Netflix Streaming Film Recommendations: Because You Can't Always Play With Yourself

Message Bookmarked

I'm sure there's an ILE and ILF thread that's much like this, but since you can now stream Netflix on PS3, 360, PC and shortly on Wii, there's no reason for us to have to leave ILG or get into film snob arguments.

This is the thread to recommend films that are available for instant streaming on Netflix. Quality and cult recommendations are welcome as well as updates when popular films are suddenly available for streaming. Listing important info (length of film, family appropriate, etc) is encouraged.

I also recommend http://instantwatcher.com/ for updates.

Two to kick this off:

REVANCHE by Götz Spielmann - Amazing film, does great things with light and in tripping up your expectations. All show and no tell. A little over two hours but by the time you hit 60 minutes in, I think you'll be completely hooked. NB: Not a good film for watching with lil' kids or grandmas; there's a ton o' fuckin'.

ASTRO BOY - The complete original series is available! I shouldn't have to sell this but if you're unfamiliar: trippy animation, loopy stories, great character design, absurdist translation and voices. At twenty minutes a pop and fifty available episodes, it's a great one-a-day short or a good thing to catch a bit of while you rest from marathon play sessions.

i will also rep for severance, which is prob my favorite horror-comedy of the last decade. NOTE: there is a reason horror is the first thing in that description, this is not shaun of the dead type fare, NOT FOR KIDS or peeps that arent down with some fairly gruesome moments

also WARNING: BRITISH

I watched Revanche the other day due to a friend's recommendation. Wasn't particularly impressed with it. I appreciate the unadorned quietness of it, but it seems the film desperately hopes this GRAVITAS will cover up the fact that the story's kind of fucking dumb and unconvincing. Also the back end of the film's pretty much "well this thing's just writing itself!" kind of predictable. Wasn't diggin' it.

+1 for Primer (great mindfuck/puzzle movie, totally underlooked despite winning Sundance that year!) and TimeCrimes (how many good horror/time travel movies have you seen?). Severance was fun, too.

I really liked IT Crowd but it's kind of a grower and you need to accept that cheesy laugh track/live audience humor of ye olde sitcom mixed with lots of internet/geek references, down to the very densely packed set. I was amused that for one of the characters is always reading Love and Rockets throughout the show, though it's never mentioned explicitly.

I've been trying to get through Party Down, if for the sheer fact they seemed to employ everybody who was ever on Veronica Mars, but it feels like a slower, badly directed Curb Your Enthusiasm-type show. Good acting, though.

Enjoyed Jekyll, too. Oh, and Dexter's on streaming, too!

Nhex, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:53 (fourteen years ago) link

circa1916, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Things I just watched recently that I recommend:

Encounters at the End of the World - brilliant Herzog doc
Mitchell and Webb Look: Ssn 1 - nonstop fun, y'all britishers need to let these guys come to america
Humpday - really pleasantly surprised; this is a pretty damn good film!
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog - worth a peek and short
Mongol - not much of a plot, but sumptuous visuals in HD
Two Days in April - the story of five players entering the NFL Draft
Pucker Up - whistling documentary
Second Skin - kinda fair to middling MMORPG doc, occasionally dumb as hell
Masters of Horror: Joe Dante: Homecoming - consistently dumb as hell but funny
Love is the Devil - really really good biopic about Francis Bacon with Derek Jacobi and 007
Knife in the Water - great intro to Polanski, go watch this IMMEDIATELY if you haven't already... i think this was my fourth viewing
Baghead - kinda okay comedy/horror/buddy films
Tyson - amazing character study
Louis C.K.: Chewed Up - dude is a funny guy
Gomorrah - astonishing gangster film, crazy naturalistic and immersive
The Shield Around the K - label doc
Follow That Bird - good for nostalgia and larfs and cameos
The Order of Myths - mixed feelings but worth watching doc about Mobile's Mardi Gras from black/white community perspectives

Stuff I rated highly on that other thread without rambling descriptions attached:

