@EdBouchette
Steelers teammates not happy with Le’Veon Bell no show, led by vet G Ramon Foster, their player rep:
“What do you do? here’s a guy who doesn’t give a damn, I guess so we’ll treatit as such. I just hate it came to this. “

@EdBouchette
More Ramon Foster on Bell: “He’s making 7 times what I make twice as much as Al (Villanueva) is making and we’re the guys who do it for him.”

¯\_(🏈 )_/¯ (daria-g), Friday, 7 September 2018 04:20 (five years ago) link

feel like I'm growing out of the NFL, I just did not care about this game at all and outside of the return of the Philly special it sounds like it really sucked

last season was like this too wasn't it? may be a good time to just bet the under on every game

frogbs, Friday, 7 September 2018 14:05 (five years ago) link

only watched through 3 quarters but yeah that was a bad game. september being preseason 2 does seem to really be a thing in the modern nfl. overall last season was on balance a very good one in terms of entertainment tho, imo anyway. and worth remembering the last game before this one had 74 points.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 7 September 2018 14:22 (five years ago) link

the officiating was really bad but the game itself had some exciting moments. it was a low scoring game which is a bummer but actually it was a pretty close score to the post-season game btwn them last year so not totally unexpected. and it ended with an almost identical drive and failure to connect with julio for the td to win as that game so there was some nice symmetry too. some of the eagles defensive stops were impressive - darby looked unstoppable. ajayi looks really good. passing game was anemic on philly's side and it looks like atlanta's entire offense is julio jones and they for some reason can march down the field at will but cannot score in the red zone. kinda a weird game. obv thrilled about the result.

Mordy, Friday, 7 September 2018 14:58 (five years ago) link

atl were p garbage on offense, ryan poor and playcalling as bad as the worst parts of last season. feels like something potentially special there could be squandered if they don't get their shit together. but at the same time eagles D looked p nice again, best until in the game by a ways and not looking they're set with 1 ring. philly offense will be clever even when they're not particularly good.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 7 September 2018 15:24 (five years ago) link

ryan missed a lot of makeable throws, especially in the red zone. they have too much talent on offense to look that discombobulated in opposing territory.

guardians of the gums: i am tooth (voodoo chili), Friday, 7 September 2018 15:53 (five years ago) link

is there a definitive piece out there on how Bad Football has become immune to serious critique and has become a significant part of the nfl's remaining entertainment value? the number of chuckle-y, eyerolling pieces i've seen today that are like "lol no one knows what a catch is, the officiating is terrible, both of these teams sucked, yay football is back!" seems even higher than usual. does this have analogues in other sports? i'm struggling to think of any.

call all destroyer, Friday, 7 September 2018 16:02 (five years ago) link

i can't recall seeing an article that made that argument. i'd speculate what you're observing is more a change in the way ppl talk about football (impact internet/social media etc) than there being more Bad Football per se, or it being given more of a pass.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 7 September 2018 16:18 (five years ago) link

i think it started on the internet but ime it's made several inroads to more mainstream media (e.g. sports talk radio) and started to filter down to the fanbase as a whole, and it's not going to be easy to put it back in the box. the visibility of something like a catch rule that is unenforceable even with replay isn't lost on anyone, and i feel like collectively there is just a lot of throwing up of hands about that problem. idk maybe there are purists out there for whom bad football actually detracts from their enjoyment. i would love to hear from them!

i don't think there's (much) more bad football these days although roster construction favoring young players plus lack of practice time is going to continue to gnaw.

call all destroyer, Friday, 7 September 2018 16:41 (five years ago) link

i agree, i meant internet as a starting point, but it has definitely colored football talk across media now. it comes with the ever finer granularity of analysis imo - more of each game is being watched, and with more discernment. when 32 teams are all getting real exposure, you realize that most of them are part- or all the way garbage, and always have been. it's a weird game that's hard to play and complex, which increases the opportunities for players and officials to look bad. and the complexity demands specialization, which in turn means no one gets a break for being on the field and doing anything subpar, unlike maybe a shooting guard who can't play defense, or a pitcher who can't hit.

