2009 was an odd and wonderful year for video games. There was a veritable flood of software for the 360 and PS3 as both systems came of age; the DS continued to reign but the iPhone began making headway as the portable system of choice; the Wii, ignored by the hardcore, offered some of the year's most critically acclaimed and financially disastrous titles; PC gaming saw a blitz of high-profile exclusives and thousands of single-creator, addictive casual flash games. While there was no clear and overwhelming GAME OF THE YEAR, few would argue that 2009 was not a very, very good year for gamers.
Coint and Plick offers a peek into the mind of a cross-section of Joe Average gamers; thirty-one guys (mostly) and gals from their teens into their forties who still enjoy a good orc rampage/brick busting/mecha flight/historical sim/plastic guitar concert. More than declaring an arbitrarily definitive "top ten", Coint and Plick is meant as opportunity for the busy gamer to acquaint him/herself with some potential missed highlights and make plans for their personal upcoming gaming year. After all, everything on here is SOMEONE'S top ten game of the year, so everything on this list bears at least a demo play.
Coint and Plick was scored in Pazz and Jop style vote/point format: all voters had 100 points to divide among any ten games released in 2009. The maximum number of points each entry could receive were no more than thirty. In the end, ninety-three games were nominated. In case of a tie breaker, I went by number of people who voted for a game first and number of people who listed the game as their #1 of the year second. Bear in mind that not every voter used the full amount of points they had at their disposal, so the numbers don’t crunch exactly. In cases where a game was available on multiple systems, I listed only the systems that voters specified they played the game on. User comments for these games come from individual ballots as well as from past ILG posts; I’ve done a bit of editing to streamline but I’ve made every effort to maintain your meaning. My apologies if you feel misquoted; feel free to correct me on this thread.

Skygreenleopard: This game is great! I wasn't sure the cover shooting system would work well in multiplayer but, if anything, it helps turn deathmatch into a movie-like experience. Close calls with snipers, ambushes, assaults, sneaking around, chaingunning madness, etc. Most times I play there are several moments that make me think, man, that was straight out of a good Indiana Jones-style movie.

S1ocki: I'm not convinced games should try and be like big Hollywood blockbuster movies or tell stories in the same way, but if they do, they should all be as good as Uncharted 2. But more than that, this game was just gorgeous to look at, with a really skillful use of color that wasn't extraneous to the gameplay itself but rather nudged it along in subtle ways.

Antexit: I doubt this will get many votes, but I’m giving it the points I didn’t give GTA4 last year. If there were a few more things to buy and a little more diversity in the fun shit you can do, the three games taken together would be pretty close to what I was hoping GTA4 would be-- let’s hope the next GTA is more like these two and less like their pretentious older brother. Forksclovetofu An absolute love letter to gamers who grew up in the mid-eighties. The attention to detail is superb and the insider jokes ('Dan Sock'! Engrish interstices in the faux games! The kid turning his nose up at you if you tell him you read the manual!) are evocative and spot on. It attempts to be a Madeline for Nintenerds and it succeeds spectacularly.

I guess that’s the point but then it’s not really clever-clever in the best way; it’s just kind of gross nostalgia. I’m such a hypocrite I know but this is vapid and worse than paying $100 for Ar Tonelico on the game as fetish-object scale.

uncharted and mw2 that low seems hilariously challopsy in the true vein of ilx polls. the mw2 thread seems to be the most active thread on the board, so someone is playing it.
the uncharted=dragon's lair thing is really false. uncharted has extremely well employed triggered events but that's not the same thing at all. a closer modern equivalent to dragon's lair is a rock band/ddr style game.
― aarrissi-a-roni, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 20:59 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm almost exclusively a casual gamer that would rather through Frisbees at video game dogs rather than blow up aliens, but I played Uncharted 2 for a few hours the other day and it was pretty fun. I liked the sniper mode shooting parts the best, the jumping puzzles the least.

uncharted has extremely well employed triggered events but that's not the same thing at all.
Dragon's Lair is like an entire game of triggered events! But yes, Uncharted also has some good gunplay parts and some (incredibly easy) puzzles.
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 21:29 (fourteen years ago) link
i guess the difference is how you are able to respond to the triggered event, which in uncharted is usually a lot more open than, say, qtes (dragon's lair being the grandaddy of qte as a 'gameplay' tool). i tend to dislike triggered events because they are usually done so badly or lazily, but uncharted really makes them stitch in seamlessly. i have been very impressed, enough so that i think this aspect of the game is a huge plus instead of a potential flaw.

