And this isn't a knock on Lamar. Every NFL organization should be constantly asking themselves how to best put their QB in position to succeed. That the Ravens are one of the few orgs to actually do so isn't Lamar's fault, it's a credit to BAL. He will win the MVP and deserve it— new-age analytical (@benbbaldwin) December 26, 2019

Patriots gonna win it all this year
― frogbs, Monday, 30 December 2019 15:17 (four years ago) link
i certainly wouldn't be shocked, though they definitely haven't looked like even a top 5 team this year. if they do get past KC, it's hard for me to envision how they'd beat Baltimore on the road, unless all their skill position guys just magically level up simultaneously.
― Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 30 December 2019 15:22 (four years ago) link
they are like some hellish demon from a horror movie, I will not believe they've been defeated until the clock reads 0:00 and they have less points than their opponent. they still have the 2nd best point differential in the league & a coach who's famous for figuring out how to beat good teams in the playoffs
― frogbs, Monday, 30 December 2019 15:32 (four years ago) link
seriously though you're probably right I can't see them getting past KC or Baltimore. that said they will probably demolish Tennessee this weekend, beating inferior teams in the playoffs by 30 is just what Belichick does
Buffalo/Houston is kind of an interesting game, both of these are teams you'd think would be one-and-done but one of them has to win. Houston has the potential to make this a rout but I think Buffalo is better all around, can see their defense giving Watson a hard time
Seattle @ Philly could also be interesting, believe it or not the Seahawks have a point differential of only +7 this year which is pretty bad for a playoff team (though still better than Houston who sits at -7)
hard to see Minnesota having much of a chance vs the New Orleans juggernaut, Vikings kinda look like the classic "peaked a month too early" playoff team
― frogbs, Monday, 30 December 2019 15:41 (four years ago) link
i'm still traumatized by the philly-seahawks game i went to in the bitter cold + rain to watch the eagles play their worst football of the year but they've obviously figured something out over the last month that hopefully they can use. i'm cautiously optimistic!
― Mordy, Monday, 30 December 2019 15:42 (four years ago) link
Houston's offense just seems to rely so much on Will Fuller but you can't bank on him ever being healthy, that's basically why I picked Buffalo.
I think TN will give the Pats a good game, the Titans have played really well lately and I'm just a little dubious as to whether NE's offense is really capable of blowing out anybody right now.
think you're right about the Vikes, especially if Dalvin Cook is out or limited.
― Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 30 December 2019 15:45 (four years ago) link
here's what my book says:
Texans -3Patriots -4.5Saints -8Seahawks -2
think Bills, Pats, and Eagles could all be good bets
― frogbs, Monday, 30 December 2019 16:10 (four years ago) link
i have zero faith in the eagles, but . . . home dogs
― mookieproof, Monday, 30 December 2019 17:34 (four years ago) link
my guesses were Texans -3.5, Pats -6, Saints -7 and Seahawks -1. as much as the Pats offense has looked like shit for most of the year I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable picking Tennessee to cover there.
― Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 30 December 2019 17:52 (four years ago) link
i don't think Philly can be favored with all of their injuries, now losing Brandon Brooks, possibly Miles Sanders, not sure if they'll have Ertz back. I know Seattle's D is banged up too but the Eagles are a damn infirmary.

anyway my bets for this weekend
Bills/Texans under 43 - had to figure one of these two offenses were gonna come out flatPats -4.5 - bet big on this one, I don't see this game being closeSaints -7.5 - think the Vikings are actually kinda underrated coming into the playoffs but the Saints look great on both sides and I can see their defense stifling Minnesota all game
― frogbs, Saturday, 4 January 2020 23:46 (four years ago) link
Pats -4.5 - bet big on this one, I don't see this game being close

― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 4 January 2020 23:54 (four years ago) link
true but they've still got the #2 point differential in the league & Pats at home vs. a team with little playoff experience is a situation they pretty much always thrive in. I realize they've not looked good recently but the idea that they'd only be a slight favorite on a neutral field seems like a big overcorrection

was kinda predictable for the bills to fall off after that incredible opening script, but they looked a lot better than their point output for three quarters. conservative decision-making and poor ball security bit them in the ass.

I know no one likes to talk about reffing but the Bills have legit reason to be upset
that DeAndre Carter play at the beginning of the 2nd, where he gets the kickoff in the end zone, then tosses the ball to the ref - technically that should have been a safety. the rulebook is actually pretty unambiguous about this. but the refs decided, "eh, spirit of the rule" and gave him the touchback anyway. I don't mind that call at all by the way. but later the Bills got called for a blindside block on a play that felt more like a technicality - the rule was made to prevent guys from getting leveled, not blocked away from the play for a second too long - and that call took them out of the edge of FG range, costing them a chance to walk it off
obviously the Bills did many many other things to lose that came but still
also lol @ the Saints losing another playoff game on missed pass interference

Niners are loaded, but would hate to see SF or the Pack win it all. Only redeeming quality of the Niners winning is that it would tie them back up with the Pats and Pittsburgh. Shanahan Jr. kinda looks like a pro poker player with that red ballhat.
I'm kinda hoping for Tennessee all the way, but I would be ok with KC winning the Superbowl. I got to see it before I believe it on an Andy Reid team winning it all.

idk how good LaFleur really is as a coach but the fact that GB is 13-3 and headed to the NFCCG despite this being arguably Rodgers worst full season since his rookie year makes the fact that McCarthy landed arguably the most coveted HC job in the NFL a tad perplexing

I’d rather let my fandom die with the Vegas move tbh the only conceivable way you’d switch is if you’re one of those weirdos that are just random homers for local teams across the board, casual fans, or highly suggestible idiots. like seriously it is only something that outside observers, Niners upper managment & non fans would postulate

i’m sure there’s a book or article, maybe multiple, that addresses my questions below on the sociology of the nfl fandom, what is it?
what is more illogical, allegiance to an nfl team by “stadium geography,” or allegiance to any nfl team at all?
are we more accurately described as allies of our fellow fan-groups, or are we fans of coach-player groups? Or of logos? Or are we committed to owner/mgmt/coach biz “projects”?

