a. i voted "it's in god's hands" because obv it is, but tebow's gonna play in the nfl for 15+ years -- probably not at QB, and denver might've spent a first round pick on an h-back, but the guy is a really great athlete (tho maybe a bit slow for the nfl) + and he's got good knowledge of football & i can almost guaruntee that he won't pull an eric crouch and refuse to play a different position if it comes to that -- i think he's prob pretty much the white antwan randel-el, subsitute the tight end position for wide receiver

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 April 2010 18:55 (thirteen years ago) link

i would put the chance that tebow leads the broncos in rushing touchdowns next year at 40%

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 April 2010 18:55 (thirteen years ago) link

do we even know if he can catch a football?

iatee, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 18:55 (thirteen years ago) link

15+ years! really!?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 April 2010 18:56 (thirteen years ago) link

or maybe 10! whatever. he's gonna have a long career.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 April 2010 18:56 (thirteen years ago) link

so all that tight-end tim tebow needs is a quarterback who turns around and then throws the ball through his legs

iatee, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 18:57 (thirteen years ago) link

can just hear the rick reilly/every other sportswriter jizzing out "what a team player!" already u_u

ban c u tty (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 18:58 (thirteen years ago) link

and btw i'm very much rooting for him!! the nfl has long been this bastion of fitting players into molds as opposed to molding a team/scheme around your players, so i think any player -- like mike vick or vince young or steve young before him -- that forces or allows nfl teams to be more creative is a good thiing for the league and for the fans and i hope tebow takes a ton of wildcat snaps next year and is successful with them

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 April 2010 18:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I can otm that

iatee, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 18:59 (thirteen years ago) link

If he's not a success in Denver after two years, I see him being traded to Jacksonville just to put butts in seats (provided he hasn't embarrassed himself so badly that no one cares).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 18:59 (thirteen years ago) link

that's why i hate the colts fwiw -- they run like three formations and the same three plays out of those same three formations, it's soooo zzzzzzz get out of here peyton u robot

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 April 2010 19:00 (thirteen years ago) link

if he sucks I dunno how many butts are gonna come to seats xp

iatee, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 19:00 (thirteen years ago) link

obv the definition of "good" is at issue here--i doubt he will make it at qb but all accounts of his athleticism indicate he could hang around in some role.

still voted no.

NEW YORK -- Former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow is working on an inspirational memoir.

Tebow is collaborating with Nathan Whitaker on "Through My Eyes," scheduled to come out in April. HarperCollins announced the book Monday.

The former University of Florida quarterback was drafted this year in the first round by the Denver Broncos. He has played in four games so far, scoring two touchdowns in 10 carries, but has yet to throw a pass in the regular season.

In a statement released by HarperCollins, the 23-year-old Tebow said his book would be a story "of faith, family and football" and inspiring people to "fulfill their dreams."

is tim tebow the next john beck, is the better question. dare to dream.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 19 November 2011 02:48 (twelve years ago) link

actually he kinda nails it:

1. I love how he drives every NFL expert, every saber nerd and most talking heads and sports columnists insane. They can’t handle a world in which Tebow wins ugly and sports defy explanation. It throws their belief system into total flux. The venom/condescension/disbelief pours out of them. It’s awesome. I can’t get enough of it.

2. Along those same lines, how funny is it when announcers try to rationally announce his games, run out of ways to say, "Another terrible pass by Tebow," pretend there’s logic involved, then eventually give up and just start laughing when he comes through late? I listened to Tebow’s fourth-quarter comeback in the car last night — the radio announcers (Ian Eagle and someone else) literally didn’t know what to say. They were just giggling like school kids. How can you explain this? Has there ever been a player who couldn’t even be successfully announced? During last night’s final drive, Eagle became so excited about Tebow's bowling over a Jets defensive back that he actually said the words, " … just got a mouthful of Tim Tebow!!!!"

3. I have watched something like 1,200 quarterbacks play that position the same way, or relatively the same way. I have never, ever, not ever, seen anyone play quarterback like Tim Tebow plays the position. It’s constantly entertaining beyond the scrambling. You never know if he’s going to complete even the simplest 5-yard pass to a wide-open guy; by that same token, you’re never surprised when he hits someone 40 yards downfield on the fly. It’s almost like Tebow is playing with a handicap, like he’s overcoming some sort of disability. He’s willing himself to become a decent NFL quarterback despite massive odds against him. I love it. He’s like Rocky Balboa crossed with Strap from Hoosiers crossed with some sports movie QB in a film that hasn’t been made yet.