Shrooms (horror)
Baghead (indie comedy w/just the slightest tinge of horror)
deadgirl (amazing but a rough unpleasant ride, prob check out what i said about it on the other thread before proceeding)
fall from grace (Westboro Baptist/Fred Phelps doc)
The Perfect Witness (serial killer thriller but not in any way that you would expect)

First and Last and Safeways ™ (jjjusten), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Cool shit I've watched recently:

Branded to Kill: off the wall 60's Yakuza pop-noir type thing. kind of incomprehensible at times, but very stylish and fun. first Suzuki film i've seen. Tokyo Drifter is also on demand. will look into that.

Planet of the Apes: first time seeing it. much better than i had anticipated, though the the "twist" if you can call it that dawns on the viewer much earlier than it does to Heston's character. also, this film kind of runs off of frustrating the audience most of the time which is kind of funny.

Antichrist: i don't know. i'm kind of a sucker for this arthouse horror stuff. Von Trier nakedly grappling (uh, no pun) with his themes here. absolutely stunning to look at. feels like it's going to be some sort of classic down the line. well, in the way something like IRREVERSIBLE is a classic i guess.

Virgin Spring: knowing Bergman and the Last House on the Left, this was kind of exactly what i expected it to be. very much tied to its story and less of Bergman directly gettin' all existential. though there is at least one short, anguished GOD'S SILENCE monologue. not his best or most interesting, but a solid Bergmanized version of the tale.

Tarkovsky's Solaris: second time seeing this. really love it. beautiful and devastating, not as dull as i remember. the extended driving sequence near the beginning is a favorite. so eery and hypnotic. this is a movie that i should own.

Playtime: took me a while to get into this, but once i did it was a blast. apt title, the entire thing's essentially a game. spot the gag. seems like something you could watch a dozen times and consistently catch something new. the restaurant segment is fucking all time. i read there's a nice 70mm (what else, i guess) print of this coming around here sometime soon. will go.

The Vanishing: really excellent, Dutch Hitchock-esque "thriller". thoroughly engrossing with a strong, sad emotional drive. not entirely sold on the ending, but i don't think it diminishes the film.

Wendy and Lucy: kind of avoided this for a while due to its LOLindie appearance. that was a mistake. this is a really beautiful, quiet, heartbreaking little film. oddly haunting. watched it twice in two days. i dug Old Joy, but i enjoyed this even more. will be following this Kelly Reichardt.

Duck Soup: i'd seen some of this in film class, but this was my first time all the way through. totally loved it. some genuinely cutting, ballsy satire in this thing. and what a brilliant ending! prompted me to throw a bunch of Marx bros. stuff in my queue.

Pierrot Le Fou: i've seen plenty of Godard, but this was probably his most thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining. would probably be the film i'd recommend to people who are looking for a way into his work.

Encounters at the End of the World: wonderful, top-tier Herzog doc imo. alternately hysterical and poignant. i saw this a little stoned, so that might have influenced my opinion. i want to see it again.

circa1916, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:33 (fourteen years ago) link

i will also def second Dr. Horrible, although i didnt know it was streaming available (Dan if you have not seen this you really should pretty much immediately)

Shield Around the K was alright, did not like homecoming at all.

Mitchell and Webb look is great but the repeat sketches start to get painfully samey

oh and one more and then i'll stop babbling here, all the seasons of Wire In the Blood are up there, and it is by far my most loved tv show that no one else cares about at all (really more of a sequential movie-length thing about a psychologist working on super weird murder cases, its absolutely brilliantly written, acted and shot.)

Playtime is an amazing movie but is really one of those movies you should see in the highest quality possible (ie not streaming digitally) - there's so much stuff going on that you really need to be able to see it.

I tried to watch Wire in the Blood and thought it was pretty bad, sorry.

