From t'other thread:

How and/or where did you get this WoW trial Trayce? I want one.

A friend who has the game gave me a slip with a 10 day trial serial on it. I think it comes with each bought copy? DIsconcerting that you still have to sign up with a credit card and name and address and all that :/ But apparently it wont charge me unless I now go out and buy a proper gane and sign up fully. Which, to be honest, I'm wavering on doing at this stage. Sims 2 nightlife just came out, I shall be distracted ;)

ONE OF US ONE OF US

My priest is now lvl 22. If you combined all of the levels of the various characters I've started on assorted servers into one character, I would be at lvl 159. (Conversely, adding up the xp would probably put me at lvl 55, ha.)

Anyone who wants to jump in on some good-natured PvP action with me should roll up an Alliance character on Deathwing and msg Teufelstod or Grinz.

I haven't played with regularity since May or so. I lost interest, and now I sorta feel too left behind to get back into it? I don't think any of my friends play anymore either, except for this one dude in an SA guild.

sux2bu (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 02:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Haha I'm not even playing any more. I cancelled my account, so that I'd actually get anything done about moving to London. Then I got laid off in work before I could quit, which means more money and time than I'd planned on. So the first thing I did was think "Hey, my cancellation doesn't take effect for four days!". I did little else for the next four days, which was fun but doesn't make me want to renew my account until I'm settled in to new flat + new job in London.

Actually being on when your time runs out is strange, they give you warnings starting from 30 minutes out up to 1 minute 45, 1 minute 30, 1 minute 15, 1 minute... And then nothing happens. You can play for as long as you want, provided you don't log out :) I spent the time bagging Broken Tooth as a pet (attack speed 1.0!).

UPDATE: I hit level 48 last night after a month of desultory grinding! Also this past week I discovered the Arathi Basin battleground!!!! SO MUCH MORE FUN THAN THE REST OF THE GAME!!!!!! Plus getting 2250XP per game if you win = nice; that's what actually ended up levelling me through the latter half of 47 as all of the upper-40s quests are bitches to solo, esp as a warrior.

I haven't looked at Warsong Gulch at all; just from the description I get the sense that it would totally suck to be a warrior there.

lol xbox is hueg (Adrian Langston), Monday, 31 October 2005 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

First off, THAT IS THE GREATEST PICTURE KNOWN TO MAN. The vaguely disquieted looks of the people in line!

Secondly, both of my coworkers who play are torked off by the new level cap. Personally, I'm glad that I spent all of my time fucking around with lvl-20something toons and didn't bother grinding to 60 and then blowing weeks on getting epic gear.

Dan ("Gnome, huh?") Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 October 2005 22:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Bear in mind this is due for Holidays 2006. Getting torked off about something a year away seems dumb.

Also that is the greatest picture known to man.

Some people were suggesting that the new Alliance race will be Centaurs/Dryads, and some people were suggest this was a dumb idea, because what would they do for mounts? I think this is a brilliant idea, if instead of mounts they get rollerskates.

Alliance get their heads handed to them in any Arathi Basin game that I've seen, unless 4 or 5 of the horde just don't turn up. I suspect this is because population imbalance means that any horde who wants to play BG all day can do that. Or maybe all these 12-year-olds aren't the untapped strategic resource that they appear.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 02:22 (thirteen years ago) link

On my server, it's all completely dependany on who's online; there is a core of lvl 40-49 Alliance who are very good at AB... and a whole bunch who think that zerging from base to base racking up PVP kills but not actually taking any resources is a good strategy. I call those people "dumbasses". The days when I stumble into a battleground with 3 people who get what the game is about and 11 "dumbasses" are sad, bad days.

Some people were suggesting that the new Alliance race will be Centaurs/Dryads, and some people were suggest this was a dumb idea, because what would they do for mounts? I think this is a brilliant idea, if instead of mounts they get rollerskates.

That is totally, absolutely brilliant.

My friends that are playing this need to stop now...

sleep (sleep), Sunday, 20 November 2005 02:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Alterac Valley (the new PVP battleground) is interesting in that it's the most like old Warcraft. The other two (Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin) are Capture the Flag and Zone Control respectively (I don't know the usual FPS name for the seond one, but you probably get the idea). In AV, you get quests to do (which obviously you take part in at the expense of dealing with the small army pouring towards you from the other side), which can improve the armor of non-player units on your side, or create a force of wolfriders, or summon a massive elemental to rampage down the screen. The main drive of the game is to advance into your opponents territory, destroying or occupying specific sites along the way. Laying siege to bunkers and towers helps eventually with the main goal of defeating the enemy general, who loses a defensive unit per building taken. The tactical advantage of occupying a graveyard, allowing your players to respawn there after death, and denying the opposing army the same priviledge, is fairly clear.

To see one of the reasons this falls down, look at a change made a few patches back to the other two BGs: They used to group together people by their level: 21-30, 31-40 etc all the way up to 60 (the level cap). This was changed to 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60. For a good reason too: There's a pileup effect at 60, so with each patch Blizzard, mindful of the monthly fee, has introduced more content aimed at that range, with more and shinier rewards for the characters (there's a bit of your brain that would be soothed by watching someone count to 100, and it's this bit, among others, that WoW is aimed at). As a result, the gap between two players, one who turned 60 last week, and one three months ago, is at least as big as that between a lvl 50 and lvl 59. This is also true for most of the milestones: at 10,20, etc characters gain new skills, and the way they play the game changes. Not least among these, the lvl40 and lvl60 mounts, ridable animals which boost your speed by 60% and 100%. But AV only has one range: 51-60. One or two of the above quests are suitable for the lower levels, but they only take half an hour at most, and AV games are LONG, stretching from 4 to 8 or 10 hours. So most of the time, quite a few of the players on the field are having no real effect at all. I've seen a lvl 60 kill a lvl 51 in considerably less time than it took to type (or read!) this sentence.

The other reason is related, which is that without a full team of lvl60s, the final assault can be near impossible. Apart from the respawning guards, the other players pour out of their final graveyard at a considerable rate. The majority of games (on my server) aren't won by completing the aims, but by attrition in the Alliance's favour. There's a safeguard to make smaller games possible without stacking the deck in favour of the larger faction: the maximum number of players in a team is 40, but the game can start when there's 30 ready. After that, the players are only added in pairs, and only if ther teams are already level. So if one of the Horde drops out, the vacancy has to be filled and someone else has to enter the queue before an Alliance player can be added. But this doesn't cover what happens when someone drops out and there's no-one to replace them. Eventually (we are here talking at 2-3am for a game that started at around 6-7pm) the number of Horde players drops below 10, and the Alliance win by default.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Hahaha um, I did NOT hit 60. My rested bonus ran out and my grinding came to a CRASHING HALT last week; also I've been busy *gasp* GOING TO PARTIES AND CONCERTS WITH MY WIFE so I haven't had the chance to really play.

I did hit 52, though. A WINNER IS ME!

I also still suck at PvP. Bah.

While my main bulds up rested bonus, I've been levelling up my other PvP toons:

- lvl 26 human priest (enchanter/skinner)
- lvl 13 gnome warlock (engineer/miner)
- lvl 8 night elf druid (alchemist/herbalist)

I think my warlock is going to end up being a BAD ASS. Also, when my priest gets mind control, LOOK OUT.

Okay i am thinking of trying this out. I generally like teh rpg of any sort but the only mmorpg i've tried is ultima online very early on in it's life and i didn't like it much.

I didn't like the fact that practically nothing was going on at all in the world and there was a huge focus on clans/alliances and doing things as part of a party. I hated the whole partying up thing mostly because i didn't like the ppl very much.

Twist my arm or tell me to try city of heroes instead, or ignore me at yr leisure.

MY guild and I have been playing the 1.9 test server rather vigorously, and i can safely say this will be the patch to crush all patches.

two weeks pass...
jeffrey:

There's still a pretty strong group component, particularly once you get to higher levels; the good thing is that while it helps to be part of a guild/clan, you don't have to be. I can't compare this game to any others because it's the only MMORPG I've played but I love it.

Toon update:

Teufelstod (dwarven warrior) is on the cusp of hitting 54, meaning that the 40 gold I dumped on an armor set will soon be money well spent.

Grinz (human priest) is at 27 right now. I need to do some Stockades runs with him and just find more groups in general.

Deezil (night elf druid) is at 16 right now; when I get around to it I will get his water form.

Lunnil (gnome warlock) is at 15. He's sitting in Westfall right now waiting to pwn some goretusks.

Tolenar (human paladin) is at level 4. I started him just to get a feel for the class before the patch.

Engelfeuer (dwarven hunter) is at 6. I had a hunter on another server and that class was fun, so this is my other spare time wait-for-rested-bonus toon.