4. I can’t remember another non-superstar athlete generating more feedback from my readers these past few weeks. If it were Tiger, Kobe, Favre or whomever, it would make sense. But the QB of a 5-5 team who completes 45 percent of his passes? Before we get to my Week 11 Quick Picks, here’s a sampling just from last night and this morning.

maybe "widely considered" is too strong. but yes. see, e.g., tebow greatest college player ever (about 3,550,000 results in 0.10 seconds

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 19 November 2011 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

raises a more general, and serious, question for me. how is it that tebow was so good in college, playing in a tough league where many players move on to the NFL, and yet he now looks so inept at the mechanics of the quarterback position in the NFL? put differently, why wouldn't those SEC defenses, dotted with pro-prospects, expose tebow's technical shortcomings almost as well as NFL defenses?

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 19 November 2011 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think you grasp the disparity in quality b/w college and pro

Ed Love (rip van wanko), Saturday, 19 November 2011 18:24 (twelve years ago) link

i guess i don't, in this context. yes, if florida was playing east idaho state every week, i'd easily see the disparity. but the defenses he faced week-in, week-out -- e.g., LSU; Alabama; Florida State; Auburn -- these are overstuffed with players that he'll be seeing week-in, week-out in NFL defenses. that's the part i don't get.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 19 November 2011 18:26 (twelve years ago) link

1. regardless which program most players dont make the pros
2. its all abt the schemes man, the complexity

ice cr?m, Saturday, 19 November 2011 18:30 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, i guess. i just checked alabama's 2010 NFL draft picks; it's a good list, but wouldn't by itself result in a jawdropping defense. but that, of course, doesn't consider the other alamaba defensive starters that weren't coming-out in the 2010 draft.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 19 November 2011 18:35 (twelve years ago) link

welcome to the wonderful world of college qb performance not projecting to the pros

ice cr?m, Saturday, 19 November 2011 18:39 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, really. so, despite the overwhelming statistical evidence favoring tebow's college numbers over payton and eli manning, tim couch, jamarcus russell and matt stafford:

it tells us that NFL talent evaluators are out of their freaking minds

And yet NFL evaluators, for some reason, aren't sold on Tebow. Couch and Russell are two bona fide NFL busts, even though pro football talent evaluators couldn't usher them into the league fast enough. Yet these same talent evaluators harbor grave doubts about the ability of the greatest and most efficient passer in SEC history to pass the ball at the next level.

Other executives seem obsessed by the trivia over Tebow's mechanics, while overlooking the rather irrefutable fact that he dominated college football like no player in memory and despite the fact that he was, by any objective measure, a much better passer than Couch, Russell, Stafford, and either of the Manning brothers.

so again: tim tebow will be the standard against which all future NFL quarterbacks will be judged.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 19 November 2011 18:43 (twelve years ago) link

Tebow was, by any measure, a better player, a better quarterback and, yes, a better passer than any of these No. 1 picks

lol

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 19 November 2011 18:43 (twelve years ago) link

I love this tim tebow narrative, it's so lol, love watching the highlights, it's like watching a poorly designed slingshot

tracy mcgr8080 (dayo), Saturday, 19 November 2011 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

one big thing imho is in college receivers get open like really open on nearly every play in a way thats rare in the pros, in the pros youre throwing the ball into these really small short lived windows, like yr receivers often not open yet when you release the ball, so accuracy timing and ability to read the defense are all super important in the pros in a way thats never really tested in college

ice cr?m, Saturday, 19 November 2011 18:50 (twelve years ago) link

accuracy like aaron rogers has. that's a really good point. it's a skill that wouldn't be as valuable in college if receivers are constantly getting open.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 19 November 2011 18:52 (twelve years ago) link

feel like ability to read the defense, recognize that a receiver is gonna be open in one second for one second, is even more important

ice cr?m, Saturday, 19 November 2011 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

raises a more general, and serious, question for me. how is it that tebow was so good in college, playing in a tough league where many players move on to the NFL, and yet he now looks so inept at the mechanics of the quarterback position in the NFL? put differently, why wouldn't those SEC defenses, dotted with pro-prospects, expose tebow's technical shortcomings almost as well as NFL defenses?

