some insights:

I am friends with a former NVIDIA co-worker of the deceased and Kim was an equal daredevil on his motorcycle, "He loved bombing descents on two wheels."

From his online bio*: "I drive up and down interstate 880 a lot. If you are ever in the fast lane and you see me behind you, please move out of the way. I'm tired of having to pass all you slow people on the right."
So if he had died on Interstate 880 his family would have sued the US Dept of Transportation?

His girlfriend/partner/common-law wife was quoted** at the time of the accident as not blaming Strava for Kim's accident: "[Strava is] trying to do something to help motivate people. I think that's a good thing. [Kim] did frequently push himself to his limits ... in this case, his limit was not a good thing."

Actually for music geeks, he was a pretty influential as he founded the looper's delight mailing list that was very active in the late 90s-early 00s.

His family sounds desperate for a payout, and I have learned that Kim's partner/widow recently bought a big house in Auburn, CA and has been buying quite a bit of high-end kitchen and home improvement materials despite her employment listed as being a moderator of an unofficial Tori Amos fan page... :-\

they're just silly on a fixie, right, not like actively dangerous. plus what about BIKE POLO.

eris bueller (lukas), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 16:01 (ten years ago) link

bike polo doesn't count, everyone's got homemade discs (and disc brakes) on their polo bike (around here at least)

i would think they'd be actively dangerous on ANY bike if you've got one in front

well if it isn't old 11 cameras simon (gbx), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 16:14 (ten years ago) link

It's not the fixie thing its more the massive sail you add to your bike. One side gust and you're in the canal.

I haven't seen a front disc in pro road TT in a while and rear discs are getting rarer now they have super deep section rims.

If we're going to talk dual disc LOLz we have to post this picture

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 17:36 (ten years ago) link

a disc rear on a fixie is unlikely to cause a problem unless it's really really windy or really gusty. a disc rear is good in gentle to moderate wind or breeze conditions, particularly at yaw. i can't make any argument for a front disc. all discs work best with yaw- the benefit of a disc in dead calm is like, reaaally tiny as far as i've heard. but to have yaw, you need some wind. and if you have wind on a front disc, it's gonna be dangerous according to the one person i know who's raced a front disc.

but why any disc on a hipster fixie? also, daer hipsters, i can sell you an awesome old rear disc, convertible to 120mm, with alloy brake track. i'll throw in the vittoria evo cx tubular on it. if you've not skidded a $100 tubular, you've not skidded. have someone film it for you!

ha exactly. swenson is such a monster--i'm trying to remember what event it was last year, i think he was the guy who had like multiple catastrophic mechanicals at like leadville or kanzaa but came back and like, podiumed with mooooonster power numbers. hope i'm not mistaking the story. And doing what he did at 6k to 7500ft is not to be overlooked _at all_. in pure wattage that is likely to be an 8-10% drop off what he could theoretically deliver at sea level where gaimon did it. i doubt, as a layman nerd, that he recovered anything close to that on a hairpin descent or low speed climb via wind friction, though there is obv some benefit there. it makes me think he'd just lap gaimon hth. and i sorta don't ~want~ to like gaimon in a way, but to the limited exposure i got, i really like gaimon, his long-ass video on this was wonderful and funny.
