the incomparable tim rogers has been a full-time contributor to kotaku since last year. I have loved tim rogers' writing, but it's possible that talking-fast-over-a-video is him at his finest. here's a thread for tim rogers content past present and future!

this week he did a video review of Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition which makes me…kinda want this bugfuck game…

mostly for my own future reference, here's a wayback machine link to action button dot net, which is currently missing with a message that says "relax, it's coming back", featuring his 18,000 word review of Final Fantasy XIII which I think is a high point.

i fondly remember his long, digressive "reviews" of earthbound, chrono trigger and super mario bros 3 being really important to my own writing at a certain time in my life, and i'm sad to find out the website is down now so i can't spend 2 hours reading all three again!

the part of the hyrule warriors video starting around 13:30 where he tries to explain the appeal of musuo games is wonderful

ciderpress, Thursday, 17 May 2018 16:08 (five years ago) link

I have a mixed opinion of Rogers as writer. He has some annoying tendencies for sure, but his perspective and his style feel so unique and inimitable. I like his absurdist wordplay. I like his overall design philosophy. I could do without about half of his loopy digressions on his travels and lifestyle...at the same time, a large part of his appeal (for me) is the way his writing is always crammed-to-bursting with vivid and unnecessary detail. I'd be lying if I said his stuff didn't influence me, though if you asked me to define said influence, I'm not sure I could. Anyway, his God Hand review is pretty funny.

rereading the FFXII review last night, there was a lot of 2010 bro-type/edgelordy language and imagery that he's mercifully moved on from.

recently ive been listening to the Violence Island podcast:

https://web.archive.org/web/20151130033625/http://earthblows.com/

it's a battle royal of random characters. interestingly the one they taped in October 2014 "Must See Killing Spree" begins with a fight between Dick Solomon and Dr. Huxtable himself, and Tim Rogers wastes no time saying that there are some deep, dark "grandmother terrifying" things about Cosby. he never comes out and says what he was accused of but it's clear he saw/heard the Hannibal act from the same month and he took that stuff seriously. just kind of interesting, i was listening to that and had to look up that it was 4 years ago. an entirely different world.

as for his personality, he doesn't seem all that different from music hipsters i've talked with. then again hipsters hate nothing more than their own kind.

imwo honks are the only non-violent way to communicate to other cars. someone needs to invent smart honks that figure out if you are trying to merge lanes or whatever and produces a tone the other car understands and can communicate to the driver.

That was really enjoyable. "In other words, like all video games, Death Stranding is *exactly* like Dark Souls. It should be called 'Tark Souls.'" Extra amusing to me because I've never played any Metal Gear games and only know them from one or two iterations of Smash Brothers, where the guy always reminds me of Snake Eyes from GI Joe, and what few clips I've seen of this one seem the farthest from a sneaky ninja assassin game, so it's hard for me to make a connection between that concept and whatever the hell this game seems to be. So I guess I'm ... excited? Curious? Certainly entertained by the simmering hype.

More people should review games months before they play them.

as someone who has never played ffvii and has no intention of playing ffvii or the remake this was amazing. only trouble is that i couldn't help reading everything in tim's voice for the rest of the day

"what a philosophical nightmare"

devvvine, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 09:15 (three years ago) link

I've also never played FFVII outside of the demo, and probably never will play it, but I find it very fascinating as a pop-cultural relic, so this was worth watching for me. I'll probably avoid his video on TLoU until I've actually played that, though.

american primitive stylophone (zchyrs), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 15:57 (three years ago) link

two hours into this it has mostly convinced me i shouldn't play it. Good review! Saved me a lot of time!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 17:14 (three years ago) link

this was fine. i mean i watched three hours without being bored. but i wasn’t at any point wowed enough by anywhere he went with it that i felt, afterwards, it had been a sound investment of my time. which i suspect is how i would feel if i got the ffvii remake so i guess it fits

Your GF is a champ for sticking it out that far, dude is definitely an acquired taste. I daresay this is the best thing he's done yet. I'm amazed at how many times he cuts away to that Romero/Carmack photo and it is equally hilarious every time. Also amazed at how he seems to be aging in reverse.

Ok I've watched three hours of the Doom thing, even though it blows up Firefox's memory usage and makes everything crash. I can't always make it through his super long videos but this is good.