you're overrating the SEC. it's of course a very competitive college conference, but it's still the college game which doesnt really compare with nfl football at all. when you're projecting guys you can't overrate 'performance' you just have to look at individual skills

one big thing imho is in college receivers get open like really open on nearly every play in a way thats rare in the pros, in the pros youre throwing the ball into these really small short lived windows, like yr receivers often not open yet when you release the ball, so accuracy timing and ability to read the defense are all super important in the pros in a way thats never really tested in college

― ice cr?m, Saturday, November 19, 2011 1:50 PM (8 minutes ago) Bookmark

well also this is why big-time arm strength is a needed attribute for an elite QB. you need to fucking drive the ball to consistently fit into those tight windows. tebow's avg arm strength + slow delivery is one of the worst possible combinations for making decisive nfl throws

there was a malcolm gladwell article on why predicting nfl success for college qbs is particularly hard and it mostly comes down to time and the quality of the defense:

It had always been hard to predict how a college quarterback would fare in the pros. The professional game was, simply, faster and more complicated. With the advent of the spread, though, the correspondence between the two levels of play had broken down almost entirely. N.F.L. teams don’t run the spread. They can’t. The defenders in the pros are so much faster than their college counterparts that they would shoot through those big gaps in the offensive line and flatten the quarterback. In the N.F.L., the offensive line is bunched closely together. Daniel wouldn’t have five receivers. Most of the time, he’d have just three or four. He wouldn’t have the luxury of standing seven yards behind the center, planting his feet, and knowing instantly where to throw. He’d have to crouch right behind the center, take the snap directly, and run backward before planting his feet to throw. The onrushing defenders wouldn’t be seven yards away. They would be all around him, from the start. The defense would no longer have to show its hand, because the field would not be so spread out. It could now disguise its intentions.

Lamp, Saturday, 19 November 2011 19:34 (twelve years ago) link

there was another article - michael lewis, I think? - or at least lewis-esque about the fact that there really just aren't that many opportunities to prove yourself as a pro qb. a handful of new people a year get the chance to even start, and far far fewer get alex smith-like opportunities.

The defenders in the pros are so much faster than their college counterparts that they would shoot through those big gaps in the offensive line and flatten the quarterback.

idgi do players get faster when they get to the pros, like can you not play spread vs future pros in college

well, line splits are definitely a lot smaller in the pros. you would have to be insane to use mike leach style splits in the nfl

the problem is that to tie it to the teaching thing, he has to forward an argument thats blatantly false:

But there’s a hitch: no one knows what a person with the potential to be a great teacher looks like. The school system has a quarterback problem.

The problem with picking quarterbacks is that Chase Daniel’s performance can’t be predicted. The job he’s being groomed for is so particular and specialized that there is no way to know who will succeed at it and who won’t.

that last line in particular is just, c'mon, no

i do agree though that the scouts generally look at the wrong things, they love guys with "big arms" who can throw 50 yards downfield which is a throw they almost never have to make anyway. what's really important is reading defenses, knowing coverages, being able to adjust plays, and accuracy above all else, which is why guys like Rodgers, Manning, and Brady succeed where the "better athletes" will fail. the problem is that you never really know who's going to be able to adjust, IIRC nobody thought Cam Newton would have any success but it seems he'll be fine

well if you can't stomach Tebow now, don't expect the hoohah to die down anytime soon as long as he approaches at least some level of mediocrity and his team keeps winning (regardless of whether he has anything to do with it).

Hell, the media and half the fans were STILL on Michael Vick's jock pre-dogfighting, and would explain away all of his faults. Granted that 1,000 yard season as a QB was pretty neato but he still had horrible accuracy issues and all you'd hear was still things like "YOU HAVE TO GAMEPLAN FOR VICK" or "YOU CAN'T MEASURE HIM WITH TODAY'S STATISTICS!"

arm strength isnt really about the 50 yard bomb, it's about driving the ball on the deep out or the 22 yard dig, it's about fitting balls into tiny spaces (pause) - it's absolutely a necessary part of a franchise QB's toolkit. QBs who can throw with serious velocity are prized for a good reason, and QBs who struggle to drive the ball will also struggle with running multidimensional passing games that can attack every level of a defense. you can certainly make do with guys who lack arm strength if they make up for it in other areas, but it requires that you run an offense suited to his limitations, which of course makes you easier to defend