I feel like even the HD streaming stuff isn't really the same quality as even a regular DVD. I'm not really snobby about this usually, I just think it's important for Playtime. Really though, the theater is the best place to see Playtime, if possible.

one of the best moviegoing experiences I ever had in my life was when I went to go see the 70mm print of Playtime at the Egyptian Theater a couple of years ago. plus it was the English dub, which I would ordinarily find offensively shitty but w/ Playtime it was incredibly liberating being able to let my eyes wander all over all that screen space picking out details. oh, and for some reason there were a bunch of kids in the theater too and it TOTALLY worked; they went into the same shell-shocked awe that all the wine-sipping turtleneck-wearing cineastes as soon as it started. A++++++++++++++++ would see again.

DEAD SNOW

A group of Norwegian friends get the scariest history lesson of their lives during a weekend getaway to the snowy town of Øksfjord, where the party is interrupted by throngs of Nazi zombies who once occupied the area. Armed with a machine-gun-equipped snowmobile, the gang fights for survival in director Tommy Wirkola's quirky horror, shot on location in the mountains of Norway. The film had its U.S. premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

it's here since every this-gen game system has the added bonus of offering netflix streaming and because most folks I know use their systems as movie boxes about 40-60% of the times they use them.
Anyone else against this thread being here? We can move it to ILE if there's enough unhappiness about it.

SHERMAN'S MARCH - _really_ long 1986 documentary about a guy moving from relationship to relationship in the South, following the march of Sherman (which he's ostensibly being paid by the NEA to make a film about). Notable for the ahead of its times style, some remarkably inciteful camera work, the characters he spends time with and the wild time capsule of early '80's america.
not for people who can't handle emo attitude, self-obsession or 2 1/2 hour films where virtually nothing happens.

Essentially, yes. He even uses the same footage over. Like the scene with his sister and him in the boat is used again.

Bright Leaves is interesting though, he talks about his familys history in creating the big tobacco industry.

I just finally subscribed to Netflix and set this up (on the 360). Sort of feels life changing (LOL). A little browsing and I already have 33 things in my instant queue and seven in the DVD queue - overwhelming. Was surprised with how easy it was to set up and how great it worked (HD picture quality pretty much equal to what I get via Time Warner Cable).

I didn't see it mentioned in the recommendations above, but I noticed the first five seasons of Saturday Night Live are available for instant viewing.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 22 March 2010 04:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Out of curiosity, does Netflix actually have HD streaming? I heard that they did, but I'm guessing it's only available on specific movies. The standard DVD-quality stuff still looks good, but I was wondering if there are 720 or 1080-quality examples?

Nhex, Monday, 22 March 2010 04:45 (fourteen years ago) link

good luck Jeff; you get lost down the rabbit hole pretty quick.

it's movie specific and they'll mention if it's available. Try 'The Orphanage', it's pretty lush. When it's on and you can get a good connection the picture is excellent. 'Bronson' was clean as I could ask for.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 22 March 2010 04:55 (fourteen years ago) link

er "the HD is movie specific"

forksclovetofu, Monday, 22 March 2010 04:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Instantwatcher is really nice, but everybody forgets that Netflix puts out RSS feeds (which are updated faster than IW):

Your Queue, New Releases and New Choices to Watch Instantly are good. If you're not checking your reader daily though, it might be too much to sort through since new stuff gets added every day or so.

OK for all zero people who were curious, "We Live in Public" is notably different than the (still worth watching) episode of First Person about JOsh Harris, which only talked about his Gilligan obsession and his We Live In Public site (the one w/just him & his girlfriend) and none of his other projects (or fucking Luvvy). Josh Harris is the craziest guy, so "We Live in Public" was great for discovering the many varieties of ways in which this guy was/is insane. I think the last 20 minutes showed Josh at his most unhinged. OTOH that was the part with the worst & biggest quantity of shitty voiceover. I did not really need an annoying narrator to tell me that Facebook is sort of being like watched in public, too.

