i am proud of my team. it's early, but they are once again showing signs of championship heart.

plus they clowned dallas twice in eight days.

I still love the Lakers. But I hate myself for loving the Lakers.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 18:38 (eighteen years ago) link

i really don't love this configuration of the team. i think it's mitch kupchak i have a problem with. i have no beef with kobe as a sidekick but i have a serious love-hate relationship with him. i enjoy watching him play, even when he plays like an ass trying to be mj and ballhogging like crazy, and i think he sounds insane half the time off the court.

metonymus prime (rgeary), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:21 (eighteen years ago) link

i mean seriously, there's some nbdl-level garbage on the roster. if this team were in washington, say, and kobe were swapped out for the average "superstar" like steve francis, they'd be 7-13 or so

Jesus. 81 points??? Seriously?? It only took Kobe 46 shots + 20 free throws. That's one crazy boxscore. I admire the 2 assists though.

Holy shucking fit.
Also, please note: the Lakers are a joke.
Kobe had 81, but THE ENTIRE REST OF THE TEAM combined for 16 assists and 38 points. I don't know what Kobe's playing out there, but it doesn't sound like basketball.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 23 January 2006 15:58 (eighteen years ago) link

When you have one guy take 48 shots, tho, that doesn't give anyone else a chance to do anything.

Maybe Kobe's playing NBA Jam. Anyone check his flame trail?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:04 (eighteen years ago) link

16 assists = 32 points more or less
81-32 = 49 points that Kobe apparently made without any help from the rest of the team.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually it is 31 because of the 18 foul shots, but yeah.

is because Odom is past his prime yet still overrated

J. Lamphere (WatchMeJumpStart), Monday, 23 January 2006 17:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 23 January 2006 17:37 (eighteen years ago) link

The Pau-powered Grizzles have been playing some stupid games lately - they were playing Chuck & Duck w/ the Warriors last week (I think), and put up 130+!

God damn me, I'm kinda liking the Lakers this year. 2 dudes on my fantasy team (Kobe & Kwame) + TV announcers that don't sound like Hawk Harrelson homers (CHICAGO BULLS I'm looking right @ you stupid asses) + WTF assistance from Farmar Superstar (copyright G. Cosloy) & SMUSH + the triangle in all its glory = FUN!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 22:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I still don't get why announcers rooting for their team is a bad thing.

Chesty Joe Morgan (Chesty Joe Morgan), Thursday, 11 January 2007 00:57 (seventeen years ago) link

It doesn't have to be! However, whenever I've come across it (most notably during ChiSox / Bulls games), this rampant boosterism is there in place of everything else. At least leaven the yay-rah-rah crap w/ some actual observations or analysis that's semi-impartial, or at least feign some interest in what the other team's doing.

I watched this Lakers / Bulls game a few weeks ago, and it was the perfect example of what NOT to do. The announcers were actually telling Kobe to sit down after he fouled out! And when they weren't doing that, they were waxing Michael Jordan's pole, because IN NO WAY is Kobe one-fiftieth the player MJ was, so let's spend 6 straight possessions belaboring that point. (I want to say Stacey King was the one that couldn't shut up, because LOL @ Stacey King.)

The Celtics announcers are total homers (I mean, god, Tom Heinsohn is King Homer), but Tommy can also make a good point once in a while, and Mike Gorman's the perfect semi-impartial, totally-professional foil for him. Joel Meyers (sic?), the Lakers broadcaster, is totally pro-Lakers, but he doesn't turn every LA contest into a "GOOD GUYS WIN" sort of dick-off.

You can support the team you work for w/out painting your face and yelling DEFENSE into the microphone. Even disregarding that these formerly regional broadcasts are now available nationwide, it'd behoove these shitwits to maybe think of the local viewership audience that'd like to watch a basketball game & not a pep rally.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 11 January 2007 15:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I hated King at the beginning, but he's grown on me a lot. I'm actually surprised you named his as an example here, cause he's the one out of the three who provides any sort of game analysis, and that's about all he does. Kerr is useless at this point, but no one is going to tell him he can't broadcast if he still wants to, and I'm ok with that.
(btw they were telling Kobe to sit down cause he was wagging his finger at the ref. If a Bull did that, they'd make a similar comment, except that a Bull would NEVER do that. ok, maybe Wallace, but he doesn't count)

Chesty Joe Morgan (Chesty Joe Morgan), Friday, 12 January 2007 20:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm with you on the Hawk/DJ thing, though. Makes the games nearly unwatchable.