Dan (Challenge!) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 12 December 2005 21:47 (thirteen years ago) link

good thing is that while it helps to be part of a guild/clan, you don't have to be

I get the impression that when you get to the larger dungeons with 20-40 people, your chances with a pick-up group go sharply downhill.

Given that you're not that bothered about regularly grouping with the same people, why all Alliance?

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 02:00 (thirteen years ago) link

It's more accessible and streamlined than any other MMORPG that came before it. It has a lot of depth without being particularly complex, and the many intricacies of every level of gameplay will generally reveal themselves to you in ways that aren't overwhelming.

They're all like that. There's a fair list of things you can choose when selecting your character, but body type, apart obviously from species and sex, isn't one. More obvious on the ladeez: an imposing piece of armor on the men is often a metal push-up bra on the women.

I still really love the class (and the changes made in 1.7 meant that me+my pet was always in the top 2 damage dealers in any raid), but I'd finished every quest in the game apart from the ones in the later instances. My guild's good, and I enjoy playing with them, but all that's left is PVP grinding, raid instance grinding, or rep grinding. Also I need to get a job :)

Okay, I have just discovered The Joy Of Farming (ie, taking your lvl 55 character into the Deadmines over and over and over again, alternating between selling off swag at the AH and shipping 'mats off to the enchanter toon). If it wasn't so hard to get to (and it wasn't camped all to be damned) I'd be farming the Scarlet Monestary, too.

HINT: If you are not a high level farming a lowbie instance, pick mining/skinning as your professions. Every animal you kill = $$$, plus every node you mine and smelt = $$$, PLUS (this is important) every abandoned, looted animal corpse you find = $$$$$.

You can switch to a crafting profession later on once you've actually got the cash to support it.

Dan (Hold Onto That Feeling) Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 29 January 2006 01:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I logged onto my warrior on Friday just in time to see a gigantic exodus from the guild I'd joined! Apparently there was a gigantic amount of bitching and arguing going on in the website forum (which I never read) that led to the original founders of the guild deciding to disband the entire thing.

Dan (Hahaha Oops) Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 29 January 2006 21:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Haha, my guild had a huge big fight that caused someone to leave over an argument about paladins being awful. I hope i never turn into that person.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I had a guild break up during one of my months off because the bossman was just being a paranoid loon, who responded to some people leaving by addding more and more, until the guild that was 80 turned into 200, mostly jackasses.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 01:01 (thirteen years ago) link

My coworker and I are considering jumping to a low population server and starting our own guild. I kind of don't want to do all of the attendant scheduling/websiting/foruming that people now associate with guilds, though.

Actually I need to interact with my new guild more, they seem to be much cooler than my old one.

Dan (Stop Soloing Everything, Dan) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Can you move characters between servers?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Sometimes they will open up character transfer from crowded servers to low population servers; recently they've blocked new character creation on my server for accounts who don't already have accounts there, so I'm guessing character transfer is only a few weeks away.

I wouldn't want to start over because a) I'd have no gold; b) I'd have to grind up through the 30s again and that SUCKED.

Before this stupid game I probably hadn't played a game for more than 50 hours, ever. I think I've logged 800 in this thing. At least 60 of those were over the past 8-9 days.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 14:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm at level 31 and I'm getting that "why do I bother" feel - I didn't join a guild (I play too irregularly), I'm sick of quests ("Collect 15 centaur ears" - why? There'll just be 15 new Centaurs milling around when I'm done), and I love the battlegrounds, but going to a capital city, getting in a queue, milling around, finally getting bored and going back to somewhere that I can grind to the next level and then JUST as the bird lands getting called up for the battle - and then the battle lasts all of five minutes, either because nobody showed up to play the Horde side at Arathi or everybody showed up to slaughter us in Warsong Gulch - and I'm stuck at the dumb capital again, is getting tiring.

Just my two cents. I'll probably still subscribe 'til I make it to 60 though.

Also enjoy it while you can - in order to make those dungeons less of a grind (and get raids working away on the high-level instances), the quality of drops in Stratholme, Scholomance and the Blackrocks are going to go up, but the level cap is going down: Strat, Scholo and Blackrock Depths will be capped at 5-man, and Blackrock Spire will be capped at 10-man.

This is from the patchnotes for 1.10 which is out on the test realms now. Just above the line about all exp for quests you do at lvl 60 being converted into gold, which will cause hell if it's applied retroactively, and cause hell if it's not.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:45 (thirteen years ago) link

my friend wrote a totally awesome review of WoW:

A gay timesink for the whole family.

World of Warcraft is basically a massively multiplayer online role playing game, in these modern high tech days of internet downloading and uh uh uh (UH!!!!!!!!!!!) file PSP to peer sharing trades, where you walk to an area, hit enemies until they die, and watch a little bar go up. If you're lucky, there's a 1 in 1000 chance you will get a cool item with a name that implies you will use it to beat the shit out of more monsters, and you'll use it for the next 20 levels because you won't find anything better. In Korea, you can make 50 games that do that and nothing else, and I guess it sells.

Blizzard has taken the MMO thing and touched it up with some original stuff and put it in one of their gayer, more ridiculous cliched fantasy worlds, Warcraft. This "universe" was previously used for having your group of dudes move to your other group of dudes and hit them until they're dead. That was all changed in Warcraft 3, where the game was suddenly about the evil forces of Zul'gruth joining with the dark lord of Glork'plurn Bonegrip, and how you as the leader of Zul'Gurub Hive'ashi Kel'Thuzad Ner'Zul Zul'Farrak Flalf'hr'kllfffl Gluf'Blfbl Fs'ssaaaaa Nura'fa'Alra Lamarr Alexander #2. And then you switch to the orcs and must save your orc friends from the demonic forces of Zlar'kluurk's undead WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS GAYNESS. The entire game's story is summed up as "a bunch of consonants separated by apostrophes." World of Warcraft takes place in this universe (minus destroying enemy fortifications which would've been awesome), but is really more like Diablo 2. This has some pretty positive aspects. If you liked Diablo 2 at all you will like many things in World of Warcraft. And then Blizzard went and fucked it up, and owes all of us a refund and rebate and sign our posts and blue please read FOR GOD'S SAKE PLEASE OH GOD I HATE YOU BLIZZARD FOREVER

Pros:
It's the best MMO out there. It's basically like Diablo 3. It's the most polished and optimized-for-gamers game. The well-rested system is a great idea for helping the more casual gamers. You can move while in combat, making the game less about watching your dude's arm swing as a monster's arm swings at you. You can sit to rest like normal but if you move forward it pulls you right out of sitting mode so you don't have to wait for the "getting up" animation like a dumbbell if enemies start hitting you. There's like a hundred little details like this that help make the game easier to get into and play.

Even the most basic of combat classes require some depth of play. The warrior class isn't just about hitting the enemy until they're dead, but about picking the right skills at the right time, and changing your battle stances to get access to more defensive skills or harder-hitting skills. Bloo blee blah stuff like that. Every race and class is carefully balanced properly so even their weaknesses will be offset by bonus strengths. Maybe a mage can only wear cloth armor, but their spells are extremely powerful and they can disable enemy players or monsters with a bunch of skills. Stuff like that. Hey that's............ that's not bad. :(

Cons:

Unfortunately, all this is still 10 years behind what MMOs should really be at right now. I sure could make a better game!

The biggest flaw of MMOs period (until the other biggest flaw period, mentioned later in the review) is that they require all your time even to get the most minor pointless things done. Either doing quests or going from one area to another, or sorting your inventory or crafting items. Or all of the above at the same time, which means you'll probably forget about some of them in the process. The game needs a todo list. Just another thing I would include if I could make my own MMO.

In WOW(craft) it's so bad that even when you have finished a bunch of quests and want to stop, you still have to keep going for another 20 minutes to a half hour, just to get back to the town and cash in the quests and maybe bank items and repair your shit and sell some junk and auction this, pick up this mail, talk to this dude, cash in something else, take the NEXT part of the quest yap yap yappity yap jizz trap. My brother came up with a great idea that would've solved some of that, which would be to mail your quest items (like the 12 enchanted wolf cocks for some fetch quest) to the NPC in question and have that count towards cashing in the quest. Again just another way that my brudda and I could make a better game than World of Warcraft.

Story: 0/10
Stupid. They don't even realize, IN THEIR OWN GAME, that they made the alliance (humans, dwarves, faggots) the bad guys who are secretly ruled by an evil dragon thingy. Meanwhile, the horde, which would stereotypically be the bad guys (orcs, badass cow dudes, TROLLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!TO THE CHURCH) are actually good guys who for the most part are trying to survive in a world of crazy evil humans secretly controlled by demons and dragons and shit, and all the mysterious OLD EVILS OF OLD(E) that pop up apparently every fuckin month on this retarded universe planet.

