yeah.
i mean, outside of the process itself, ok josh is one of the most qualified hc candidates out there, but things like mike vrabel hire at ten, and greg olson at oak too, have not been inspiring appointments in this regard. coordinator level is the real ugly scene that makes the hc level such a problem. i believe i am correct in saying there is 1 black oc in the whole nfl. i think flores at ne will make it around 10 black dcs but cmon, this shit is horrendous.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the final four teams expected to be in the running for his services are the Broncos, Cardinals, Jets, and Vikings.
Let's see.
Jets -- ANY dude that willing walks into that club has to know in the end, it won't work out. Forget it Kirk, it's the Jets.
Cardinals - They lost for nearly 40 years and had a couple of decent teams. Probably the lowest pressure place to go.
Vikings -- They are the best team and last year was very close. Can they repeat that and take that next step, it's a hard thing to do. Will they be setting fire to the future by signing such an expensive player. I'd say this team would be the highest pressure to join as really anything less than getting to a Superbowl is a failure next year.
Broncos - They still have quite a bit of talent and the club has been good about finding players. While improvement would be expected, would not be expected to 'win it all' as much as be in the playoff discussions.

thought Keenum to Denver was confirmed. seems good for them.
Bradford to AZ for $20 million (!!!), $15 mil of which is guaranteed (!!!!!!) is insane, the dude plays a few mediocre games each season and then goes down with another knee injury. I thought he'd be a backup for sure.
idk what to think of the Cousins deal yet. seems like another in a long like of marquee Vikings signings but for once they actually have a decent team around them. the Vikes can regress a bit in the O-line and still put up big passing numbers. still, that's uh...quite a bit of guaranteed money.

Jordy to the Raiders for 2 years/$15 million. sounds like he really wanted to stay in GB but they weren't offering much over the minimum
not sure I understand what GB is doing. Rodgers to Jordy has been the best QB-WR combo in the league since 2010. He's a fan favorite and Rodgers' favorite guy. Dude was still pretty good last year when 12 was on the field. Hundley couldn't do shit with him but that's because Hundley sucks. I get that 32 is right around when you wanna be cutting WRs but even still, GB's got like 2-3 more years of Aaron Rodgers in his prime, why take away his best weapon like that. damn it all.

i'm in favor of simplifying the rule however:
if someone is bobbling the ball while they go out of bounds and end up w/ full control (it never touches the ground) but they didn't secure it until out of bounds - a catch?
if someone obviously catches it (they seem to have complete control) but either while going to the ground or through a defensive player hitting the ball, it pops loose. is this a fumble?
― Mordy, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 18:07 (six years ago) link
per the nfl no to the first one. in my nfl it would be a catch.
on the second, if the player is down before the ball comes out it's not a fumble, otherwise it is
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 18:14 (six years ago) link
that would kind of encourage the sideline to get in the way to make it difficult for the receiver to secure the catch OOB, right?
― frogbs, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 18:43 (six years ago) link
there are already sideline violations that would apply if someone actively tried to interfere
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 19:00 (six years ago) link
common sense dictates that you should have control of the ball and two feet in for it to be a catch. the controversy happens, iirc, when a player does this but shifts or adjusts the ball within his arms as he's preparing to go down. imo it's usually pretty easy to decide whether the player did this in a conscious, controlled fashion or not and that should be the rule

Bryant is pretty good but way over-rated in the same way many Cowboys end up being. Even when he was really fast earlier in his career, the guy seemed to me to drop a ton of balls. Don't think he was anywhere top level as like Julio Jones or Calvin Johnson.
You chuck the ball around for well over 4000 yards or more every year, someone is going to catch 80 balls and have a 1000 yard season.
Someone might pay for the brand name, but at best Bryant is a #2 receiver now that's going to have to muscle for short passes and I don't know if he's got the hands to stick and get paid at that job.
I'd put bets on the Hatcats trying to sign him, that seems like a dopey move they would make.

Bengals usually like to develop their own 'talent', Mike Brown is usually way too cheap to sign free agents.
Adam Jones is still available on the free agent market I believe. Wild man has now played 11 years in the NFL and that is something that seemed really unlikely in his first couple years in the pros.
I also saw that Richie Incognito has called it a career because of 'pain'. I'd say one of the more infamous players of his time.

There's no position harder to draft correctly than QB and the Browns front office has a dismal record at sniffing out who can make the jump to the pros. I give Mayfield about 4 to 1 against his being a franchise QB, but no QB pick is ever much better than 50-50, so every dip in the QB draft pool is a gamble.
I would have picked Saquan Barkley as a sure thing and taken whatever top QB prospect was left on the board by the time their next pick came around, but I have no illusions that I'd do better than the Browns front office irl.

yea I know I'm probably the 1000000th person to make that observation but still
Browns V.P. of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith had plenty to say on Monday about how the team settled on quarterback Baker Mayfield. Highsmith also shared some insights on why the Browns didn’t settle on quarterback Josh Rosen.“I was at an airport,” Highsmith said Monday at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, via the Canton Repository. “UCLA’s volleyball team was in front of me. You heard so much about Rosen. He’s this or that. We all know how people talk.“So I asked one of the volleyball coaches, ‘What’s Rosen like?’ He said, ‘Aaaa, you should probably ask his girlfriend. She’s one of the players. She’s over there.’“I’m like, ‘All right coach. That’s good enough.’ . . . I don’t know what all this means, but there was something about him that bothered me.”

