Greg said over on the livejournal thread that, especially early on, the Hannah Montana TV show got over on its writing more than its acting, except that Miley is catching up as an actress. I only saw one episode, and an old one at that, but I wasn't pulled away from the story by seeing any obvious incompetence. I thought they should have ratcheted up the embarrassment more, since the premise of the episode was that dad gives Miley clothes that embarrass her. I did think she had a certain rapport with the bloke who plays her father. But as I said over on lj, the most alive thing on the show was the ridiculous dance Miley and Oliver do under the final credits.

He's so pretentious. It's amazing how, even though I don't really care to keep up with his career, every time I see him he manages to do something incredibly arrogant and self-indulgent that shocks me. That Grammy speech where he acts incredibly rude and conceited (the recent 2008 version) is another example of this. Telling the band to stop playing the music because he wants to go over the allotted time restriction and talk about his mother is a another example. If he hadn't started out his speech talking about how he "owned" the Grammy's and made the awards show his new home he'd have enough time to talk about how his mom is proud of him in heaven when she watches rap videos of her son, but he didn't think it through. People are hating this movie for the rong reasons. They're getting worked up about the "issue" of abortion, when the movie isn't a morality tale or an after-school special. It's a comedy about a singular person in an individual situation. Then they're mad because of all the "indie signifiers", because they are still under the delusion that they somehow possess the magic key to jaded enlightenment and non-mainstream culture, as if these music / artists / or ideals will never cross over. Like, "Hey, other assholes are listening to MY MUSIC, and to add insult to injury, they're thriftshopping too!" Get over it. I don't hear clear arguements against the script, performances, production, etc.

And so, I ask again, what exactly is the bar for Teen Dramedy if not Juno?

In its mass-market designs, it represents the oversaturation of a particular "indie" aesthetic that had started to grow stale by the end of the 1990s but somehow took on a new place by being subsumed into the mainstream in the early-to-mid 2000s with Seth Cohen wearing ringer tees on The O.C. and Modest Mouse in car commercials and such.

Hitchens's rhetorical style is almost as faulty as the religious people he criticizes. Take a bite out of this, homos:

There are also those who think that Romney's disowning of past Mormon polygamy is too opportunistic, since the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does still offer the consolation prize of multiple wives in heaven (just like the sick dream of Mohamed Atta).

What purpose does making that comparison serve other than to associate Romney with an established Enemy of America (EoA)? It mistakes degree and extent based on casual association to a shallow, muckrakey effect.

File even if you owe, even if you can't pay, even if you claim crazy deductions. Get an extension but do not fail to declare income to the IRS. You'll pay either way. IRS keeps track of this and technically when, not if, they find you, you could get audited, penalities, probation, criminal record (fraud is considered moral turpitude).

We took our eye off the ball being distracted by Starbucks and let those torture and debt guys get into power and run the country into the ground. That may be how we'll look back on the past 10 years. Soon enough we'll be nostalgic about gentrification, as opposed to storefronts closing without new replacements, and for the years when a coffeeshop with a fireplace was the target of our righteousness.

Speaking of which, where were Starsailor in your 2001 Review of the Year feature? Especially the opening article where you say how boring 'bloke rock' was, citing The Verve, Travis, Coldplay and, er, Shack, and thank God, then, for The Strokes "reviving" music. WHAT ABOUT STARSAILOR??? Y'know, the band you didn't fucking shut up about all fucking year, saying how they were the great, white hope for British music and all that crap that your readers had to put up with? Are you now trying to wash your hands of them, now you've come over all 'Let's ROCK!' Just pretend they never happened, eh? You twunts.

any grown adult who's part of any subculture is highly suspect

I tend to judge whether or not people are "suspect" based on how they treat other people, their ethics, intellect, etc., not on what they're into -- let alone thinking they're suspect based on the fact that they're into something at all. Give me someone who's passionate about something, even if it's something that sucks, any day over some anhedonic fucker who sits in the corner sneering. That shit got old when we were eighteen.

Also, it depends how you define 'work' - the Soviet Union was doing pretty well on its own terms till external forces (and its rather overenthusiastic expansionism) brought in down. And Cuba does a passable imitation of a fully functioning society less than a hundred miles from the undisputed idealogical centre of global capitalism!

