Spottie, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 17:01 (six years ago) link

I had to decide between dubs in 5 or in 6. I went conservative and voted 6. Finals Bron is formidable, but not invincible, as has been proved more than once in the past.

cavs in 7

marcos, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 17:02 (six years ago) link

gonna post this here so everyone has to read it when they open the thread

my fav outcome of this series wld be cavs winning via bron having the greatest finals performance ever, not cause im really rooting for the them just cause i wld like to see something like that, and it wld be cool to see the dubs lose after adding kd, i do not think thats whatll happen, i think the dubs will win in 5

bron v kd matchup will be very interesting and crucial, both teams will try to not have them guard each other but in the crunch time there will be no choice

lag∞n, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 17:03 (six years ago) link

remember when harrison barnes went 3-95 games 5-7. he's been swapped for KD. no rest for lebron.

also k love has looked as good as ever leading up to the finals but the warriors matchup has not been good for him.

Spottie, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 17:08 (six years ago) link

Cavs should have Kyrie back on defense to help out, might be a nice change of pace for him.

marcos, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 17:26 (six years ago) link

in that same regard both teams have totally coasted up til now which is weird and adds an element of instability, like u cld see the dubs kinda freaking out when the spurs were torching them before they intentionally injured kawhi

don't worry I'm a homer though I do think cavs chances are higher than most people are giving them credit for

marcos, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 18:06 (six years ago) link

what are the odds rn? i would give the cavs at least 40% chance to win

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 18:12 (six years ago) link

dont forget friends, betting on sports is dumb for making money

― lag∞n, Tuesday, May 30, 2017 2:14 PM (four seconds ago)

def, but every once in a while there's obvious money to be made. finals 2 years ago was pretty easy money for anyone paying attention.

70/30 seems like a very fair price, even if i think the warriors should probably be stronger favorites. don't think it's attractive enough to bet

k3vin k., Tuesday, 30 May 2017 18:18 (six years ago) link

90/10 is pretty far out but dont think anyones giving those odds, wonder what it was for that year the lakers beat the nets, had to have been one of the most lopsided matchups ever

lag∞n, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 18:18 (six years ago) link

538 is probably over-weighting the Cav's regular season after the ASB.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 30 May 2017 18:19 (six years ago) link

havent read the 538 thing but that's probably right

k3vin k., Tuesday, 30 May 2017 18:20 (six years ago) link

yeah I'd take 70/30 for sure, but my book doesn't have a price on the series yet, lol

that said I do get a little suspicious of projection systems when they're dealing with superteams like this.

frogbs, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 18:21 (six years ago) link

main thing that 538 model doesn't account for iirc is ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ playoff lebron ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

marcos, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 18:24 (six years ago) link

more or less

marcos, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 18:24 (six years ago) link

i recall nate silver saying is ELO model or whatever doesn't really treat playoff basketball as different from regular season

marcos, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 18:25 (six years ago) link

i very rarely bet sports, i think the last time i did was the finals 2 years ago. i just like thinking about it

NBA finals are kind of an interesting betting phenomenon tho, if you're a reasonably discerning and plugged-in fan there can probably be money to be made. combination of the better team usually wins + lots of media attention/terrible opinions by stephen a smith probably cause people to bet on the cavs when they shouldnt, making the warriors odds better

warriors odds are probably as good as they're gonna get because most books probably got a lot of money on the dubs last summer after KD signed

k3vin k., Tuesday, 30 May 2017 18:25 (six years ago) link

Spottie, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 18:52 (six years ago) link

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 19:00 (six years ago) link

these are the kinds of little things that don't show up in the box score but add so much value to the team. our understanding of defense is so elementary because we can't easily quantify things like how often a guy switches to a higher-percentage defensive play compared to the average defender. shows up in plus-minus stats tho

yeah this is a good point, they do a ton of switching but not because they don't care about matchups or think their guys can all guard 1-4. and draymond may be able to guard 1-5 but more of his value may come from knowing the correct secondary switch, which seems like a really hard thing to consistently get right.