Even with the orc side apparently being the good guys, they still put Undead on the horde team, which is basically a bunch of rotting skeletons with skin. Who the fuck would want to play that as a game character? I can imagine wanting to crush it into a bunch of dust with like one hit when you're not even trying, but to put it in the game as a playable race is stupid. All of the undead quests revolve around poisoning dogs and cats, and friendly NPCs. That's not even an exaggeration, there are several uninterrupted quests you get from undead land (who's capitol city is the most poorly laid out and hardest to get around in the whole game) where you slog through several incredibly boring, time-wasting fetch quests to get items to make a "potion" that you "test" on a pet frog, dog, cat, tauren whatever the FUCK. And they die. They don't even learn to fly or use their magic crystal collar to tell you how to use gold to fix their UFO, they just drop dead, and then the dumb undead bitch who made you waste about 5 hours to do this quest (which only gives you a few hundred XP and like 5 silver) says "aaaaaaaa hahaha it works perfectly, also after 10,000 years I'm free." There was even a quest where you gather more of the same old "insert relevance here" item which could be anything as if it even fuckin mattered, and you take it back to find a cure for some poor poisoned tauren chick (FRIENDLY COW BABE). After traveling across continents and countries and running past like 200 hostile enemies to test some tide pools in a distant sea, and then take this junk all the way back, the "cure" is tested on the cow chick and she drops dead, and then the undead guy says something about "it worked better than I expected, I will prepare more samples." This shit doesn't even make sense in a fucking retarded MADE UP game world. But thanks for making me feel like I wasted my time to help the gayest horde race in the game, THANKS BLIZZARD (GIVE REFUND PZL). It also makes me think that they only put the undead race on the horde side to pad out their list of playable races.

At the same time, one of the stock bad guys inherently hostile to both factions is the "scourge." Apparently no one at Blizzard fact checked to find out that the "scourge" is the undead units from Warcraft 3. So why is the undead on the same side that's fighting itself? There is probably some ridiculous and boring backstory explaining this in the game, full of names with unnecessary apostrophies, and a lack of vowels.

Races: 2/10

There are four on each faction side, so that's.................... eight? IT'S EIGHT!

Since most of the races are basically the same, aside from some very minor racial bonus skills and stat boosts, which are barely worth SHIT, they can still be ranked by how cool they are (such as how they look, their mounts, their emotes or whatever). The rank goes like this, from best to worst: taurens, humans, orcs, trolls, dwarves, undead, gnomes, night elves. So taurens, the cow people, are basically the coolest race in the game (and also the biggest, hot), as they were in Warcraft 3 where they were introduced. Humans are the best alliance race, and female humans are the hottest female race while male taurens are the hottest male race which isn't even gay or nothin because taurens are so objectively great (not that there's anything wrong with that). And of course night elves are the biggest bunch of buttfucking faggots, possibly in game history. Anyone who voluntarily (or even involuntarily) plays a night elf is a horrible player and a horrible person; the kind of scumfucking loser you cringe at even imagining, who is most likely such a total mouthbreathing dweebdork that they draw horrible fanart of themselves as their night elves and cosplay as them, and get into huge fights with other players over ridiculous miniscule shit, and are obnoxiously whiny. I'm just assuming this, because I haven't known any night elf players, but I'm objectively right. Also Blizzard should add a feature in the game where you can dump a night elf's books.

Some people (and by people I mean "fags") play this for the storyline, which is retarded. Even if you were taking this game's "lore" seriously for even a minute, you should be snapped out of it by the time you are confronted with the ridiculous races, like the trolls being stereotypical Jamaicans, which I don't even understand. It's like, they're trolls........... from Jamaica? Do they have a Jamaica from wherever these trolls were from? Is there a Jamaica universe that the trolls (and actual Jamaicans ON OUR PLANET) have accidentally come through? And then the taurens, while awesome cow people (especially if you are a gay furry who likes to "yiff" with your "kits" or grab their neck fur in your sexy jaws or whatever retarded shit you do) are also stereotypical Native American Indians with totems and beliefs in ridiculous spirits, the only difference between Native Americans and taurens is that the mystical Earth Mother nature spirits and shit in World of Warcraft are supposed to be real, and the Native American spirits are NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. And then Orcs are Klingons I guess. They couldn't even be a stereotype of a real human ethnicity, like the other horde races. And then the night elves, which are stereotypes of "buttfucking faggots" and anime fans who think that anime is real.

Multiplayer: 4/10

The ultimate failing of MMOs, besides them being gay time sinks, is that you have to play them with other players. That means you'll constantly run into people, even at level 60, who seem to have no clue what they are doing, ever, because even at the end game they are still somehow dumb newbs. What's worse is that as an MMO there are hundreds of other people running around the same world as you, therefore justifying the idea of having to be in raid groups to get anything done at the end of the game. This is completely impossible and pointless in "pugs" or "pick up groups," which are the random retarded assfuck newbs you find around the game. Most people do these dungeons within guilds, and only in guilds. So that means everyone in the end game guild with like 500 members will do the cool 40 player dungeons, and everyone else has to sit around with their thumb in their ass. You absolutely cannot play with just your 6 or 7 pals you know personally, because you'll still need another 3 or 4 or 20 dumbasses to fill spaces in the party. And usually the newbs will get your entire raid party killed by running off alone and drawing in the raid strength enemies, and some warrior loots priest equipment that becomes unsharable when it's picked up. Then the newbs get screamed at and everyone starts yelling at each other instead of playing. Blizzard hasn't thought of a way to get around this. I guess I shouldn't blame Blizzard for not being me.

Night Elves Being Gay: 10/10!
I'm not sure how this is possible, but there might be some super secret coding in the game that makes you hate night elves if you play on the horde side. Some of the only backstory in the game that isn't worthless is that the taurens (cow dudes) have a deep hatred of the night elves, going back many many years. And after playing as a tauren, because they're the best race in the game, I ended up hating night elves. Especially since most night elves, aside from looking really stupid with their 2 foot ears and shit, seem to be played by the kind of person who runs around LARPing in Wal-Mart flapping their vampire capes, collecting Nightmare Before Christmas figurines, getting into fist fights with their friends for bending the corners of their Yugioh cards, thinking they can turn invisible IN REAL LIFE, while roleplaying in the game and talking to other players like "o thou hast found thine fishing trainer" AND THAT IS THEM TALKING ABOUT THEIR OWN CHARACTER IN THE THIRD PERSON (wow that's bad). Usually they are part of the motherfuckers and will steal your fuckin CLOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG. Narnia.

Usually night elves are the people you see on PVP servers killing horde players 20 or 30 levels below them thinking it's just because they are so strong and badass, until someone their own level shows up and they immediately cloak, and will stay there for an hour or two waiting for a chance to kill newbs again. Unless they are found out, then they start bunny hopping around in a circle like a bunch of Kansas City FAGGOTS, which doesn't even help while the other player pounds them into hamburger, causing the night elf player to flail his noodle arms at his computer while going REEEEEE, cranking his linkin park CDs, all without retaining a single shred of dignity. But I guess I should not judge people who just want a Second Life............... AS A FAGGOT.

Crippling Failures: (this doesn't need a rating, but 10/10)
Besides the game simply ending when you get to level 60 if you happen to be playing with just a few of your friends, until you get to level 40 and can finally buy a mount, you will walk everywhere. Miles and miles of just plain walking. Bind a key to autowalk if you don't want to hold down the "forward" key for 10 straight minutes. Diablo 2 was known as a timesink because it kept you wanting to play more and more. This is a timesink because it forces you to protract your actions over a giant amount of time. Want to do a quest? Set aside a full hour, no matter how small the reward or pointless the objective is. They throw so many retarded fetch quests at you to further waste your time, where they want you to collect 20 slitherlurk slaghurfs toenails or whatever the fuck pointless item, but you'll usually only get one of them for every 5 kills. Add it all up and it's a half hour to collect pointless fetch quest item #324324978324890sdpfsdioatr what's the fuckin POINT ANYMORE

You can craft items in this game, which is helpful until about level 50 when all the items you'll really want will require farming 40 player raid zones for months to gather a bunch of rare random drop items, and you will need to find a way to get your profession skill PAST THE END GAME MAXIMUM to get these items. If you do this, you can't get into battlegrounds, leaving you almost nothing you could simply play alone or in small groups. When you hit 60, unless you know about 40 other people who are going to do those giant end game raid instances, you are completely done with the game and have nothing else to do, unless you want to fish forever, or grind battlegrounds for hours each day for a month to get higher ranks just to get a black kodo or better armor. Armor you will do what with? More NOTHING? Catch fish? Try to keep getting BETTER armor? Wait, you could fight a big purple dragon! Or an old ancient evil that is rising to destroy the world much in the same way the last 20 old(e) evil(e)s of old(e) did in most of the dungeons you do from level 40 on even though if one world, even a fantasy one, was being attacked by that many giant powerful armies you'd think that at least one of them would win or the world would explode or something. What is the fucking point? WHAT'S THE POOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNT

Since the game has been out for a year, most of the end game quest lines involve word of mouth through the servers to figure out when to do them, where, and for what. No one does this, so the game requires a bunch of wiki sites to progress, making any actual text within the game, which could've been used to oh I dunno actually point out what you should do, completely pointless.