Almost a thousand new catalog films in the past week or so; if i were a kid i would just watch movies all day.
Recent TVadds: full runs of the new Battlestar Galactica (skip the last two seasons), Eureka, Psych, In Plain Sight, Monk, Parks and Rec and Damages (finally!)
Plus a LOT of anime (though not much that's got me excited) and scads of horror films and midnight movie stuff like Mondo Cane and Venus in Furs
Oh and don't miss Jules Dassin's The Law and Flaherty's Louisiana Story

antexit, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 16:45 (thirteen years ago) link

it's on the launch page for the individual film: where you see "play" "more episodes" "rate".
not every film has the audio option, but many do.
and i should point out that i have not SEEN a commentary track yet, i just read that they were including them.

On his unusual expedition, Simon meets all sorts of curious characters, including a cute little blood cell and an irate bile duct. Vibeke Idsøe directs this inventive children's adventure.

The reason? He voiced concerns about the safety of the corporation's cancer-curing device. Now, Buck finds himself in a frantic race to neutralize the bomb and stop the fatal "cure" from being unleashed on the public.

In this darkly comic sci-fi film, a race of aliens known as the Monitors comes to Earth and exerts rigid control over all of humanity, instituting a series of strict new "laws" designed to rid the world of dangerous vices. It's up to a passionate band of underground rebels (including Guy Stockwell, Susan Oliver, Sherry Jackson and Larry Storch) to kick the extraterrestrial hall monitors out and send them back to outer space where they belong.

The Dungeonmaster
The evil wizard Mestema (Richard Moll) has waited centuries for the perfect opponent. He finally finds him in nerdy programmer Paul (Jeffrey Byron) -- an otherwise regular guy with an unusually close bond to his sentient computer -- whom he challenges to a series of trials. Testing Paul's physical strength and mental acuity, Mestema forces him to battle monsters, zombies and more to save his soul and that of his girlfriend, Gwen (Leslie Wing).

the main problem I have is pixelation during complicated camera movement (like, say, an aerial zoom out or quick pans), or a kind of strobe effect when the camera moves quickly. I decided a long time ago not to fuck with any action movies on streaming for that reason. also, I don't know about you guys, but I have to pause it fairly often because of a jerkiness that occasionally develops. I use PS3 for mine, and that jerky stuff didn't happen before the update which upped the resolution to 1080.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 22:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I rarely have to pause. As for the pixelization, it's streaming video. Adjust expectations accordingly.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 22:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Stumbled on some reviews that compared it to Aguirre and The New World and decided to dive in. It's not really either of those, but if you've got any interest in VIKING and/or METAL shit, check this out. Some very nice cinematography and a pretty brutal minimalist feel.

Police, Adjective has a lot of long takes of the policeman protagonist standing around on the street waiting for a pot deal to occur where very little happens. There are two conversation sequences (one between him and his wife, the other with his boss) that pay off, but the film is definitely tough-going arthouse fare.

i think all of rocky & bulwinkle which blows my mind i need a fan guide/index

i mostly only know the first few seasons but:

the (extremely long) first story arc starts out pretty rocky (HA HA) but gets good about halfway through--at least by the time they go to Pottsylvania, which is around episode 13.

box tops robbery (last six episodes of S1) is essential, as, basically, is upsidasium (beginning of S2) but there's a lot of dead air in upsidasium.

wailing whale is so-so but an early episode contains The Best Rocky And Bullwinkle Joke; it is utterly flawless; it involves a shipping magnate. i am laughing thinking about it. your mileage may vary of course but i mean i would be pretty surprised if someone could stand rocky and bullwinkle at all and did not think this was hilarious.

all the fractured fairy tales are worth it; most of the aesop and sons are too but you'll miss edward everett horton; dudley do-right is fun if you're in the mood; fuck peabody and sherman.

difficult listening hour, Thursday, 17 March 2011 01:56 (thirteen years ago) link

there's one great peabody and sherman opening where it just fades in abruptly on peabody and he says "hello out there. peabody's my name. i suppose you know yours." but it's downhill from there.