Florida has a ton of transplant fans, which is probably why all three teams have trouble selling out their games. Everybody moving here to retire or for lower cost of living means we get lots of Jet fans (despicable), Cowboys fans, just fans from all over.
The allegiances in Florida at least somewhat depend on when you started watching football, where you live, and how many Florida teams existed at the time.
I live nowhere near Miami, but I became a Dolphins fan because my grandpa, a Giants fan who lived in NY, moved to FL, and decided to adopt an AFC team. At the time, the only Florida team was the Fins, so that was easy. by the time I was born, the Bucs existed but lived nowhere near us, and it was creamsicle era terribleness, so it became a way we bonded, watching the Dolphins together.
prior to the Jags, NFL fans seemed to gravitate towards Miami over TAmpa Bay cos Marino and also always in playoff contention, the Bucs were terrible. once the Dungy era started and they became good, a lot more people broke for Tampa Bay (or the ones in hiding came back), and once the Jags showed up...idk, idk if I recall the state EVER being fanatical about this team, just Duval county, who finally didn't have to travel 3 -5 hours to see a game. it did siphon away a bit from each team.
weirdly though I always felt like more of a Marino fan than a Dolphins fan growing up, to the point that when there were rumors after he was let go by Miami that he would wind up in Minnesota, I considered jumping to be a Vikes fan. never happened though.
I personally don't get the idea of abandoning an old team because you move. I do get adding a new team to root for though. like my grandpa did.
basically as long as you don't root for the Jets I won't vivisect you
― Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 19:36 (four years ago) link
should say Tampa was much closer to me growing up than Miami, but I followed in my grandpa's footsteps. when I go to games I usually have a moment where I'm going to my seat where I look up and say his name. we never got to go to one together.
― Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 19:37 (four years ago) link
geographic pride + before red zone etc your local team was the only one whose game you could see every week

i have found it harder to care abt Chicago sports since moving to L.A., i kinda cut myself off from following the teams there religiously like i used to (btw i follow the NBA and have a Bulls cap but it's almost entirely red so i stopped wearing it out as much after a few too many double takes from ppl) and while i still keep one eye on the Cubs i feel like my watch has somewhat ended now that they won the series in my lifetime. so when my brother calls to enthuse about Patrick Kane scoring his 1,000th career point for the Blackhawks i frantically try to remember who he is. since this is an NFL thread i'll add that it's extremely easy to ignore the Bears and i've also stopped watching the games and playing fantasy football but i still enjoy following the stats and the drama and i'll catch games if i'm out sometimes.

Aaron Rodgers‘ comments about his Christian upbringing and questioning his faith have raised a lot of eyebrows — especially those of his estranged family.During an intimate conversation with girlfriend Danica Patrick on her Pretty Intense podcast, Green Bay Packers quarterback said that he had trouble connecting with his religious community as a child.“Most people that I knew, church was just… you just had to go,” the Super Bowl XLV champion recalled. But Rodgers’ family was not impressed with his candid comments, a source tells PEOPLE.“They were dismayed,” says the insider. “The family is very dedicated to their Christian faith.”“To them, his comments are basically a slap in the face to the fundamentals of who they are. It’s sad.”In a 2017 interview with the New York Times, the family patriarch, Ed Rodgers, said that “fame can change things,” and that Aaron allegedly stopped talking to his family members at the end of 2014, shortly after he began dating actress Olivia Munn.During the Pretty Intense podcast, Rodgers told Patrick that he has gone down a path to a “different type of spirituality” that is more meaningful to him than what he experienced as a child.“I don’t know how you can believe in a God who wants to condemn most of the planet to a fiery hell,” he said. “What type of loving, sensitive, omnipresent, omnipotent being wants to condemn his beautiful creation to a fiery hell at the end of all this?”Rodgers did not specifically refer to himself as an atheist, but he said that religion can divide people.“Religion can be a crutch, it can be something that people have to have to make themselves feel better,” Rodgers continued. “Because it’s set up binary, it’s us and them, saved and unsaved, heaven and hell, it’s enlightened and heathen, it’s holy and righteous … that makes a lot of people feel better about themselves.”

if that's what caused the friction between him and his family (and I know the article doesn't even remotely state that), that'd be so anticlimactic

had no idea Eli made the Top 10 in so many categories, I guess just making it 200+ games as a starting QB will do that

I really don't like the Niners, but I love their type of football.
I hope they win and Jimmy G. only throws 4 passes this time.
― earlnash, Monday, 27 January 2020 23:46 (four years ago) link
I'm kinda thinking now SF should win, but I'd rather KC get a title than SF, even though I love the running back based offense. I still hate the Niners for being good for two decades and beating the Bears and Bengals a few times when it mattered.
― earlnash, Sunday, 2 February 2020 22:46 (four years ago) link
Plus I think the Steelers, Niners and Pats all having 6 Superbowl titles would have to be considered a sign of the Apocalypse.
― earlnash, Sunday, 2 February 2020 22:48 (four years ago) link
Also rooting KC but thinking SF.
lagoon better post here, hope there's not some dumb basketball game going on

I've enjoyed watching SF's old-school tactics this season, but I'd rather see KC win tonight and I think they will

you can replicate the experience of watching them any day of the year by scrolling through popular posts on twitter reddit and maybe a little facebook for 15 minutes