Another dumb thing about MMOs is they'll always have some pointless block of text supposedly describing your quest. If they do properly, it'll tell you at least a general direction where you should go, what you should be killing and/or collecting, and where you should go to cash in your completed quest. Some quests don't, and require you to go on one of those dumb wiki sites that suggest you install the plugin to help create macros to use the site within the game until you realize you have just become a total fucking loser writing macros and having plugins that farm information off wiki sites JUST TO PLAY THIS GAME.

M1 Rating: 0/10
NO FUCKIN M1. No ragdolls. No gravity gun. No blowing up buildings. No mechs stomping through a forest as guitars dunt. Instead you must craft snowglobes and deliver them to a table in under 0 seconds. Aaaaaaaaaand....... go.

The better MMO I came up with while playing WOW that would fix all the problems currently inherent in MMOs: 10/10!
Yep, I'm pretty good.

Dan (Farmer Brown) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, the impression that I got is that farming for the Tier 0 just got wiped out by the new patch (Straholme / Scholomance / Blackrock Depths are 5-man max, Upper and Lower Blackrock Spire are 10-man). So it seems like everything is tuned right, in that you need a good 10-man party for the 10-mans, 20 for the 20, 40 for the 40s, you can't just saddle up with some lame-os and kick the crap out of the Baron 5 times a day until he coughs up. And by all accounts getting a good team all the way through one of the 20 or 40-man dungeons is an incredible feeling (I know it is when you get 5 on-form chars in a standard instance). But then you realise that there's one guy who drops all the legpieces for everyone, and one guy who drops all the headpieces, and so it'll take roughly 40 attempts for them to drop you what you want, and it's not like you can head back in after you finish with nothing, it'll be another week.

(Though a good run with a good team is still fun, and I do regret that I quit the day before my guild was going to have it's first attempt at UBRS)

World of Warcraft to the Big Screen
Source: Variety
May 9, 2006

Warner Bros.-based Legendary Pictures has picked up film rights to adapt the popular fantasy video game franchise World of Warcraft and will develop the project with game publisher Blizzard Entertainment, which is owned by Vivendi.

While the "Warcraft" franchise has been around for more than a decade, the most recent iteration, the megahit online title "World of Warcraft," has transformed the video game industry.

Unlike most games, where players pay $50 once and play until they're done, more than 6 million people around the world pay $14.99 per month to participate in the multiplayer game.

Legendary put up half the money for Warners' Batman Begins and the upcoming Superman Returns.

I've been very angry at my computer because if I go do an instance, I get booted off the server for no discernable reason. The only plus side to this is that the inability to grind/quest for my Valor set meant I had time to go grind for Timbermaw faction.

I'm just happy I had the background downloader working over the past week so I alread had 75% of it by the time release day rolled around. The floating fortresses are BADASS.

I guess I really need to start focusing on my lvl 60 as opposed to levelling alts; I still only have 4 pieces of the Valor set and my PVP rank has never been above Seargent. I think I'm more suited towards casters than melee classes, though, at least in parties. (Also my priest is just more fun to play.)

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 15:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Good idea having it running beforehand. 98% done now, shouldn't be long till i'm seeing some badass floating fortresses for myself :)

Jeffrey only needs his gloves to complete his beaststalker set and is rank 7 in pvp now i think. I'm only at lvl 33 with my warlock so far, so such things are a long way off.

I'm more suited to casters to i believe. Although i love hunters most in solo play.

alan w (uzumaki), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 16:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Currently my warrior is lvl 60 and languishing from neglect because I'm not really digging the endgame content/time commitment. My priest is 46 and my hunter is 29 and both are a buttload more fun to play.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 July 2006 13:28 (thirteen years ago) link

I am totally sure what endgame content means but YaY! You've been not putting the time in? For shame. Is it possible to get pix of these characters?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 21 July 2006 13:36 (thirteen years ago) link

i am bored with my level 60 hunter, 40 men raids where i feel like i am making no impact at all and last for four or five hours aren't my idea of fun so i started working on a huge stable of alts. i'm really enjoying shamans and druids, seem to play really differently from the other classes. The Gates of Ahn'Qiraj opened yesterday on my server. Lag ensued. Also 100 foot tall egyptian god type things. fun.

Dxy (Danny), Sunday, 23 July 2006 23:18 (thirteen years ago) link

100 foot tall egyptian god type things sounds like the greatest things ever! How do you find time for all the alts (alternative characters yes?)? Do you get email updates?

I also wondered: can your character die or does it just level down? Can your character be attacked if your offline or do you just disappear?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 24 July 2006 10:02 (thirteen years ago) link

You disappear if you're offline. Also you die all the time but you can resurrect with minimal penalties (ie, your gear gets beat up and you have to pay to get it repaired).

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah right, so can you log out but still have your character travel to a point or do you have to be online for them to move from a to b. IF so, no wonder people lose so much time.

Are workshops hard to find? Would there be a risk that when you're killed your attacker can grab your gear?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 09:22 (thirteen years ago) link

You can't travel while you're logged off. Logging off effectively removes you completely from the world and you come back in the spot where you last were.

People can't loot your gear when you get killed like they could in other online games.

If by "workshops" you mean "someone to fix your gear", it's usually pretty easy; any NPC selling armor or weapons can also fix your gear, plus if you take the engineering profession you can eventually make a repair robot that can fix your gear for you.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 10:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Your ghost will appear next to a Spirit Guide in the nearest town when you die - you have a choice of going to find your body (with the penalties involved) or being resurrected there and then, which means your armor takes another battering (though there's usually someone around to fix it) and you feel ill for ~10 minutes.

Also the penalties only apply to death by monsters/the environment. If you're killed by other players, your armor is fine (though if it happens too often, there's a delay in resurrection). This is due to the dedicated PvP areas being a bit of a killathon, as you'd imagine.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 11:24 (thirteen years ago) link

The rez penalty gets applied regardless of who killed you, though.

Should we go into classes/professions or just link wowwiki?

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 12:50 (thirteen years ago) link

God no! Thanks for all the answers. I was only curious about travel and what happened when you died. Now all I want are images of things in the game that allow me to imagine this all! GIS be damned, it can't beat people who play the game trying to convince me how great it is/was!

100 foot tall egyptian things a must :) but I'll GIS those for now.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 13:25 (thirteen years ago) link

The rez penalty gets applied regardless of who killed you, though.

It's been a while, but I thought you didn't get rez sickness in Battlegrounds, which is what I meant to say.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 14:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, battlegrounds are different, yes; as far as world PvP is concerned, you still get TEH SICKIES.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 16:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Needle back in vein now - my old Horde guild managed (by dint of not splitting up) to become the biggest on the server in the year that I've been gone. They're having a recruitment drive "We're looking for 1 hunter and 2 warlocks, must be lvl 60, equipment up to Blackwing Lair spec", so it should be amusing to get in as a lvl 6 druid.

some highlights:

While fighting the Renegade, Cartman uses Mocking Blow. This special attack meant to draw a hostile NPC's attention has little effect on a human controlled enemy. Dialogue hints that Cartman is a warrior, although when his screen is shown it is clear that he is actually a Rogue; which would make his weilding of a two-handed mace impossible.

Crushing an enemy's head into a bloody pulp as depicted in the final fight is impossible in the game.

hi dere World of Starcraft

There goes my idea of introducing the Starcraft races as a third faction into WoW with completely different classes (iow, the current classes with different names).

(On the plus side, I'm almost head-to-toe in Karazhan gear! *squeee*)

Mordechai, you posted when I went on vacation so I never saw this! What server are you on? My guild on Deathwing is currently killing Hydross and Solarian; they worked on A'lar last night but I couldn't log on to join in the fun.

I'm posting the following here instead of on the game-related lolz thread due to its specificity: http://www.war-tools.com/?p=vt&i=44600

three weeks pass...

I realise this is a ludicrous thing to be doing in 2008 and all, but: I am about to install my first ever WOW 14 day trial! Give me three character creation tips please.