why is it that every time someone in the browns front office has opened their mouth since the draft it has been to spout some dumbass reason for why they picked mayfield or didn't pick another guy. it almost seems too much, like it's an elaborate troll, but the simplest answer is browns
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:12 (five years ago) link
Josh Rosen rules and I'm glad he didn't go to that cursed franchise full of idiots who make personnel decisions for literally no reason
this is actually dumber than the time they drafted Johnny Football because some homeless guy told them to do it
― frogbs, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:18 (five years ago) link
It’s insane, they didn’t pass on him based on his gf’s opinion, they passed based on her volleyball coach not having an opinion. I can’t even believe I read that. If Rosen turns into Wentz or even Goff I hope everyone is fired.
― omar little, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 19:04 (five years ago) link

Nah, Baker Mayfield’s legit. The Browns are fine.
― Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 20:37 (five years ago) link

― Mordy, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 20:42 (five years ago) link
the Browns may be fine I'm just surprised that a franchise known for blowing draft picks would publicly admit that their due diligence with a top ten QB prospect partially included their VP of player personnel deciding to not walk a few yards to talk to someone who intimately knew the QB because he didn't like how someone else phrased their non-opinion.

not sure how real the pats' reported interest was, mayfield's ppl basically made them qualify their interest to even let them meet with him, so they had to say something.
most ppl i respect are saying 1) the real unknown with him is how much you can separate his great #s from lincoln riley and 2) the browns will need to develop an offense around him and not just try to cram him in whatever system. so i think the key to whether he has a successful career is who cle hire to replace hue when he gets fired midseason.

In nearly two hours of dramatic and tearful testimony at a preliminary hearing on Thursday morning, Reuben Foster’s ex-girlfriend Elissa Ennis testified that the 49ers linebacker never hit her, never broke her cell phone, and that she lied repeatedly to investigators about the Feb. 11 incident that sent Foster to jail.“I was pissed,” Ennis testified under oath, saying that Foster had broken up with her in the morning before she called 911, so she fabricated domestic violence allegations. “I wanted to end him.”Joshua Bentley, Foster’s attorney, then cross-examined Ennis: “Is it true that you told Foster in texts after the arrest that, ‘your career is over, you’re going after him, you’re going after the Niners, and you’re going after his coaches?'”“Yes sir,” Ennis replied, breaking down in tears.Ennis then admitted to having no problem lying to investigators, and she acknowledged that she had falsely accused another ex-boyfriend of domestic violence in 2011 after he tried to break up with her.“I’m sorry, I really am,” Ennis said crying. “I’d like to apologize to everyone.”

Rob’s dad, brothers and pals who came with him to cheer on Team Gronkowski placed numerous $69 bets on his horse to place. Each of those wagers paid out to the tune of $1200.“I went to London and I dominated that game, we dominated that game as a team. This horse is coming from London now and playing its first game in the States, so hopefully that happens.”The group settles in at a reserved table overlooking the track and gets to work on a tub of Coors Light. Gronk smiles down on his subjects and practices his royal wave, greeting fans with a “Happy 6/9!” and posing on his balcony for pictures like a prince lording over his kingdom.Standing tall in stall No. 6, Gronkowski (the human) shakes his head back and forth and sighs, flapping his lips the way a horse does. “Is this the noise a horse makes?”“Wow—did you see Justify’s ass?” Big G says, in genuine appreciation of the magnificent Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner. “It’s huge!”A group of what must be Jets fans catches sight of Gronk heading down the tunnel and yell, “SECOND SUCKS!”

The Chicago Bears have agreed to terms with first-round pick Roquan Smith, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The deal is for the slotted amount of $18 million guaranteed over four years. A source told Schefter the contract should include about $11 million in bonuses.Selected with the eighth overall pick in the draft, Smith had been the last unsigned rookie in the NFL. Part of the reason for his holdout has been language in his contract that would allow the team to reclaim guaranteed money if the linebacker is suspended under the NFL's new helmet-contact rules, a source previously confirmed to ESPN.

He could count on having an empty seat next to him on any team flight, due to his ritual of watching hardcore pornography on his portable DVD player, according to those sources. On one occasion, an equipment manager tasked with delivering gear to lockers after hours walked in on Winslow masturbating at his locker, two seats away from the entrance, according to two team officials familiar with the incident.
When pornography became widely available on mobile phones, he often watched it on his smartphone during meetings, the two former teammates said (nowadays, such sites would typically be blocked by the building WiFi). Teammates begged out of shared hotel room assignments with Winslow because he watched pornography and masturbated openly, with no regard for who was in the room, a teammate and an official said.
Later on in his career, after being sent to Tampa Bay via trade, Winslow acquired a life-sized silicone mold of a woman’s torso—complete with vagina and anus—to bring with him on road trips, according to one former assistant coach.

I tend to believe that almost anyone who plays in the NFL is 100% committed to the sport so I'm guessing this really was the only option for him. Poor guy, hope he got paid and gets to pursue his other dreams now. Funny to think the NFL's 'talent drain' problem first seemed to come to light around the time when Luck & RG3 got drafted, when the word was "finally we are going to have some great young QBs again"...this is pretty much the worst possible scenario for the NFL

I'm guessing Alex Smith is pretty much done, not coming back? I have not heard any discussion of him coming back from the broken leg or if he had hung them up.
Got looking at some passing career passing stats of Fitzmagic and went onto Smiths' football reference page. Smiths' career record is 94-66-1, which is pretty good considering every coach was near replacing him each season he played.

Kinda curious to see how long Cam Newton stays out there. Got to figure if healthy, he's got to be better than some of the guys already signed. Then again, he might be one of those players that everyone knows that is as much a headache as talented.
I'd kinda think if NE could switch over to a run first control the clock offense, Newton at least in skills could be a good guy to run that offense. Honestly he probably would have made more sense style wise to push or beat out Trubisky in Chicago compared to Foles, who I think is a bit more fools gold.