these guys have ridiculous work ethic and drive. none of these guys need to lift a finger for the rest of their lives

this is the thing that i think most ppl miss -- especially with black players, of course. being a world-class athlete requires psychotic drive and commitment. manny ramirez has this rep of being completely half-assed but no one (except for maybe tony gwynn) worked harder at video/bp/preparation. the training that top tennis players do, with the diets and the oxygen chambers, is ridiculous

there are lots of dudes like lavar ball who think that if the breaks had gone differently they could have been players. and yeah some guys got by on height or being lefty or whatever, but the superstars are just insanely competitive, and they will not quit until they're forced to

most of my extended family lives in Akron. my grandma lives like a half-mile from his house. she would go on and on about how much he was doing for the community, apparently he pours a lot of money into local schools and charities. when he was in Miami she said "I'm really sad he's gone but he's still a wonderful young man". that televised "The Decision" thing was a monumental dick move on his part, but he seems to have learned from it. his being caught on camera mocking dirk during the finals against the mavs was also a dick move, but he seems to have learned from that, too. he's grown up slowly, but he does make progress.

I think part of the resentment towards Lebron comes from the fact that he's bewn The Anointed One since high school, so when he couldn't win a title in 6 years it gave a lot of people a reason to yell "OVERRATED!!" at him.

I'm not blaming him, he's obvs in ridic physical condition; it's more a note that the tactic to play at a breakneck pace ain't gonna work
Warriors had twenty turnovers, Bron had a triple double, the Cavs had 86 points in the third quarter, the bench scoring for both teams was about even.... and it was STILL a blowout.

Yeah this is incredible by both of them, lebron only error was overcomitting a bit to contesting a possible step back 3 after steph opened up one step worth of space, curry was just faster to bail on that and drive instead and lebron correctly played for the block from behind instead of pushing up and probably fouling since he was beat. zaza playing 13mins last night is more the problem, theres no one for tristan to guard, putting him on dray and and having him sag back into the paint has some appeal theoretically but it hasnt worked so far

lag∞n, Monday, 5 June 2017 19:48 (six years ago) link

btw dray has been in foul trouble both games and it hasnt really mattered cause the dubs r just scoring so many points, doesnt seem like he affecting the series that much defensively anyway, kinda a weird first couple games in a the warriors are breaking basketball sort of way

btw ive rewatched the play from a number of angles at different speeds and in the interest of balance i will say fouls cldve been called on bron at least twice but... the double dribble was def not imperceptible particularly not up close from brons angle as it impeded the path of the ball

, Monday, 5 June 2017 20:53 (six years ago) link

steph does that pump fake all the time and doesn't place his hand on the ball, which is what bron was reacting to, his movement toward steph that allowed steph to get by him had already been made

i can live with not calling the occasional double dribble. the hill that i will die on is refs not calling self (which i acknowledge is just a more advanced double dribble)

, Monday, 5 June 2017 21:11 (six years ago) link

the rule that i pay attention to the most that needs to be eliminated is the charge bcuz it makes for bad basketball, as opposed to overlooking a double dribble which makes for great basketball

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 June 2017 21:24 (six years ago) link

if you eliminate the charge, you could never switch a smaller man onto a larger man, bcz the big would just knock the little guy straight onto his ass and roll to the basket unguarded.

lag∞n, Monday, 5 June 2017 23:53 (six years ago) link

The worst most bullshity version of that is when the guy on offense makes a pass prior to the "charge" yet they still call a charge

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 6 June 2017 01:12 (six years ago) link

obv offensive players could still be called for fouls if the defender is playing active defense and gets in front of the ball handler. i'm talking about charges where the defender makes no play on the ball handler except to stand still in front of him to draw a charge.

