Did people love Far Cry anyway though? I know I did (possibly even as much as I loved Half Life 2), but it doesn't seem to get talked about very often.

crysis single player demo is awesome. MAXIMUM STRENGTH
― adam, Monday, 29 October 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)
My computer audibly weeps whenever I even type the word Crysis. I do like the bits I've seen where you can hoist a guy by the neck and carry him around, though (as well as the ability to kill enemy soldiers with superfast thrown live chickens).

OK, after reading this, I am really impressed- the idea of making the game harder not by dialing up enemy damage and reducing yours but by making it more realistic (Koreans suddenly speak Korean and as such can't be effectively eavesdropped on; no magical HUD crosshair, forcing you to actually sight down your weapon in "aim" mode) is a neat one.
― Telephone thing, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)
well - did anybody on here pick this up? where did the buzz go?
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)
It's PC only, right? Pretty sure it would eat my system for breakfast.
― polyphonic, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 03:04 (eighteen years ago)
I tried out the demo last night. On my okay computer, it ran decently on the low setting, okay on medium and not too good on high - though it looked great (as long as I didn't move), but the very high options were not even selectable. I'm going to go buy some more RAM today and see if that helps things out - especially because I was getting a fair amount of texture pop-in, and then I'm hopefully going to pick up the game.
I spent more time fiddling with the settings than playing the demo, but what I saw I liked. The opening reminded me a bit of MGS3 - parachuting into a jungle - the guys advance tech suit, though thankfully the opening cut scenes weren't thirty minutes long, followed by me drowning in a swamp. I liked that there seemed to be a lot of options of how you can move through the game - it seems like it's going to be very re-playable. For instance, after getting bogged down a couple times in an enemy encampment up the coast to the right of the communication tower, I was able to get past that section, just by swimming around 'em - avoiding it completely.
Has anybody on here tried out the multiplayer?
Since I never played it, should I pick up Far Cry too - or are the games too similar? My brother said he couldn't get into Crysis as much as he thought he would because it reminded him too much of Far Cry...
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 20 December 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)
i've only played the deathmatch mode and it sucked. destroying a whole building by throwing a dumpster at it again and again and again is good though.
― adam, Friday, 21 December 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)
I tried deathmatch last night when I was more than half asleep - I think I died over twenty times in a row without getting a single kill! It seemed pretty much like every other simple, old-school pick-up deathmatch?
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 21 December 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)
i am downloading the demo now and am impressed with their server if nothing else, 530 kb/sec, never seen my cable move that fast :o
― bnw, Saturday, 22 December 2007 02:28 (eighteen years ago)
Maybe I'm just not used to playing first person shooters with a mouse and a keyboard, but this game is really hard. Playing on normal I'm dying quite a lot...
― Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 23 December 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)
This tweak guide is pretty useful / interesting... http://www.tweakguides.com/Crysis_1.html
But after fooling and fooling with this, I now realize I can only play the game on low :( (but even there the frame rate is weird, starting at around 70fps, but in heavy combat dropping down to 20 fps)
Still, it looks okay on low, but considering the game's main attractions are supposed to be the graphics and physics, I feel like I'm missing out. May put the game aside until I can get a better computer or until they come out with a more optimized patch.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 28 December 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)
fuck this game :( unreal tournament 3 runs fine!
― DG, Saturday, 1 March 2008 21:35 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, I've just shelved it for the time being. I'll come back to it when somebody releases a sub-£200 graphics card which can cope with it in full detail/resolution with a 45fps minimum. Course, this might mean waiting another 18 months.
― JimD, Sunday, 2 March 2008 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

Anybody picking up the new one? Supposedly optimized somewhat. I'll probably pick it up via steam - maybe download overnight (15 gig!). Feel weird, since I never finished the first game - hard drive died when I was around halfway through and I just never felt like repeating so much of the game yet

also I should really finally get Far Cry
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 17:35 (seventeen years ago)
Have played 1/3 or 1/2 way through Crysis Warhead so far. I'm liking it pretty well (I think partially because I haven't played a single player FPS in quite a while). Just finished the first big battle with a giant alien and it was pretty awesome (tough too). A really good, visually impressive "boss" fight. The open way some of the battle scenarios unfold throughout the game (same as in the first) is what impresses me the most - they just feel much more organic than these kinds of things usually feel. I also like the way the game lets you use stealth, if you so desire (and I usually do).
My complaints would be, I don't think Warhead actually runs any better than the first game (on my current set-up), despite what was promised. I had a few crash problems early on, but updating my graphic card drivers (doh) seemed to take care of it. But the game crashed again last night as I was trying to save and quit (hopefully it'll be okay when I return to it). And occasionally things will kind of hitch up, even playing on medium. Considering I can play every other game I know of on high or very high settings with basically no problems, the absurd demands of Crysis are obviously still slightly disappointing.