I really don't see what's so scandalous about saying Damien Hirst is a fake; even if you buy an original, you're still buying a fake-- a scam which is only made possible in a place like poor, gullible, London, with its self-hating and deluled arts establishment and all that foreign money floating around. I do not blame him, I blame the philistines from the Turner Prize etc. BTW I'm not Momus or anyone else from ILE/M. And stop betting, that's a barbaric habit.

She is a Madonna version that can sing, make actually good songs instead of monkeying whatever is trendy, is slender and shapely instead of stocky, giant handed and heavy chinned, and on top of all, knows how to actually dance.

No wonder she is listened by people of good taste while Madonna is remains basically as an icon for old and fat effeminate men.

Oh. No shit? He and Calvin Johnson djed this birthday party on a hill/field in Maryville and I think Ian was hitting on girls, and they were both very good dancers. And totally my kind of DJs. bamcquern, Friday, 18 September 2009 23:47 (fourteen years ago) link

my display name is an honor student at ilx high school (sarahel), Friday, 18 September 2009 23:50 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh. Hm. This was just some girl's birthday, and they were friends with her. I remember going to this party and there was this classic indie irony fuq, Harold, with trucker cap and shit, and I asked, all excited and earnest, "Do you think it's real? Do you think it's really going to happen?" And he said, "I don't care," or something. And later that night I called him out, I said, "I know sometimes it's hard to communicate with people, I have trouble too, but are you just rude, is it a put on, or are you just awkward, or what is going on, Harold?"

And really the party was low-key because no one wanted to drive to Maryville, I guess.

But what's you're CJ story? He seems like a nice dude.

this kid is cool but oh man - throughout this whole convo i wanted to be like "listen dude i post to a MESSAGE BOARD i can't be having pointless convos about the order of albums in pfork lists in real life. i'm WAY PASSED YOU."

*rolling my damn eyes*: ok im pretty much furious with pitchfork's "end of decade" features
sargnt88: why
*rolling my damn eyes*: i mean the articles are pretty okay, the decade in indie is actually quite good, but these Top lists are AWFUL
*rolling my damn eyes*: for songs, they literally just picked about 400 songs for numbers 500-100 and randomly assigned numbers
*rolling my damn eyes*: there is literally no logical methodology for how these are selected
*rolling my damn eyes*: and then their top 20 was pretty off, to say the least
*rolling my damn eyes*: and then
*rolling my damn eyes*: this best albums of the decade list is such crap
*rolling my damn eyes*: like how are they honestly going to put Dear Science at like 140, when it was literally ALL THEY COULD TALK ABOUT last year
*rolling my damn eyes*: and then put a decent but not great dirty projectors album about 80 spots ahead of that
sargnt88: yeah there are some odd placements
*rolling my damn eyes*: and like
sargnt88: dp album was shockingly high
*rolling my damn eyes*: ok
*rolling my damn eyes*: vampire weekend?
*rolling my damn eyes*: great album!
*rolling my damn eyes*: absolute fluff
*rolling my damn eyes*: nowhere near number 70 or whatever they ranked it
sargnt88: dude it was at 30 or something
*rolling my damn eyes*: DEFINITELY not ahead of exploding hearts' "guitar romantic"
*rolling my damn eyes*: and where the FUCK is Interpol's "Turn Off the Bright Lights" and Strokes' "Is This It"?
*rolling my damn eyes*: what about Elephant?
*rolling my damn eyes*: how can you NOT put those in the top 50
sargnt88: well
sargnt88: there is still 25 left!
sargnt88: those 3 will all be there
*rolling my damn eyes*: 20
sargnt88: 20
*rolling my damn eyes*: i think elephant was listed already
*rolling my damn eyes*: like way back
*rolling my damn eyes*: interpol too
*rolling my damn eyes*: and also
*rolling my damn eyes*: like
*rolling my damn eyes*: im thrilled that the national had both alligator and boxer in
*rolling my damn eyes*: but boxer is a far superior album
*rolling my damn eyes*: and theres no reason for alligator to get top 50 and boxer to get shafted to like 180
*rolling my damn eyes*: BUT BEYOND ALL OF THAT
*rolling my damn eyes*: there is this
*rolling my damn eyes*: :
*rolling my damn eyes*: I actually think it [In Rainbows] might be their best. Better than OK Computer, better than Kid A.
*rolling my damn eyes*: ok
*rolling my damn eyes*: well
*rolling my damn eyes*: fine
*rolling my damn eyes*: you want to call In Rainbows Radiohead's best album?
*rolling my damn eyes*: youd be foolish
*rolling my damn eyes*: you probably just havent relistened to OK Computer in a while
*rolling my damn eyes*: but fine
*rolling my damn eyes*: claim that
*rolling my damn eyes*: but you CANT say that and then stick it at 21 of the decade
*rolling my damn eyes*: if youre arguing that In Rainbows is radiohead's BEST ALBUM, there is zero chance that isn't in the top 10, or even top 5, of the decade
sargnt88: yeeeeeeeeeeah it was kind of weird that they let that blurb run like that
*rolling my damn eyes*: and essentially his argument in favor of IR over OKC or bends is that since its newer and we havent had as much time with it its fresher to him and its also so much more approachable - just look at how many new radiohead fans there are!!!1!
*rolling my damn eyes*: FUCK THAT NOISE
*rolling my damn eyes*: animal collective arent approachable for shit and theyre raved and raved about
*rolling my damn eyes*: is merriweather post pavilion in this list yet?
sargnt88: nah it's coming
*rolling my damn eyes*: cause if not ill bet you that winds up top 10
*rolling my damn eyes*: yeah, and that is some sauce
*rolling my damn eyes*7: im sorry, look, its a decent album when you can finally get into it, and maybe it might hint at where one part of indie rock is moving towards, this freshly avant-garde, hard to appreciate but worth the effort kind of sound
*rolling my damn eyes*: but
*rolling my damn eyes*: COME ON
sargnt88: yeah i don't understand how they're rating it so high already
sargnt88: i dont have any feelings really about them but idk
*rolling my damn eyes*: its absurd
sargnt88: i thought feels & sung tongs were untoppable amongst AC people
*rolling my damn eyes*: look i can get high and enjoy animal collective but only in REALLY small doses
*rolling my damn eyes*: theyre really really excruciatingly hard to enjoy
*rolling my damn eyes*: and i wont even begin to deny that a good good portion of their song catalogue is bullshit noise and you can call it "artsy" or whatever if you want but let's be honest no one is really being impressed with a big fan of AC
*rolling my damn eyes*: i'll talk pulk/pull over any ac song any day because at least when radiohead does songs comprised mostly of noise it's fucking RIDICULOUS the way the sound penetrates your ears and that song honestly makes you feel like you can sense the ripples of the sound waves in and out as they enter your ear
*rolling my damn eyes*: /end rant
sargnt88: yes well
sargnt88: kid a is going to be number 1
sargnt88: so don't cry too hard
sargnt88: discovery will probs be #2
*rolling my damn eyes*: they just really arent helping their rep as elitist pricks who talk more out of their ass than with logic