JimD, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 10:24 (eleven years ago) link

WELCOME TO CRACKVILLE, POPULATION: 7,000,000

1. Do you have friends who play already? If so, pick the side that they play. If not, as far as poking around is concerned I highly recommend creating a human character (if Alliance) or undead character (if Horde). The human starting area is well-positioned right in the middle of the map and gives you easy access to the rest of the map and the undead are just uberstrong.

2. Most classes are gear-dependant, as the various stat bonuses on things will increase your health/damage output/healing output (depending on class of course). However, some classes are WAY more gear dependant than others; in general, if you pick a physical damage class (warrior, rogue, hunter, paladin), you will find yourself in much more of a gear bind in the later stages of the game than if you picked a magic damage class (mage, warlock, priest, shaman, druid). This isn't that big of a consideration in the early stages of the game, but as you start levelling it will become more important as you figure out what your favored playstyle is.

- Do you want to be a tank, soaking up damage and getting monsters to focus their attention on you so your party can burn them down? If so, create a warrior.
- Do you want to put out tons of damage up close and personal? Create a rogue.
- Do you like keeping others alive? If so, create a priest, shaman, paladin or druid.
- Do you like killing things from a distance with burst damage? Create a mage.
- Do you want a pet that can keep monsters off of you while you kill them? Create a warlock or hunter.

3. Each class has three different talent trees and can be specced in many ways to do many different things. You can create a damage-heavy warrior or priest, a paladin tank, a druid tank, etc etc etc. With that in mind, don't be afraid to create more than one character and play around with them until you find the one that you enjoy the most. You can create up to... nine? (I think) characters on a server, and I believe overall one account can have a total of 50 character spread out across different servers. Be aware, though, that if you are on a PvP server, all of your characters have to be of the same faction.

There are tons of websites out there with more detailed character creation tips, usually with aims towards running high-end instances or participating in PvP. The most important thing to remember is that you're there to find your playstyle and have fun; all of the advice out there is secondary to that.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 15:12 (eleven years ago) link

Undead warlock - steeper learning curve but you can burn through quests and levels. You have a pet to tank. You can kill multiple mobs (monsters in wow speak). And you can cannibalize back health and turn that health into mana (magic fuel).

Warriors are very gear dependent, so if you are going to play alone a lot of the time, you probably won't want a warr b/c you will have a harder time getting gear.

Playing a healer (paladin/priest/druid/shaman) has the advantage of often being needed by other groups. I usually play a priest b/c I am a masochist.

bnw, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 17:00 (eleven years ago) link

Excellent! Didn't realise I could have more than one character, that's good news and takes a lot of the pressure off, really. Much happier to experiment now. I fancy doing lots of ranged stuff, because it's a role I've never gone for before in an RPG, I'm usually all about melee. So yep, guess I'll probably start out with either hunter or mage.

Let's assume my friends will be ILG friends...are we mostly horde or alliance?

JimD, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 18:04 (eleven years ago) link

I'm Alliance on Deathwing (human holy priest named Grinz: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Deathwing&n=Grinz, lol @ my crappy healing wand).

Undead (Horde race) are fucking brutal; undead warlock/mage/priest are all good ideas. (I am not sure if the trial account lets you create more than 1 character, actually, so if you have to pick just one go for whichever one you think will be the most fun.)

HI DERE, Thursday, 7 February 2008 05:13 (eleven years ago) link

Is this something that still plays well by yourself? Or is it almost essential to go around with hordes of other players?

Ste, Thursday, 7 February 2008 10:51 (eleven years ago) link

Eventually you're going to want to hook up with other players but esp. the levelling process can be soloed (some people enjoy that process more than the party-based content).

HI DERE, Thursday, 7 February 2008 14:37 (eleven years ago) link

Well, yep, I started up an undead mage, and I'm having fun just questing and levelling up, so far (I'm only at 6 though, and have only recently ventured out as far as Brill).

JimD, Friday, 8 February 2008 00:47 (eleven years ago) link

I'm Alliance on Magtheridon. But I'm willing to transfer servers for the right guild. :)

Mordy, Friday, 8 February 2008 06:31 (eleven years ago) link

I am actually experimenting with only soloing (not even doing instances). I enjoy it a lot so far (level 35) but I think endgame is so instance-oriented I will eventually have to cave and find a decent, adult, VERY casual guild (and the likelihood of finding that is why I won't group at the moment).

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 20:26 (eleven years ago) link

you should start on a role-playing server and just screw with people. (insert obvious ilx comparison)

bnw, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:15 (eleven years ago) link

Only certain races can be certain classes; on the Alliance side, night elves, dwarves and draenei can be hunters but humans and gnomes cannot. I suggest dwarf over night elf because dwarves have this racial ability that allows them to basically be immune to damage for 30 seconds. Since you have a pet that will be attacking whatever you are killing, this should give you the ability to survive many fights that might seem otherwise impossible.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 23:05 (eleven years ago) link

also night elves are for girls.

srsly tho, listen to Dan.

bnw, Thursday, 21 February 2008 00:38 (eleven years ago) link

I prefer undead warlocks because cannibalize comes in handy big time. warlock is a fun starting class in general, because it makes you all cranky and stubborn. priest is fun if you hate yourself.

I find playing a priest way more fun than any of the other classes because tanking sucks and dpsing is boring. Also it's been much easier for me to find groups as a healer than a dpser.

I am levelling a blood elf priest on another server and he is awesome.

this is so true.

the server I am on is always needing tanks too, tho. mage is EZmode, that's for sure.

jessie monster, Friday, 22 February 2008 05:23 (eleven years ago) link

seriously guyz should i 'get into' this? where should a n00b start?

DG, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 18:33 (eleven years ago) link

I recommend getting into it if you are willing to accept the enormous time sink it can become if you find that you like it.

I always recommend DPS classes to n00bs because a) tanking sucks and is not satisfying, and b) healing is also hard and you are more likely to be blamed for party wipes than anyone besides the tank. Mages, warlocks and hunters in particular are good starter toons; I always recommend Alliance because I know those races better than I know the Horde races.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 20:18 (eleven years ago) link

can I just ask what the fuck DPS stands for

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 20:22 (eleven years ago) link

Damage Per Second, aka Classes That Can Quickly And Efficiently Kill Things. Some classes have different builds that allow characters to tank (aka soak up damage and remain alive, neutralizing threat to the rest of the party), heal (self-explanatory), buff (make other classes more effective at their jobs) or DPS (PEW PEW PEW DED). Different classes are suited to different roles but mages, warlocks, hunters and rogues are always damage classes no matter how you build them.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 20:26 (eleven years ago) link

ok do i get to 'cyber' with hot elf chicks?

DG, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:04 (eleven years ago) link

Yes, but they will be hot elf chicks played by 16-year-old boys looking to scam you for gold.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

no change there then

DG, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 21:19 (eleven years ago) link

I recommend getting into it if you are willing to accept the enormous time sink it can become if you find that you like it.

That is so the crux of the matter. I tried it, and I 'got into' it, and I found that I liked it, but I also found that I wasn't getting to sleep before 5am each night. So I quit, after just seven days...and even now, two weeks (or so) later, I'm having dreams where I'm exploring woods and killing bats and generally levelling up, and whenever I wake up after one of those dreams I a) regret quitting, and b) regret ever starting.

So yeah...handle with care dude.

JimD, Thursday, 28 February 2008 00:14 (eleven years ago) link

Actually, hitting the level cap and doing scheduled raids helped me cut back my playing time; I now know when I'm going to be playing and exactly what I'm going to be doing when I'm on, so I can concentrate my play experience in a manner that I don't do when I'm in level-grinding mode. (Of course, I do have two alts that I really want to lvl but I am terrified of devoting the time to it because I know I won't be sleeping or eating all that much.)

HI DERE, Thursday, 28 February 2008 17:38 (eleven years ago) link

so you're not at the point where your guild leader is telling you to grind for resistance gear for hours before every raid?

that's where we were when i quit. fuckin' ahn'qiraj.

Will M., Thursday, 28 February 2008 18:18 (eleven years ago) link

Haha I only did AQ40 once; pretty much all of my raiding pre-BC was in Molten Core and I never bothered to get fire resist gear. (Also this is another reason why I like playing a priest; pretty much all I'm ever asked to do is heal. No special tanking gear requirements or anything odd like that; just heal.)

HI DERE, Thursday, 28 February 2008 19:54 (eleven years ago) link

ahh, you didn't really need FR as a raid until AQ40, I think, for the nature resistance against the blobby guy. then again, by the time i quit the game, litereally nobody had beaten him, so who knows? mabe they nerfed him and you don't need to have all of those stupid capes from that stupid level 40 instance... what's it called again? in a mountain, lots of slimy guys in it? feh, never mind.

i think they got rid of that grinding resistance crap and replaced it with grinding reputation or something, anyway.