Huh. His candour is very admirable and all, but he's just talked me out of buying his game.
Why is this far cry 2 anyway? Does it have anything at all in common with far cry 1, beyond being an fps? Plot? Gameplay? Atmosphere? Developer? As far as I can tell they're all completely different. It's like they bought the Toy Story licence, made Apocalypse Now, and then called it Toy Story 3.
― JimD, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 08:49 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I don't think there's any connection between the games, other than they are both open world first person shooters. Don't really understand why the kept the name, except to justify purchasing it in the first place maybe. Those comments sure do make it sound like they were kind of forced to rush out Far Cry 2 a bit sooner than some people working on it would have liked. I'm playing it now though, and I'm kind of enjoying it (only 12% complete so far however, so a lot could change). I agree it has problems, but what sandbox game doesn't? On the plus side, the world they've created is a pretty impressive environment to wander around in. You can go by foot through miles and miles of bush, ride various cars, and take boats around. I like the pacing. It seems a little slower, a little more casual. So far, the various mission scenarios, while perhaps a bit too similiar, are also fun to play out, to fight your way through (actually like playing Crysis w/o the super suit, where you have a lot of options on how you want to resolve each situation). I've done a bit of multiplayer too, and really like the maps I've played on. The multiplayer matches feel solid, but don't really stand out of the pack enough. It's not quite enough to present solid multiplayer, when excellent choices already exist. The game just feels like a B though. In a season that seems to be packed with A games, I could understand why people would skip it for now.
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)
been playing Far Cry 1 the past coupla weeks - made the mistake of starting the game on realistic mode, which it turns out is hellishly difficult and unrealistic. it's one shot, one kill (regarding your dude, anyway - it takes like a full clip to take down any bad guy) and you have to play the entire game in stealth mode (ie. in the prone position, crawling through shrubs), to have any chance of survival. checkpoint system + lack of quicksaves make for the most infuriating gaming experience in a long ass time, i had to replay big chunks of the game dozens of times. finally made it to the volcano level, and at this point i've lost my will to even complete the game. utter dogshit. the cinematics are so awful that i feel like i'm being mocked for even playing this shit. halo on legendary mode is tough, but still very beatable; this is just a punishing grind of a game.
found out halfway through game that you can actually quicksave by opening the ui console and typing /save_game <insert name here> but it feels like cheating; btw, FUCK THIS GAME for making me feel like i'm cheating by wanting to SAVE THE FUCKING GAME
still, it has some things going for it, and i can sorta envision myself enjoying it in an alternate universe where i'm smart enough to play it on a more reasonable difficulty.
why's that? reading his comments actually raised my interest level in FC2.

― fuzzy dunlop (cozwn), Saturday, 15 November 2008 10:17 (seventeen years ago)
Oh, and yeah...Clint's comments seem to agree with most of the criticisms, it's like he's saying "yeah, in lots of ways this isn't the game we wanted it to be, or claimed it was". eg
Some fairly serious weaknesses on the story telling side to help make the player feel that these guys are saying 'if you go do this mission, we'll help you find the Jackal' - it's just not there... and yeah, you're right, we could have given a few more clues and sprinkled the actual main story threads through the bulk of the faction missions better for sure...
Etc etc. Dunno, just made me think, with so many other things to play this Christmas, that I was happy to skip FC2.
― JimD, Saturday, 15 November 2008 10:18 (seventeen years ago)
part of me suspects that many game producers would have similar things to say about their completed projects, eg. we had a lot of ideas but only had the time & technology to perfect x, y and z - what it really drove home for me is how difficult ambitious game design is. like, it's one thing to look at current games and complain about the lack of imagination in mainstream gaming, but i think for a while i sorta took it for granted that the process was just 'have ideas => use computer magic to implement => here's ur game!!!!'
― ಥ﹏ಥ (cankles), Saturday, 15 November 2008 11:03 (seventeen years ago)

