Anyone get this game yet? It seems to be EVERYWHERE. I was in dt Montreal today and saw a half dozen ppl playing in in a 3 block walk, and it's not even out in Canada yet.

This game seems significant enough for its own thread... What say u? Have u caught as many zubats as me? (no, it's all I catch)

there is a nearby park i love to walk my dog in and it was nice to get accosted by strangers about pokemon, rather than about signing petitions (which was par for the course 3 weeks ago)

a woman with a shiba inu talked to me...after some chitchat abt our catches (and our dogs) she said, "my dog is like a real life vulpix" ~ oh brother!

i was a fan of ingress (it got me to know my neighborhood a lot better!) and played pokemon for 17+ years so yeah i am all about this

what a crazy phenomenon. i'm trying this out, no idea what to do w/ anything yet. there's a few landmarks in my block and wouldn't you know it there were people strolling around them with their phones out just a few minutes ago.

how do teams work? I haven't battled anyone yet.

and i really wonder where they're pulling these images from and assigning spots; about half were really out of date.

My son used to think he could see ghosts in his room through his Nintendo handheld, since the shitty camera showed artifacts moving on the walls in low light.

So I can just imagine what his reaction would be when I told him there were invisible Pokemons running around that you could only see through the cellphone.

At an ice cream shop on Saturday and couple next to us was eating a flight of small shot glasses of ice cream. We were like "oh I want to do that, looks so cool" and the guy was like "Oh yeah I cannot believe how many people are doing this. It's incredible. I see people on the street now and we're like I know what you are doing!" I made confused eye contact with his gf and she was like "Honey they are talking about the ice cream flight not Pokemon...." How Butch, I mean (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 11 July 2016 16:01 (three years ago) link

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was pretty much the last kid thing I enjoyed as a kid. Pokemon came right after and joined Rugrats, Boy Meets World, and those Magic cards as something I knew nothing about.

But a scavenger hunt game involving maps? Sounds like fun.

I could see the appeal of Ingress because it was niche and geeky. This shit, where everybody knows what you're up to and everybody is doing it, just activates all my anti-herding instincts. That twitter video caused me a little twinge of nausea and I had to turn it off.

El Tomboto, Monday, 11 July 2016 16:18 (three years ago) link

Not trying to be punker-than-thou but seriously I have a serious aversion to herd (as in physical herding) behavior in people, like a little bit of a phobia but also it makes me (extra) mad and unpleasant

Jeff, Monday, 11 July 2016 16:45 (three years ago) link

star wars, game of thrones, ninjago, basically anything with a big character roster would get the job done.
i think the main appeal is novelty right now though; my sense is there isn't much of a GAME yet.

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Monday, 11 July 2016 16:47 (three years ago) link

yeah the point is that this blew up because it's piggybacking on a popular+nostalgic IP, and one that fits especially well with the augmented reality hook. the actual substance of the game from what i've seen is pretty half-baked

ciderpress, Monday, 11 July 2016 16:50 (three years ago) link

from what I've read pokestops are just copied from ingress landmarks which were crowdsourced from players over the years

Wh wh why do you hate Google Street View?

pplains, Monday, 11 July 2016 18:12 (three years ago) link

I think it's a cluttered representation of the data that doesn't give me any additional insight into what the area I'm trying to navigate looks like. I want to know the pattern/layout of the streets, not what they looked like at a particular snapshot in time.

It's like you're taking a perfectly good abstract representation of what an area looks like and dumping the uncanny valley effect all over it to me. I am so distracted by the representation that it lessens my ability to interpret the data and successfully navigate.

I guess in the same sense that practically everything we employ to distract us from our impending mortality is a pointless POS. It's a POS I don't personally see the point in (I prefer asocial and indoor POS games) but I'm glad that this particular POS is making so many other people happy.

xp to ste: only in that you have to go outside with a gps. the closest approximation is the pokestops/portals, but they're just arbitrary sites and don't have a physical container full of toys or anything. the pokemon appear all over the place, but they can appear more often around those pokestops if someone has lit a virtual flare under them (and even then they're not locked to a specific point, you can walk up the street and the pokemon sort of drifts along with you).

I work near the Lincoln Memorial. I meant to head out there today and see if there was anyone Pokemanning.