I think # of voters really made a difference here - for example, I've given up on shooters so no MW2 and no Uncharted 2 on my ballot.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 03:12 (fourteen years ago) link
Still, with the amount of chatter on that thread you'd think ONE person would have voted it GOTY. Even Episodes from Liberty City got a half vote! Maybe everyone suddenly soured it on it the last month? TBH that's what I thought would happen with SFIV and nobody would vote for it since it came out so long ago, but that doesn't look to be the case...
― Nhex, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 03:22 (fourteen years ago) link
Everyone still loves it! I'll bet everyone on the MW2 thread still puts in at least six hours a week. Somehow the amount people enjoy games no longer correlates to how they rate them. Imagine if this happened over on ILM! It'd be like everyone voting for the The Knife opera or whatever the eff and they secretly listen to Nickelback ten times a day.

If: If we're just going on what I spent the most time on this year I think this might just about get it. The temptation to go online for one game and just keep playing more is immense; especially when someone keeps offering you a rematch and you just know you could beat them again. The refinements from the already impressive 09 are really noticeable. The way that the ball bounces around and deflects off players feels remarkably realistic and pulling off an awesome long ball down the wing, Arshavin chip goal from a stupid angle, or cynical foul to avoid a certain equalizer, is more satisfying than ever.

Jamescobo: I pretty much love this. I'm not quite know sure how to talk about it without sounding like one of those Games As Art turds, but this game is so great and I apparently haven't even gotten to the revelatory part yet (fortunately the game gives you a trophy for sitting at the start screen for 10 minutes, which is conveniently just enough time to write furious emails/posts to e-bros to get off they asses and buy this game NOW NOW NOW) that it may be unavoidable. It pretty much single-handedly justifies the purchase of a 1080p tv.

Jeff LeVine: A very unique experience. I've certainly played no other game like it. The art, music, motion control and vibration worked together really well. As original as it is however, I just didn't find it terribly compelling. There's really not much game there. It's also way fucking schmaltzy.

JimD: Picross in 3D stops being a pen and paper logic puzzle and turns into a hammer and chisel logic puzzle! Chipping away at a big block until you're left with a little 3D sculpture is just hugely satisfying. And the chewiness of the puzzles is just right too, they're consistently challenging, sometimes infuriating, lots of fun. Even the time limits are perfectly judged (man, the number of times I've lost a star by being 5 seconds too slow...). So somehow this has ended up being my game of the year.

Jjjusten: So it's 2009, and big shock, we're all still out here shooting virtual zombies. Fortunately, unlike shooting virtual nazis, zombie killing never gets old. Lots of people got all bent out of shape about this one because of Valves longstanding "give you shit-tons of stuff for free forever" approach, but they can all shut up - this is not just some map pack bullshit, this is a whole different game. WAY improved over the original in every way, AI director is leaps forward, melee weapons are a game-changing addition, maps are far more intricate, replayablity is endless. I'm not even sure how they had the time to make a sequel this good in such a short period of time, but there's no question, this is worth every penny. So boohoo indignant fanboys, go back and play Counterstrike for the 4 billionth time and shut the fuck up.