Giving Crysis a go. Yeah it's pretty too although I probably would have been more overwhelmed if I'd played it when it came out (impossible I know) Gonna try ramping up the settings tonight.
I thought at first it was really hard (or I was really shit) until I realised I should be using stealth a hell of a lot more, and not trying to kill every single enemy. Still a bit frustrated at the ridiculous amount of damage that both I and the enemies can take - it leads to all round carelessness. Wouldn't mind if the bullets were a tad more hurtful.
― last night i dreamt somebody shoved me (ledge), Monday, 6 July 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)
it ain't entirely bug free either. "[triple A emplacements] only take one shot from your tank cannon to blow up." Oh yeah, how come I fired four shells at one and and then three RPGs and it was still there?
― last night i dreamt somebody shoved me (ledge), Monday, 6 July 2009 18:18 (sixteen years ago)
ok, thanks to the cult thread and reading some interesting stuff linked there, got far cry 2 and played it for the first time last night - not very far in, but so far pretty good? surprised by the quality of the AI so far, low level grunts are not stupid and don't like getting shot. Realism that dudes don't just get up after eating a grenade is refreshing after years of FPS POWAR ARMOR. Also there is def the indication right off that you are prob in for a long haul - pacing is slow but not boring (knock on wood i suppose). Anybody else played/playing this?
Also confused by people complaining about enemies respawning at the roadblock checkpoints - thinking that well yeah dude, third world warzone full of disposable soldiers = pretty much constant supply of cannon fodder.
― Bo-rad Crewcial Overdrive (jjjusten), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

my general puss-ass instinct for all fps's is to creep around as long a way off as possible and gank from afar. this seems to be the entire mo of this game?
― goole, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 20:17 (sixteen years ago)
yeah totally. if you go in guns a blazin you will get your ass handed to you 9 times out of ten. i got stuck on one stupidly simple get from here to there mission and had to do it like 10 times and whereas you would think that would be super annoying it actually felt like building strategy and was 100% awesome fun. this is partially because it is so off the rails, so you know approx where the bad dudes are, but you can come at them from a bunch of different angles, and they do the same thing to you. huge kudos to the AI when it comes to flanking and kicking the crap out of you too.

― Nhex, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)
It's really pretty too.
― Mordy, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 22:07 (sixteen years ago)
hey wow this game makes great use of the day/night cycle - it is fucking HARD to drive in the dark - also seems like the AI takes it into account, so if you do a raid at night you can get the drop on dudes a little easier. of course if you pop out into a lighted area, they bear down on you pretty much immediately, more so than during the day.
this game am smart.
― and the oscar goes to "HOT TUB TIME MACHINE!" (jjjusten), Thursday, 16 July 2009 17:05 (sixteen years ago)
so it looks like ppl knock this game because of the respawning checkpoints. i can see that. i think the problem really is that there are NO non-hostile people on the map. there aren't any civilians! i guess it would really not do to allow the player to gun down african women at a market GTA style, but the fact that you never just drive or walk past anyone w/o incident makes the game feel underpopulated, paradoxically

i got far cry 2 the other night. i'm not very far (just getting to mike's bar, although i got there at night and had to go find somewhere to sleep until it opens) but this game is amazing so far. everything feels really nice (driving, shooting, the handheld map) and it seems like a really smart game.
is there an easy way to see which guns you're carrying? i mean, you have that menu that shows the stats of all the guns, but i had a hard time figuring out which ones i had and if i should swap them for the ones dropped by dead soldiers.
― Ømår Littel (Jordan), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:57 (sixteen years ago)
the whole jamming of salvaged weapons thing has made me use the non picked up guns pretty much exclusively. in this game middle of a firefight + jammed weapon = pretty much u gonna die.
― wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 15:15 (sixteen years ago)
yeah don't use the dropped guns, they're all in terrible condition. apparently the AK is less jam-prone than the G3 (realism!) but not by much
shooting but also swimming rusts your guns out i think. i've been rolling around with the 1903 springfield and a mac-10 as a secondary weapon, seems to work pretty well. i don't know if the reliability upgrades are worth it, you can stop by the gun shop and pick up a brand new one before doing anything
oh and apparently there are bonus missions? some kind of pre-order code deal...

well my first mission was to rescue my best buddy from a place where he was held captive (he is the older indian/sikh dude), and now im doing his buddy mission where i divert intel on some arms smuggler mission. so if thats different than what you guys are up to, then it might make a difference.

maybe i should give this a go in an ILG PLAYERS CLUB style. I wasn't overly impressed by crysis, grpahically lovely of course but gameplay and story both a bit meh. how does far cry (1 or 2) compare?

protip: when you're doing missions from a particular faction, finish all those missions before doing some from somewhere else. apparently i "switched sides" to faction B and cut off the first mission string from faction A. shit. i'm considering starting the whole damn game over, i hate getting cut out of content!