I'm 36. A pair of my roommates in college were obsessed with Pokemon around 2000 when it was first getting huge, but it seemed pretty weird to me even then. I still watched all the shows with them, but I didn't really care too much about it. They watched Digimon too and I remember liking that better.

I already said how I missed everything between 1992 and 2007. But I've been relearning everything with the kids, starting with this mysterious Spongebob character who I've now seen all 982 episodes of. That said, the kids hadn't got to Pokemon yet, probably because it's old game that uses physical pogs or whatever.

However - Pokemon, Mario, Angry Birds, Legos - it doesn't matter. I'd be all over this stupid game if my Android phone wasn't a piece of shit.

i just hit lv 16 and my highest pokemon is cp810. it's getting harder not easier to catch <cp100 pokemon which i think is not the point, so they might want to tweak that.

this morning when the servers crashed i had another go at ingress. it's exactly as fucking inscrutable as it was when i tried it 2–3 years ago. so many woozy blast animations that you can't see anything else except the million buttons and menus that don't explain what you're supposed to do next. the beauty of pokemon go is that you can just pick it up and play it (and it doesn't look like a winamp skin).

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 03:04 (three years ago) link

i transfer the low-cp ones because they're useless at that point.

in general you're better off catching everything you see because it cranks up your xp, and you get extra evolution candy and stuff. the fact that pokeballs are in abundance (if you live near enough pokestops) means you can catch as many as you like.

it's fun and mostly harmless. The park by my house has multiple stations and a gym on each end. nice group of people of all ages hanging out the other evening at the tables and someone has a bunch of pizza and sodas delivered for everyone to share.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 15 July 2016 00:14 (three years ago) link

Your commitment is laudable. I'm weighing up walking home from work, which will take 3 and a half hours.

three and a half normally, or stopping every 45 seconds for a capture?

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 15 July 2016 09:56 (three years ago) link

Yeah, the increased walking for everyone is great, but it's barely amounts to a crawl because I have to stop and capture all the time.

Jeff, Friday, 15 July 2016 09:57 (three years ago) link

Make that 5 hours. Going to brave my first gym at lunch, but figure they're going to be more competitive in Central London than South of the Thames.

I started playing in London because I was there most of this week, and having come back home to the midlands the thinning of landmarks is kinda shocking. I've gone from having 15-20 pokestops within a five minute radius to having the nearest pokestop be five minutes walk away. On the upside, the gym at the pub across the road is currently controlled by a cp72 drowzee so I'll be taking that down as soon as I wander over there.

calstars, Friday, 15 July 2016 12:42 (three years ago) link

the gym stuff is really poorly documented. you're supposed to swipe to avoid attacks. best way to do that is wait until the screen flashes yellow (which indicates an attack coming) and immediately swipe left/right, then tap to attack. keep doing that until they drop dead.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 15 July 2016 12:46 (three years ago) link

btw the gym stuff is a bit of a wank. you can defeat a gym and claim it, and within 2 minutes someone else will have taken it from you. if you watch a gym in a populous area, you can actually see it change colour constantly.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 15 July 2016 12:49 (three years ago) link

Great advice, thank you. Went to my first gym just now and maybe slightly overestimated the efficacy of my team...dead in seconds. Knew nothing of this swiping method, which will definitely help in the weakly defended gyms near my house. Also, why is Zubat such a shit in every game? I'd rather not have the points.

zubat is shithouse but golbat (evolved zubat) is formidable.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 15 July 2016 13:21 (three years ago) link

JimD, Saturday, 16 July 2016 09:17 (three years ago) link

i agree it's bigger now, inevitably, esp because pokemon was mostly a ~kids~ thing and Go is a ~kids then plus kids now~ thing

but in terms of how the media talks about 'crazes', this is so late 90s. this actually feels as ubiquitous right now as the media was treating pokemon back then. the star wars revive might come close. maybe the first avengers movie but the whole marvel thing took forever to build up. i'm probably forgetting stuff.

Walked over to the park last night, attacked the gym there, took a few goes to figure out that oh, you're just meant to tap on the other monster etc. But eventually I took down the gym leaders! Turns out when you defeat a gym leader, the game doesn't say "ok you're the new gym leader", it says "ok, this gym is now neutral". And in the 10 seconds it took me to figure that out, some other dude had claimed it. So I did all the work and someone else (from a rival team!) gained. It wasn't a fun gaming experience.