Every voter was given the option to list their most disappointing game of the year on their ballot. For some, this meant their least favorite game; for some, the one that didn't live up to their expectations; for some, the reasoning was completely personal.
There was a definite consensus "most disappointing game", but several games pulled single votes. Let's start with those.
HIDERE – I pick BEATLES: ROCK BAND, not because of the game itself, but because the Rock Band peripherals (especially the guitars) are so incredibly fragile that leaving them alone for only a few months at a time causes them to stop working. I have two guitar controllers and they are both utterly broken despite not abusing them in the slightest. Yes I DID change the batteries, no that DIDN'T make any difference: one controller doesn't respond at all and the other registers a strum if a light breeze wafts across it. This renders all of the Rock Band games completely unplayable and that's really a shame because I love the concept and general execution of these games and would have bought Beatles: RB if the controllers actually worked. As it stands? Fuck this overly-fragile shit that costs nearly as much as an entire game system.
WillM – CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2 - It wasn't the game itself that disappointed me, but the utter mess leading up to its release. Certainly the loss of dedicated servers for PC was a blow; there's nothing better than renting a server for you and your friends to always guarantee a good game. For me, it was the whole F.A.G.S. scandal that really put it over the top. I have a hard enough time dealing with that shit on Xbox Live, but for a company to put out that kind of hate speech in their advertising completely put it over the top. I don't know if I would call it a "boycott," but that nonsense certainly determined that I did not care how good this game was: I wouldn't be paying for it.
If – KATAMARI FOREVER was a real bummer. "If it ain't broke" is all well and good with something as awesome as Katamari, but _literally_ the same levels as the 360 version from a couple of years ago? Daaaaaamn.
Euler – More than anything it was NOT HAVING ENOUGH TIME TO PLAY video games this year.
― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 16:18 (fourteen years ago) link
Two way tie for THIRD MOST DISAPPOINTING GAME
PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 2010 - 2 Votes
Roberto Spiralli – PES 10 was a terrible, terrible piece of shit. FIFA 2010 is also quite bad but got C+P points from me on account of at least being playable.
Sondrangerbot – I really wanted this to be the FIFA 2010 of 2009, but it was more like the FIFA 2006 of 2010.
BRUTAL LEGEND – 2 Votes
EZ Snappin - I love Tim Schafer (Psychonauts may be my game of the decade) and I love metal (\m/). The problem is that I hate RTS games and despite everything Schafer said in interviews, Brutal Legend is a goddamn RTS at heart. I finally ended up watching a friend play so I could enjoy the humor without hating the experience. It just isn't the same.
Mordy – What a shitty year for games.

SECOND PLACE FOR MOST DISAPPOINTING GAME
SCRIBBLENAUTS - 3 Votes
CraigG - Maybe if you're not lazy and unimaginative as I am, this is a good game? I had watched the videos and was drawn into the widespread hype of this amazing database where you could conjure up anything and solve puzzles in any way you can think of. Then I played the game and discovered two things: 1) If I tried to think of a Rube Goldberg way of solving a puzzle that it couldn't understand (which was more often than not), it wasn't going to work. 2) Once you solve the first twenty or so levels in the most obvious way possible, you no longer feel the need to be bothered being creative. And since this game is about the joy of being creative, I put it away forever.
Antexit –What a load of crap. It’s like a Resident Evil puzzle that has 50,000 pieces and only five of them do anything.
JimD – Woah, it's all true! I can spawn, like, ANY OBJECT I CAN THINK OF! This RULES! Oh, except none of them really do anything. And everything looks ugly. And suddenly I can't really think of anything other than LADDER or GUN.
― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 16:28 (fourteen years ago) link
#1 MOST DISAPPOINTING GAME OF 2009 - NOBY NOBY BOY – 5 Votes
JeffLevine - To say I was really looking forward to Keita Takahashi's follow up to Katamari Damacy would be an understatement. After all, it was Katamari Damacy that got me back into gaming and/or finally got me to take gaming seriously as a hobby. It was the reason I got a PS2, the very first console I ever bought by myself. That this LONG anticipated game ended up being some kind of pointless, interactive screen saver that didn't hold my interest for an hour; yeah, that's what I would call a disappointment.
Polyphonic - I don't know what I was expecting, but I definitely was hoping that this would be a game and not just a doodad.
S1ocki - This has got to be a practical joke.

Euler: My first Zelda since the SNES... maybe even the NES? Of the few 2009 releases I played, this one has maybe the highest production values and it's certainly fun. Still, I'd appreciate more depth.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUU
Salsa Shark: Sometimes I think this is fun, other times I am annoyed beyond belief. I am especially angry right now after some very aggravating attempts to buy a shield that involved trying to get Beedle's stupid air balloon to the ground, trying to board it while being shot at by pirates, having the balloon float away, subsequently dying and then repeating the process. I am SO tearing up my Beedle membership card.