― goole, Saturday, 25 July 2009 20:54 (sixteen years ago)
oh man, no.
i am crawling on this game, but i got an hour or two in yesterday. i wanted to be slick on the first assassination mission (the police chief motorcade), but i was spotted and got taken out by a jeep. my "buddy" stepped in and when i came to it was an easy firefight.
then i got the mission to blow up the medicine shipments at the trainyard (!) and died about 5 times at various checkpoints while trying to get there. so i guess just blowing through them isn't a good idea, huh? they seem to get in their rides and hunt you down. maybe i should take the bus?
― Ømår Littel (Jordan), Monday, 27 July 2009 15:06 (sixteen years ago)
far cry 2 - fucking LOVE this game. it's like underrated ST/Amiga game HUNTER for the 21st century. or Midwinter, kinda reminds me of that. i've waited like 15 years for this game!
you should've seen the stealthy number i pulled on a guard post last night. 3 guards with AKs, all taken out one by one with silent pistol headshots from behind. they didn't know what hit them.
― #/.'#/'@ilikecats (g-kit), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 12:07 (sixteen years ago)
ok so i broke down and got some maps and have ground out EVERY SINGLE diamond case. i knew i would be driven by aspie rage to do it at some point.
and otm on the writing! pretty ingenious how the buddy missions/subversion submissions are all the same, but depending on which buddy you have, the explanation for each changes. so cool.

There's a new trend that's been going around the gaming blogosphere: Playing Far Cry 2 under the rule of 'permanent death.' Basically, the object is to play the game on normal difficulty until you die once, and that's it. Saves are allowed, of course.
The people who are engaging in this mode are mostly writing about how permanent death affects the player's relationship to the plot and characters, ie the impact of not getting a do-over if a buddy is killed. Since I've started playing on permanent death, however, I've found that the changed dynamic of the game play is far more engaging than any differences in the plot/character development. I'm only about 8 percent into it so far, But the following differences make it an entirely new game:
-Since you don't want to die, you have to minimize all encounters with the enemy. Traveling on foot through everywhere but Pala and its outskirts, therefore, is the best way to avoid guard posts and patrols on the way to each objective. The effect of this is two-fold: Not only does it minimize the sometimes-tedious encounters with respawning guard posts and vehicle patrols, but it also heightens the tension whenever you have to sneak past a guard post or cross an intersection and risk getting run over. It also allows for more immersion with the world, since you are constantly looking for hidden paths around potential fire fights.
-Traveling on foot suddenly makes the "everyone is hostile" complaint a strength, and adds to the realism. Just think: If you were an armed covert agent on a sabotage mission, would you be cruising around in a jeep on the main roads behind enemy lines? Of course you are going to have an armed encounter every two minutes if you do that. Sneaking around on foot and trying not to die, therefore, is a natural response to the AI's hostile programming, and it allows you to act as an actual lone mercenary probably would.
-Raiding objectives requires more a conservative approach. It's best to pick-off the snipers and rocket launchers first, then run to the outskirts of the objective and take out the patrols searching for you.
Playing on permanent death is pointless the first time around, but as someone who is trying it on their second playthrough, I recommend attempting it at some point.
― gozer, Thursday, 30 July 2009 23:41 (sixteen years ago)
normal difficulty? what about your buddy saves, do those count as dying. because, not to sound too aggro, i haven't died at all. i started playing on hard and it was... pretty hard.

― adult music person (Jordan), Thursday, 24 March 2011 20:35 (fifteen years ago)
I've made a start on it. Kind of relieved how similar it is to the original farcry/crysis - I was worried that they'd change it into a gung ho console shooter, but no, it's still basically Metal Gear FPS. Lots of sneaking and hiding, all looks amazing (it opens in a fucked up Battery Park and the views over the Hudson are beautiful).
― JimD, Monday, 28 March 2011 17:57 (fifteen years ago)
I still have to go back to Far Cry 2. It looked incredible but was just too damn hard for me.

