young rev fuckin with diablo ii in '10

The Reverend, Friday, 26 November 2010 10:10 (eight years ago) link

one year passes...

one of my colleagues told me recently that the game would be out on may 15th and i've been going back and forth about getting it. i spent a load of time (actually, far too much time) playing d2+lod so i dunno if i want to go down that hole again. also i've looked at the classes and they leave me kind of cold. still, just reading about this game being released soon makes me giddy. my main concern is that i only have a laptop and that the game might not run on it (and looking at the min specs for this game, i have no idea if my graphic card is suitable or not).

so, anyone on ilx looking forward to this, approx 4 yrs after talking about it ?

I'm kinda looking forward to it. but to be honest, i'm looking more forward to the Torchlight and Borderlands sequels coming out this year. Maybe even Grim Dawn, but that probably won't be out until next year.

In a similar boat, I'm not sure I even want to bother with D3, but if i have any friends who get it, I might get sucked in

Also, it's been so long since the announcement I might be getting a new Mac this year anyway, lol!

Nhex, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 16:54 (seven years ago) link

the comfy chair/big screen factor with console vs PC gaming is getting way out of proportion in how it biases me regarding what games i want to play. i reeeeally reeeeally want to play diablo 3, but ffs. sitting at the pc? seriously? draaaaag. when the day comes i am sure i will blackout for a few minutes and come around having bought it on steam, and that will force my hand i guess.

you mean through Blizzard's watchamacallit

Nhex, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 22:34 (seven years ago) link

I think what they're aiming for is that grinding is definitely possible but definitely optional. You play through on Normal level 1-30, Nightmare 30-50, Hell 50-60, and Inferno is all level 60 all the time, but you'll need to grind your gear from Hell Act V to be able to survive Inferno Act I, then grind gear from Inferno Act I to survive Inferno Act II... Apparently there's an internal Blizzard book open on how many months it will take for the first person to finish Inferno Act V.

So yeah, if you want to hit max level and declare yourself done, you definitely can, no eye-bleeding grinding to level 99 here.

i'm trying not to think about it

It kind of bothered me that Diablo II makes you play the same exact game on different difficulties just to get the highest levels, the best gear, and have the best character for multiplayer

I don't self-identify as a big-time gamer, but having said that I did play enough D2 to run up each character class to level 95+ before going cold turkey. I'm still in fear of what D3 will do to my time.

Reality Check Cashing Services (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 19 April 2012 23:30 (seven years ago) link

elvis i feel like we're in the same boat. not really a gamer as i played only two games hard : d2 & cs. but man did i play those games a lot. actually i think for the last 6 months i was playing d2, i wasnt really playing, i was just in it for the trading. i had a few irl friends who played too and i just became their trader.

Jibe, Friday, 20 April 2012 11:00 (seven years ago) link

It's not open until 12:00 PDT, which is about 8:00 in the UK?

To console myself, and because I'm working from home, I treated myself to reinstalling Torchlight, just to get down to level 5 with the one class I'd not played yet.

Two hours later, I'm wondering if maybe I should avoid Diablo III over the weekend, if I want to get anything at all done.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 20 April 2012 13:47 (seven years ago) link

Haha though just getting to the login screen and putzing about with options reminds me that Blizzard are really very good at what they do, there's a definite aesthetic at work, as high quality as Starcraft / WoW but very different.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 20 April 2012 15:25 (seven years ago) link

andrew : true, blizzard really are good at what they do
also i tried to click like a fool on login for a few seconds before realizing that the beta wasn't open yet. i can def say i am now stoked for the madness ! they are aboutto suck me in big time in this once again. also, it's been a very long time since i opened d2 but damn if this doesn't replicate the feel of the old one, just via that login screen.

beta is pretty good stuff. it's a formula, but it works. it works too damn well!

i can understand the usual hardcore griping about it being simplified (I bet this would play great with a controller - only six hotkeys needed!) but i don't see that as a problem at all

still not sure if i'm gonna invest my life in this, but i might be tipped over if i can find a decent deal on the game

my video card does not run this very well, btw, more impetus to replace this iMac...

also kinda shocked that battle.net doesn't have voice chat

boy, was that Dan Fielding hungry for some cake! (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 22 April 2012 00:42 (seven years ago) link

The good news is that they've still got it, the bad news is it's not 2000 any more and one-more-game oh-is-that-the-sunset sessions are, to put it fucking mildly, no longer a good match for my lifestyle.

But yeah, this is a really great game, while you're playing it. The faffing around with connecting to the server every time you want to run a single-player game is not so great (though I can totally see why they've done it), but the game is A-1.

The classes are all pretty simple to pick up, I love that any given playing experience is just six buttons, but you've got 3-4 skills for each of those buttons, and 4-5 runes to modify those skills... there will be some theorycrafting going on no doubt, but I'll also be able to pick what works well for me and play the game through at least twice.

I did dig the way that a new ability or a new rune for an old ability could really change your playstyle and/or your effectiveness. Also I'm curious how non-top-level PVP will work, if at all: "Hey there's a lvl 11 wizard let's tear his head off - oh no it's a lvl 12 wizard, run from the death machine!"