Worse though, the guy then strolled over and wanted to chat. "Hey, you're catching pokemon? I just took over the gym back there! I don't really understand it, all my pokemon seemed to die really fast but then I tapped on the gym anyway and it said I'd claimed it!". I explained what had actually happened and did my best to be jokey about it but in truth I totally failed to hide how salty it'd made me and I think he came away with the impression that I was a bit of a dick. It wasn't a fun social experience.

Town full of people starting and stopping and swearing all day as servers dropped out at various crucial junctures of egg incubation/lure use. It's riddled with errors but I have never loved anything so much. I have the original theme music playing in my head constantly. I wish it was as hysterical in London as the above video.

Sure a ton of trenchant think pieces are being written on this as I type, but this kind of mass phenomenon really attests to the overwhelming destruction of societal belief systems we've suffered this year. Suddenly people (even non-gaming folk) feeling the need to form ultra-escapist countercultures. Everyone desperately seeking an easy new unity that can't be found in politics, but which might just be found in the universal adoration of Psyduck... Not saying it wouldn't still be enormous under more 'normal' circumstances, but the end times atmosphere is certainly escalating the need for camaraderie.

once you get around level 20 the game starts to get ridiculous. pokeballs randomly curve when you throw them, pokemon butt the balls away a lot more, they break out of the balls a lot more (standard balls, superballs, megaballs, whatever). it's not even related to cp because they all do it, even the cp10 ones. rather than the usual nintendo method of making early achievements easier and introducing more difficult monsters/levels/map areas, it's like niantic thought "hey we should make the entire game harder by doing dumb shit". combined with the worsening server problems it's less playable every day.

Autumn Almanac, Sunday, 17 July 2016 08:23 (three years ago) link

I think server errors are the contemporary equivalent to your Gameboy running out of battery in the car on long trips and are therefore deeply necessary to the whole psychology. I'm not at level 20 yet.

wonder what changes they'll implement (and when) to keep casual interest up once the craziness dies down. a lot of people don't really give a shit about the gym system and there isn't much to work for if you're one of them. would expect them to ramp up the social media aspect, not just pokemon/item trading but posting/chat, friends list type stuff, gifts, maybe actual one-on-one dueling. but this is all built on the infrastructure of a completely different game with a different and much less massive following

having 3 teams (really 2 and a scrappy underdog) might've been a mistake with so many people. wonder how things would look if they based the teams off the original 8 gyms rather than the original 3 game colors

and there should absolutely be pokemon that are only available to catch/hatch if you're on certain teams. it's not like that right now is it? once they do make trading a thing, is it gonna matter? "does anyone want any of the 14 rattatas we all just caught"

qualx, Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:38 (three years ago) link

I definitely think a more social element needs to be introduced. Like it's crazy how introspective looking at a terrible approximation of myself walking round a map for hours makes me. I mean, I would be that way anyway, but this is much more formless and given to attacks of dark energy, not unlike Zubat. Someone needs to write a Bionian deconstruction of the Pokemon oeuvre.

Trading is essential. Not out of exclusivity necessarily, though I'd be interested to see what kind of economic system arose out of that within the game. Also think a social 'clan' system could be fruitful for irl meetups and discussions about sightings etc though no idea how that could be executed so that it deflected creepiness. One-on-one duelling would also be a great addition, yes. I like the thought of approaching other players like Pokestops.

i'm guessing their whole roadmap is going out the window at this point.

qualx otm re no unique pokemon per team. right now the choice of team is almost completely arbitrary (apart from yellow's reputation) and the whole gym setup is a bit silly. this more than anything reflects how pokemon go was never meant to be a core offering imo.

Autumn Almanac, Sunday, 17 July 2016 23:03 (three years ago) link

otoh if they eventually make it so you can interact with people simply over the internet and not based on GPS, and they implement trading, it'll bring with it the kind of unholy black market that nintendo probably doesn't want associated with it. see the recent crap with the counterstrike skins market or the years of WoW character market on ebay.

otm, it's like niantic never really understood the original games. there's no point in the stardust because all it does is power up a pokemon that will be out-powered in a couple of days anyway. today i caught a pinsir with cp1237, so good job i didn't waste time/resources getting a cp879 pinsir up to cp900.