i never understood the appeal of later kraftwerk. the early stuff with michael rother and before was great experimental and occasionally wildly improvised music. but from autobahn on they were just cashing in with boring repetitive electronic music with simplistic tunes.

Which brings to mind this point in the narrative:

2.5. The media is extremely liberal and FOX is the only conservative voice there is.

This is why 'Fair & Balanced' is so important to them. Because the media is extremely liberal the only way to be fair is for FOX to be extremely conservative, and thus help to balance out the overarching narrative of news media-wide.

Of course the thought that any corporate-funded news channel in America is truly liberal is the biggest joke of all.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 03:22 (thirteen years ago) link

and don't forget procedural generation (recently I've been loving this Wizards of Wor-style fantasy shooter that has procedurally generated levels)

I think Rohmer's honorary new wave? Just because he's ten years older than those dudes, he wrote for Cahiers and was coming at film-making with a similar mindset. I think of New Waves as

1. Smart guys at Cahiers who wrote smart stuff about movies and then decided to make some.
2. Those guys' friends.
3. Left Banke people?

bamcquern, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 04:00 (thirteen years ago) link

it's those people and more

and rohmer's early shit is definitely new wave. 'le signe de leo' or whatever it was called.

but i don't think any movie made in 1968-9 era is new wave: wouldn't call truffaut's or godard's late 60s films new wave either

it was a p specific late 50s/early 60s thing to do with low budgets, newness, youthiness...

the new wave included all kinds of forgotten people like pierre kast, jean-pierre mocky, jacques rozier

[tbh the left bank dudes fit into it pretty dodgily coz they'd been around since the early 1950s, but they do fit i guess]

I’ll put you in a f *ckin Weingarten you c*nt! (history mayne), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 08:25 (thirteen years ago) link

To wrap up, we congratulate you because in 3 weeks you will be able to celebrate being CEO of JTC for one year! How satisfied are you personally, looking back on this year, and what would you like to achieve in the coming years?