The demo's only really representative of the gameplay up to a point I suppose - the stuff where you're levelling through to the end boss is okay, but you'll continue going from there (about level 10?) rather than start grinding the boss again and again (because you can't get any further than him in the demo, and because the level cap is 13). Though I suppose practice with soul-destroying boss runs is also useful :)

I imagine the levelling will be tweaked in the finished product, as you're only supposed to hit level 30 at the end of your first run-through, which is the end of act IV. Or maybe they just want to get you up and running and a feel for the character as soon as possible.

I admit I never played much co-op in Diablo II, but I don't remember it being this awesome - the banners that teleport you to another player, the individual loot drops, the way that the quest progresses for all at the same time as one (and the way it'll confirm everyone is ready before teleporting you all together for an important set-piece). I can definitely see me levelling my 2nd to, er, 5th characters that way.

Also I got the authentic Diablo moment - after getting a few rares from various kills of the end boss, I got one just by knocking over an urn.

So yeah it was great, I.m glad I basically lost this weekend to it (argh it tells you how long you've been playing each of the characters - I'm over 20 hours in total lol @ me), and I'm also glad that I only buy games at £20 or less because I will need to Set Aside some time for this, and it eating my May would not be good.

Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 22 April 2012 20:42 (seven years ago) link

Just beat the Beta with the monk; i think this will be harder in the final version.

Also it's great at its ambience of course, and the Witch Doctor's Zombie Dogs are genuinely unsettling.

Also also I forgot to mention some of the really "FYI we are not a Diablo clone so we can mix things up as much as we want" decisions.

I really love that the talent trees have been replaced by the (much cooler) set up I was talking about, where you don't get the choice to click the '+' next to the skill that increases fire damage by 1% or the one that reduced the cost of fire spell by 1%, but instead every level you get 1-4 new skills or new versions of old skills, which you can use as one of your six buttons. Crucially this means that I don't have to go up five levels knowing that the points I get for these levels will go towards an ability that, in another five levels, I will replace with the one I want, and never think about again.

What I'm not so certain about, but which might be genius, is that they've taken away the twin panel, the stats. You can still see them on the character profile, but your choice of class determines how they go up each level. You can still affect them with gear and some passive skills, but that's it.

And from that comes not just no stat requirements on gear, but a complete lack of armor classes - almost everyone can wear almost everything, and the same piece of armor looks different on different classes. They can get away with this because with the Paladin gone, the heavy hitters are the monk and the barbarian, both of which start in leather, so everyone's armor upgrades from leather -> mail -> more platey, and you can maintain a cohesive look for the class.

Thhis

Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 22 April 2012 21:19 (seven years ago) link

Bah, ignore that bit at the end.

Just beat the Beta with the monk; i think this will be harder in the final version.

Yeah, definitely, the only time I died was when I was trying for the "kill a lot of enemies at the same time" achievement.

Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 22 April 2012 21:24 (seven years ago) link

Ha, cheers for reporting back, Andrew/forks. I ended up on a consolation Torchlight run-through this weekend instead, heh.

Blizzard tend to be pretty good with the polish/depth - sounds like D3 has that in spades. How is the music/SFX, out of curiosity? The town theme from the original Diablo still gets stuck in my head/mashed-up with John Fahey, etc.

etc, Monday, 23 April 2012 08:15 (seven years ago) link

How much is/was in the beta? I put in an hour or so back in September on an early build at a friend's (who worked for Blizzard). I was never a big Diablo fan, and I wonder how much market there's going be for this in a world where Skyrim exists, but that's just cos I don't know what I'm talking about!

CraigG, Monday, 23 April 2012 14:23 (seven years ago) link

It's all of Act I (of IV), I think.

The sound was pretty good, disturbing in places, doomy in places, lots of solid and possibly familiar sounds for "barrel shatters" - the sound of "fountain of gold sprays into the air and all over the floor" hit a deep comfortable spot.

I didn't notice the music, but then I generally don't.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 23 April 2012 14:42 (seven years ago) link

Music/SFX are spot fucking on; they kept most of the original voices and a number of sound elements including the WUBBLEWUBBLEWUBBLE sound of dropping a weapon to the ground and the "stay awhile and listen" dude which brought back insane nostalgia.
Beta was really short for my tastes. Beat it solo in about three hours maybe. Beat it in a mob in about 45 minutes.

boy, was that Dan Fielding hungry for some cake! (forksclovetofu), Monday, 23 April 2012 15:27 (seven years ago) link

Haha I felt like I was going to be castigated as a slacker when playing co-op because I tend to pick up everything that drops ever (while moldering piles of laundry haunt my floor), and then nip back to sell / disenchant it all.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 23 April 2012 15:47 (seven years ago) link

As long as you're the nice dude who offers things you don't need that seem semi-useful to others, that's cool.

mh, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:14 (seven years ago) link

really like the unique loot thing, btw - it's kind of a pain in the ass even if you're playing with friends, since everyone has to stop and divide up the loot, in pretty much every game of this type (be it Titan Quest or Borderlands). the way it is now, you only see loot you can pick up. I believe Torchlight 2 will have the same thing

PSOD (Ste), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 13:41 (seven years ago) link

I think they're going to probably have the long-term game better planned out this time. afaik Diablo 2 is still playable, and they kept adding more shit you could do in multiplayer. Like if you kill Super Uber Hell Nightmare Diablo and his brothers they each drop a unique amulet and if you and your friends each throw those out in the town square in a new game then Super Duper Uber Diablo with flames shooting out his ass shows up and you can kill him or something.