(might have to switch back to Chrome even though I was trying to lesson my Google surveillance)

The FFVI essay is good too, as a poignant midwest portrait of pre-internet childhood being obsessed with Final Fantasy games (relatable, except for me it was the original FF). Did he really go to high school with Subway Jared?!

bogo jumbo boba (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 2 October 2020 17:08 (three years ago) link

I am very curious to see how he will spin insight, LOLs, and poignancy from Pac-Man, a game that to my mind, "speaks for itself" even more than Doom. Like what on Earth is there to say about Pac-Man?

american primitive stylophone (zchyrs), Friday, 2 October 2020 18:44 (three years ago) link

I struggled with the doom vid. doom's greatness is somewhat lost in watching gameplay video.

Lol at the Patreon supporter that cancelled their sub because they didn't want to hear Tim talk about games they'd never heard of. Why would you even bother subbing to a Tim Rogers channel if you weren't interested in hearing him ramble on at great length about anything at all, as that basically is all his videos (and the whole appeal of watching them IMO)?

Tim is the american bradass of videogames

kniphofia face (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 8 January 2021 03:39 (three years ago) link

LA Noire's game mechanic was annoying, you had 3 options when questioning a suspect, forget the terminology but essentially you could believe them, challenge them with proof of their dishonesty, or doubt them without proof. The distinction between the latter two options was close to utterly arbitrary and annoying as hell. The acting, storyline, and writing were all pretty good as far as games go

there were definitely things about la noire i liked, in spite of the bad parts, im curious to see him talk abt it for a long time bc he might cover some of those things

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Thursday, 28 October 2021 00:35 (two years ago) link

Half ass watched intro-1-6-end and really enjoyed it. I think doing other stuff was kinda the way to go here, it's not super deep and pausing every couple of minutes to read too much text on the screen often kinda kills the flow of these videos for me (am I meant to do that on a supposed second play or something?). and giving my undivided attention to the hour on jackets and watches would've kinda pissed me off. This way, it was just funny.

Of course I will watch the other segments sometime. The only-watch-two thing was just dumb enough for me to indulge. What rationale did he even try to give? Uh, there's a lot of repetition and stuff? lol. I guess he's interested to see which bits rack up the most hits.

I don't think I could like anything more than his Tokimeki Memorial episode.

lol what's the opposite of a speed run? Because that's what this is so far.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 October 2021 18:10 (two years ago) link

Anyway, there's a meta perfection to his approach, because as far as I'm concerned youtube is where I go to watch and/or enjoy alternate endings to or plot branching in games I'm too lazy or exhausted to play more than once to get every ending (that is to say, all of them so far), let alone 100% or "platinum." So of course I will eventually make my way through all/much/most of this.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 October 2021 18:45 (two years ago) link

Weird he seemingly couldn't stop from playing so cheaply. I intentionally didn't bother learning much about how to best level up, do "quickhacks", and all that, and combat stayed reasonably challenging. But of course I can't say that's "playing it right", either.

Also he played a lot when the game was still super broken. The rogue taxis stuff was one of my favourite bits of the game and was mostly busted for Tim.

The game itself is barely the point at all of course. If you are thinking about playing it before watching the video, I'd say don't bother!

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 28 October 2021 18:51 (two years ago) link

Part 3 literally spoils every ending in the game so if that matters don't watch it.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 28 October 2021 18:53 (two years ago) link

I like the "good time hat" idea, that's pretty much how I try to play. I just play so slowly that luckily I wasn't very far before a lot was fixed.

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 28 October 2021 18:56 (two years ago) link

Somehow of all his claims I find the idea of how many videogames he plays to completion to be the hardest to believe. 4 or 5 versions of Shadowrun? A dozen rodent based 16 bit games? To the end? Really?

As someone who reads Tim's Twitter feed I feel pretty confident saying hes just a massive liar even when he isnt playing "tim rogers" or maybe he's just always playing "tim rogers" even in interactions with people he knows. I get that he has a funky brain but the breadth of things he claims to have recently consumed is ridiculous

, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:07 (two years ago) link

The part where he says he read 266 books last year and 12 this year (because he was playing too many video games)...idk, it seems crazy to me, but people on ILB read an amount of books that I can't conceive of, and he does have a pretty weird brain. And he has time for consuming media as part of his job.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:13 (two years ago) link

i always get into that zone where i think "oh they must just be skimming it", and then think about how all reading is a factor of skimming, and we all have our own ideas of what "skimming" is

Karl Malone, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:16 (two years ago) link

because even if you read in one day -- really read -- a book that takes a normal person 7 days, what does that mean in terms of absorbing the material? the person who takes 7 days may very well sit and think about the passages during the "downtime" during those 7 days, during those dreams, in conversations. "oh what are you reading?", "well, "

meanwhile the person who reads 300 books a year is apparently doing all of this in a day, nearly every day

Karl Malone, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:18 (two years ago) link

Karl Malone, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:18 (two years ago) link

Yeah, I thought I was a super fast reader in college, but I was definitely skimming for keywords and gists, and I'm slower now because I'm actually trying to absorb all of the words, for pleasure.