i assume there'll be tweaks in subsequent releases (niantic seemed to do a lot of that with ingress) but they want to get moving on some of the fundamentals before they lose long-term players. once we hit 151 (?) pokemon there's not really anything else to do.

some fun everybody on ilx complains about reddit crossover: https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemongo/comments/4tsyuv/can_we_stop_mincing_words_niantic_youre_royally/

When this game launched I'd go to the park and make new friends among a crowd of 50-60+ people. The game didn't need to be good, it just needed to work in order to drive people to the park.
Now the crowd is down to maybe 10-15 people. Most of the casual players have quit because they got tired of a game that never works eating their battery. They've stopped scheduling time to go into town for Pokemon hunting.

oooooooorrrrrrrrrrr maybe they quit because they were always going to quit? because zillions and zillions of people weren't going to keep participating in a fad once the excitement wears off?

it's sad how a lot of the excitement for the people who really want to be hardcore about this is built on it remaining a huge Thing That Brings Everyone Together Ideally and not just another nerd thing

i don't care to get all sociological about it but i will continue to gawk @ reddit dorks and feel a bit sympathetic about it all

qualx, Thursday, 21 July 2016 04:05 (three years ago) link

otm, there's not a lot to keep casual players around once the thrill of "mum mum there's a pidgey in my toilet!!!!" wears off. ingress and geocaching have kept a moderate but loyal core following, and i expect pokemon go will too. as niantic builds new and interesting features into the game, there'll still be theme days/nights, lure parties &c. but they won't attract the hundreds they're pulling now.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 21 July 2016 04:12 (three years ago) link

imo what's more exciting is the prospect of new geo-based games that get people out for different reasons, that wouldn't get momentum/funding without pokemon go exploding like it has. geocaching can be insane fun if (a) the caches aren't stupid and (b) there are enough nearby. something that sits in between, but without ingress's insanely complicated and bonkers ui, could be where we end up with augmented reality

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 21 July 2016 04:16 (three years ago) link

one thing niantic absolutely does deserve shit for is not expanding on crowdsourced ingress at all, completely ignoring the massive demographic shift between the two games and making it virtually inaccessible for a massive amount of people

one thing niantic absolutely does deserve shit for is not expanding on crowdsourced ingress at all, completely ignoring the massive demographic shift between the two games and making it virtually inaccessible for a massive amount of people

yeah this is absolutely divisive. from my inner-city flat i can see 54 pokestops and five gyms (so all within 700m). from my sister-in-law's house in the burbs i can see nothing at all. she drove us 15 minutes to her 'local' shopping centre which has one gym and two pokestops. if she were to sign up she'd have to buy supplies, but when i need 100 pokeballs i just walk round the block.

apparently niantic stopped processing portals ~2 years ago, and i'm guessing a lot of late-to-the-game ingress players operated in these empty areas. niantic needs to work on the enormous discrepancy here if they want the game to succeed long term, whether it's processing those portal submissions or importing points of interest from some other database.

of all the issues with pokemon go, this feels like the most vital to resolve because it's cutting swathes of people out of the game and/or forcing them to spend money just to keep up.

immediately before this game came out i was walking ~2,000 steps (~1.5 km) per day. in the seven days to this past sunday i walked avg 34,000 steps (27 km) per day, according to my fitbit (iphone stats are similar).

it's not because i'm obsessed with zubats though. i've been out of work for a while and hadn't been doing much physically, so pokemon go became my incentive/excuse to get out and walk. my mood has transformed because of this game.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 28 July 2016 22:53 (three years ago) link

i've gone out on a couple runs with this active on my phone. (it burns another 15-20% battery life in about 45 mins of activity.) but weirdly the distance logged in the 'incubator' is a lot less than the running app. i did some sprint interval stuff, i wonder if i was going faster at times than the 'speed limit' for walking? kinda cool if so

goole, Friday, 29 July 2016 16:21 (three years ago) link

there is a speed limit, but honestly if you don't have the app open and active on your screen, it just doesn't register movement :/

the speed limit is p high too, you probably won't outrun it. you can outbike it tho

a simba man (Will M.), Friday, 29 July 2016 17:18 (three years ago) link

i thought that 'battery saver' mode meant that screen goes mostly dark (with a dim ghostly logo) while still registering movment. bummer if not so.

goole, Friday, 29 July 2016 17:20 (three years ago) link

plus the distance logged was like 2/3rds of the running app. weird. could be just janky.

