Yeah, I can't really be arsed reading through 1000 posts of this and the other thread but I thought they were "supposed" to expire after 6 months, but that was at the mod's discretion and the mods have, like, lives, and don't want to spend them weeding out our old SBs. (none of this being automatic)

They get cleaned out every 6 months according to Matt or John on the other thread. I think they might get weeded more regularly than that on occasion.

i think it's that they individually expire 6 months after being submitted, rather than getting wiped en masse every 6 months. not sure if that's what you were saying though.

I'm not asking because I don't want to know, but is suggest ban actually working? Every time I hit it, it doesn't do what it used to do (take me to the beginning of the thread, IIRC) it just goes to an empty page. When I do that in trying to send a webmail, the webmail fails. Which makes me wonder if the SB is also not working?

The likely problem is the length of your display name; if it gets too long, it won't fit into the name column in the database and you get weird errors/blank pages when you try to do things.

Try resetting your screen name and hitting it again; if it goes through, that was the problem. If not, something else is happening.

Two separate issues:
1. Been having intermittent problems w/gmail (who send ILX Robot messages). Just sent a webmail to the Karen D account, and it seems to have sent OK.

2. Suggest Bans. Have a very few errors in the log here, but nothing from Karen D. Just SBd a couple of people and they took. Will keep an eye on it.

I've always gotten the blank screen after a SB, but I assumed my SBs were still being applied.

What really sucks for me is, I had kind of got into the habit of hitting suggest ban a couple of times when the usual eejits kicked off, to blow off my tension instead of flaming back. Now I *know* for a fact that that has absolutely no effect at all, it takes away that release and I'm a heck of a lot more tempted to flame back (also safe in the knowledge that a good proportion of their SB's won't "take" either).

I just test SB'd Three Word Username at 16:20 british time which makes it 15:20 by my ILX time. Got the odd blank screen again.

I am quite certain that I've never SB'd them before and they said they only had 1 SB so it should be easy to tell if my SB showed up or not. (if it has, go ahead and remove it.)

Given that kkvgz did one at 11:21 EST that was showing at 28 past, there is no time lag.

Some of them are working and some of them are not. If you go back to the thread, or back to the top of ILX, it is working for you. If you get a weird blank page with the URL http://www.ilxor.com/ILX//VoteForBanControllerServlet then your SBs do not show up.

The easiest way to test this without SB-ing random people left and right is to attempt to send a webmail, as it generates the same blank page and fail, as NV's email to me has not shown up over an hour later, and Dan's and Stet's turned up immediately.

Fairly certain it's not browser related as I've tried from 3 different browsers now.

Please can you remove caek's SB from me as that's not fair. Obviously my test SBs are not working, so I should not be retaliation penalised for them.

yeah my request to give the system time to catch up is partially an attempt to see if there are other anomalises going on here - obv the sb is not working quite the right/same way for everyone, so the reporting of sbs might not be either.

harbl and I had this discussion on a different mod request thread and we determined that because we were banned from certain subboards (me from iltmi & ire, her from 1p3), that messed up the sb and webmail functions. i'm not sure how reliable that theory is since i now seem to be able to SB freely (and afaik i am still banned from those boards) but both of kate's usernames are banned from iltmi iirc so that fits that theory at least

Right now my working theory is that if you have been banned from a subboard, there's a bug where your ban is being counted in some tables but not registering in others; I just checked and darraghmac had been banned from The Church and Kate had the self-ban on ILTMI so I removed the bans and asked them to try again and it seems to work now.

This is a pretty big bug but I think now that we've got an idea of what's going on, it can be addressed. The upshot seems to be as follows:

- your bans are going through but we are having problems seeing them
- there's an off-chance this might be affecting the webmail as well? dunno

i am l8 to this but i think i was the one who first asked for webmail not to work if you are banned, because neb was emailing people after he was banned. i think it was since then that if you were banned from a subboard you could not webmail, it's not just because of the gmail glitch. sorry everyone! i meant for it just to be site bans, and now i don't even care anymore.