difficult listening hour, Thursday, 17 March 2011 02:04 (thirteen years ago) link

ℳℴℯ ❤\(◕‿◕✿ (Princess TamTam), Thursday, 17 March 2011 02:08 (thirteen years ago) link

i dunno i mean i spent my childhood watching tapes of these over and over and over again so maybe they wouldn't seem so bad to someone who wasn't already sick of them (cf. also CAPTAIN PETER "WRONGWAY" PEACHFUZZ, THE WORLD'S WORST SAILOR) but--and this is gonna sound just completely ridiculous--they're so contrived.

difficult listening hour, Thursday, 17 March 2011 02:10 (thirteen years ago) link

like, william tell has gone blind and can't hit the apple, so peabody places a "small but powerful magnet" in the apple, attracting william tell's arrowhead and making him hit it dead-on, which like okay maybe it is just how smug peabody is with his little bow tie about his Genius Solutions that could not possibly ever work that gets on my nerves

but then i mean i guess that is the point of peabody and sherman

i dunno

difficult listening hour, Thursday, 17 March 2011 02:12 (thirteen years ago) link

haha well i watched them over and over too, but that was at an age where i wasn't likely to dismiss anything for being contrived. for me all the supplemental shorts were like broccoli to get to the rocky & bullwinkle dessert, but peabody & s-man always felt like the best of those to me.

oh, i did not become militantly anti-peabody until i was an adult. fair.

i usually only see r&b these days when i visit my parents, when my dad and i generally settle in for one or two sessions per visit. between segments we hold efficient and informed quorums re: whether or not this next one should be skipped. my mom rolls her eyes in a different room.

difficult listening hour, Thursday, 17 March 2011 02:19 (thirteen years ago) link

and the bumper where they grow in the ground like flowers... how did they even think of that??? that's just flat out brilliant animation.

the internet went down in the middle of this important conversation and it became a housewide crisis involving 4 of the 6 residents standing around behind each others' shoulders saying HEY TRY CLICKING THAT but i'm back and here is the post i saved in a text file before rebooting my computer:

r&b always has great design, like all four of the main characters are just perfect and expressive and awesome, and i love things like the two opposing mirrored short/tall duos, and the flower bumper, and Fearless Leader's scarred wedge-head, but the actual animation was i believe farmed hurriedly out to a mexican studio and done really cheaply and last-minute and without a lot of communication and that's why it's always weird and distorted and has demented perspective and fucked-up colors and lacks any kind of consistency from episode to episode. but then that mirrors the plot; that is kind of its whole charm. so yeah i love it.

you know it would be cool if they had a "random episode" feature -- sometimes i have like 30 mins to burn & think "i could watch a random episode of 30 rock or arrested development on netflix" but i inevitably end up combing thru the descriptions or avoiding doing that altogether -- so a 'random episode' thing would be cool imo

2010 Moby Dick:
That infamous whale is bigger, badder and a whole lot stronger in this sci-fi reimagining of Herman Melville's classic tale of the battle between man, sea and sea creature starring "Xena" alum Renée O'Connor as the (traditionally male) narrator. But the boat -- now a high-tech submarine -- is also bigger, and Capt. Ahab (Barry Bostwick) is as determined as ever to settle the score and take down the mighty sea mammal that maimed him.

Oh man, the first four episodes of season 6 are all great for starters... Looking at the wiki episode guide for that season, you can't go wrong with any that I can see. There should be a least a few laughs to be had in each.

xp i agree abt senna, also know v little abt formula 1, but there is SO MUCH great footage & he himself seems actually humble & likeable & makes the ensuing, known end that much more impactful/dramatic/classically tragic that i sorta feel like the doc is such a slam dunk, im more thankful it wasnt somehow horribly f'd up than thinking it is partic amazing

It also will have Adult Swim shows Robot Chicken and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sony Pictures Television’s The Boondocks and Warner Bros Television’s Studio 2.0′s Childrens Hospital.