they've both been incredible. what people always discount is turnovers. durant has had six in 3 games. lebron has had 17

k3vin k., Thursday, 8 June 2017 04:48 (six years ago) link

those turnovers explain probably 20% of the difference in this series

k3vin k., Thursday, 8 June 2017 04:49 (six years ago) link

J0rdan S., Thursday, 8 June 2017 04:52 (six years ago) link

J0rdan S., Thursday, 8 June 2017 04:53 (six years ago) link

you can argyle they're a necessary part of his game but i think his ceiling his lowered by that. like those 17 possessions mattered

k3vin k., Thursday, 8 June 2017 04:53 (six years ago) link

i don't think it's a necessary part of his game just that vs this team he has to try and make plays. he's in an unenviable situation.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 8 June 2017 04:54 (six years ago) link

to me, the most dominant basketball games i've ever seen played by one player is lebron in the final two games of last year's finals. durant is not at that level this year, but he's gotten close when you take into account his length on defense and his ease of scoring on offense, and it's been more than enough in this particular series.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 8 June 2017 04:56 (six years ago) link

i am not sure we are disagreeing, durant has clearly been the best

that 04 pistons team wouldn't have even beaten the lakers that year if LA hadn't been coming apart at the seams psychologically

Clay, Friday, 9 June 2017 20:56 (six years ago) link

The Golden State Warriors are the best NBA team of all time. So naturally, ex-NBA guys are popping up everywhere to claim that they—unlike the Cavaliers, featuring three superstars including one of the two greatest NBA players ever—could have beaten the Warriors.

Magic Johnson says the Showtime Lakers totally would have swept Golden State. Rasheed Wallace and Rip Hamilton agree: The 2004 Pistons would have won. Julius Erving says the ‘83 Sixers would’ve beaten the Warriors. If you hear former champs tell it, these Warriors will apparently the worst title team of all time.

Steve Kerr has heard it, and he totally agrees.

“They’re all right, they would kill us. The game gets worse as time goes on. Players are less talented than they used to be. The guys in the ‘50s would’ve destroyed everybody. It’s weird how human evolution...goes in reverse in sports. Players get weaker, smaller, less skilled. I can’t explain it.”

feel like that can work maybe as a last minute out-of-timeout play, but after enough repetition it won't be effective bc teams will just be like "ok theyre running the kiss set, keep your eyes on the ball"

so eventually youd have to up the ante to distract the other team, like frenching or dick stroking or doing the "suck it" gesture from wwe's DX over and over again until you dislocate a shoulder.

anyway i think the 'KD ruined the NBA' takes are overblown, this season was kind of like a perfect storm, how often are you going to have a two-time MVP on the books for $12 million a year at the same time the cap jumps from 70 million to 94 million + a top 3 player in the world enters free agency. im glad it happened and we all saw it tbqh. i also dont think enough credit can be given to kerr to take essentially the same team that mark jackson had and to turn it into a dynasty.

i think it'll even itself out in next few years, dubs will lose livingston and maybe iguodala, they'll probably start getting injured too, bron, kyrie and paul george will join kawhi and lamarcus on the spurs to form a superteam, all will be well again

, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 15:03 (six years ago) link

ya prob tho they cld easily sweep the finals for the next 3 years too

lag∞n, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 15:14 (six years ago) link

gotta see how they come out of the offseason and how they sign, also they've been v lucky with injuries past three years, also *whispering* curry looked like he's lost half a step and cld see him deteriorating over the course of next couple of years but also having the system they have will help mask that

durant's ring-chasing is obv not unprecedented and on a personal level i am happy for him, he seems like a good dude unlike spoiled nba brats curry and thompson (j/k really) but what makes it corny imo was less him joining a 73-win team and more that OKC was up 3-1 in the wcf and instead of resolving to beat them the following year he decided it was too much work

marcos, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 16:20 (six years ago) link

i feel that but also "i'm tired of playing w/ this other really awesome player who wants the ball all the time" is a tale about as old as ring chasing

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 June 2017 16:21 (six years ago) link

, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 16:26 (six years ago) link

cavs were a dumpster fire franchise before he came back.

im not bad at kevin durant exercising his rights as a free agent. but joining a 73-win team that was minutes away from back-to-back titles with a reigning back-to-back mvp and two other all-stars is substantively different than the heat or cavs situations.