I agreed with a lot of this - IMO it's the same issue playing difficult NES and SNES games on an emulator, where you know you can just create a ton of save states and 'cheat' the game, which in turn makes the whole idea of playing it a lot less fun - you don't really feel like you 'beat' anything.

it made me wanna play diablo3 AND his game. The suggestion that a "number accumulator" isn't a game is ridiculous; I will buy D3 as farmville for hacknslash nerds though and own that. I love that he put up a number accumulator and his readers promptly played it to killscreen

Before you can say that you’re unhappy about something you bought not working, you have to make the parenthetical case that you’re above the whole fray, and it can work or not work, it’s all so droll; you can’t imply that any of it matters because that would mean you weren’t concerned with matters of global import. We need to think for a second about the extent to which this supposedly carefree fucking dialectic enables these precise abuses. Wizard ability - Archon. You get a death beam with no resource, area of effect explosion and area of effect force punch. 15 second effect, 2 minute cooldown. But... For every enemy you kill in the Archon form, you get a second of the effect back. Kill a big pack and you stay powered up for a long, long time. You can punk minibosses in Normal with just that and not much else.

mh, Saturday, 19 May 2012 05:00 (seven years ago) link

Depends what class you are. He's one of the few bosses I've only killed cooperatively.

But when you're a wizard it all comes down to shoot a lot and don't get hit. To kill Diablo, I had to give up my beloved Archon and go with mirror images so Diablo wouldn't eat my face off and I could put some death rays in him.

Other classes will find things to be completely different.

Weapons are very important for casters. Your spell damage factors off of your base weapon damage. Yes, that's counterintuitive, but that's how D3 works. If there's an axe with the right stats on it and good base damage, take that over the wand that "makes sense" for wizards because that's what they've always used.

apparently my old 7900gt can run this? d/ling now. my battletag is BLIFIL#1821.

adam, Sunday, 20 May 2012 01:10 (seven years ago) link

Playing a wizard, and nothing is more fun than Act III dungeons and just spraying my death ray in all directions and then picking up the loot. Like playing a Necro Summoner in D2, very easy on the mousing hand. I had to retool my skills to beat Belial... went from offensive/AOE skills over to defensive/single enemy targeting stuff. Got him in one try after I set up my skills properly. Then back to the death ray/wave of force for clearing rooms.

The writing in this is just pathetic though. Cliche after cliche, with overwraught, terrible dialog. I know, I know, video game writing, but I figured Blizzard would spend the money they clearly have getting good writers for this. Only Covetous Shen and the Scoundrel are any good at all.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 20 May 2012 01:45 (seven years ago) link

The Scoundrel gets the best lines. Shen is pretty good, too. Think he's voiced by David Hong, or someone trying very hard to sound like him. There's a couple moments where the Templar gets some good lines in, but those are few and far between.

I've found on bosses, I have to shift wizard over to fire and forget skills like hydra and blizzard. Hydra is superior because it's cheap and will actively target. I still use disintegrate, but have to dance around a lot. The big arcane orb spell might be better for mobility, but will take a *lot* longer to burn things down. Some bosses are conducive to Archon, but oftentimes I have to add another defensive skill into the mix to make it, unless it's stand and shoot like Azmodan.

Matt M., Sunday, 20 May 2012 02:12 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, in the credits James Hong is listed as the voice of Covetous Shen/David Lo Pan. I love that guy. Anyway, beat Diablo on normal this afternoon... took about 40 hours of play time. Meanwhile, in the same 40 hours, my friend has completed both normal and nightmare.

Beginning to suspect the auction house kind of ruins the must-keep-playing aspect of this game, since once you rack up some gold, it's trivial to go to the auction house and buy exactly what you want to create a godlike character. I'll wait until I spend some time in inferno mode though.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 21 May 2012 01:24 (seven years ago) link

I hear the game changes a lot in Hell and Inferno, and in ways that make me likely not to play much past Nightmare.

My suspicion is that Blizzard believes the surtaxes on real money exchanges at the auction house will be the cash-engine behind DIABLO 3, given that there isn't a monthly subscription fee (or other lucrative services such as transfers and faction switches and renames). I also believe that people won't be spending a lot of real-world money to trick out their characters for D3, for a variety of reasons. But what it really boils down to is that D3 isn't designed as an MMO and won't engender the same kind of attachment to player characters. I could be wrong, but I don't think that I am.

And big ups for hiring Mr. Hong (also the Eye Doctor in BLADE RUNNER) instead of a soundalike.

Matt M., Monday, 21 May 2012 01:50 (seven years ago) link

Apparently there's an internal Blizzard book open on how many months it will take for the first person to finish Inferno Act V.

― Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, April 18, 2012 6:11 PM (1 month ago)

Stupidly, they don't give you any if you buy the digital edition, only in physical boxes. But the digital edition is the same cost. :(

I was just too lazy to go to the store. Sorry.

mh if you are able to email one of them over at some point i would be super grateful. webmail or bobbyspirals at gmail dot com

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 14:17 (seven years ago) link

I'm guessing they put them in physical copies to give retailers a little bonus so they'd stock it. My understanding is that in a month or so everyone will be able to play the Starter version and you won't need a guest pass.

The stupid thing about the guest pass is you can't play co-op, which is the most brilliant thing they've got going.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 14:27 (seven years ago) link

You can luckily upgrade the guest pass account to a full one, though. My friend was on his wife's guest pass and upgraded and now we can all play happily together.

I did the cheesy thing yesterday where you skip some quests and finish an act with someone who's already done so, powering through the end of the second-to-last one and ended up beating Diablo with another friend. So now I'm on the second time through and getting exp again!

mh, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 14:32 (seven years ago) link

I did the upgrade thing.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 14:34 (seven years ago) link

I'm also not sure about the skills selection yet. It makes sense but is kind of odd in that you choose skills, but never lose the ability to switch to others in the long-term. I mean, in other Diablo games you could eventually play so long that you could max out pretty much everything, but this model of unlocking skills by level and then being able to swap them around is something I'm still getting used to.

Has anyone found a good case where it's useful to use a skill but not the highest-unlocked rune of it?

mh, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 14:40 (seven years ago) link

Huh, I thought it was 99 points (at life-draining lvl 99) but it took 20 points to max out each skill? Which lead to either "oh no this skill that looked good at level 10 is in fact rubbish but I have 10 points in it" or just going to the internet and picking one of the 3-4 working builds.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 14:52 (seven years ago) link

Eh, probably, it's been a while since I've played the first couple Diablos and I doubt I ever hit level 99

But, for what exactly? Playing the campaign again?

mh, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 15:20 (seven years ago) link

well, probably playing the campaign or co-op on a real difficulty level

I mean, I died by accident shortly after I hit level 10 because I'm still massively jet-lagged and was trying to make sure I wasn't going to be late for work and that was the only time I've even felt like I've been in danger, including the first boss fight.

that is a weird thing to bring up over lean cuisine (DJP), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 15:22 (seven years ago) link

I died like crazy in a few boss fights, but I would agree that the FEAR doesn't kick in as much with this game because you don't really lose all that much by dying. On the flip side, the frustration doesn't, either.

Anyone used the auction house yet? I threw a couple rare items on there for the hell of it, just to see if anyone actually bids. It'll be interesting to see how it works out when they open the cash version.

mh, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 16:32 (seven years ago) link

And by rare I mean "crap that popped out when I beat Diablo in Normal difficulty" so I'm not exactly fishing for huge gold prizes.

mh, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 16:32 (seven years ago) link

I've used the AH. I lowball. I really don't care, since it's not that much effort to get rares and the AH was completely, utterly stupid when I looked in on it the other day.

But have you played the secret level?

No, I can't get you there, but I might spend some time crafting the stuff that will.

I have to say that I LOATHE the new system of "Jump in to help a buddy and your progress gets boned." Came back to Act I NM after helping a friend and lost a half hour or more of progress. Not that it's a HUGE deal, I guess, but my game time is limited so taking steps backwards is unwelcome no matter how you slice it.

As for the normal being a tutorial, I've heard more than one person state "The game starts with Nightmare." Just like with WoW, the game really starts at max level (60, 70, 80, 85 depending on the version you were playing.)

And the Witchdoctor is giving me fits. He's really crippled for having only 4 skill slots at level 12 or whatever. Particularly when to make zombie dogs useful, you need a secondary skill and one of your passive skills set to boost them. It's like a more frustrating version of the Necromancer (my favorite D2 class by a mile.)

Matt M., Tuesday, 22 May 2012 16:38 (seven years ago) link

In Act I Nightmare now, and the unique packs are pretty much killing me instantly. Suspect my assumption that Normal mode provides no real idea of what the game is like is a correct one.

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 17:03 (seven years ago) link

Mainly that character builds and strategies that work in Normal will be totally ineffectual in Hell/Inferno difficulty. The assumption that the game is designed to chiefly be played in Normal mode, with the harder difficulties only for fanatics being incorrect; the game is really being designed to be played in groups in Hell/Inferno, and everything is tweaked to make that the most rewarding experience.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 17:11 (seven years ago) link

You can get through most of the first act as a wizard using whatever skills were mostly recently upgraded (runes granted). The thing is, that gives you a really messed-up set of skills that aren't all that complementary sometimes, and definitely doesn't help with any boss battles.

mh, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 17:35 (seven years ago) link

The stupid thing about D3 (and it was stupid about D2) is that the champion packs (blue titles) of monsters are often far harder/more annoying than the named bosses or minibosses. Spider Queen? No problem. Extra Strong Damage Reflecting Gibberbottom Pantsfiller and his pals? Makes me want to smash my keyboard into my monitor.