Clearly you can skim games too (maybe this is what we should call speed running).

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:21 (two years ago) link

that was always the thing about the matrix to me - sure, you can hook up a cable and download the info to your mind, but does that also count the time that your mind spends digesting the content? you may hear the golden rule as a 5 year old, but it takes time to understand what it really means. does the matrix cable account for that? maybe it does. i admit that i read superintelligence a few years ago, all the way through, and think of this stuff in terms of "cycles". maybe there are plenty of cycles to go around in the matrix

Karl Malone, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:21 (two years ago) link

Clearly you can skim games too (maybe this is what we should call speed running).

for sure. not even speed running, but just trying to "beat" the game as quickly as possible. maybe doing 2/4 of the bosses in breath of the wild before headed toward ganon

Karl Malone, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:22 (two years ago) link

I can believe that he's capable of reading very fast, less believable is his tendency to respond to everyone on Twitter asking "have you read/watched/played this" with "why I just so happened to be reading/watching/playing that yesterday/this morning" which he does surprisingly a lot

Among other things...I've known 2 people who have legitimate trouble telling the truth in any context and he just reminds me of them sometimes, and that unfortunately leads me to treat the actual biographical stuff he shares as kayfabe

As someone who has been following the dude's output since the mid 00s--he's been doing degrees of kayfabe for pretty much his whole career. He's even gone on at length publicly about how the first stuff that he wrote online was a troll to make fun of some self-serious person he knew on a game forum. For a while I was maybe unhealthily para-socially fascinated with the question of "how much of this is a bit?" I get the impression that there's less of the persona and more of the "authentic" guy in his current output, but it's also clear that he believes real, true authenticity on the internet isn't possible, and he has fun with that.

comment from some dude on the Tokimeki Memorial review

While Tokimeki Memorial is one of the first and is definitely the most influential "genuine cyberpunk artifact" of a game, I'd say the LovePlus (ラブプラス) series go even farther - forcing the player to talk and sing into the microphone and evaluating their emotional investment through voice recognition technology and demanding the completion of daily and special limited events in *real-time*.
What, you aren't hardcore enough to have a "real" short conversation with your cyber girlfriend whispering into your Nintendo 3DS every morning at 08:00-09:00 in a convincingly caring tone? Well, tough shit - cos' she is going to dump you, game over. You are in class or at your workplace in real life? Nobody cares! Your girlfriend is calling on the Nintendo 3DS and you better pick up that call, or you are in serious trouble.
The rabbit hole of the madness of LovePlus+ is on its own level, honestly.

lukas, Monday, 1 November 2021 00:25 (two years ago) link

I've watched part 3 (what he liked) and bits of part 4 (what he didn't), and ... I feel kind of bad for this game. I'll never play it and don't want to play it, but it seems so rich and ambitious that (like Rogers) I can see its achievements and failures, existing sort of symbiotically, which if I were one of the programmers that slaved over it for so long would make me feel terrible. Like, all that hard work, all those ideas, all that effort, and it became an instant punchline, justified and not justified, for so many. And for many others probably remains so, despite (I assume) many patches.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 1 November 2021 01:15 (two years ago) link

I played through a couple endings. I enjoyed it.

I was shook by the Judy side quest/romance as much as tim and it’s ridiculously good (Judy is my ride-or-die forever partner in cyberpunk)

tried restarting the game this week and it’s wild how fleshed out (and yet vacant!!) the opening quests are. So much choreography but so little substance. Like there’s a little cutscene with an architectural flyby and synopsis of how you’ll infiltrate. Nothing like this happens at any point in the rest of the game! Or at least not as I remember.

mh, Monday, 1 November 2021 01:46 (two years ago) link

LovePlus sounds wild. Anyone else catch the part of the new review where he says Tokimeki 2 is twice as good as the first? Hmmm

I'm finished all the parts now. Really fun. And he totally claimed to play all of those games in the out-of-TIMROGERS-character mode. And in the list of games he played through, he threw in "and 20 hours of Red Dead Redemption 2". I guess I believe him. The walk we see him take may be his first in quite some time.

So there is one open world game that he found surprisingly good and will talk about in detail later on. Wonder which.