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000158803/article/new-york-jets-hopeful-theyll-find-suitor-for-tim-tebow

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport said Tuesday on "NFL Total Access" there's no buzz connecting Tebow to another team at this time. This is an unfortunate reality for the Jets, who sunk two draft picks and $2.5 million to obtain Tebow from the Denver Broncos last year. Tebow reportedly plans to attend voluntary workouts if he's still on the roster. Rapoport said the Jets are open to keeping Tebow in-house for minicamp and OTAs with the hopes that a suitor eventually emerges. And while Tebow could have a role in early team activities -- however awkward that might be -- Rapoport has been told it remains "highly unlikely" Tebow will be on the Jets by the time training camp begins in July.

i think the way this works is they try tebow at the half when brady gets badly injured, he has a crazy three touchdown, two turnover win; QB controversy on the week off; they start him and he has a weird flukey dominant game; a week of nonstop OMYGOD IS HE BETTER THAN BRADY and then three weeks of ugly hash until brady gets back; he angrily takes the ball out of tebow's hands and whips him all the way up to golgotha. then tebow rises on the third day and takes the seahawks to the superbowl. then he ascends and the hawks lose in overtime.

Brady did stop short of stamping his approval on the Patriots potentially using Tebow in a special package on offense, one that would send him to the sideline.

Not a joke.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 23:45 (ten years ago) link

Oh the guy will be huge on TV for college football. As bad Tebow is at throwing the football, I have a hard time believing that Brandon Wheedon is a better QB than him.

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/10/20/4859944/packers-vs-browns-brandon-weeden

Sad thing is that Tebow is definitely a good enough athlete, you have to think the guy could be a pro someplace else on the field. But hey, the guy has his principals, but I would think there would be something to the story if the guy agreed to being an H-Back or something of the sort and had success. The TV gig is always going to be there to an extent.

He might have the body type to be a fullback or a tight end but I don't think he could hack it. He was okay at running when he was with the Broncos but he added too much weight with the Jets.

Also his interviews were 100% platitudes. I doubt he could provide color commentary of value. He might be a good sideline reporter jock.

Tim Tebow has never been what everyone wanted him to be, and for that he became one of America’s most celebrated, and at times scorned, athletes.

He wore his faith on his sleeve – or at least his eye black with Bible verses. He was relentlessly positive in an era better known for bitterness and snark. He spent his free time visiting hospitals and speaking at prisons and caring about people few others care about. He freely admitted adhering to romantic restrictions that run counter to much of modern society, most notably that of a star athlete at the University of Florida.

For all of that he was lauded and laughed at and labeled, good and bad, and more specifically in ways that made him into whatever someone wanted him to be.

No matter what, he kept smiling. He kept explaining. He kept just being Tim, take it or leave it.

When Tebow’s NFL career gets discussed, it often boils down to a simple question: Why didn’t he just play another position?

The 6-foot-3, 245-pounder is an NFL-caliber athlete. What he wasn’t, at least not consistently, was an NFL quarterback. No shame in that. NFL rosters are littered with former college quarterbacks contributing in other ways.

Tebow had plenty of offers to become a tight end or an H-back or some utility piece. Bill Belichick, the master of Swiss Army knife players, even brought him into New England. Tebow wouldn’t budge. It was quarterback or bust. He went bust.

Now, at 29, Tebow is preparing to join the New York Mets organization to give baseball a try. He isn’t merely at peace with that, he’s thrilled with the challenge.

Yet he’s well aware of the lingering question … the question that produces an answer that makes little sense to some of Tebow’s most ardent fans and seems at odds with the too-simple narrative that was long ago formed around him. What it actually speaks to is precisely the self-made, secure cutting-his-own-path man that he’s always been.

“I think a lot of people don’t get it or understand it,” Tebow told Yahoo Sports on Thursday, as he promoted the 25th annual Allstate AFCA Good Works Team made up of college football players who demonstrate “good works’ in their communities far beyond the field.