barnwell has a thing about disproving the recurring claims over the years that football is getting worse that i recall being generally convincing, with appropriate caveats for the rigor of his analysis.

catch rule situation is a str8 disgrace tho, no excuses there.

https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/09/07/seattle-seahawks-dismantling-rift-russell-wilson-pete-carroll

this is v interesting. article is mostly balanced on the cause of the seahawks' implosion, although the primary sources are the players who are blaming carroll/the FO/wilson to an extent. but...kind of sounds like the players in question are assholes and probably the real problem? would be interested in other ppl's takes, not convinced of my read but several of the player quotes rubbed me the wrong way.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 7 September 2018 17:24 (five years ago) link

richard sherman and russell wilson both seem insufferable in very different ways. the rest of it is noise, seattle had their 5-year window like just about every elite roster does. the idea that people were asked to treat wilson differently at a time when he hadn't really earned that right rings true but this is all about age, injuries, and salaries.

an entire subgenre of baseball writing is essentially this, although the lol/yay stuff comes from the kornheiser/stephen a. types rather than the strict baseball ppl.

the complaints are generally that strikeouts and home runs are way up (and thus there are fewer balls in play) and that half the league isn't really trying to win. neither is wrong

how much win probability did Nagy punt by kicking the FG on that final drive? feel like that was a no-brainer to go for it on 4th and 1 especially with Rodgers in god mode. turned into Andy Reid there.

frogbs, Monday, 10 September 2018 13:39 (five years ago) link

the first play that worried me was when they went for it on 4th down and Trubisky ran into his own dude, nearly giving us Butt Fumble v2.0.

beard papa, Monday, 10 September 2018 20:17 (five years ago) link

Kyle Fuller dropping a ball that hit him right in the hands was a pretty big deal too

Rodgers deserves plenty of credit (as do Cobb & Adams) but the Bears blew that in five different ways

It's almost as if the "Bears kick a FG to go up 6 and allow Rodgers to complete a game-winning drive" plotline was preordained by God himself. I checked Twitter w/ 7 minutes to go and saw a dozen variations of that idea. the Packers only needing 18 seconds to get the game winner was pretty unexpected though

I've only watched a couple of quarters all year, including the 4th quarter of the Bengals/Fish game. Reading the recaps and stats, I can't tell who is really good this year.

Rams and Chiefs would be a weird Superbowl matchup, seems very unlikely.

earlnash, Monday, 8 October 2018 13:28 (five years ago) link

yeah Rams & Chiefs are the only two teams that haven't really embarrassed themselves yet

frogbs, Monday, 8 October 2018 13:33 (five years ago) link

let's all just enjoy the chiefs before they fade precipitously and exit the playoffs 0-1. altho the afc looks like it'll be a worse shambles than expected even. maybe the jags will pull their shit together and yesterday will be an aberration for bortles. seemed like the ravens might be scraping something together until yesterday too. hard to believe in cincy.

rams do seem v legit, altho it was funny that when the rams were shit they kept beating the hawks when seattle was good, and the script nearly flipped on them yesterday. bears look p nice too. not sure what happened to the saints defense, but maybe they'll click again thru the season, or maybe last year was the aberration for them.