Almost every one of the fifty or so plants in it was my favorite at one time or another-- when does that happen with the weapons in other games?

JimD: Hard to even remember what I loved about this, but it's here cos I know I spent a big chunk of my year on it and really enjoyed it at the time. I guess this is a great example of a relatively new game design trend: games that don't need to challenge you to keep you entertained. They can just keep giving you new toys and that'll have the same effect. It's only valid because it's true... well, at least until you've seen all the toys and then that's it and there's little point of ever playing it again. But hey, that's not the end of the world: who has time to replay games these days anyway?

CraigG : This has managed to slightly delay my desire to sell my Wii. I loved New Super Mario on the DS and this is just more of the same. While most of the power-ups are re-skinned from previous Mario adventures, there is a great variety that (like SMB 3) helps keep the game fresh. I guess the main appeal here is nostalgia; I got Mario Bros 3 on the NES for my birthday at an impressionable age. It's just so endlessly fun to have the same gameplay mechanics in the familiar desert, ice, air, etc, scenarios but with all new levels!

As promised, before we do the top five I wanted a little palate cleanser. So here is the final "biggest disappointment of the year" vote. It is presented unedited and in HD.
Jjjusten: FUEL
Oh you jerkoff goddamn dirtbags.
This game is maybe the biggest missed opportunity of the decade. What makes is worse is that all the pieces are there for this to be great, which made me wait in vain for the patch that never arrived. It is hard to believe that this broken piece of crap didn't get some post-release developer loving, because the problems are so glaring that they really arent up to debate. A shortlist:
1. Ok, so you have huge freeroaming postapocalyptic wasteland. Awesome right? Well, it might be if there were ANY OTHER PEOPLE LIKE YOU DRIVING AROUND. Instead, with the exception of a very few chase cars, all you get is big fuck off instant crash you heavy earthmovers and trucks. In what world does this decision even begin to make sense.
2. So the races are pretty great. Except for when they are completely broken and unwinnable. For example, when you hit some mystical spot on a dirt hill where no motorcycle can manage to get up it (well, with the notable exception of all the mortorcycles getting driven by the other AI dudes). Oh and by the way, if you fuck up even once, you can't win the race. Ever. (Apparently Codemasters decided NOT to include the rewind function in this because uh) Which brings us to:
3. FUCKING LOAD SCREENS. Before every race. After every race. Also, whenever you restart a race. Long boring load screens with the same looped terrible music EVERY TIME. Yet, this is a game where there are no load screens when you are out driving randomly over a supremely detailed sandbox open world. Again, how is this even possible? What manager didn't stop this at the design stage. IT'S MADDENING.
4. The open world, which I am sure took the majority of game design time is utterly and completely pointless. Outside of some weird achievement mining, there is no reason whatsoever to go outside of the camps where the races occur. Ever. And if you're thinking that if nothing else, driving to the next camp on the world map will have some purpose, sorry, no, you are wrong. Because the people who made this game hate you, and apparently themselves, because the drive to the next camp will take approximately 20 minutes, unless you manage to hit some huge impassable unmapped canyon that will require you to backtrack and add another 10 minutes to that. On the way, if you are really lucky, you may have the opportunity to run into some of the random gas cans scattered about or crash into a wrecked vehicle that gets you a new horrible livery for one of the cars you may or may not have.
5. Oh and yeah, those gas cans? One assumes that they are a means to keep your car going, and so you have to keep on the edge of your seat making sure you don't run out of fuel, right? Nope. FUEL is actually in game money, so hitting those gas cans gets you incrementally closer to buying some new piece of shit car that despite its superior rankings in the stats department might be far worse than the one you are driving. Oh yeah, and by the way, most races require you to pick from a shortlist of specific cars, so if you pick the wrong one, you dont get to play. Not the right KIND of car, but the actual specific model of 4 wheeler with the exact dumbed down road warrior name. For no reason. So guess how often you bother buying a car because it looks like fun vs. waiting until you hit the next roadblocked race and buying the required vehicle. yep.
I tried, good lord I tried to make this game have some tiny shred of value, some playability, any reason whatsoever to grind through the terrible parts to get to the good stuff. But you just can't do it, the flashes of enjoyability are so sparse that it just can not justify the terrible endless hours you have to sink into it.
Never buy this game, no matter how cheap it gets.