“They say, ‘Why? Why not go to a different position in football?’ ” Tebow continued. “It’s because it’s not the game of football. It’s what you love doing in it. For me, it was the position of quarterback. And for me, now it’s pursuing what’s in my heart and what I want to go after, being the best baseball player I can be.”

In short, if he couldn’t be a quarterback, then he no longer wanted to be a football player. His love was with the position, not the game. His motivation came from the challenge of the specific job, not staying in the sport by any means necessary and certainly not by doing whatever people expected him to do or they think they would have done under similar circumstances.

“By nature I’m a people person,” Tebow said. “And I like making people happy. As far as pursuing your dreams and your passions, you have to do what is in your heart, not what other people want you to do. And that’s where I think, it’s tough, but you’ve got to choose your passion, you’ve got to choose your heart more than what people want you to do. And that’s what I’ve tried to do.”

Many had boxed Tebow into a clichéd definition: If he is a devout Christian (and he is) and a great teammate on championship teams (and he was), then he must also adhere to the supposedly conservative value of sacrificing all individual preference for the wishes of authority and the pursuit of dominance, a concept rooted deep in the ethos of American Puritanism.

What do you mean he won’t do anything for the team? What do you mean he won’t do anything to continue to play football? What do you mean he’d rather walk away unless he can play the game on his terms, at his chosen position?

The United States is a comment section of a nation these days, forever trying to define everyone and everything simply. Conservative or liberal. Republican or Democrat. Trump or Clinton.

It turns out Tim Tebow has been holding a gray crayon, coloring outside the lines this entire time.

He isn’t acting like a football player is supposed to act, where making the NFL is everything and winning games is the only thing. Of course, he’s also built his life to have the freedom of choice. Football isn’t his only way to make money and money isn’t his only, or even a top, motivation. Not playing football doesn’t hurt anyone. His charitable foundation is as big as ever; that’s what brings him joy.

“Helping people,” he said.

It turns out he didn’t just want to be a guy on the team. He wanted to be THE guy on the team. If that couldn’t happen, then suddenly the hits, the risk of injury, the potential concussions, the training, the time, the whatever, it wasn’t worth it. So he quit. Is that selfish? Is that admirable?

Just like with everything else with Tebow, you can take it or leave it, support him or not, attempt to understand or just make fun of him.

It’s his life. It’s always been his life.

“The two things I loved so much in sports was hitting a baseball and quarterbacking,” Tebow said. “Because both were so hard, because both were so tough. In football they are counting on you to win the game for your team in the end. Quarterback is the only position where they count the record. The record counts for you. So it’s tough.

“And hitting, if you go 3 for 10 it’s a really good thing. I just love those two things.”

Sports are not everything to him. Everything is doing those two things – the individual challenge of running an offense or hitting a curve – and those two things alone.

“I got a chance to pursue football and really live out my dream as a quarterback and there were highs and lows with that,” Tebow said. “And now I get to do that with baseball. I’m excited about that.”

He may never make it as a baseball player, may never hit 3 for 10, not in the minors, not in the majors. He doesn’t care. He’s content with that. It’s about the attempt. It’s about the gift of being able to do it his way.

Everyone saw Tim Tebow as Christian conservative football star, the purest distilled example of some kind of ultra All-American alpha dog, establishment-first athlete. Clear eyes. Full hearts. Etc.

Turns out that wasn’t him. Not all of him. Turns out that if you paid close enough attention, that never was him. Turns out he’s a lot more than that, a guy who knows what he wants and won’t compromise, even if that’s what everyone expected him to do, even if that’s what everyone would have cheered him for doing.

It turns out he’s just Tim, a baseball player now, but otherwise the same as he’s always been.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Tim Tebow is still looking for his first hit with the Scottsdale Scorpions. But on Wednesday night he reached base, drove in a run and got his jersey dirty in his second game in the Arizona Fall League.

Tebow, playing left field and batting seventh in the order, walked in the bottom of the second and got his first RBI in the fourth on a fielder’s choice.

Runners were at first and third when Tebow hit a grounder to the second baseman, who threw to the shortstop for the force as Tebow beat the relay throw to first and the runner scored from third.

Later in the inning, Tebow was thrown out on a feet-first slide at home plate on a fielder’s choice and fans cheered as he rose to his feet in a dirt-streaked uniform.

"Played hard today, ' 'Scorpions manager Tom Goodwin said of Tebow.