But I'm older now and have a lot less patience for it.

In normal, you could probably get by with just about any skills you wanted (assuming a couple defense and rest for blowing stuff up) and finish the game. Less so in Nightmare. Much less so in Hell, to the point where you have to take these skills if you want to get by (solo at least; group play is probably more forgiving.)

Matt M., Tuesday, 22 May 2012 17:39 (seven years ago) link

Is there a boss where the best wizard defensive skill isn't the one where you have fake copies of yourself? Seems like the best way to dodge getting damaged.

mh, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 17:54 (seven years ago) link

Mirror Image is pretty boss for bosses, specially if they just eat your Templar in two bites. Diamond Skin for OH SHIT moments (and for Prisms, which lets you disintegrate more.) Hydra and/or Blizzard for fire and forget damage.

It strikes me that they got rid of a lot of the things that would glitch the multiplayer experience or otherwise make it difficult. I don't think there are any quest-specific items that you pick up, loot now appears separately for each player so it doesn't have to do any checking between clients to see if it's been picked up yet, and the gem merging is now a town person when it appears. Also, you can remove gems from items! I don't think you ever could in D2, could you?

mh, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 21:54 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, it's like "Come, stay awhile and.. AHH, I'm dyiiiing!"

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 22:34 (seven years ago) link

No kidding. It also solves a lot of game lag and synchronization issues! I'd imagine there's still a lot of logic involving what monsters are alive/killed and the player's actions, but keeping track of a lot of the on-screen objects can now be ignored.

The fact that I haven't died yet should also tell you something about Hardcore mode: it's not that hardcore. Which is actually a wonderful discovery. This isn't Dark Souls or some roguelike, where punishment is inevitable. Instead, the only inevitability is fear and rigorous engagement of the player (which is to say, the best part of Dark Souls).

Why is Diablo III still a work in progress?

If you were one of the 6.5 million purchasers that made Diablo III the fastest-selling PC game of all time last week, you should know that Blizzard now admits the game you were playing was broken in some significant ways. I don't just mean broken in ways that prevent you from playing the game (though the company is still fixing many server and programming issues that continue to cause connection problems), but broken in ways that made certain character skills unintentionally powerful.

Blizzard has now posted a list of hotfixes that were applied to the game yesterday, and aside from a few obvious usability bugs, all of them significantly scale back the power of certain key class abilities. Basically, if you were using any of these abilities before the patch, you were unintentionally taking advantage of skills that made the game much easier than Blizzard apparently intended.

Take the Monk class's Boon of Protection rune, which let a player's party absorb a good deal of damage for ten seconds. Community Manager Bashiok admits on the forums that this ability "was approximately ten times over its budget on the benefits it provided" and has now been "nerfed to the point of obsolescence until we can implement a new rune in its place in a future patch.

"We don't intend to take these quick and drastic measures often, but considering the severity of the issue, we felt it important to correct it swiftly," he continued.

Players on the forums have been quick to complain that the newly downgraded abilities will make it practically impossible to beat the game on the highest difficulties, where the enemies are downright ferocious. I can't comment on the substance of those complaints, as I'm still slowly working my way through Normal difficulty and finding it almost insultingly easy for my Demon Hunter.

Pretty weak article. If there is one skill that makes it possible to beat the game more than any other, and people can't get through at a certain character level without using that one particular skill, then it stands to reason that the skill is broken.

mh, Thursday, 24 May 2012 15:06 (seven years ago) link

NEVER

Man, even with a healthy beta, it is hard to figure out how millions of people hammering the shit out of your game will break it in strange new ways.

mh, Thursday, 24 May 2012 15:19 (seven years ago) link

Not sure how healthy the beta can be when you can only do the first third/half of the first act and have NO IDEA how later-game mechanics will get worked. Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:13 (seven years ago) link

Blizzard accounts get hacked all the time; in my old WoW guild, four different officers (the guild leader, the raid leader, the main tank and our top healer) all got hacked and our guild bank was emptied. Blizzard was very good about restoring what was taken every time.

the auction house really makes annoying trade interactions and money probs go away. Need cash? Sell any rares you get at a fair bit below market price, but still 10x what the merchants would give, and someone will buy within hours!

johnathan lee riche$ (mayor jingleberries), Friday, 22 June 2012 18:45 (seven years ago) link

that is why playing with others is good -- you've probably collected enough gear, or could, to make a new character pretty good out of the gate so you just have someone at a higher level help you speed run the first act

bnw, Thursday, 28 June 2012 16:55 (seven years ago) link

I'm interested in how the dynamic works in Inferno difficulty -- basically your character has maxed out its level right before you get to it, so it's all about maintaining your build and not dying so you can get better gear.

mh, Thursday, 28 June 2012 16:57 (seven years ago) link

As opposed to my current status at the end of Hell difficulty, which appears to be dying constantly

mh, Thursday, 28 June 2012 16:57 (seven years ago) link

You have to be 60 to enter Inferno, I believe, and the difficulty of Inferno doesn't give you a lot of freedom to mess around with builds. It gets pretty cookie cutter from what I understand.