i did although not extensively. at least not while i was sober. the mutliplay just felt like a hassle rather than an advancement. i was using the same control set-up and thought it was a little loose and unresponsive. lol @ fighting game nerds here tho mb
my biggest beef i guess is like main console smb releases used to push boundaries both mechanically and visually. they felt like deeply considered attempts to improve/expand/reconsider the franchise and platforming generally. nsmbw is incredibly lazy in that sense but its also really sloppy. compare the castle in smw where u are riding the snake blocks at the start to similar lvl in nsmbw ~ the placement of obstacles the timing the layout the choices offered the player are all better, more intuitive, more careful, more cunning in the older game.
smb games used to have the ~best~ level layouts around nswmb is blocky and random and uses space poorly. aerial levels in smb3 feel like they were designed by god on some instinctive preordained shit. whereas nsmbw feels like kids playing w/lego sets.

The first sentence I understand. However, for me the followup would be:
It was hilarious, with everyone yelling, "Oh my god! Dude, you are such a dick!" and then peals of laughter rang out until the next exclamation of, "You bastard! You're gonna pay for that!"
Didn't ever get very far but had a great time.

BNW: Gigantic RPG with solid production all the way through. What it needs: more locations, more variety in monsters, more randomly triggered events, wandering monsters and less prolonged dungeon crawls.

Antexit: I was going to put Retro Gaming Challenge on the list but I realized this pretty much covers it. This year I really like games that embrace their essential game-ness, without aspiring to other media-- I love Uncharted but I still want movies to be movies and games to be games. Demon’s (or Demons or Demons’) Souls reminded me for the first time in forever what it felt like to play incredibly hard games when I was a kid -- how inexplicably rewarding progress can be just for its own sake and without all the little cookies games today give you for taking every step.
Famitsu interview translated

Forksclovetofu: I started playing this during the infamous “black Halloween weekend” and the first three hours were SO FRUSTRATING, but when the game opens up and shows you its depth and payoff it's totally worth it. When I found my first complete set of armor in a back room I was literally dancing on the couch. It's like playing dungeons and dragons with a very very pissed off DM who knows what they're doing. Astonishingly atmospheric and demanding but never unfair. It may be the game I’m most proud of having beaten and was absolutely my favorite game of the year.

Aarrissi-a-roni: It is the kind of game where you are guaranteed to have that dark night of the soul moment where you have to ask yourself if you are really going to do that same goddamn level for the 25th time, but a bit of perseverance will get you through. And the blue phantom mechanism is a get out of jail free card if there is a boss that you really get stuck on, as happened to me twice. I couldn't recommend this game enough. It is really a step beyond.
The world of Demon’s Souls vs Assassin’s Creed 2
Polyphonic: I am only on World 1, Level 2 and it is already very clear that this is a deep and very cool game. Every decision that was made with the property was the right one. When I bought it at Gamestop, the dorks at the register said they hadn't played it because they were afraid of it. Cowards.
Lamp: Technically amazing, even if it isnt particularly loveable.

Adam: Watching goons get progressively more freaked out as you take down their buddies one by one is pretty satisfying. Also the way that pushing the left stick all the way forward doesn't make Batman run--dude just walks… and very confidently so for a guy wearing a cape.

Arkham Asylum's Sophisticated Story
S1ocki: Not only a great game, but one that managed to incorporate the character's mythology in a way that surprised and impressed me. The flashback scenes were more artful and interesting storytelling than I'd ever seen in a video game, rivaling the Batman movies in their interpretation of the endlessly re-told tale of the Caped Crusader's origins, and—without giving too much away—at points using the familiar conventions of video gaming in really innovative ways. As I said about Uncharted 2, I'm skeptical of video games' ability to replace, or even mimic, cinematic storytelling, but this pointed to some interesting new directions.