goole, Friday, 29 July 2016 17:21 (three years ago) link

it's still registering movement in that mode, but if the app is closed (or possibly even while your phone screen is entirely off) it's not tracking. it's a total bummer and i hope they patch it in. although i think that's supposedly the goal of the "go plus" dongle, which is supposedly always tracking.

xp yeah there's also the fact that it is just straight up janky sometimes. i'll walk what is definitely like a km with the app open and afterwards i've walked... 0.

a simba man (Will M.), Friday, 29 July 2016 17:22 (three years ago) link

afaik it uses the GPD to track your speed & distance, so if it doesn't ping the gps fast enough it approximates your speed as super fast

the major one is where you could once tell how far away some pokemon were (and therefore could track them down), but now it's just a panel that tells you 9 pokemon are in the universe.

people seem to be rage quitting en masse (or at least threatening to) because of the removed features/uneven game play, but really it's easier to just play it until it's no longer fun. revolutionary i know. at some point i'll get sick of paper toss gps edition and do something else, weh.

gyms are so dumb. the gym at work gets tossed around so much there's no point in putting anything in there after you've collected for the day, unless you like gather 10 others on your team who hopefully have really strong tanks and then stake it out after everyone else left, and even then you still won't last another 21 hours with it. what's the point? I keep taking it down from other teams for exp and leaving it grey

yeah, it's like any other MMO where you get to a high level and all the level 1 enemies have scaled so ridiculously that you can't even kill them and also all the level 80 enemies are so difficult you can't kill them and if you do actually manage to kill either you still get the same amount of exp for each that you did at level 1!

Mordy, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 03:00 (three years ago) link

which is weird for a nintendo-related property, because the classic nintendo technique for 20+ years has been to make early achievements easier while introducing new challenges. it doesn't make sense, especially in nintendo circles, to punish players for becoming more powerful.

in replaying pokemon silver last week, i remembered acquiring new skills like cut and flash to open new areas and shortcuts, but also that a level 17 croconaw obliterates a level 3 rattata. that's classic nintendo levelling, and it's the essence of pokemon. that's what training achieves. that's the point of having a starter and grinding it.

pokemon go's cp10 weedles should be tricky to catch when you're level 3, but insultingly easy at level 22. instead it's arse backwards.

and if you do actually manage to kill either you still get the same amount of exp for each that you did at level 1!

this is nuts. i've been ignoring cp900 pokemon because what's the point? i get loads more out of catching two crap pidgeys than one formidable pinsir.

so the incentive to explore was in itself an incentive to discover new areas of the neighbourhood. that was great. i've learnt so much about nearby blocks i didn't even know existed, including gorgeous old buildings and graffiti (melbourne's graffiti game is phenomenal atm). but the game itself doesn't give you further impetus to explore or even exercise, because the further in you get the worse it treats you.

and i'm lucky enough to have 100+ pokestops within 2 km radius. i hate to think how suburban/rural players are getting anything at all out of this. it's not like they can just wander down the street and collect a load of pokeballs.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 03:13 (three years ago) link

is there a point to exp when the game gets less enjoyable the more you level? it's so easy to take down a gym and get your dumb 10 coins before someone else beats you, what's the point in trying?

what's especially weird is that the exp jumps from level 20 on are already so insane it would be decently balanced if cp10s stayed easy. grinding out weedles and pidgeys over and over again is enough of a boring hassle, why make it difficult too?

qualx, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 03:18 (three years ago) link

wanna give leveling a real purpose after 20, make a real gym defender bonus or something. 10 coins for getting your pokemon in a gym (once a day), 2 coins every hour they last. something like that.

qualx, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 03:21 (three years ago) link

is there a point to exp when the game gets less enjoyable the more you level?

nah. i started dreading level-ups because it just means the game got less fun to play.

it sounds like the pokemon company/nintendo/game freak/whomever just handed over a load of assets and ip/brand guidelines, and let niantic do whatever it liked. niantic is skilled at geo (which it's done very well, if you ignore the imbalance in pokestops) and not much else. even its comms strategy is terrible.

the structure is absolutely there and parts of it are rock solid. i suspect nintendo pressured them to get it out early while the northern hemisphere was still in summer (which is weird for a company that delays heavily for the sake of perfection, but sun/moon is locked in for november).

at a guess, based on reports that niantic is ~40 members, it needs at least another three months of portal/pokestop processing, fine tuning of mechanics and gym development to get where it needs to be.