Will M., Thursday, 28 February 2008 20:47 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, the rep grind is a lot more tolerable because they tied high-level recipes/patterns to it, so you end up with something tangible you can oftentimes use to make money once you're done.

So I'm in Karazhan for the first time since February, half guild, half PUG. The main tank is a prot pally from another raiding guild who:

- doesn't know what gear he needs as a prot pally
- doesn't understand why most raiding guilds stopped raiding in advance of the expansion pack (duh new gear that will make old tier gear obselete)
- wiped the raid by turning Nightbane so that his tail knocked half the raid into the charred earth
- wiped the raid by pulling all five exploding ghost mobs in the room in front of opera
- wiped the raid by BUBBLING WHILE TANKING PRINCE

I'm never going to complain about feeling like an underperformer ever again. It was kind of nice going in there after not raiding for 7 months and healing like a fiend for most of the run; love love love LOVE the neck trinket from Sunwell!

i've been sort of deflated by all the changes coming up - not sure if i'll keep playing after i hit 80.

Gametrailers have been having a "History of Warcraft" series, which are generally pretty interesting, but what I learned from the WoW one (plus some Wiki-ing):

WoW started from two players chatting shit on EverQuest.
One was Rob Pardo, who happened to be Vice President of Game Design at Blizzard.
The other was 'Tigole', aka Jeff Kaplan, just some dude who played a lot of EverQuest, who was then hired as Lead Designer for World of Warcraft.
Tigole's full name is Tigole Bitties <- THIS IS BASICALLY THE POINT OF THIS POST, HOW TO SPOT THE GUY TO GIVE THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM TO
Rob Pardo staged a riot on Everquest because Paladins and Shadow Knights were out-tanking Warriors.
Some people think that this is why Paladins suck, and why Death Knights will suck.
It's unclear whether this is true, but repeatedly asking this question during Q&A at Blizzcon will get you thrown out. I know, I was shocked too.
Rob Pardo has a bachelor of arts degree in criminology, law, and society!

I am still WoW-ed (lol pun!) at the number of add ons required tbh!

hyggeligt, Thursday, 8 January 2009 16:09 (ten years ago) link

none of those are required, maybe vent since no one uses the in game voice.

bnw, Thursday, 8 January 2009 16:17 (ten years ago) link

Obviously voice communication has its downsides, though it's fairly easy to tell the complete idiots using their keyboard skills. I've been removing more and more add-ons after my return to WoW - the Titan Panel plugin that tells you what the least valuable thing in your bag is (and lets you click to drop/sell it) is the one that gets most of the use, I think. Well, that and Atlas.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 9 January 2009 10:24 (ten years ago) link

Oh yeah: Atlas is an addon which maps out dungeons for you (because the regular map goes away have you have to make do with the mini map in the top right), and say which bosses are where, and Atlasloot is an addon which says what they drop, which has proved useful in persuading people to try optional bosses: "This guy over here has this loot on him, wouldn't you like that? (and also will be interesting to fight, which is what you're supposed to be here for, right?)"

Also I have been away for a while, and the Achievements section is having a disastrous effect on me. "Can't level up my unarmed skill to 400? I think you'll find I can!". But it is a lot of fun to EG go visit lvl 20 alliance instance The Deadmines as a lvl 50 horde, particularly when you get bored of killing everything and just stealth to the last boss. "That's some fine guarding you guys are doing there, keep it up!"

Nice work! That does kind of stand out as the most skill-based (as opposed to "Pick up 1000 Emblems of Valor because you have nothing else going on in your life at all") achievement.

I was coming to see if anyone had any views on the upcoming changes, where they let people Dual-Spec (for a sizeable price) and swap armor easily. It sounds like it'll be good to be a druid, and also good news for anyone who's ever found them selves in a party with a priest that can't heal or a warrior that can't tank.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:23 (ten years ago) link

I think the 10-man version has to be harder, what with only having 10 people.

Dual-spec is also going to be nice for those 25-man Naxx runs where you only have one shadow priest in the raid; it's kind of too bad they didn't implement it on release since it would have saved me about... 400 gold in respecs. (On the plus side, after one disastrous initial attempt, I am pretty good at tanking the Instructor encounter now; amazing how increasing yr hit keeps the mobs from breaking your Mind Control.)

I'm a DK and they are nerfing tanking so I'm not super excited about them myself. I'll probably end up with two PvE DPS specs or maybe a PvP spec, even though I hate WoW PvP.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Thursday, 26 March 2009 02:09 (ten years ago) link

Just out of curiosity, what loot system do you guys use?

Boss-based DKP, normally 10 pts per boss unless it's new content, in which case it's 10 pts per attempt and 15 pts for the first kill. I tend to hoard (lol) points so that I can get the items I really want, plus I'm AFK a lot so the other healers get their goodies before I do anyway.

(ps bnw, Outfitter has changed my life)

(I love that I have that trinket for the intermittent times when I have to go shadow, btw)

BADGES DON'T GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO WALTZ OFF WITH A BABY (HI DERE), Thursday, 26 March 2009 15:31 (ten years ago) link

Our Naxx raids use a system that works like this. People roll on a main-spec item. High roll wins. The person who wins an item can still roll, but won't be able to win anything unless other rollers pass. If nobody wants an item for a main spec roll, it goes to off-spec rolls. Those are not governed by the said limit.

Theoretically, you could get kitted out in a night, if everyone passes or already has loot.

This has good and bad sides. If you get kitted, then there's not a lot of incentive to come back, unless you just like to get trashed and wreck content with friends (as we're basically farming Naxx now, killing time until the new raids.)

Matt M., Thursday, 26 March 2009 15:34 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, we're basically doing achievement runs now (tonight is actually 20-man Sarth/Malygos)

I just looked up Je-Tze's Bell and WAU WANT along with the Forethought Talisman

BADGES DON'T GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO WALTZ OFF WITH A BABY (HI DERE), Thursday, 26 March 2009 15:38 (ten years ago) link

We use Suicide Kings for current tier content, and Matt M's system for farmed stuff. It's easy to operate and there has been very minimal loot-related drama in two years. Cool thing about SK is when you're at the bottom of the list you can basically scoop up anything you want that other people don't.

I'm going after as many of the raiding achievements as I can get before the patch comes out (Immortal Naxx tonight, 6-minute Maly Thursday, heroics in the interim) plus fishing/cooking achievements (lol need to do ZG and SSC for that tho).

BADGES DON'T GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO WALTZ OFF WITH A BABY (HI DERE), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 18:07 (ten years ago) link

grr of course I find out NOW that I have dinner plans, grr

BADGES DON'T GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO WALTZ OFF WITH A BABY (HI DERE), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 19:40 (ten years ago) link

Oh, I'd go for the raid achievements if it weren't for the damned Immortal/Undying ones. Though I am working on grinding out my "the Insane" title in my spare time; at this rate I should earn it shortly before the sun goes supernova. Can't wait for Ulduar, though- the instance looks gorgeous, which will be a huge relief after graduating from the amazingly designed five-man Wrath content to an endgame that essentially consists of a couple of large rooms and a recycled level 60 raid direly in need of some graphical touchups (beyond removing "doodad_nox_door" in the last patch).

Also, while it's going to be rare as hell and probably require a hard mode kill, I must acquire the flying gnome head. A 310% mount that looks like the Warcraft version of the final boss of Super Mario World? Yes please.

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 21:24 (ten years ago) link

The flying gnome head is indeed awesome. In the last few weeks, we tried 6 minute Malygos and the Immortal, and both were utter failures each week. Made us wish we had started on those a long time ago instead of trying to cram them in right before the patch.

Eff achievements, though.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 22:35 (ten years ago) link

Ulduar is gonna be fucking fantastic.

Wrath is really the first time I've done the "serious raider" thing; I've always been 2nd or 3rd tier in my guild, so I've never gotten to see content before it was on farm until this go-round, so I didn't mind that it was pretty easy (never saw Naxx the first go-round; hell, I've still never been to the end of Black Temple, never seen Sunwell Plateau, and just set foot in BWL for the first time about 4 weeks ago).

BADGES DON'T GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO WALTZ OFF WITH A BABY (HI DERE), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 22:55 (ten years ago) link

It's because those raid instances were largely designed for people without lives, Naxx and SWP in particular. But then I'm one of those scrubs that thought BC raiding was far too hard for the rewards gained.