Chesty Joe Morgan (Chesty Joe Morgan), Friday, 12 January 2007 20:47 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah joel stein (is that his name?), the lakers play by play, is a mild homer but he definitely knows the game and gives credit to good play by the opposition. he gets pumped for good lakers plays but he'll give it up for the visitor.

the lakers "horrible d" looked pretty good last night. the spurs missed a ton of shots because they weren't getting open looks--the lakers were rotating off screens and getting somebody in bowen's/ginobli's/barry's face every time they spotted up. it was great defense! what game were you watching? the lakers haven't had their second best player in a month and they're half a game behind san antonio for third best record in the league.

The Spurs have been really average after the return to the leather ball. That doesn't excuse it or anything cos obviously everyone is using the same ball, but Barry was shooting lights out before the switch and has really fallen off since the switch. Also, for some reason, the injury to Francisco Elson has fucked with their rotation. Don't ask me how.

Brown won't be prosecuted in cake heist
Associated Press

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. -- A man walking down the street at bar-closing time with a $190 cake in his arms claimed Los Angeles Lakers center Kwame Brown swiped his birthday treat.

But authorities said the cake caper won't be prosecuted.

In a police report, Alexander Martinez said he left his 30th birthday celebration at the Shore Restaurant and Lounge at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday with the uneaten 2-by-2-foot cake and walked north toward the Blue 32 nightclub.

Martinez told police he first came upon Lakers forward Ronny Turiaf, who he said agreed to pose for a photograph with him and the chocolate cake.

But outside of Blue 32, the 6-foot-11, 270-pound Brown came along, grabbed the cake and threw it at Martinez, according to the report. Brown got into a white limousine and left, Martinez claimed in the report, although he didn't suggest any reason for the cake toss.

Martinez reported that he then walked up to Lamar Odom as the Lakers forward left Pedone's Pizza and confronted him about the cake, which was splattered on the birthday man's back.

A man believed to be Odom's bodyguard pushed Martinez into the street, yelling at him to get away from Odom, the police report said.

"Calm down, he didn't do anything," Odom told the man believed to be his bodyguard, the report said.

Everyone then went their separate ways and Martinez filed a police report 12 hours later.

Detectives presented a possible "grand theft of a person" case to the city attorney's office, which decided not to prosecute.

Brown wasn't talking, but Lakers spokesman John Black said the team was aware of the alleged incident and had been told prosecutors were not filing charges. Black had no other comment.

The Lakers are on a three-game road trip through Saturday.

Brown, averaging 8.7 points and 6.6 rebounds, has been sidelined since spraining his right ankle on Dec. 31. He is expected back in about two weeks.

gasonned:

In case the Lakers' startling lack of effort wasn't enough, the night took another turn when Jackson approached a handful of reporters who had been interviewing Gasol after the game.

"You guys done with Pau?" Jackson asked. He then turned to Gasol. "Pau, I want you to meet a friend of mine."

Jackson walked Gasol into an adjacent room and introduced him to Charles Oakley, a fierce power forward in his day and a player Jackson coached on the Chicago Bulls in the 1980s.

Oakley, his hair now flecked with gray, was later asked by a reporter if he gave Gasol some strong advice.

"Always," he said, smiling.

The Lakers are 0-2 on their three-game trip. They haven't lost three consecutive games since acquiring Gasol in February 2008.

they want a fapz (tremendoid), Sunday, 7 March 2010 02:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Asked whether Garnett looked healthy, Gasol said, "I don't know exactly what's going on with him. He's struggling. I think he's physically limited. But that's all I see. All I heard. He competes. He's still a competitor, but I feel like he's limited; otherwise, he'd be contributing a lot more."

...one month later...

"I really don't like to talk about that aspect of a person's game ... other than the fact that he's been weak and sickly," coach Phil Jackson said before the Lakers played the Bobcats on Friday, setting up the delivery of the jab with a pregnant pause. When asked to clarify, Jackson said that Gasol has been feeling "under the weather" and he will have to monitor his 7-foot power forward's playing time.

Look at their current roster and check out how much each player is making, every player is getting paid at least a million except for two who are at $972,000 then go look at the okc thunder salary and compare. a team with great players and make it into the playoffs and their star player doesn't even get paid $5 million a year. still think he's underrated, even tho he maybe overrates himself. certain situations he was the only one besides kobes i counted on to throw himself at the defense to make things happen. his love for taking it to to the celtics didnt go unnoticed either, can't find it but he quietly made probably my favorite recent play against them, in boston, last year that swung the game imo. good luck, dont get murdered!