Basically, from what I can tell, the dynamic is that you get to Inferno and its difficulty functions as a "pay wall", like in a Facebook game (that you paid $60 for).

You have three choices: Buy gear from the Real Money Auction House, grind earlier acts with hopes to get good drops you can sell on the gold auction house so you can afford to buy upgrades, or you can try to completely ignore the auction house and run Hell Act 3/4 over and over again until you either get lucky and get the gear you need, or just get bored of the game and start playing the Civ V expansion pack. Right before I decided on the second part of option #3, I was grinding Act I and II inferno in order to get gear I could use to progress through the rest of Act II, and so on.

generally only play these co-op games tho, so only review i can rly give is the meaningless 'not as good as portal 2'. the levelling grind is p tedious, but the variety of combat (large groups, dungeon raiding, plus the Act III battle type stuff) is appealing. 1. I've got characters in all the classes, and the most fun to play is the dual-crossbow wielding witch doctor.

you should be able to change difficulty midgame. or if not, go out to the main menu and up it from there?

thomasintrouble, Thursday, 4 May 2017 09:35 (two years ago) link

nah you have to finish the game / start a new one to change the difficulty. i powered through it and now i'm playing adventure mode which is a++++. regular campaign on normal was way too easy - didn't die once. it was only in the final levels that i was even taking significant damage. so i ramped it up to hardcore now and i'm thinking i should probably make it harder once i finish my adventure playthrough.

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 24 September 2017 22:14 (two years ago) link

The main reason I like this game is because I normally play it while talking shit with friends; it's easy enough that you don't really need to concentrate on what you're doing but engaging enough that if you decide to actually play as opposed to stacking your primary stat and holding down the A button, you can do some ridiculous damage in a short amount of time.

Marcus Hiles Remains Steadfast About Planting Trees.jpg (DJP), Monday, 25 September 2017 13:36 (two years ago) link

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 25 September 2017 21:36 (two years ago) link

it's a completely different game than it was when originally released, can't really speak to the fresh from nothing experience. maybe some reviews of the game as-is are out there, but the release ones aren't for what you can play in 2017

playing the early part of the game is probably pretty easy, even on the harder difficulties

the actual game begins when you finish the plot and can either play in a group or solo in adventure mode. then it's either a fun grind similar to diablo 1/2 that gets insane if you want to do the highest difficulties and get the best gear, or kind of a fun scavenger hunt and challenge mode where you have to figure out what actually makes a character/build effective. not what gear to use, but what aspects of that gear you need to change (there's a ridiculous "re-roll" option where you enchant things and use resources to modify one aspect of an item) to make things work

mh, Monday, 25 September 2017 21:42 (two years ago) link

I guess what I'm saying is, if your character isn't level 60, you're still playing the intro? if you have the expansion it's level 70.

I picked it up a couple months ago again when they added the necromancer and it's kind of ridiculous how powerful people get in the seasons

(seasonal characters are this thing where you start fresh, there are a bunch of bonus things you can do, and at the end of the 'season' you can roll the character, gear, and experience points back to your main account)

mh, Monday, 25 September 2017 21:45 (two years ago) link

The post game is fun but you'd have to be much more enamored with the gameplay than I am to keep maxxing and outfitting different classes after the first [two maybe].

I’m enjoying this mess.

Blizzard going straight up Zynga was always the logical endpoint of their trajectory, glad they’re finally getting roasted for it.

circa1916, Sunday, 4 November 2018 08:32 (one year ago) link

i don't know, i haven't followed the trajectory of the company that closely but it doesn't seem like they deserve this much hatred for announcing the release of a mediocre mobile game. especially when diablo III ruled and they're working on multiple diablo-projects for the future, beyond this little mobile game.

https://kotaku.com/blizzard-says-it-wasnt-expecting-fans-to-be-this-angry-1830204721

i generally sympathize with people yelling at corporations about how they suck, but often videogame communities take things to a bizarre length that's pathetic, like they think they're citizens of a videogame country that owes them something

Karl Malone, Sunday, 4 November 2018 16:44 (one year ago) link

was pretty tone deaf of them to have it be the headlining announcement at blizzcon though, where people are expecting the announce of a new pc game

the whole f2p mobile game thing is tricky to navigate, on the one hand they do provide this different bite sized gaming experience that's nice for a lot of people, especially people outside the Core Gamer demographic, which makes pushback against these games look a bit like gatekeeping, but on the other hand they are often transparently cash grabby i.e. poorly made or IP reskins of existing games (i think this diablo one is basically a diablo reskin of a chinese mobile game that was already in development, not something made by blizzard in house) and have borderline predatory monetization schemes where the actual business strategy is to cast a wide net by being on this platform that everyone has access to and find the handful of people who will dump their entire disposable income into your game

ciderpress, Sunday, 4 November 2018 17:03 (one year ago) link

oh yeah, i mean f2p games are generally garbage, and i agree they're predatory. that's a problem that goes way beyond blizzard, though.

the reactions that i find pathetic are the people that feel betrayed by blizzard and are talking about boycotting. i mean, i really didn't like the direction that Westworld went in after the first handful of episodes, but i just stopped watching. i didn't try to organize a boycott. that's just weird.

