Awesome thread. I've been looking for that Australian overlay for years.

SOME STATES THAT GET THEIR BORDER FUDGED BY CARELESS CARTOGRAPHERS:

ALASKA - Aluetian Islands are frequently left off and misspelled.
ARKANSAS - Has two indentions: One in the northeast corner and one in the southwest.
DELAWARE - Is this really a state?
FLORIDA - That little part that juts up into Georgia a bit.
GEORGIA - See above
HAWAII - Oahu and three other little circles does not make a map of Hawaii.
IOWA - Has a sizable bulge on the eastern side.
MISSOURI - don't forget the boot heel!

Man, some of those old electoral maps look strange in today's context.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 13:58 (sixteen years ago) link

MINNESOTA - That little tic of a state park that you can only get to via Canada.
NEVADA - Has six sides, not four.
NEW MEXICO - The panhandle down near El Paso.
NEW YORK - Long Island, surprisingly enough. It's like the Tasmania of the Empire State.
SOUTH DAKOTA - Not a perfect rectangle, thanks to the Missouri River.
WEST VIRGINIA - Wheeling is not in Ohio.
WISCONSIN - Does not have an upper peninsula.

I'll tell you the problem with this thread: every time I find a new map, I have to scan back through all the previously posted images to make sure I'm not doubling up. So I'm going to throw this out there. If I double up, I'm sorry. But I'm not going back through those again until it's just for fun, not for work. And if you double up, that's cool with me too.

HEY I was just looking for this the other day!!!!

Was having heated discussion about how much of the land you drive by that isn't a state or federal park but is, say, empty fields or unused or deserted/demolished properties...how much of it is privately owned?

State and Nat't parks and Indian reservations and whatever else qualifies as federal land, that's one thing. But just normal lots that aren't those things...does anyone know about ownership stats? I can't figure out how to find out in a general kind of way.

I'm not much of a real estate person, Laurel, but the best thing I can think of is to look at zoning maps for individual districts/towns/counties. in the US you can usually find them on county websites, and the helpful ones will break it down as military, , state-owned, town-owned, conservation land, etc. on a micro level. a lot of unused land is privately owned but designated by the government as open space, meaning that for aesthetic or environmental reasons, the landowner isn't allowed to build on it. but a lot of government land (like state parks) is also considered open space, and I don't know where you'd find statistics on public vs. private open space.

b. O.A.R. formed at Thomas Sprigg Wooton High School in Rockville, Maryland.
c. Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, from Annapolis Maryland.

Reading what the No. 2 and 3 beers are per state is where this really starts looking flawed.

I live in a Bud Lite state where they say Blue Moon and Sam Adams are the runners-up. They aren't. It's Bud Lite, Miller Lite, Coors Lite. Every bar in this state has those three on tap while those other two you can only find at hoity-toity locations such as Applebee's.

This is an attempt to maximize the most noteworthy restaurant chain (with an emphasis on fast food where possible) associated with each state. Could mean it was founded there. Could mean it's headquartered there. Could mean both. There were some tough calls (click here for more detail on the decision-making process), see if you agree with them. Again, this was done with an eye towards businesses with local resonance but national notoriety.

I kind of joke about having grown up in the middle of nowhere, but my home county is #3 on the least connected counties in the 48 states and the county 15 miles north is #1. They are #8 and #3, respectively, on the least connected to population list.

The county north of me is #7 on the least connected list for all 50 states - there are some places in Hawaii, roughly 2500 miles from the coast of California - that are quicker to get to.

How are all those state university systems considered "private employers"?

Brad C., Sunday, 25 November 2018 19:36 (five years ago) link

I don't think this answers Brad's question, but

For the purposes of our analysis, we treated some state government employers like public universities as independent organizations, in keeping with how states frequently identify and compare company headcounts. Military bases were excluded from the list. In many cases, employee counts for the various colleges, laboratories, and medical centers falling under a single university system were combined. This was because these systems frequently attribute employees from the university and medical centers together. However, when a spokesperson from the medical centers or universities identified the organizations as distinct employers, they were counted separately.

Would say maybe Minnetonka or Excelsior over Edina for MN, in that genre.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Thursday, 31 October 2019 23:34 (four years ago) link

I spent a week in Edina one night, so I'm completely on board with that one.

Council Bluffs had to be a hard #2 behind Cedar Rapids.

How Jeff City can come out ahead of Branson, Ferguson or Raytown must really say something. (I've never had any problems there.)

Some people say my town is less than desirable due to the fact that on some nights, you can go outside in your yard and catch a big whiff of Pine Bluff.

And I don't know what the fuck Turkey Creek is, but the fact that Bastrop could top any of the cities I mentioned above shows you how rigged Louisiana's results must've been. Seriously. We used to take family trips to Monroe (which has to be in the Top 10) and Bastrop would wake me up, it smelled so bad. One of those gray towns where everything's made of aluminum and there's always the sound of a diesel engine rumbling in the distance.

Ok but I have lived in Virginia for 40+ years and never seen a lemon pie served on Thanksgiving. 8 years in Missouri I saw exactly zero blueberry pies served on Thanksgiving. Blueberries are not even remotely seasonal, people!

The pies they are not talking about are pumpkin and apple (both seasonal and classic). Of those pies, only pecan pie belongs in a Thanksgiving tableau.

Fourth of July? Sure, bring your cherry, key lime, blueberry pies. They are appropriate then. But not Thanksgiving, sheesh.

sorry, my computer died in the middle of this, i think, so i went to bed! this story is not that hilarious, i was trying to be tongue in cheek

cancun

it was like, 1990. or 1991 or 1988. around there. i was 5 to 7 years old? my family flew to cancun. it was the first and only time i ever traveled out of the country with them. i remember four things about it. first, in the airport in cancun, my dad and i were pissing next to each other at urinals, which was already weird, and then i saw a big cockroach in the urinal and was startled and afraid to pee on it. second, we were walking in some street market and a big older guy kept pointing at me and calling me a bambino. as i already knew that babe ruth had an AKA "the bambino", i understood this as a sort of compliment. third, i had orange juice and i didn't think it was good. my mom said it's because they didn't put sugar in it. fourth, i threw up all over the place on a beach, and then as we were all packing up and walking off, someone new walked up to our big open space and put their beach chair right in the middle of the puke

The whole "visited here / stayed here" thing threw me off too. I "stayed" in a motel room in Ohio once before continuing the drive into Kentucky the next day while I have "visited" Georgia, spending most of a day touring the Coca-Cola and Carter museums in Atlanta. Should Ohio be worth more points? I finally decided no.

Poor Maryland and Delaware the only states where I don't think my feet ever touched the ground. They're very easy to drive through.

I really need to hit the Northwest sometime.