I'm not sure I've beaten any of the GTA 3's... might have to pick up the "definitive edition" coming soon and maybe it'll be less forgiving wrt RC controlled helicopters.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 1 November 2021 15:34 (two years ago) link

I think the "I played through every single iteration of [game] AND THEN I replayed... AND THEN I played every possible influence... AND THEN I played all 500 hours of... AND THEN I read every single fan fiction... AND THEN" is definitely a complete bit. I believe he researched these things thoroughly which may have involved a lot of play time, but I don't necessarily believe any of these lists of content consumption claims are literally done as described. The relentlessness to making the "pile" sound as big as possible is a bit that is meant to be proportionate to the cartoonish depth of his dive into a subject, hence the intense delivery and review lengths as well (and everything else).

He would be so good if he could somehow learn to contain his enormous ego. or at the very least, not romanticise it. Thanks for the rec, sadly Noah doesn't seem to cover the type of games I am interested in (which Tim does damnit).
Watching Tim feels like watching keeping up with the Kardashians. I know the vanity is bad for my own soul, yet the hate-watch drive (and genuinely interesting things to say about video games) says give me more.

there is no one else on earth making scripted, maximalist brain puke video game criticism videos and for that reason i'm glad he went independent so he can go as far as his health will allow. though i do fear that his eventual dark souls review will end up like SMiLE or hxxps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73hip3pz0Xs

and if the tim rogers i'm defending there is just a carefully constructed fictional persona, then he's a very talented artist and should keep on doing what he's doing

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 27 September 2022 02:44 (one year ago) link

i see a lot of criticism like HP's on reddit whenever he's posted there and i really just don't see it. in nearly every review, the egotistical autobiographical stuff is clearly done in service of his main points or in contextualizing the game itself. granted i'm only maybe 25% through the new review, but every piece of biographical information so far has been included for sake of the game itself. i don't think any of it is there to give me an appreciation of tim rogers' life. i've said before that i'm pretty sure a lot of it is straight up kayfabe anyway.

the only review i can think of where he was actually writing about himself for the sake of writing about himself was very long written review of FFVI.

regardless, i don't think the way that he uses his personal life in his reviews is in any way unique except that he's doing it to talk about video games rather than novels, travels, food, whatever, and that he's doing it on youtube rather than in writing.

, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 03:40 (one year ago) link

i do think that his personality and sense of humor is what drives a lot of interest in his videos but when's that ever been a problem with criticism?

, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 03:43 (one year ago) link

there are a lot of people on the internet who have glommed onto a variation of the tall poppy syndrome where anyone who acts as a distinct individual (read: not anonymous) or has actual subject area knowledge is somehow showing off or violating a social contract. there’s definitely a strong contingent in the video game fan space (and Reddit) that have that tendency

Tim’s video persona feels like more of a bit to me, where he does have extensive knowledge but he couches it in this over the top dramatic reading that sounds like a cross between a retro newscaster and an enthusiastic high school drama kid who plays every character the same way in an “acting voice”

It’s not always my thing, but I appreciate his work and seriously hope he remembers to take breaks from video games occasionally

mh, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 03:51 (one year ago) link

that is to say, I don’t think it’s ego-driven in a bad way, and presenting things you’re knowledgeable about in videos you worked hard on should give you a little ego boost in a healthy way

mh, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 03:52 (one year ago) link

in a way i feel similarly about tim rogers and battlestar galactica (2004 tv version): there is a whole bunch of it, waaay too much of it. you don't need all of it. some of it is purely filler. but damn, when it is good it is GOOD

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 03:53 (one year ago) link

tbf some of the tangents are about his understanding that he is a weird, obsessive dude and I get more of a sense of self-deprecation from some of those admissions

mh, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 03:56 (one year ago) link

Looking forward to the new video and hope he's back on Insert Credit soon. The stand-ins have been good but I do miss having him there claiming he's recently played any and every game ever mentioned.

bain4z, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 08:52 (one year ago) link

Reduced to a redditor, ouch.

The potential of him being on the spectrum reminds me to be kind. If that is the case (I’m not sure, has it been stated?) then yeah, what he is doing is a good thing.
I have all the time in the world for stories of saving up one’s part time income and sneaking to the video game store to buy a game in the 80’s outside the view of your female workmate. I cringe when I have to hear him say “I don’t like myself” halfway through a 3hr video essay. His personal stuff is brilliant when it relates, vry off putting when it’s braggadocious like “I played FFVII 16 times in the past two years” repeated x8 in a single video. If the bragging is a bit, I guess I just don’t get it.

hrep (H.P), Tuesday, 27 September 2022 10:31 (one year ago) link

that's the worst example of a brag I've ever heard.