There's considerable space between "more players than all other games combined" and "dead" - it may well be roughly the size that Niantic were planning for in the first place.

I used it for about two weeks, went on holiday for a week where I didn't have much data and needed my phone batter so didn't play, got home and thought to myself - are you really going to keep playing this dumb game? I suppose the lack of depth is the issue, because I was legit addicted when I was playing.

ælərdaɪs (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 23 August 2016 17:55 (three years ago) link

me too. when you get to a higher level and you've caught enough, there's no incentive to go out and catch more bloody rattatas (not to mention the difficulty is still arse backwards)

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 17:58 (three years ago) link

So if anything I'm playing this more than ever. But I need to get better at battles. I've got about 4 Pokemon with over 1000 CP, and I've won one gym, once. And then lost it inside about 3 minutes. I don't really get combat. But I think I've figured out that I just need to catch every Pokemon I see, even all the bloody pidgeys and zubats, to get stardust so I can power them up. But gyms confuse me. Do gym levels change over time? Why? How?

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 1 September 2016 09:20 (three years ago) link

If you look at the numbers next to a gym, that indicates their level, and how to get them to the next level up. So a Level 2 will say 2000/4000 which means it's at 2000 but needs to get to 4000 before it becomes Level 3. If it's your own colour, you can train there and nudge the numbers up with each battle you win until it reaches 4000, at which point another slit opens and you csn stick in one of your own pokes. If it's a rival gym, you can battle there until 2000 becomes 0, then it turns grey and you can take ownership with one of your pokes. In either case, you can run at any time after you've beaten one opponent and the numbers will still go up/down for that victory. So you can get a space for yourself in a gym of your own colour by repeatedly beating the weakest poke in it, then running.

Madchen, Thursday, 1 September 2016 12:04 (three years ago) link

Scuse the typos.

Madchen, Thursday, 1 September 2016 12:04 (three years ago) link

i haven't played this in weeks. they cut down on the number + rarity of pokemon in my neighborhood so i can't catch any good ones when i take the dog for a walk anymore and the tracking system last i checked was still busted ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i guess i'll check back when ppl say it has gotten better

Mordy, Thursday, 1 September 2016 12:06 (three years ago) link

To fight, tap rapidly on your poke. When you see one of the blue bars in the top left corner fill up, tap and hold to unleash your killer move (you'll get a letterbox view so you know you've done it right).

I haven't really got the hang of dodging opponents - I just take what they throw at me and hope for the best.

Madchen, Thursday, 1 September 2016 12:07 (three years ago) link

Always collect coins as soon as you put a poke in a gym.

Here endeth the lesson, amen.

Madchen, Thursday, 1 September 2016 12:09 (three years ago) link

How do you collect coins when you put a poke in the gym?

I need more yellow gyms near me. They're all blue here. I should have checked before I picked my colour.

nxd, Thursday, 1 September 2016 12:32 (three years ago) link

The gym/gold thing ismy great bc of the 20 hour limit on collecting coins. The act of battling is rly only for ur amusement once u collect your coins for the day. The best strategy, in terms of time management, is to try and get in a lot of gyms all at once (easy in the city; idk where u live) and collect ur coins all at once. U can keep going to gyms if u want (for fun or whatever) but u can just not worry about it until ur clock runs out.

central park update: probably a hundred people stampeding up a path in the evening, clearly still a thing but the energy levels of the crowds are more muted, less interaction, more hardcore players now i think and most of the casuals have dropped out of serious hunting.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 1 September 2016 15:25 (three years ago) link

I'm halfway through a two-week pidgey stacking exercise. Gonna crack a lucky egg on Wednesday.

Madchen, Thursday, 1 September 2016 16:52 (three years ago) link

I just leveled-up to level 20 and now it;'s gonna take me 50k experience points to get to 21, wtf?!

Please explain your pidgey stacking exercise.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 8 September 2016 10:06 (three years ago) link

I catch all pidgeys and keep them for a fortnight to evolve as many as possible in one go. If you do that while a lucky egg is in use you get double XP (and below level 20 that usually takes you up a level). You can do this with other pokes as well, but as pidgeys only need 12 candies to evolve they are particularly efficient. Yesterday I evolved 13 pidgeys, 6 rats, 3 drowsies, 2 spearows, a shellder and a horsey in about 20 minutes, and it's got me close to level 22. Very boring, so make sure you have something good on telly.