― adult music person (Jordan), Monday, 28 March 2011 18:03 (fifteen years ago)
This is hard too.
Haven't tried multi yet. Apparently the team that did the whole multiplayer side of it are the same people who used to be Free Radical! So my expectations are raised.
― JimD, Monday, 28 March 2011 18:08 (fifteen years ago)
Huh, something kind of stupid keeps happening in this game. I go into an open area full of bad guys, spend half an hour clearing them out one by one, make my way over the the checkpoint then get killed and thrown back to where I started (which is pretty argh). But then I can't be arsed killing everyone again, so I just stealth my way over to the exit area and, um, finish the whole chunk in 2 minutes instead of 30. Feels like I could probably speed run this whole game in about 20 minutes total if I just chose not to bother actually fighting anyone.
― JimD, Friday, 1 April 2011 12:35 (fifteen years ago)
Bewildered C2 garnered such praise in the press. Nothing special about it, assuming you've played a FPS in the last 5-10 years or so.
― calstars, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 03:20 (fifteen years ago)
Finished this today. It seemed to get uglier and uglier the further in I got - more pop in, more jaggies. And then the final section is in a place that should give you some amazing views across the city, but they just fogged it all out. Maybe that doesn't happen on PC? But yeah, not such a gorgeous game really, beyond it's first couple of hours.
Game itself held my interest enough to get me to the end, but only just. Plot was nonsense, level design wasn't hugely inspired, but cloaking and sniping stayed consistently fun.

i have a thing about playing fps games like borderlands, stalker, crysis etc with a keyboard and mouse - love the way you can aim all precise rather than letting the xbox controller pad give a helping hand. however my pc is a few years old so it might only run far cry 3 at low spec. with that in mind, is it the kind of game that benefits from the precise aim system you get from a mouse, or does that not really apply? ie i find games like portal, splinter cell, batman, max payne etc are fine to play with the controller pad

To be fair, the only really douchey things are the characters, and they're written that way.

― adam, Thursday, 13 December 2012 22:27 (thirteen years ago)
yeah when i die i never know what's going to be saved. if i skin an animal, make something, and then die, it's usually gone. but then i did one of those 'wanted' missions and did a takedown on the target, promptly got shot in the head, and it counted as a successful mission.

“For example, GTA is a colonization game. You come to New York, you colonize New York. Most open world games function that way. Ezio comes to Rome and colonizes Rome. Though this seems more 90s than 80s. If it was a real 80s dumb game it would be two buff dudes shooting up South American jungles.

This is late 80s/early 90s VHS trash, the kind that the RedLetterMedia guys watch and mock every few weeks. The stuff that Carolco or Cannon put out and that MacGruber(the movie) openly mocked.
Duke Nukem is from the later era.

Here's a quicklook:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sXwkkf1OK4
The reviews are coming in positive, with the point being made that the game undercuts itself and tries to have it both ways by alternately playing it straight and then commenting on its own idiocy.
the fact that you can throw ninja stars to take out other dudes when doing close-up melee kills shows how dead-on the game can be, tho. I want the soundtrack.

Yeah, I'm downloading the game from Amazon tonight. Weird that the serial number won't activate the game on Steam, and uPlay is a dumb enough service not to have that option either.
― Hockey Drunk (kingfish), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 08:34 (thirteen years ago)
i liked it as an idea, but im not sure its going to hold together as a game. tbf, the demo is crazy short and basically cuts off in mid sentence. really funny though. shooting/aiming is pretty irritatingly unforgiving.

― precious bonsai children of new york (Jordan), Friday, 17 May 2013 00:48 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, the double bird shooting is part of the game. If you hit the melee attack button with no immediate target, it flips the bird. Keep hitting it and there you go.

― adam, Monday, 17 November 2014 14:45 (eleven years ago)
yeah it's pretty racist. not as hateful as eg gta5 (it's not gona stop me playing it) but yep it's peppered with lame dialogue & lazy writing