I'm an hour in, fun so far. as a former Japan liver </brag> the Why Did You Come to Japan bit was really cute.

hrep (H.P), Tuesday, 27 September 2022 11:58 (one year ago) link

lol cmon. Is that a brag for serious gamers? I dunno. I've never played a Final Fantasy. I should try and get through his review of the remake sometime.

The Doom and Pacman and Tokimeki reviews hooked me. I've always been curious about the omglol Weird Japan! magazine kind of coverage of things we never used to get "over here" and thought that section of this video was well done.

Seems the Boku fan translation isn't out yet.

when you’re a game reviewer/creator, saying you played a game that many times is like “bragging” you worked two weeks of 70 hour shifts and you don’t get paid overtime, imo

mh, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 18:37 (one year ago) link

I find his epic essays a little too much to take (literally; they're really long!) but I've got to admit they accomplish something novel, even necessary, in a way. Video games make a bazillion dollars a year, and young people in particular spend a bazillion hours a year just *watching* people play video games. Yet there's not a lot of long form discussion/dissection of video games anywhere, afaict, not really, which is remarkable, given their prominence in pop culture. So if he wants to spend six hours crafting a take on a game, making the case for why something so niche or cult or overlooked deserves your attention, I say bring it on.

I mean, it's wild, a game like Red Dead Redemption 2 can make almost a billion dollars in a weekend, and yet it's nowhere close to a household name property, imo, not in the same way, say, Star Wars or Marvel is. For sure people will pay attention to the Last of Us show, but many of them will have no idea about the game beyond that there even is a game, let alone a game whose merits someone like Rogers could intelligently, intricately discuss for five hours or whatever it was without so much as dipping into the plot, iirc.

Finished the Boku video (who else made it?)

He mentioned again his habit of listening to a new album *every* day. Mightn't be a stretch to many on ILM but I know I wouldn't get much out of trying that. It's probably a decent relief from his memory issues, of course detailed again as he goes home to Kansas for the first time in 30 years...

I never got the sense he was bragging about anything. I hope for him that he even is just pretty OK with himself. There's a lot of talking about himself of course. The thesis he rolls around to at around the 5 hour mark is all we can learn from well-imparted nostalgia. "I love everyone and you can too". I'd be more inclined to call this "nostalgia" simply "memories" or "experience", but I can see if he's drawing a distinction from how he can remember the exact date he last went to a certain food court.

I drive a lot and have been listening to a ton of Insert Credit recently. For Tim, solely, I’m finding. Guy is sharp and funny. I’m still not sure where he belongs in the bullshitter to savant spectrum, but enjoyable either way.

Brandon S. is fucking insufferable though. “So my number one game of the year is Super Fart Tensei 3. I don’t know, it’s kinda like Sonic Mania. It’s the most Dreamcast game of the year. Like the jumping feels pretty good, the running feels OK. But yeah, it’s bad and super janky. Hehehe. But kind of interesting. I played it for 12 minutes. Hehe. Yeah, that’s my number one.”

I want to shove him down a toilet.

xp lmao

It is true, the interplay between them all is what keeps me coming back. It would be too much if it was all Tim. But I do skip the episodes he’s not in.

Jaffe is a great host who knows how and when to interject. Frank is kind of a bore, but I like the museum/history stuff and his barely concealed contempt for most of what Brandon says is really funny. It’s a good sitcom.

Sort of really love how Frank seems to barely have played any games mentioned. I have to be in the mood for Brandon but the recent Tim/Brandon only episode was really, really strong.

bain4z, Monday, 24 April 2023 08:31 (eleven months ago) link

I listened to a bit of that end of the year ep, and yeah, Rogers is fast and funny and less affected than his long videos. The other guys, don't know anything about them or why they are in the orbit of this video game savant. The one guy talked about giving "Elden Ring" maybe an hour before giving up, which seems ... short.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 April 2023 11:09 (eleven months ago) link

Well, Brandon is the co-founder of Insert Credit, which was Tim's first writing gig back in the early 00s. Those guys have been co-conspirators for decades. Not sure where Frank comes in, but I think the work he and Kelsey Lewin are doing with the Videogame History Foundation is super cool. I agree with y'all that Brandon's opinions can be baffling/obnoxious, there was a segment on this week's ep where he was trying to bash the Criterion Channel for being "pretentious;" Tim wasn't having it.