Madchen, Thursday, 8 September 2016 13:35 (three years ago) link

Ooooh. Tactics! That's the thing. There are tactics. Like, I wonm't walk past any pokemon now unless I absolutely have to - I try and catch every last bloody rat and pidgey. And evolve all the time.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 8 September 2016 13:37 (three years ago) link

Yeah stockpile is the thing. Honestly I haven't noticed much in the upper levels apart from the base-level size of the Pokemon increasing and you get the max potion, which is throwing off my ability to keep the ball/potion balance correct

How Butch, I mean (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 8 September 2016 13:59 (three years ago) link

...also if u know you have an evolution that leads to a new character u haven't had before u can save those for the egg too bc points. i did that w an arcanine the various eevee evolutions

How Butch, I mean (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 8 September 2016 14:53 (three years ago) link

I'd been transferring anything I already had to the professor pretty much straight away, and just keeping one of each in my bag, only evolving when I'd get a new model, as it were.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 8 September 2016 15:09 (three years ago) link

omg hit level 25 and it takes 190k to get to 26, that is a lot of weedles and pidgies.

Jaq, Thursday, 8 September 2016 15:17 (three years ago) link

(xp) You don't get double XP on an egg for transfers, so it still makes sense to immediately transfer anything you're unlikely to evolve.

Madchen, Thursday, 8 September 2016 18:11 (three years ago) link

Just caught a Hitmanlee at my desk while spinning the pokestop I sit under every five minutes to top up my pokeballs. Never even heard of one before. I've called him Bruce. Do you change the names of your Pokes?

Argh I only get good stuff every five levels now?

Madchen, Friday, 9 September 2016 21:03 (three years ago) link

Yeah, only on the 0s and the 5s. Level 25 was pretty sweet, lots of ultra balls and a new level of potion, plus 1 each lure, incense, lucky egg. but it's a long long way to level 30.

I knocked a 1900 CP Gyrados out this morning with a 1400 CP Electrobuzz and a couple squirts from a Vaporeon. Left my Wigglytuff behind to fend for himself.

I'm missing Bulbasaur, Chansey, the international ones, Dodrio, Lapras, Porygon, Omastar, and Kabutops.

So I've been using Discord and planning raids with people and there are 400-500 users in Exeter, and it's like a weird community, and now I've met people who I've only ever seen in gyms before, and it's very strange. Added an extra dimension or several to the game. I've learnt a lot about mechanics and stuff which I didn't know before. Also it seems I'm slightly mythical; one person was impressed to meet me at a raid because I'm 'everywhere'.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 4 September 2017 10:50 (two years ago) link

I've been working all summer in a small town in NW Ohio, and got out for a few Pokewalks where I met up with large raiding groups. The difference in the demographic between Seattle/Redmond and here is interesting - lots of biker types in OH vs coder types in WA. Skews older in OH - lots more 10 year olds in WA vs heavily post-high school in OH. And finally after 1 year+ of playing I evolved a gyrados.

Jaq, Monday, 4 September 2017 22:33 (two years ago) link

The demographic here is very diverse: I've been at raids with teenage boys, entire families, pensioners, international students, PhD researchers, the regional manager of the local cancer research shops, Sainsburys delivery drivers, an older guy on a nice road bike. It's quite a spread. I see some of the same faces really frequently and others just once.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 14:44 (two years ago) link

Was there an update that recently rekindled interested in this game? When biking to the gym or walking the dog, I've been seeing large groups with a range of ages all silently standing in a circle, staring at their phones (and blocking the bike path/sidewalk).

for stuff like pidgey n weedle etc I just evolve on sight/as able. I figure there's more where that came from and I'm in the 38+ level so it's going to be a grind to 40 anyway. The new raids are pretty fun/populated in NYC (obviously) but I am very much playing to get perfect versions of these little fuckers

Haha, it was slightly nuts. About 8 of us locally got invites to an EX raid on Xmas day at 1:30, so of course everyone said “niantec you bastards”. But about four could go, and arranged to take multiple phones, and we exchanged account details, and now I have an 87% Mewtwo.