― adam, Monday, 8 December 2014 01:25 (eleven years ago)
i'm working my way through it at the moment on ps4. i loved far cry 3 and i feel like i should be enjoying this more than i am so far. i've put about eight hours into it, mostly just roaming around unlocking bell towers and raiding enemy compounds.
it's largely been avoiding the horrible story / characterisation pitfalls that annoyed me in fc3, thankfully, but i wish the gameplay had been updated a bit more along with the setting - it's very similar mechanically to fc3 which is making it a bit harder to love. helicopter / wingsuit / elephant adventures have undeniably been a lot of fun, though.
i think i might be getting tired of ubisoft's schtick - having also played watch_dogs and ac: black flag this year i've overdosed a bit on map unlocking, secret item uncovering, base-raiding and all the other stuff which is shared between their games.
― bizarro gazzara, Monday, 8 December 2014 11:14 (eleven years ago)
i never gelled with watch dogs and got bored halfway through black flag too. can kinda see this happening with fc4 but every time i get a bit weary they throw a new thing in that gets me going - the mountain missions are great for that. not quite as awesome as fc3 (and definitely not as much as blood dragon) but i'd say it's one of the better games from a pretty humdrum year
― NI, Monday, 8 December 2014 18:10 (eleven years ago)
not really interested because it seems so similar to FC3, which upon completing gave me a sense of 'huh, kinda wish i hadn't spent so many hours on that'.
i do love doing stealth takeovers of the bases, that's the only part that's tempting.
― festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 8 December 2014 18:15 (eleven years ago)
I was playing FC3 last night and I had a falling-through-the-world glitch happen. I was swimming to some treasure and when I looked up there was no land but I could see trees, they were just hovering in mid-air. Then the land started taking shape, but it looked like it was all transparent. I was stuck under the water, and my character was gasping for air, and it was really horrifying. I tried to get away but was still stuck, though with the land being all transparent, it was like I was a ghost or something. Eventually I feel through the ground and the sky appeared below me and the entire world was upside down. By this time the game was stuttering so I had to shut it off.
The stealth takeovers of bases is definitely the best part of these games. Too bad that once you do take over all the bases, there are no more enemies to fight, so you're just running around an open world with this massive arsenal and all your combat upgrades and have no one to fight.
― ©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 16:24 (eleven years ago)
there are couple of places where the enemies respawn - like the airfield, I think (haven't played it for ages so I might be wrong)

Fuck everything about this game but the gameplay. Fuck especially the 5+ minute idiotic fucking obnoxious garbage unskippable cutscenes that bookend every single fucking mission and the infuriating fucking radio DJ whose 15 minutes or so of unfunny obnoxious ninnying you're forced to hear over and over every fucking time you get into a fucking vehicle and that you cannot turn off or change the channel on. Who the fucking hell ever heard of a talk radio station in an open-world video game that you can't turn the channel on or even turn off and is playing in every single fucking vehicle. I would gladly pay $10 for DLC that removed every single narrative aspect of this goddamn game. Fuck u Ubisoft

The NPC spawn over and over with the same bloody skins. so youll be walking along a montana mountainside and walk past this same asian hiker guy 6 times in 2 minutes.
Its really buggy. And we're playing the PS4 versh.
Not too bad a game but the "David Koresh with cool tats" thing is a bit overcooked.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 23:27 (eight years ago)
a friend has Far Cry 5 and i played for a few hours on his PS4. it's pretty good but def more of the same. he is really into stealth takedowns of the bases which is something the series has grown to excel at.
i ended up buying Far Cry 2 on steam after hearing about it for years. it's kind of janky (had to bring all settings to medium in order to stop the CTD) but very atmospheric and a lot of fun. also a very different kind of game - no sneak melee kills and bullets can pierce most walls (being hastily constructed shacks in war-torn Africa), meaning you can't rely on cover for too long, you have to keep moving, which is pretty cool. the map is now one of my favorites of all time.
― Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 3 May 2018 12:02 (eight years ago)
fc5 has a mechanic where u do stuff in a region to fill up a meter, when the meter fills up you can do the boss fight mission. rather, you HAVE to do the boss fight mission as the game pulls you out of whatever amusing open world shit you were doing and throws you into a long corridor shooter mission that you can't get out of. i haven't booted the game up since it did that and i probably never will tbh.
a shame b/c it was a mindless good time til then, in the ubi tradition.
― adam, Thursday, 3 May 2018 12:16 (eight years ago)
Far Cry 2 (Steam) ended up solving my CTD and graphics glitches & crashes by setting it to use DirectX10 instead of 9. plays very smooth and looks like a dream. i love the varied weather, the wind storms that rustle up. the tall grasses you can hide in. this BOTW and MGS3 for top 3 videogame GOAT (Grass of All Time)
there are not as many wild animals as the new games however, which kinda sucks cos you are in Africa and there could be some cool stuff. also i have lost so many missions due to enemies just pulling up in a car and running me over. it sucks, you can be 10 mins into a mission and a car comes out of nowhere and insta kills you back to the last save.
― Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 21:09 (eight years ago)
the diamond hunting is a lot of fun. all over the map there are suitcases with diamonds (upgrade material) to find. often they are hidden in an out of the reach place you have to jump to or something and it turns into a little side puzzle where you are figuring out where to go and how to get to them.
― Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 10 May 2018 00:19 (eight years ago)
in the better moments it definitely captures that Chuck Norris 80s movies, sliding under bullets while you single-handedly waste an army of mercs in the jungle.
