cons: Browns are in the AFC North, cannot stop the run

this is pretty brutal -- ozzie is basically the only hof player to make a significant contribution to the brownies in my lifetime

mookieproof, Friday, 3 August 2012 01:21 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, ozzie was a shoe-in but tellingly no defensive player for the Browns ever made it into the hall (well no long term player). last time the browns had a HOF defensive player was 1959.

i dunno if this is normal throughout the league

Hungry4 8-8 (brownie), Friday, 3 August 2012 01:33 (eleven years ago) link

clay matthews was pretty damn good

i feel like there was another lb alongside him who was also good, but can't recall/care enough to search

Hungry4 8-8 (brownie), Friday, 3 August 2012 10:43 (eleven years ago) link

but yeah, Matthews was a HOF semi-finalist last year, along with Donnie Shell and Steve Atwater so he's in good company and probably should make it. he had 12 sacks in '84! and lol the team went 5-11 that year but was in every game except for two blowouts.

and that's the deal with recent Browns D history, when tight games need a playmaker to turn a loss into a victory they don't show up. this was a sad case and set their defense back years:

Hungry4 8-8 (brownie), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:11 (eleven years ago) link

welp, LB Chris Gocong is out for the year

He wasn't anything special but the run defense I fear is going to suck again with Philthy Phil Taylor gone for most of the season and the Browns having to rely on a 4th round rookie from Nevada (linebacker U) to take CG's place.

So the Browns have a new a owner and unbelievably some local sports talkers have called for new uniforms. If this happens I will be angrier than Big Dawg at an a la carte restaurant.

Amazingly terrible game, week 5. Usually I go to a safe house to watch the Browns. But I end up at a bar about a half mile from my apartment and it's 75% Pittsburgh fans.

Pros: The Browns finally ran some sweeps. Here's an NFL team that hasn't run outside the tackles all year except for the quick pitch against the Ravens.

Christ: No way to stop the run

When the Browns were up 14-0 (!!!) I said to myself and the guy next to me DON'T GIVE UP LONG DRIVES. What followed was a constant parade of off tackle runs and 7 yard curls and outs.

Pat Shurmur on why he ran a play instead of letting the clock run down to the two minute warning, and regrouping, at the end of the first half:

"When you get down there, you never know how long it's going to take you to score. It may take 5 or 6 plays, so we wanted to get another play in there."

lol at "it may take 5 or 6 plays", it was first and goal! They ended running up the middle for almost no gain. Also, they had timeouts left.

He's a horrible head coach.

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, the Cleveland Browns are expected to clean house Monday, letting go of both coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Saturday, citing league sources.

Shurmur was awful, and I'm glad to see him go, but I really liked Heckert. Even if he did draft Brandon Weeden over Russell Wilson.

Browns aren't a franchise I can bring myself to laugh at, mostly because the fans deserve better. Having the o.g. Browns shipped off to the north and watching them win two Super Bowls, while watching the nu-Browns struggle to field competitive teams year in and out has to be frustrating.

I got mad respect for fans like brownie who wind up sticking it out. really hoping to see them return to prominence soon.

Neanderthal, Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:14 (ten years ago) link

You definitely have a chance against the Vikings. Their defense has been terrible, Ponder has been mistake-prone and Peterson has been going nowhere on first downs.

Browns defense looks very solid. Hoyer may do just find against the Vikings, who have a habit of making backup QBs look like allstars.

Still hoping the Browns are demoralized enough to let the Vikings have a much needed win.

Plasmon, Sunday, 22 September 2013 17:03 (ten years ago) link

yeah the Browns defense did a number against my Fins until the game broke open. if it hadn't been for the LOLceivers, might have even won that game.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 22 September 2013 17:06 (ten years ago) link

So like I was saying...

Hoyer 8/11 for 124 with 2 TDs

the browns have apparently given their general counsel control of the football operation

call all destroyer, Monday, 4 January 2016 03:32 (eight years ago) link

Sashi Brown will go from general counsel to executive vice president of football operations. The general manager will report to Brown, the coach to Haslam. The idea is for all to work together and collaborate on decisions, but Brown will have final authority over the 53-man roster and the draft, while the coach will decide how players are used on Sundays. That structure is similar to the one in which Farmer and Pettine worked.

the only thing more amazing than the idea of this management structure is the fact that they've already tried it.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/14697600/cleveland-browns-moving-johnny-manziel-latest-incident-source-says

Johnny Manziel's time with the Cleveland Browns will come to an end in March, according to a league source.

The Browns released a statement from new director of football operations Sashi Brown on Tuesday that expressed disappointment in Manziel but stopped short of saying the quarterback's run in Cleveland is over.

"We've been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field. Johnny's continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization," Brown said. "His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules. We will have no further comment at this time."

The reference to league rules points to the fact that the Browns do not have the salary cap space to release Manziel on Feb. 8, the day after the Super Bowl and the first day they can do so. The move will take place when the new NFL year starts March 9, according to the source. Releasing Manziel in February would count $4.6 million against the cap, and due to the cap's machinations, the Browns do not have that space -- and will not have it in February. The cap will increase in March, which will allow them to release Manziel then.

The trade of Gilbert, who likely would have not made the team during final roster cuts, means the Browns have parted ways with both of their first-round picks from the 2014 draft, and they have none of their first-round picks on the roster from 2012 through 2014.

Gone are QB Brandon Weeden (2012), RB Trent Richardson ('12), LB Barkevious Mingo ('13), QB Johnny Manziel ('14) and now Gilbert.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 24 August 2018 02:04 (five years ago) link

ya idk i mean i guess it's p cool but i care SO little abt football that it doesn't faze me much
from what i understand he took them from really shitty to kinda-eh but then they got shitty again and they sacked him?
how do football coaches work?? was he an ok one or did he deserve to be fired? what's the point of quickly firing someone w/o giving them a chance to build up the team? this confuses me so much

he had a rough deal, is a good defensive coach. he'll do well in GB