generally i think that for some people it's going to be a slow process of adjusting to

it’s going to be really something to see gamers entering their mid to late 30s realize that they’re aging out of industry demographics and that fortnite, pokémon go and mobile games etc are where things are headed

— merritt k (@merrittk) November 4, 2018

Karl Malone, Sunday, 4 November 2018 17:33 (one year ago) link

for sure. as long as dad games make money they'll keep making them (and i will buy 2 to 3 each year, like the old 'i buy 12 CDs a year' marketing demographic).

i'm talking about the reaction of betrayal to games that are aimed more at the young whippersnappers

Karl Malone, Sunday, 4 November 2018 17:42 (one year ago) link

also mobile games aren't aimed at the younger generation, theres tons of older folks playing them on their commutes etc. i see middle aged ppl playing pokemon go at the train station like every week. a lot of the 'whales' are middle aged

ciderpress, Sunday, 4 November 2018 17:47 (one year ago) link

I read that mobile games like this are big in Asia, so isn't this latest reaction partly a cultural one?

droit au butt (Euler), Sunday, 4 November 2018 17:53 (one year ago) link

kinda. they're big in asia partly because more people there have public transit commutes rather than driving everywhere, partly just because there are more people there in general and theres less cultural pushback against these games as a 'lesser' form of gaming

ciderpress, Sunday, 4 November 2018 18:07 (one year ago) link

wow, yeah i just looked at some mobile gamer surveys and the 65+ crowd is huge.

anyway the only thing i wanted to say in this thread is that a reasonable reaction to a disappointing game announcement is...disappointment. not entitled anger, certainly not righteous betrayal. doesn't seem like that should be that controversial but i have always been out of step with whatever the "gamer" community is

Karl Malone, Sunday, 4 November 2018 18:11 (one year ago) link

FWIW I agree with you in principle, Karl. I think the gaming community is childishly entitled and they fundamentally don’t understand what goes into making a game and they generally have bad ideas.

But, y’know... maybe I’m OK with it in this instance?

circa1916, Sunday, 4 November 2018 18:50 (one year ago) link

hahaha, i mean i was pretty disappointed with the details of the mobile game too, especially because when it was first announced (several hours earlier) i was excited to try it!

maybe a good compromise is that everyone is allowed one total freakout about a gaming franchise, per year

why are all the people who hate the game angry that they can't play it on PC?

Karl Malone, Sunday, 4 November 2018 22:09 (one year ago) link

It's worth pointing out that Diablo stans* are generally found complaining about the low level of new shit in a game that they bought five years ago, with no subscription fee. They are, by and large, a whiny bunch of bastards, the absolute picture of people demanding a barter economy where what they bring to the counter is a big jingling bag of their loyalty.

was pretty tone deaf of them to have it be the headlining announcement at blizzcon though, where people are expecting the announce of a new pc game

Eh, they posted last week saying basically "We have a lot of stuff to show but no Diablo 4". A problem is that people knew that what they had on the go was Diablo on Switch, and Diablo 4, and something else - obviously Blizzard would have loved to have had D4 available, but instead it's this sad trombone.

*and I say this as someone who just finished the Season 15 'Journey'

Commanders, which seem like they'd be of some actual games usage:

Also announcers - they missed a trick by not having TotalBiscuit as the default announcer, with people having to pay to turn him off.

maybe the real problem is that people let themselves get attached to / invested in specific brands at a time when there are zillions of good games being made in every little genre. i can't think of many styles of gameplay that a single developer has monopolized, blizzard least of all

Why Diablo's Auction House Went Straight To Hell

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 5 November 2018 00:53 (one year ago) link

why are all the people who hate the game angry that they can't play it on PC?

When Diablo III first shipped, there were a lot of complaints that the control design (and by extension the skill trees, character customization, and how you level up) was dumbed down to accommodate console gamers who couldn't handle more than four buttons. I suspect the players who have spent serious cash on gaming PCs, maximizing frame rates, etc. just see gaming on a phone has being inherently inferior. See also: hardcore flight simulator or auto race players who make fun of anyone who don't have either a complete 737 or Porsche 917 in their gaming room.

I suspect that much of the backlash could have been sidestepped if Blizzard had just put up a slide that said "Diablo IV Coming Soon"

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 5 November 2018 01:17 (one year ago) link

yeah thats how bethesda did it when they announced the elder scrolls mobile game this summer and i didnt see any complaints really, just 'dont care's

ciderpress, Monday, 5 November 2018 01:19 (one year ago) link

Those are good article, ET, but not really what I was getting at (also lol the 'items are hard to come by' seems 100 years ago now, you get a set mailed to you once you hit level cap and prove you can tie your shoelaces)

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 5 November 2018 01:31 (one year ago) link

Weirdly I don't get the impression that the PC Master Race lot actually have a significant problem with the existing and massively successful console version of these games - but mobiles are a different matter because girls play on them for reasons we may never fully understand.

Likewise, I still play Diablo 3. My life is a mess.