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Monday, 8 October 2018 18:05 (five years ago) link

the bills are worse than miami, they're a contender. that vikings result is not going to become any more explicable as the season wears on. raiders look like the other genuinely bad team in the afc. arizona vs niners might be a playoff for the #1 pick. the giants are probably a notch up from them but maybe not, it would be great if they're truly as bad as they have seemed at times.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 8 October 2018 18:11 (five years ago) link

the niners have been brutally unlucky with injuries of course, those other teams all somehow planned to be like this

this has got to be the end of the line for Mike McCarthy, right? it's pretty clear that, in addition to all the issues with his in-game decision making, the Packers are just not a well-coached team - they regularly blow blocking assignments, screw up routes, make boneheaded special teams decisions, waste timeouts for no reason, etc. etc. I mean, it's been a hard-luck season all around, between the dumb roughing calls directly costing them games, to the Ty Montgomery kickoff return fumble, and of course that game where they missed 16 points worth of kicks & turned it over 4 times...but they're a better team than this. These were all winnable games!!

miss u eric mangini

mookieproof, Monday, 26 November 2018 17:32 (five years ago) link

i think pretty clearly the top tier are Belichick, Reid, Tomlin, and Payton. Though w/Payton, i was surprised to see that he's had 7 winning seasons and 5 at .500 or worse, i thought he'd been better than that. I guess I'd slept on those three consecutive 7-9 seasons prior to last season.

omar little, Monday, 26 November 2018 17:42 (five years ago) link

I believe in Shannahan still. Needs a full season with a reasonably healthy and/or not domestic abusing roster.

Spottie, Monday, 26 November 2018 18:37 (five years ago) link

I think it's pretty well accepted by now that Rodgers + a halfway decent coach would get you at least 2 SBs by now. Who knows how true that is but I think it's clear that the team's success came in spite of McCarthy, not because of it. He may get another HC gig but I'd be shocked if he's still in the league a decade from now.

frogbs, Monday, 26 November 2018 19:21 (five years ago) link

yeah i think for too long people were making the mistake of seeing the Packers' success as a result of a Rodgers/McCarthy partnership as opposed to a guy who is in the conversation for greatest QB of all-time dragging a coach along with him. I think there was a wish that this would be a Belichick/Brady situation, and it could have been i think, there hasn't been a single dominant NFC team for the past decade but the Packers were the closest.

omar little, Monday, 26 November 2018 19:54 (five years ago) link

it's hilarious our local sports talk was reading comments from ppl in WI that think Rodgers is "uncoachable" and needs to be benched and all this shit too funny

It's like...even if you didn't value Rodgers as much as most, I think you have to put him in the top 10 QBs of all time and I don't think McCarthy is on anyone's top 10 coaches, or top 20, 50, 100 list

The Poppy Bush AutoZone (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 26 November 2018 20:04 (five years ago) link

Yeah I'm looking at their Super Bowl season again and remembering how many games they either blew or came close to blowing thanks to McCarthy's singular obsession with "establishing the run", his inability to design a single reliable short-yardage play, and his late-game strategy of "run-run-pass-punt". they got Vick's Eagles in the WC game and absolutely dominated them through three quarters, but just completely shut down their offense in the 4th and nearly let them come back and tie it. 4 years later at Seattle they did the same thing and it cost them a trip to the Super Bowl.

one thing I've definitely noticed is how he added trick plays and fakes into his arsenal around 2012 but seems to pick the absolute worst times to deploy them. like running that fake punt vs. Miami, sure it caught them off guard and it wound up working but they were at a point in the game where Miami getting a cheap turnover was literally their only hope. see also his 4th-and-1 playcalling where he just rams it up the middle with the RB starting 3 years behind the line of scrimmage. you see that formation and you immediately know it isn't gonna work, and you just know that McCarthy is gonna throw his hands up and say, "see! I told ya going for it on 4th was dumb!"

frogbs, Monday, 26 November 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link

I mean, all you really need to look at is McCarthy's record without Rodgers. Outside of a few magical Matt Flynn games they basically transform into a league-worst offense. obviously losing a great QB is gonna be tough but coaches like Belichick and Reid have managed pretty respectable records when their guys went down.