Matt M., Wednesday, 1 April 2009 00:51 (ten years ago) link

Our guild cleared BT - killed Illidan the very night before the nerf - and I have to say it was a great instance. If the Blizzard pattern holds true, whatever comes between Icecrown and the next expansion will be the next no-life Naxx(original)/SWP.
I flip back and forth on raiding. Since I started with my own guild in Karazhan, I've switched mains (twice) and quit raiding forever (also twice).
I have been on the verge of quitting again, lately, but Uld looks pretty bad-ass so I'm sticking it out and trying to get the rest of my set in Naxx. Here's my dude btw. I always have trouble playing when the weather gets nice.

we downed leviathan and got Razorscale after about seven attempts. Apparently Ignis is bugged, so we skipped ahead to XT-002 and wiped on him 3 times before calling it a night. we raid for 3 hours 3x a week. bunch of fogies in our guild. so far i'm enjoying the Ulduar fights quite a bit!

slugbaiting (rockapads), Friday, 17 April 2009 17:01 (ten years ago) link

Started a Paladin a few days ago, got a leveling guide and basically binged over Passover. Paladin is now level 50. I'm officially switching mains from my rogue. Turns out rogues suck at powerleveling. Paladins are the win.

Mordy, Saturday, 18 April 2009 20:51 (ten years ago) link

one thing dual specs have done is make me wish I had a true hybrid class. I finally bought a 2nd spec for my DK but it feels wasted since I'm not really all that interested in tanking. Pallies and shaman are excellent choices for a main.

XT-002 is incredibly, amazingly annoying! Pretty awesome boss, but WOW what an annoying fight; ditto Kologarn (stupid fucking eyebeams).

The trash in the antechamber is crazy! I now see what I was missing in not doing BWL, pre-nerf BT or SWP.

I can sit in my car all day, and that doesn't make me a car. (HI DERE), Monday, 20 April 2009 16:01 (ten years ago) link

You're further than us. We spent all night last night wiping on XT-002. A few people had done it on 10-man, but were mystified about why we were getting owned so hard. We only had one mage in group and he was arcane, so we were having a hard time snaring/stopping the little scrapbot things.

slugbaiting (rockapads), Monday, 20 April 2009 21:52 (ten years ago) link

Because of my schedule last week, XT-002 is the only boss fight in the courtyard that I've done; 25-man Flame Leviathan and Razorscale were downed on a night I couldn't go (they skipped Ignis) and the 10-man pug I did picked me up after the courtyard had been cleared.

So, I know the fights inside Ulduar but I don't know the first few, lol.

I bought two pairs of shoulders (plate and mail) and the axe. I sent them to an alt and transferred the alt to a different server to play with some family members. Leveling is so fast I can't even tell how much the 10% experience thing is helping. My motivation to level an alt is almost non-existent at this point. Been playing for years. It's mostly just something to do while chatting.

get money fuck witches (HI DERE), Monday, 22 June 2009 17:18 (ten years ago) link

Grats on the Yogg kill! We've been struggling with that fight. It's really highlighted the weaknesses of our guild. Unfortunately, we're a pretty "casual" guild, with a lot of friends and family, so benching or booting people isn't a realistic option.

slugbaiting (rockapads), Monday, 22 June 2009 18:33 (ten years ago) link

We beat the enrage timer by I think 3 seconds, lol.

We stalled for a month when two of our 3 main tanks decided their band was more important than raiding (which I fully endorse btw). It's kind of amazing how much they've nerfed some of the fights (ESPECIALLY XT and Kolo); some of the ease now is knowing how to play them but we reliably do both of those every week without anyone dying, which was just not the case when the dungeon first rolled out.

My new goal is to finish off the Argent Tournament achievement before 3.2 comes out; only have Darnassus to go! Oh, and I have to duel someone but that's basically "hey guildie, let me beat you for this easy achievement lol".

get money fuck witches (HI DERE), Monday, 22 June 2009 18:55 (ten years ago) link

Yeah it had been a point of pride that we stayed ahead of the nerfs, but I think they hotfix nerfed Yogg since we first started (the MCs in phase 1).

I haven't taken much interest in anything outside of raiding, so I haven't really messed with the Argent thing. Do you get something cool if you finish the achievement before 3.2?

question, can you see other players who are not in your guild? can several guilds fight the same monster at once? does it feel like you exist in a world where everyone else is playing (at least on your server) or is it just your guild vs the NPC world?

gabb 'bag (s1ocki), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:36 (ten years ago) link

You can see the rest of the world outside your guild. You can also join with other guilds to down a monster. A guild is actually more of a non-ludic organization. You could easily play the game and never join a guild -- it is primarily an organizational + social + communication tool.

Mordy, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:46 (ten years ago) link

It is totally a world where everyone else is playing; as Mordy says, you can go your entire time without ever being in a guild (in fact, most of my characters aren't in guilds).

get money fuck witches (HI DERE), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:49 (ten years ago) link

We finally got Yogg. I really didn't expect the fight to be so hard walking into it. It wasn't as hard as Vashj or KT was back in the day, but it gave us a hard time. Probably took us a good 20 hrs of raiding to down him. What finally seemed to do the trick for us was cutting back to five healers.

mr. me too (rockapads), Monday, 29 June 2009 05:35 (ten years ago) link

I wasn't able to play at all this week so I don't know if my guild downed Yogg again, plus I'm taking an enforced mini-break to focus on other things (like Fallout 3, lol) so I'll probably miss out again this week.

Vashj and KT were RIDICULOUS.

but do big monsters/quests regenerate for anyone who wants to do them? if you wanna take down a certain dragon and somebody else already is fighting it, do you have to like queue?

Michael tapeworm much talent for the future (s1ocki), Sunday, 5 July 2009 13:42 (ten years ago) link

It depends on where the dragon is. If it's a world boss, you have to wait for it to respawn. If it's in a dungeon, your party gets its own copy of the dungeon to play in so there's no waiting.

BO (DJP), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 14:48 (eight years ago) link

good luck. thought about taking the plunge back into WoW again myself but it's a scary place to live when you're eating/breathing/drinking WoW 24/7.

Mordy, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 14:48 (eight years ago) link

well let me say this:

at level 80, you get a seahorse mount for underwater travel

BO (DJP), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 14:51 (eight years ago) link

sort of unhappy about having to go underwater in the first place. Like no matter how many breathing and movement buffs and mounts you give me, I still think 'god underwater level whenwillitend whenwillitend'.

So yeah, I've headed for Hyjal instead - between that and rolling a Worgen there go my winter evenings.

portrait of velleity (woof), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 15:38 (eight years ago) link

There is an entire quest line that is a parody of Jaws, though, down to the quest names; it's kind of great.

I got my priest to 82 and a worgen druid up to 13 yesterday; one of my friends described the goblin starting zone as "I didn't know if I was playing WoW or GTA" but I don't know how hyperbolic that statement was.

BO (DJP), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 15:45 (eight years ago) link

Spent a couple of hours getting my main Rogue started on the trip to 85, & getting a new Worgen Rogue up and running. Cockney fishwife Worgen voices are a1, posh Worgen ok too; wolf form looks good, but not sure about the human models, fiddled with them for a while, kept ending up with variations on an Oliver Reed.

portrait of velleity (woof), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:00 (eight years ago) link

I intentionally didn't try to make my worgen's human form look like me (for a change!) and ended up with a pretty bad-ass wolfman form, so I'm pleased about that. Their whole story line was a lot of fun to play (lol at Grandma Wahl, one of the best NPCs to pop up in a while) and yes, the Cockney fishwives are A+.

BO (DJP), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:07 (eight years ago) link

holy shit guys i still dont have the patience to get a character past, say, level 20something

how much am i missing out on

kanellos (gbx), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:51 (eight years ago) link

game doesn't start until 85

Mordy, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:54 (eight years ago) link

for real?

i've kinda heard that suggested (it's "endgame" right?), but never really bought it

kanellos (gbx), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:55 (eight years ago) link

^^^ I never believed this until I started actually seriously doing endgame dungeons

Even now, it's less "game doesn't start" and more "game becomes subtly different"

BO (DJP), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:55 (eight years ago) link

Well, idk about 85 since I haven't played Cataclysm, but it was certainly true for me for levels 70 (Kara was really a game unto itself) and 80 (heroic dungeons and Naxx)

Mordy, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:57 (eight years ago) link

huh. well then.

kanellos (gbx), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:58 (eight years ago) link

I re-activated last night after not having played for a fairly long time. I have no idea how to play this anymore, which I am pretty excited about.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:06 (eight years ago) link

Things def change at max level. I enjoy levelling more than endgame tbh; I usually turn to the large scale PVP (Wintergrasp, AV), since I don't like hanging out in dungeons with random ppl (I'm unguilded; the one time I was in a guild, that's when the habit got really bad - scheduling my life so I could be in on a Friday to run instances, rather than just playing a bit when I happened to be in).

portrait of velleity (woof), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:12 (eight years ago) link

kanellos (gbx), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:33 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, unless you have friends to level up with you (and who promise only to play at the exact times that you're playing) you're going to pretty much be solo leveling up to the endgame

Mordy, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:33 (eight years ago) link

so this is crack

kanellos (gbx), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 19:49 (eight years ago) link

Indolence Mission (DJP), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 22:26 (eight years ago) link

oh god, i want the crack. plz tell me Cataclysm is awful.