Allen (etaeoe), Monday, 5 November 2018 23:02 (one year ago) link

Blizzard has been antagonistic to the Diablo fanbase for the past decade. I’d never voice this stuff outside of ILX because I don’t want anyone to confuse me with these people, but the following stuff is super annoying:

* Many of the systems that made Diablo 1 and 2 incredible were simplified for 3 to open up space for a number of systems that were both terrible in their conception and implementation. When these new systems were removed, the husk that remained is hilariously basic compared to Diablo 2.
* Blizzard promised a lot of content that never arrived (e.g. two expansion packs). They also keep “dropping hints” about stuff that never materializes like a druid class (or Diablo 4).
* The content that did land, like the Necromancer update, was super basic compared to expansions from Diablo 1 and 2.

Allen (etaeoe), Monday, 5 November 2018 23:09 (one year ago) link

I’ll also say that this was BlizzCon. It blows my mind that people pay to go to this bullshit (and I write this as someone who plays way too much Diablo, Hearthstone, and World of Warcraft). Apple really should’ve gotten into the “pay to watch a press conference” game.

Allen (etaeoe), Monday, 5 November 2018 23:13 (one year ago) link

goddamnit don't give them any ideas!

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 6 November 2018 00:41 (one year ago) link

I'd be interested in a bit more detail there, Allen. The only system off the top of my head that I remember them removing was the Auction House, which in retrospect was mystifying that they didn't see it becoming a disaster.

The only really complex system that I remember from Diablo 2 was the skill tree, which I thought was improved in every way for D3 (by tearing it out and setting it on fire).

Something that's kind of staggering to reflect on is the change in the game - if I recall correctly, when it released first it was just "here's the story, play the story, replay the story harder if you want", it wasn't until the first expansion pack that they got Kadala, Rifts, Bounties, Legendary Gems...

I totally agree that they aren't Game Design Wizards with a master plan, the amount of stuff where they rolled it out and then changed it is hilarious (the Realm of Trials that you had to go through to get your Rift Key for a start).

Which is part of the general shift over the course of D3 from "This is grindingly hard" to "this is a loot pinata, here is a set when you hit lvl 70" - the hardest part of my most recent season was the set dungeons, and that's partly because I was over-powerful for them - one of the Barbarian dungeons had "hit every elite with these three skills", and I had to take off some gems because the first two skills were killing them.

I think when we start getting into "Blizzard promised" we reach dangerous waters - Blizzard is pretty careful not to promise things, because they get hammered when they don't come through. Most of what they hoped for a second expansion ended up as free content (Kanai's Cube, Ruins of Sescheron, Season Journeys, Greyhollow Isle, Set Dungeons, the Necromancer) if I recall correctly.

I mean, obviously it's been on the back burner for about a year, but I can't really complain, I paid maybe £100 for five years of gameplay?

The Past, Present, And Future Of Diablo - https://kotaku.com/the-past-present-and-future-of-diablo-1830593195

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 23:56 (eleven months ago) link

^ what's kind of interesting there is that the wind is slightly taken out of the article's sails by the fact that it came out a few days after the announcement of the arrival of the PTR for the next patch, the first in a year.

The patch is two main parts:

A new season gimmick - after 'double treasure goblins' and 'double horadric chests', this one is just that you're always under the effect of a Ring of Royal Grandeur, meaning you only need 2 pieces of a set for a 3-pieces bonus, 3 for a 4, etc. I like this one a lot, because it by itself would mix up the existing meta game, which has been pretty steady for the last four seasons: https://d3resource.com/seasons/index.php.

Also buffs of all of the sets that aren't currently in the meta: "The (2) Set bonus has been increased from 1200% to 6000%" is roughly representative. This will hopefully move stuff around a bit - it's been nice to see some of the Youtubers who've been reheating the same guides for the last year get back into being interested in what can be done with forgotten builds (though as far as I know none of the mechanics have changed that much apart from the Grandeur mentioned above).

The previous carrot for seasons has been removed as well - you used to get one more stash tab (70 more squares) each season if you complete the 'journey', but you'll get them all up to the full 10 automatically with 2.6.4.

I completed the journey on the Strength characters, Crusader & Barbarian (as well as clearing up some old Achievements for those classes) when the current season started in September. And then I decided to come back and try to squeeze in the Dexterity classes, Monk and Demon Hunter, a few weeks back - it doesn't take much to get you up to speed if you've already got a well-progressed character - I didn't even have any remaining gear on the characters, but a few Legendaries from Kanai's Cube can kick-start a build pretty quickly.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 3 December 2018 18:13 (eleven months ago) link

In short this game is still fun, either for mindless killing shit and getting loot (both Monk and Demon Hunter have builds that can just clear the screen on the highest Torment levels) and for tougher fun that you sadly have to pay attention to.

calstars, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 13:56 (one month ago) link

I appreciate that they made the seasons the most appealing way to play, rather than perpetually grinding the same character forever. The downside is that I end up being pretty much done playing for a while before the season ends, never clean up my stash, and then when it's all dumped back to my main account I end up losing crap.

Not that it matters if all I care about is the seasons, but w/e

It's entirely online, Josh, even when you're playing singleplayer - a brutal but effective way prevent people hacking their characters to a trillion gold and all the gear.
