xp mostly the dashboard. tumblroo for ipad isn't bad (not great either), the official app on iphone mostly sucks.

official app for ipod/iphone p good for when you don't want to look at the pictures tho.

I'm not big on the dashboard, but that's just me. You lose the theme, everything's all blended together. I prefer just hopping through bookmarks.

Also, some people post like 10000000 things a day while others post every other day or so. It's really easy to miss the one really cool post in the sea of all the others, so I prefer to just go the actual page of the people I'm following.

oh, okay. you don't need to upgrade your account to use custom css. and i've never seen a way to upload a stylesheet as a separate file to a tumblr, but you can just put the css in <style></style> tags in the <head></head> section of yr page

if you really want yr stylesheet to be in its own file, you can save it to some other web host and pull it into yr tumblr by using a <link> tag in the <head></head> section too

ok, second straight weekend of working hours on a gif, reducing it below tumblr's stupid size limits, and hitting submit over and over for an hour while tumblr refuses to post it, no matter how small and shitty quality I make it.

it could be the gif not tubmlr - i had a similar experience trying to upload one to tinypic - feel like maybe it gets corrupted in such a way that it appears huge to the site yr trying to upload it to

maybe try opening and modifying then resaving in fireworks

i dont mean to drive you into a life of crime or anything but at least for the mac pirating creative suite is super easy now in that you can download the trial from adobes website then follow some v simple instructions found in serial box and other places im sure to crack the licence - of course the problem could be tumblrs - but why dont you just link to the tiny pic hosted vrs

honestly though, even if that gif WOULD upload (it's 400x320, 480kb or so...and the even shittier version that's only 410kb also won't upload), my beef with tumblr is just the 500kb max. because for some reason tumblr won't allow that either. it's like once it decides it doesn't like your gif, there's no way to post it as a photo. you CAN post it embedded in a text post, but then no one will ever see it because in other people's dashboard your post just shows up as text with a little icon that signals that the post contains an image.

one more thing about the size limits: i can understand why they'd put a cap on the filesize, just to keep things loading quickly. but i def DON'T understand why they also have a cap on the dimensions (it can't be bigger than 500 px in either direction, basically), especially when they don't put that same cap on non-moving images. what's the problem with uploading a large-dimension gif if it's still under 500kb?

this is a really slow process, but one thing that helps is to just explore around tumblr and find blogs that similar to your own, or just share a general aesthetic similarity of any kind. then, follow them, "like" their images, and reblog them every once in a while if you can, too (i'm really bad at that last part because i'm narcissistic enough to want to post only my own shit on my tumblr). eventually they'll notice you and follow you back in appreciation, i've found.

I have another tumblr (dancehallqueens.tumblr.com) that is just me posting songs/youtubes of women-in-reggae/dancehall so I don't follow or like any other tumblrs with that username, but I pick up totally random likes and reblogs fairly often.

what i am trying to do is create a romance novel with very few words, just images, collages, videos, links, and quotes from that weird romance writer's phrasebook. it's going to be like building a strangely shaped fort and then sitting in it for a while, but that fort WILL have a shape and a certain architecture that reflects...i dunno....my aesthetic sensibilities or something. i have a lot of images i have scanned/need to scan from old books and whatnot.

I can vouch for lagoon's internet mastery, his guidance made my now-dormant twitter what it is today

so for the last several months, my tumblr, which i'd redirected to weinventyou.net, usually wouldn't load. but every once in a while, it would, so i just chalked it up to really shitty go daddy hosting. today i finally realized what the problem was - in the tumblr settings, you can test your custom domain name. when i did, it said that my domain's "A-record is not pointing to Tumblr." i just fixed it, although it can take up to 48 hours for the fix to go through.

not trying to land on the braggin thread, but i was wondering wtf was going on because i've lost hundreds of followers over the last few months, even as i keep posting stuff that gets lots of notes (one of the walking dudes gifs keeps getting revived by teenz in various continents and it's up to 32,000!). now i realize that i wasn't gaining many new followers because no one could actually access my website.

Tumblr is more visually driven than either Facebook or twitter. On Facebook you follow real life "friends", on twitter you follow a mix of real life friends and celebrities like levar burton, on tumblr you follow mysterious strangers who have good visual taste. Facebook and twitter don't let you take control over the functionality of your home page, tumblr gives you a lot of flexibility to make it look and feel unique.

Even though I just puked out a paragraph directly comparing the three, I don't think it makes much sense to do so. Facebook, twitter and tumblr are all good at different things, and designed with different goals in mind. Twitter is a great news aggregator (if you use it like that). Facebook can sorta be used like that, but it's not really its purpose. And unless you have the most boring tumblr account ever (one that only follows journalistic tumblrs or something), tumblr is a terrible news aggregator.

tumblr is a good place to hide and look at pictures
facebook is for peoplewatching/anthropological lols and also keeping up with far-flung irl friends
twitter is something i don't really use very much but i hear it's very useful for people in certain lines of work

you have to install the WWW::Tumblr module from CPAN which, unfortunately, isn't the most straightforward thing. you can try just typing 'cpan WWW::Tumblr' on the commandline, and see what happens. you might have to configure it if it's the first time you've run it.

if that doesn't work, maybe take a look at this guide: http://www.cpan.org/modules/INSTALL.html

if you couldnt get that to work, i fatpacked the script (put all the dependencies in one file). you'll still need to edit the code at the very bottom of the file with your tumblr credentials

i'd double check that the username/email/pw/url are correct. the url should be like "http://whatever.tumblr.com";, then the username would be "whatever", then the email and password you use to log in

yah i cut and pasted them into the login field just to make sure i wasnt hallucinating, do you have to give permission for api access or something

how tumblr doesn't have drag/drop file uploading is incomprehensible to me, i haven't even found a good app or chrome ext or anything

idk if youre on a mac but it did look like there was an app in the app store that supported drag n drop, dont recall what it was called, just search for tumblr, there were only a few results

yeah there was a desktop app that had drag/drop for files but it didn't really streamline the posting process at all & was v glitchy, def gonna check out tumbloadr b/c i basically have nothing on my desktop but huge folders of images waiting to be posted

Wow, I am scanning/queueing/annotating over and over and over. I wish I had folders full of images but the scanning part is so time consuming and boring that I can only handle doing like 6 images at a time.

Maybe I just have a shitty scanner, but these yearbooks are fucking gigantic, and I have to hold them in place or the whole page doesn't scan/it falls off the scanner b/c it's way too heavy to sit there by itself.

i don't like blogs that are just a big column of youtubes. it really slows down scrolling for anyone w/o a ton of ram.

and i kind of like picking a screenshot instead of the usual junk in youtube embeds, which i don't find attractive.

it is... the whole "set a date for your post to be published" thing is so messed up

thanks for the suggestion barthes. i actually tried it that way but i didn't like that the images would show up smaller, esp on single-page-posts.

i guess i could have just said "post scheduler."

the default when you choose it is "tomorrow, 10am," but often it seems like "tomorrow" is relative ie when it hits midnight it's rescheduled for the next day's tomorrow lol

That was the second time today I saw a page like that. I followed a Facebook link to the new Bad Lip Synch debate video, and instead of just having the YouTube out in the open, someone had made screen grabs of the clip and copied-n-pasted the nonsensical phrases said in the video above the candidates heads.

Which looked stupid, gave away the joaks and made the reader scroll scroll scroll to the very bottom to finally see the goddammed Youtube video.

if tumblr ever comes back up again, i am very pleased to announce that the journey into 77 has begun. this is probably my favorite yearbook (at least so far) because it has the most interesting variety of people and also 1977. kinda dreading the dull early 60s.