w/durant the supposed mercenary aspect puts people off, which was the exact same deal w/lebron and bosh going to the heat. i think the diff is that to anyone outside their fan base curry, green, & thompson aren't really a likable bunch of dudes. and after awhile it seemed like people stopped caring about painting the heat as villains, maybe bc inherently those guys were more likable?

none of these guys are as bad as derek fisher using his kid's illness as a way to hunt for fresh championships iirc.

i think it's still p incredible that kerr took a lackluster underperforming team and turned them into a 73 win behemoth without any major acquisitions, really. that's the underreported story in all this. i love that mark jackson has had to announce all three of their finals runs

yeah that warms my heart

eh maybe, the difference is that the Heat were likely a .500 team without Lebron and Bosh. it wasn't like they decided to join forces with the best team in the league (which was the Cavs, lol), much less a historically great one like last year's Warriors.

frogbs, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 16:35 (six years ago) link

durant's ring-chasing is obv not unprecedented and on a personal level i am happy for him, he seems like a good dude unlike spoiled nba brats curry and thompson (j/k really) but what makes it corny imo was less him joining a 73-win team and more that OKC was up 3-1 in the wcf and instead of resolving to beat them the following year he decided it was too much work

i mean this is exactly the take i'm talking about lol. old-fashioned macho BS that i expect from stephen a smith, not ILH

k3vin k., Tuesday, 13 June 2017 16:38 (six years ago) link

there are decent reasons to hate the warriors (the flopping/complaining/faux-bad boy image, the whole making the league less fun thing) but attacking durant's move as some sort of moral weakness or failing is kind of lame

k3vin k., Tuesday, 13 June 2017 16:40 (six years ago) link

like can anyone honestly look at the way westbrook plays in the playoffs vs the way KD plays with the warriors and blame him for leaving that situation? why does he have to try the same thing every year for his entire career if the chances of it being successful are so low?

k3vin k., Tuesday, 13 June 2017 16:41 (six years ago) link

i dont blame kd for leaving! i wanted him to leave! to the celtics or spurs or someplace else besides the team that needed him least.

nice cage (m bison), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 16:42 (six years ago) link

free agents typically want to go to good teams, i mean of course durant had that ring hunger so he'd want to go to the team that gave him the best chance at winning. the difference is really just about likability and i guess narrative, bc no one likes the OG warriors core trio and no one really was wishing and hoping to see these guys finally win another ring after last year's tragic setback.

idk I think you can hold that view as a basketball fan who thinks (as I do) that the NBA playoffs are the single greatest event in pro sports. as much as I can appreciate watching what is probably the greatest team of all time it takes all the drama out of the playoffs and quite frankly I don't think "historically great team adds Kevin Durant" is a particularly great storyline

that said I don't think less of Durant for doing it, especially after they let Harden walk. I just think its a good argument for why judging players solely on how many rings they won is dumb. which y'all knew already.

tbh all the arguments that 'this was unprecedented' feel as old and bad as the baseball 'we can't change the rules or anything else because it's BASEBALL' arguments. everybody in sports does whatever they can get away with and oftentimes more. there's no "elite player can't join the team with the best win record" rule. that's fake news

maybe that was some of it but i think all of the ecstatic happiness that team was conveying after coming out of nowhere and winning the title kinda curdled in the eyes of NBA fans and came off badly when they turned into a juggernaut.

well to be fair the reason why it's so unprecedented is because situations like this pretty much never come up, how many times is the consensus best team able to take on a max contract when a historically great player in their prime just happen to be up for free agency.

it's caused an odd degree of side-taking from ppl who can usually do better (and i'm not just talking about ilh). what happened was a function of the cap spike and little else.

I prefer the 1st Bulls 3peat! Younger MJ, Ho Grant, BJ, Pax, Levingston, Scott Williams, Craig Hodges, still felt like an underdog team. Or at least hadn't had the "dynasty" tag slapped on with it's presumption of inevitability.