It's not awful but I'm finding it annoying. Like they've taken stuff that was fun in small doses in Wrath and pushed it way too far - linear questing, 'epic' plot lines w/ cinematics, tons of phasing. They did narrative well in Wrath; I think the praise led them astray.

Also, a bit too much vehicle stuff. The novelty wore off in Wrath. Don't want to be a Naga with 4 abilities.

Also swimming.

It'll prob be a lot better once I've levelled.

from what I can tell, you guys got dicked over majorly (death of Caine, Garrosh's ascendancy, Sylvanis becoming more overtly evil)

I'm ok in principle with Blizz shaking up the comfy cosy honourable Horde, but yeah, it's sort of sad. Era of inclusive & managerial New Horde soft politics shifting into an aggressive, divisive & militarised government. I blame the Goblin financiers.

(New Orgrimmar great though, prob our biggest gain)

portrait of velleity (woof), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 14:43 (eight years ago) link

The new instances are bad-ass, although I do swear that if I have to go through Halls of Origination one more time...

Also if you are playing a caster class and are not a healer, STOP ROLLING ON SPIRIT GEAR. IT NO LONGER GIVES YOU EXTRA BONUSES AND I ACTUALLY NEED IT TO REPLACE QUEST GREENS. GOD.

Indolence Mission (DJP), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 14:52 (eight years ago) link

so basically as a hunter (lol) i shouldn't roll on anything that isn't agility/stamina, right? focus doesn't get recharged by any attributes as far as i can tell

kanellos (gbx), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:34 (eight years ago) link

Haste makes you regen focus faster but I don't know that stacking it while levelling will work very well; you have to give up too much of the other stats to make it worthwhile.

Generally speaking, agility with hit/haste/crit is what you're looking for.

Uldum is bad-ass; I am still hoping they make the Katamari nod into a daily quest. (ditto the Joust nod in Hyjal)

Indolence Mission (DJP), Friday, 11 February 2011 14:38 (eight years ago) link

so my interest has tapered a bit now that i'm busy again...kinda stalled mid 60s

ullr saves (gbx), Friday, 11 February 2011 15:08 (eight years ago) link

Hahaha Arena. Not enough panic and aggression in raids? Good luck anyhow.

Just hit 85 the other day, & yeah Uldum the's zone where it started getting actual fun, after the swimathon & all those talking rocks (both of those grew on me towards the end – loved the stonemother). Uldum a blast from the off though – a lot of time for the cat men at war. They should stick a few more dailies in there - it'd be a nice zone to spend time in once I'm through Twilight H.

bnw, Friday, 11 February 2011 15:39 (eight years ago) link

I am playing my priest, yes; I am waffling between disc and shadow, though (we seem to do better when I'm shadow even though the "right" thing to do is disc, plus we've also started raiding ATM so I haven't fully committed myself to dropping the $$$ necessary to constantly repsec between PVP and PVE builds; I should just switch to one of my alts and make him PVP-centric).

Ramakhan was the first rep grind I did, precisely so I could get the camel mount. I was the first person in my guild to get one. (The only Cata rep I don't have exalted now is Baradin Hold... o_O)

Indolence Mission (DJP), Friday, 11 February 2011 15:48 (eight years ago) link

Therazane is hilarious, yeah; I kind of forgot her daughter was the last boss in Mauradon until she started bitching about how much she hated us!

Indolence Mission (DJP), Friday, 11 February 2011 15:50 (eight years ago) link

I've been tossing around the idea of gearing up a PVP healer and doing rated BGs which I hear are a blast when done with the same team. My friend tells me that it's the closest a video game has gotten to organized sports. I can't decide between shaman and druid. I'd really prefer a priest, but my priest alt is stuck somewhere in Outland and I just don't think I have it in me to level through all that shit again.

rockapads, Friday, 11 February 2011 17:04 (eight years ago) link

The dungeon finder is so your friend re: Outland; it flew by on my druid and I didn't wasn't even wearing heirlooms.

CAN YOU GULP ANY LOUDER PISS WOMAN (DJP), Friday, 11 February 2011 17:12 (eight years ago) link

lol that is hilarious.

great tip, too, I didn't think of the fact that as a healer the queues would probably be fairly quick, too, even for lower level dungeons.

rockapads, Friday, 11 February 2011 17:16 (eight years ago) link

btw, I have heirloom gear for every armor class. how sad is that?

rockapads, Friday, 11 February 2011 17:16 (eight years ago) link

once i figured out that 'dungeons' even existed, i started leveling hella fast. also i was pretty rich when i got to outland so i got a flying mount pretty much immediately, which makes soloing go a lot faster.

ullr saves (gbx), Friday, 11 February 2011 17:18 (eight years ago) link

Dungeon queues seem quick anyway if you quest while waiting; I'm leveling as a boomkin and didn't start noticing exorbitantly long queue times until I hit WotLK.

btw I had the best group the other day; prot pally, resto shaman and THREE BOOMKINS. Most fun Nexus/Utgarde Keep runs EVER.

CAN YOU GULP ANY LOUDER PISS WOMAN (DJP), Friday, 11 February 2011 17:20 (eight years ago) link

three weeks pass...

I just reinstalled after being away from the game for about a year - wanted to see what Cataclysm is about. I'm not loving it. It kinda feels like the 'new' old world is missing a lot of connective tissue? All the new changes just feel underexplained and sudden to me - maybe they want you to read the books to get the full ~lore experience~ now. Of course, I never played any of the Lich King content*, so maybe that would've given it context. Also, all my old guildbros have left to play Rift, which I assume is the latest flavor of the month distraction - I'm sure they'll be back, but it's annoyyyying. The new talent changes seem to have not been well received by most of the community.

*I quit during the BC era, right before Black Temple rolled out, and bequeathed my 70 druid to a guildie, and when I came back some time after Lich King debuted I had to make a new account - and I got bored and quit again after a month or two, so I've missed all the high end content since BC

I kinda agree with this. I played a Worgen for 15 levels just to see what the starting area would be like, and it felt like an assembly line to me. I didn't even find it particularly immersive.

ℳℴℯ ❤\(◕‿◕✿ (Princess TamTam), Saturday, 5 March 2011 07:17 (eight years ago) link

my account expires in 2 days. I was having second thoughts about letting it expire since I started playing my mage a few days ago and found it fun, but I couldn't play for more than an hour tonight so yeah. Once I again, I bid WoW farewell. I think the thing that keeps sucking me back is that I keep remembering places as I would a real place, and feel the urge to go back. Good thing about Cataclysm is that they destroyed most of the old places so hopefully this time I'll just leave it be.

rockapads, Saturday, 5 March 2011 07:53 (eight years ago) link

I hadn't played for 2 weeks until last night and i could easily skip another 2 weeks. Not having a regular raiding schedule makes it way easier for me to play something else for a while (hi dere Mass Effect, maybe I will finally finish you).

This spooked me when it started happening to me. Thinking 'where was that long strand that I'm remembering, silvery grey sand, West of Ireland somewhere o shit I am thinking of Darkshore.'

Got my main to 85, then didn't renew my account: I've been out for a few weeks, no strong urge to go back in. I'll probably end up returning – finish Twilight Highlands, level some alts, see how the battlegrounds are - but I'm v indifferent right now.

after playing more Cata i've turned around on it a little bit; in my post up there I was playing on an Ally server briefly but now I'm back where I belong (horde) and I think the new old world Horde content is a lot better. the new silverpine questline is amazing and so is the goblin starting area (my problem with the goblin & worgen areas is that there appears to be no room for variation if you play them more than once). i like the new quest distribution, where you just get a few at a time, but it's jarring when you hit BC again and each zone has 30 quests for you to pick up at once - BC is completely untouched

new skill/talent system sucks and makes it easier for me to understand why people are leaving en masse for Rift... i'm tempted to try it out myself since all my old guildies are consumed by it and as a result nobody can get raids together anymore.

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Monday, 11 April 2011 19:25 (eight years ago) link

and also tbh just read about the new talent system and i think it sounds way better---as someone who only played casually and had neither the time nor the inclination to research the "right" way to build a given character, it's nice that they've streamlined that process

(basically, since a lot of players with a given class/specialization were learning identical talent trees, because that was the "best way" to play that class/spec, they shifted most of those talents over to abilities that you automatically learn as you progress through the game as that class/spec. what's left over are talents that are more about personal playing style. seeing as how i got chewed out for not playing my own character "correctly" in a couple dungeons, it'd be nice to have some of that taken out of my hands. but maybe the nerds will be pissed about this training wheels approach, w/e)