Reid managed a 53-27 record w/Alex Smith behind center and his success in Philly may be more impressive if you consider McNabb to have been a great but deeply inconsistent QB.

sports fans are great, i assume every fanbase has their own example of "run the bum out of town!" chatter when an all-time great player has some manufactured flaw. probably last season Saints fans were yelling that Drew Brees was holding them back.

it made some sense when Rodgers was backing up Favre and was clearly going to be at least decent...makes a lot less sense now that our backup is the only starter boneheaded enough to lose to Brett Hundley

the defense was pretty awful but they did have some nicely timed takeaways and tackles for loss, as well as dallas penalties. I know complaining about officiating is pointless, but that non-overturn on the opening kickoff and the phantom call on goddaert late in the 4th were pretty egregious

I'm interested in the Colts as they have been completely off the national TV radar, I have not seen them play this season. Cowboys looked pretty good the last couple of games I have seen, so Indy swatting them down in a shutout like that has me curious. From what I am reading, the Colts have a young defense and o-line that is starting to really figure it out and are as balanced right now as they have ever been.

CINCINNATI -- The Bengals have parted ways with longtime coach Marvin Lewis, who endorsed his friend Hue Jackson as his replacement.

Lewis had one season remaining on a contract extension he signed last year. In a statement, the team said the decision was mutual.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/25653722/bengals-coach-marvin-lewis-part-ways-6-10-season

omar little, Monday, 31 December 2018 17:55 (five years ago) link

considering how fucking cheap the bengals are, it's surprising they canned him with a year left on his contract

i also endorse hue jackson as his replacement just for the baker mayfield lolz

mookieproof, Monday, 31 December 2018 20:30 (five years ago) link

Marvin Lewis is a decent coach, the guy seems to have a knack for finding and developing talent. AFC South is pretty brutal conference and having to get over both the Steelers and Ravens both is a bigger task than most divisions in football. They won the division a couple of times going like 10-6 with the Ravens and Steelers going like 9-7... A couple of the playoff losses were totally fluky as they lost Palmer in the first series of the first playoff game and his knee was always a bit bonky after that play. His best team lost Dalton down the stretch run and had that insane loss to the Steelers with a backup QB a couple years ago.

earlnash, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 00:39 (five years ago) link

Yeah there’s definitely an element of luck to that, much as there was when McCarthy was like 0-6 in OT games (several of which were in the playoffs). He’s probably the best guy on the market, right?

frogbs, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 01:18 (five years ago) link

marvin lewis may have been as successful as was possible for a team controlled by mike brown, but what talent did he find or develop? not sure i'm willing to credit him with turning the undrafted burfict into a . . . notable player

the ravens and steelers were ~good~ during lewis' tenure, but neither was by any means the patriots, and god knows the browns were the browns

mookieproof, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 01:35 (five years ago) link

Steelers made the playoffs 10 times since 05, went to 3 Superbowls and won 2.
Ravens made the playoffs 9 times since '05 and won a Superbowl.

That's pretty good. Outside the Pats, I think the only division that has won 3 SB would be NFC East (Giants x2, Eagles last year)... NFC South has had Saints, Falcons and Panthers be in the playoffs with some regularity.

Bengals have had a good run of drafting on defense. Cincy was able to keep a good part of that core together for a while too. Some of these guys have had really long careers...

Geno Atkins
Carlos Dunlap
Domata Peko
Frostee Rucker
Rey Maualuga
Leon Hall
Jonathan Joseph

Lewis isn't quite Marty Schottenheimer, but he has had middling success.

earlnash, Tuesday, 1 January 2019 03:20 (five years ago) link

well, the steelers made the playoffs that many times because they went 26-8 against his bengals

anyway, worlds will collide when the steelers hire him to run their defense next year

k3vin k., Tuesday, 1 January 2019 06:34 (five years ago) link

Interesting stat: the six highest-paid QBs - Rodgers, Ryan, Cousins, Stafford, Garrappolo (lol), and Carr (double lol) - all missed the playoffs this year. Goff, Trubisky, Mahomes, Dak, Foles, and Lamar Jackson are all in. Maybe the "QB is everything" era is over.