The thing about JTC and agencies such as EDB and Spring is that they are part of the same value chain. Their role lies in defining and developing Singapore’s future. This is the main aspect that drives me!

The reorganization that we undertook last year has certainly helped us. All the aforementioned initiatives and ideas have been developed as a result of this. So we have made progress but we still have a long way to go. We have to position JTC as a driver of innovation too, rather than efficiency alone. This is now taking shape and we are optimistic that we will be able to deal with the “challops” that will arise. Challops is what we define as the mix of challenges and opportunities that the future will bring.

Remember how big of a thing "challenging opinions"/challops used to be on ILX? Now no one talks about them anymore. It's a sad state of affairs.

Even if it was confusing because there were two different things simultaneously being called "challenging opinions."

i think the majority of opinions posted on this site nowadays could be categorized as one of the two types of challops.

tomscocca [1:13 PM] "Blue Velvet is terrible" is just a challop.

drew [1:13 PM] What is a challop

Samer [1:14 PM] drew: challenging opinion, i think

barry [1:14 PM] does a challop differ from a hot take?

Tommy Craggs [1:14 PM] "blue velvet" is a favorite of film-school types because it allows them to sneer at the rubes

tomscocca [1:14 PM] A hot take is a reaction to an event.

Tommy Craggs [1:14 PM] hence: "jeff koons: the movie"

marchman [1:14 PM] A challop is a challenging opinion that the person offering it doesn't actually believe, or expect anyone to believe he believes

tomscocca [1:14 PM] A challop is something that the person carries always around waiting to deploy.

Burneko [1:15 PM] blue velvet isn't even genuinely weird; it's superficially weird, and actually boring as hell

billy haisley [1:15 PM] blue velvet is way too straightforward to be a film-school type favorite

marchman [1:15 PM] "Blue Velvet is trash" is definitely a challop

marchman [1:15 PM] It's not weird at all, it's a very conventional movie

Tommy Craggs [1:15 PM] that's a challop

marchman [1:15 PM] It's just exceptionally well done

Tommy Craggs [1:15 PM] "blue velvet is not weird" is a challop

tomscocca [1:15 PM] Never imagined Deadspin would be so fired up for Columbus Day.

barry [1:16 PM] can't we start a "Deadspin olds" room and take this conversation there?

marchman [1:16 PM] How is it weird? It's bog standard suburban anomie

drew [1:16 PM] Stop saying challop. Now I want seafood

Burneko [1:16 PM] hahah

tomscocca [1:16 PM] "Anomie" Jesus Christ Marchman.

harvilla [1:16 PM] hot take: the word 'challop' sucks

"Such a lively character" He is like a perfect composite of all the worst aspects of every pretentious bore you could meet in a lifetime and his movies are childish fucking idiotic garbage.

Oh pish posh. He exploited the potential of cinema much more than either Chaplin or Keaton (both of whom, yes, exploited it exceedingly well and have many masterpieces under their belts). Tati may have surpassed Lewis on that level but he lacks Lewis' grotesque personality which is essential to his life-affirming effect. I'm reminded of something Richard Barrios's disdain for Al Jolson (a key Lewis progenitor) in The Singing Fool: "Charisma, when applied this relentlessly, becomes oppressive." But yo, Richard, that's precisely why we go to the movies (or listen to, I don't know, Morrissey): to witness a gargantuan, out of control ego as a way to measure the contours of our own steady paths. If I wanted an even-keeled experience, I'd knock on my neighbor's door and ask to borrow some sugar.

P.S. Pizza is stupid and boring.

An Apology For Shakespeare: Bold New Book Defends Poetry & Classic Literature, as Antidote to Culture of “Vanishing Ideals”

S.A. Joseph’s ‘An Apology for Shakespeare’ proves that the diminishing popularity of poetry, its themes and wider classic literature is a vital part of modern society’s rapid downfall. In a world where Satan’s influence runs high, the book and its explorations seek to reassert God’s influence. Joseph considers Shakespeare to be the great poet of all time and a “master of the arts”; someone whose words and concepts can still heal the world hundreds of years after they were created.

I've seen many (and even love some) of the featured films but I still have yet to watch a MST3K. I dunno, if a movie is quip-inducing I guess I just prefer to generate the quips myself alongside whoever I'm watching it with.