Farmar strikes me as an enthusiastic defender, without being outstanding at defense, an opportunistic scorer, without being outstanding at offense, and a player who often sees the wrinkles to exploit in the transition game. Iow, he hasn't developed the skills of a starter, but is a pretty good role player. We'll see if he can convert to a starter role.

xp thats a better way of putting it; he's still a very straight line player, ok while he has the luxury of speed but he's probably shirked the probing/hesitation etc. that players, esp. players his size usually need in their arsenal to make an impact beyond their first few years (and he has a point, despite himself, in that the triangle, esp. with the players he's played with, can hide a pg and allow one to underdevelop those skills in-game)

Fisher Explains Late Burst in Sacramento

Obviously, the stakes were just a bit different between Derek Fisher’s key seven-point scoring streak from Wednesday’s early-season road win in Sacramento and his absolutely critical 11-point scoring stretch in Game 3 of the NBA Finals last June.

But there were similarities worthy of comparison, born out of a combination of the defense overreacting to Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, and Fisher’s confidence/experience/moxy in key situations.

Here’s the play-by-play from last night:

4:09 Fisher grabs a defensive rebound, pushes in transition and draws a foul, converting 1-of-2 free throws to put L.A. up 99-90.
3:35 Fisher drains an open three-pointer, L.A.’s first field goal make since the 7:43 mark, their offense stalled with Sacramento overplaying Gasol and Bryant.
3:17 Fisher strips Carl Landry at the other end and races down to convert an and-1 layup, essentially putting the game out of reach for good at 105-92.

Fisher offered some explanatory thoughts on Wednesday at the team’s practice facility:

I think it’s the recognition of how we’re being defended as well as stepping into those opportunities. From the beginning of the game to the end, if the other team has any smarts they’re going to overplay Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol. That’s just the reality of it. From my position and really anybody on our team, you just have to find that balance between playing your game and taking your shots and opportunities but also recognizing who we’re playing against. You play against a team like Sacramento who wants to score in transition, maybe you don’t take some of those shots that you normally take. You play against a team like Portland, who we’re going to play on Sunday, they play really good half court defense so maybe you want to take some good early transition shots. It’s that combination of things that takes place, and last night I was able to get couple that I guess were timely for us.

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 9 May 2011 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

Man, the WAY they went out = Lakers brand badly tarnished for a good while. Seriously I'll bet the Bynum and Odom fouls cost them some serious trading leverage.

lol kareem is such a douche:

There are five statues outside the arena recognizing Magic Johnson, Jerry West, Chick Hearn, Wayne Gretzky and Oscar De La Hoya. Abdul-Jabbar believes it's high time the Lakers do the right thing and make him the sixth athlete so honored.

"I don't understand (it). It's either an oversight or they're taking me for granted," Abdul-Jabbar told The Sporting News in a recent interview. "I'm not going to try to read people's minds, but it doesn't make me happy. It's definitely a slight. I feel slighted."

The six-time NBA MVP sounded even more offended in a statement released subsequently by his business manager.

"I am highly offended by the total lack of acknowledgement of my contribution to Laker success," Abdul-Jabbar was quoted as saying. "I guess being the lynchpin for five world championships is not considered significant enough in terms of being part of Laker history."

He's got a legitimate point, sure, but being "highly offended" is just a sign of not having enough to keep him busy.

Aimless, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

uh oh kobels too old for microfracture, thats like saying 'hes too fat for gastric bypass but no worries everythings cool'

Laker trainer Gary Vitti tells Lakers.com's Mike Trudell about Kobe Bryant's right knee, which sounds like it's due for a busy offseason: "His is an articulating cartilage problem. The way I describe that to people is that if you look at the end of chicken bone where it’s nice and white, well, that’s not bone, it’s cartilage. Sort of like a Teflon surface that when two bones come together, that cartilage is there so that bones don’t rub on each other. Now, the fact that it’s nice and white tells you it doesn’t have a good blood flow to it, and that means it cannot heal or regenerate. So, over time, as that cartilage wears away, you end up with osteoarthritis. Kobe doesn’t have an arthritic knee, but he has a knee that has some joint degeneration to it. His issues and his age are such that it eliminates some procedures, like microfracture and that type of things. But he is a candidate for certain other things, and we know all the procedures all around the world that are available to him, and the appropriate decisions will be made, he’ll have the best care."