Arkham Asylum Slash
CraigG : I just found this game satisfying in pretty much every way. The story line was good without feeling the need to get overly complex, the fighting is really great and you get a warm glow when you manage to wipe out over ten guys without taking a single hit. The stealth sections, wiping out a room one by one, watching them panic… it’s all so satisfying. Everything is well balanced in terms of combat/stealth and I feel the only thing letting the game down IMHO are the boss battles, which are mostly only fun because they fill the fight with lots of fighting against regular grunts too. Overall, easily the best game I played all year.
http://ps3thevolution.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/batman_arkham_asylum.jpg
Forksclovetofu: Less groundbreaking and more that it just does everything perfectly right. I appreciate the ridiculous depth; it’s an adventure, button masher, stealth, puzzle hunter, fighting game jammed into one. Never really hits a slow point; I found it amazingly well balanced and engaging.
NYT Review with obligatory ‘Confederacy of Dunces’ reference
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W2RdF5ifDU
Mordy: This is one of the best things I've played this year. I don't know if that's high praise for the game, tho, or just a good indication of how disappointing 2009 has been for gaming.
"There are 314 breakable TVs on Arkham Island."
Antexit: Arkham does some great stuff with the Batman story and there are some amazing Psycho Mantis-level mindfucks. Not only is it the first superhero game that makes you feel like you're the hero in his every aspect (as opposed to the Spidey games, which got swinging and crawling great and everything else sucks) but it's a better stealth game in a lot of ways than Metal Gear. I love how balanced the combat is! The bad guys seem to be able to take about as many hits as you, and you really get the sense that you're up against a room full of bad guys and the reason you come out on top is not that they're all really weak or that you have some artificial advantage but that they're a bunch of thugs and you're BATMAN.

Jjjusten: This is 80% great, but drops in the ranks a little bit in retrospect for the fact that it's way too easy. The boss battles are the worst aspect of that; I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the Killer Croc level is, no joke, ONE OF THE DUMBEST AND WORST LEVELS IN MODERN GAMING. Whoever decided that replacing challenging or difficulty with easy, mindbending tedium needs to get a pink-slip. That said, when the game is on, it's on. Plus, it looks great... except everyone I talk to plays 90% of the game in detective mode, so we never actually see much of it. http://elmundotech.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/highres_screenshot_00142_resize.jpg

So some quick parting thoughts:
This project ended up being more of a handful than I thought (over 72 single spaced pages!) but gave me an idea of how broad the boundaries of the hobby have become. It also reinforced how impossible it is to keep up with what's out there; even in a wii/ps3/360/ps2/PC/DS/PSP household, you'd be forced to play each game on this list for only four days apiece to be done by 2011.
As for myself, I still want to play (or play more of) Scribblenauts, Henry Hatsworth, Uncharted 2, Way of the Samurai 3, A Boy and His Blob, Pixeljunk Shooter, Dragon Age Origins, Muramasa, Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes, Little King Story, Aaaaaaaa, Afrika, Wipeout HD, New Monkey Island, New Sam and Max, New Super Mario Brothers, 50 Cent: Blood in the Sand, Trine, Borderlands, Professor Layton, Red Faction Guerilla, Nostalgia, Fat Princess, Metroid Prime Trilogy... and that's just for starters! I've still got years-old games to play and more coming out every day.
This glut of options is why communities like ILG are so very helpful; speaking with real, quirky and opinionated folks about their tastes, decisions, purchases, frustrations and obsessions provides the editorial filter that 99% of gaming journalism doesn't. This, more than headshots and perfect combos, is what social gaming is really about for me.
Alright, now I'm gonna try to take back on Valkyria Chronicles.

Thanks forks-- I really loved reading this and it's a trip to see how much changes when you see games ranked according to how much the dudes who buy and play the games have actually enjoyed and valued them. This list may be totally unique in that way! I think the top five would still be just as good if you picked them up and played them in five years, at the end of this generation and when they've been bit to death by what follows-- compare that to something like Gears of War or other recent critical faves. I knew I was frustratingly stuck on a level when I had to listen to joker or harley or gordon or thug #12 or a warden say the same shit 99BAZILLION times. They drastically underestimated either how many variants they needed or when the time was to cut off the talking. Having it go on forever sometimes made me have to play it on mute when hunting for riddles.
― forksclovetofu, Thursday, 11 February 2010 05:53 (fourteen years ago) link
Idk, the croc thing was this maddening combo of really easy and really slow and really unfun.
― SMALL BONES, SMALL BODIES (jjjusten), Thursday, 11 February 2010 05:57 (fourteen years ago) link
Biggest problem I have w/the game is kind of the zero replayability factor.
― SMALL BONES, SMALL BODIES (jjjusten), Thursday, 11 February 2010 05:58 (fourteen years ago) link
That being said, like bioshock, worth it for how great a single playthrough can be when in the right hands.

1. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor (19 POINTS)2. Dragon Age: Origins (13 POINTS)3. Trials HD (12 POINTS)4. Games by jtmb02 (achievement unlocked, this is the only level, run elephant run) (11 POINTS)5. Killing Floor (10 POINTS)6. Shadow Complex (9 POINTS)7. Arkham Asylum (8 POINTS)8. 1 Vs 100 (7 POINTS)9. Suikoden Tierkreis (6 POINTS)10. Droplitz (5 POINTS)
In retrospect I would've made some changes, added & dropped some things, but... yeah that was my list.
Forks if you need some help next year definitely, definitely let me know, I am totally in. Awesome work. What a bizarre top 10 though-- I guess I forgot how many Ps3ers are on here.

yeah - amazing work forks this was a pleasure to read!

1. Arkham Asylum - (20 points)2. Skate 2 - (18points)3. Fallout 3 - Broken Steel - (15points)4. Fallout 3 - Point Lookout - (15points)5. Trials HD - (10points)6. New Super Mario Brothers Wii - (9points)7. Bowser's Inside Story - (8points)8. Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - (5points)
Disappointment - Scribblenauts
I probably would have tied Arkham Assylum and Borderlands at top, and bumped Zelda off the list if I had played Borderlands before the ballot.
Thanks again Forks!

― wall•egina (s1ocki), Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:42 (fourteen years ago) link
kinda amazed arkham asylum finished #1. sure the demo was fun but far from legendary... anyway, great job obviously forks!
― sonderangerbot, Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:51 (fourteen years ago) link
If even 60% of the demo's fun quotient carries over through the rest of the game, it will unambiguously be my #1 game of 2009 (even tho I didn't even touch the demo until 2010).

i have the feeling a bunch of people warmed up to borderlands just after they voted in the poll, obv craigG upthread and i think mordy as well?
xpost oh dan you are in for a treat, the rest of the game is way more fun than the demo, it goes in lots of directions that you def will not see coming, plus - SO MANY GADGETS
― 3:16 (jjjusten), Thursday, 11 February 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago) link
i am working thru borderlands hells slow because i am doing it coop with a friend and we can't get on as much as we we would like. anyhow, we only recently got past the first area and the game has finally kicked in now. before i was thinking that it was a super average game that i was only playing cos of the coop but now i am loving it and thinking of starting over 1p to quell the frustration of our glacial coop progress.

The only major difference is online play, right?
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Thursday, 11 February 2010 18:01 (fourteen years ago) link
a bunch of new weapons/tech too, and new single-player campaign (also you could play the original worms armageddon online)

Way of the Samurai 3 (7 points)8. Retro Game Challenge (7 points)9. Metroid Prime Trilogy (6 points)10. Big Word Puzzle Book (5 points)

So I guess I'll give batman a second chance. I hated that demo so much though, I was REALLY BORED within five minutes. Clearly I missed something. Going to grab it again today and give it another go.
Forks, u hero. I'd like to buy you a pint! Paypal? :-)

Oh, and my votes were:
Plants vs Zombies - 5ptsFallout 3: Point Lookout - 5ptsBeatles Rock Band - 5ptsRetro Game Challenge - 5ptsTekken 6 - 10ptsBayonetta - 10pts1 vs 100 - 10ptsBattlefield 1943 - 10ptsShadow Complex - 10ptsRittai Picross - 30pts
Should've finessed my scoring a bit really, kinda nuts that I gave tekken 6 the same score as bayonetta.
― JimD, Friday, 12 February 2010 11:11 (fourteen years ago) link
(In other news, I fiddled around in some of the deeper menus of Rittai Picross last night, trying to get the text to turn english...and managed to delete my savegame and my 235 completed puzzles, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO). Will wait for the euro one before I restart, I think.
