MUSIC CRITCS ARE THE ART OF PRETEND FORGETFULLNESS

I like that one sahara album i got in the mail. i will probably never hear rilo kiley. much like i will never hear xgau faves olds 97 either. wait, that was there name, right? eh, wotever.
-- scott seward (skotro...), September 4th, 2004 6:57 AM.

brontosaur may well be right about the second song being crummy - you'll notice that, in my first post,i said the album gets dull after 3 or 4 songs." so maybe by "the first 3 songs" later, i actually meant "the first 3 songs i liked," as in tracks #1, 3, and 4. i haven't played the CD for a few weeks, so i forget, but that sounds right, actually. i also forget whether i ever got as far as # 10.
-- chuck (cedd...), September 4th, 2004 6:31 AM.

Missy on the Carly Simon rework, which I otherwise totally forget. Was that Janet's go deep?

I do try to stop myself re: "pretend forgetfullness" but its hard.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 September 2004 21:34 (nineteen years ago) link

chuck's posts sometime move from "pretend forgetfullness" to "lazy pomposity" (where you genuinely don't remember to the point where you should probably not be talking about the subject at hand)

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 September 2004 21:35 (nineteen years ago) link

though complaining about this kind of loudmouthed ignorance on the noise board seems ironic

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 September 2004 21:35 (nineteen years ago) link

"loudmouthed ignorance"?

I think I sometimes write like that, but then again I own about 10,000 records. I forget stuff all the time. Maybe it looks like some kind of pose but trust me it's not. that's what happens when you have a ton of records. I forget names/details all the time these days. the fact taht I'm old and drink like a fish doesn't help either.

Reed Moore (diamond), Saturday, 4 September 2004 21:46 (nineteen years ago) link

it usually always strikes me as a sort of "gah I can't be bothered to remember it so it doesn't matter" sort of pose.

and some people remember all too well!

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 4 September 2004 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I realize of course that many critics own 50,000 records and are liable to forget what track 7 from Tears For Fears' Elemental sounds like!

don't love it, but i think it's not bad -- especially the song about how the dolphins make him cry, and that quotes "idiot wind" or whatever that dylan song about killing a man in italy and inheriting a million bucks was. also the song that sounds like "letter b" off of *sesame street* is okay. i haven't played it in a couple years, so i kinda forget the rest. but he's a pretty good singer, in the dobie gray tradition. (best defense of the band ever, and gutsiest, was by i believe daniel smith - a lead review in *vibe*, i think!! she basically argued that they were a soul band, which kinda makes sense.)

(and yeah, i meant *cracked rearview.* i suppose they might have some earlier indie albums maybe, right? i never heard those. *cracked reareview* has a pretty funny title, too, come to think of it.)

Anthony is totally right about "soothing." It's my new age record of the year, I think - which is saying a lot, because this was a really good year for gothic scandinavian metal, among other muzaks. (Wolf Eyes are better than most such stuff thanx to lots of cute little clanks and clunks, which I swear come off like hooks to me. scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't know much about black metal, unfortunately. There was a point in my life where I liked Emperor, Mayhem, some Burzum and like.. Dimmu Borgir. Maybe approaching it now, I'd see it differently. At that point (early high school) it didn't have the melody i found and enjoyed in punk. i haven't really ever looked back at black metal. i should. i ought to re-read those threads where siegbran makes big lists.

"psuedo-respected" is a cryptic way of saying that a few people on ilm come rattling to his defense when he's in an argument, in a vitriolic way that strikes me as strange... but i don't get the sense that he's known or respected very far outside of rock-crit circles. i guess that means "somewhat respected" rather than the vague and condescending "psuedo-respected."

whatever.

yeah, he wasn't the best example.

i'm not saying chuck goes on about his stature, indeed he seems deliberately to seek to deflate that sort of thing. it's just that i think there a lot of people (a LOT of critics, including some i don't even like much as writers) who could do a lot more with the village voice music pages.... it seems like a missed opportunity to me.

i probably should exit this argument now because i'm feeling sort of bad about it.

it's totally a novel. it's a fictionalized memoir of the road trip he undertook for that spin piece, and if it's "about" anything, it's about himself and a trio of girlfriends. it's not, and it's not trying to be, a piece of journalism. it's not, and it's not trying to be, a work of non-fiction. it's a novel starring a guy named chuck who has shared a lot of experiences with the guy who wrote the book.

nteresting! Though maybe it would halfway make sense if the station started with Sonic Youth's cover of Alice's "Hallowed Be My Name" or "Black Juju" or "Halo of Flies" or whatever it was they covered on some late '80s bootleg or b-side or something (I have a vague memory of this). But anyway, I kind of don't understand the whole "one artist station" pandora concept to begin with, since it's physically impossible for me to turn on my pandora station without automatically thinking every time about ten more artists or songs I want to add, every single fucking time. How do people avoid that? And more importantly, why would they want to? Aren't stations more interesting if they cover all your tastes, not just a small fraction of them? (I was thinking maybe a "music to fall asleep to" station might have practical uses, but beyond that, I'm completely stumped.)

Vahid you're typically arguing yourself into a corner here ... I think the main influence of IDM on current sounds is the use of self-consciously non-musical sounds to substitute for traditional elements of a track ... have to put my hands up and admit that I've never owned an IDM record and could be talking out my ass here, but my friends used to subject me to it on occasion.

i never understood the appeal of pinback, talk about the whole being less than the sum of its parts.
i saw three mile pilot's last tour in a small club, half attended. seriously, one of the most overlooked bands ever. saw thingy's last show in SF in cory brown's living room in cole valley (with the extra glenns and jim yoshi pileup). they did a medley of misfits covers.

so pinback comes to town for their first show and i notice that they're playing the bottom of the hill, so i say "okay, let's head down early around 8:30, grab tickets and check out the openers else we can head to the parkside." so we show up at 8:30, there's a line around the block (which i've never seen at the BOTH) and that's just for willcall. the show had been sold out for weeks.

noone has ever explained this to me.

i heard the first ep, it was okay. i think i remember it, well it was either that or the new zz top, or the jets' "make it real". buy my book!

But (and I hate to admit this...) whatever that CD that came out just after he died...I didn't like that one nearly as much. It was a whole different thing. "Another Thought" wasn't it? Early 90's.

But I was completely amazed to learn later that he'd actually taken a couple stabs at dance music earlier on. That was just weird. Certainly he was a gifted individual in the creative sense. Also I could have sworn I bought some EP of his of earlier on that was very ambient. Holy hell, I just remembered this. Black sleeve. Red letters. Am I wrong? Wow, I had totally forgotten that.

Today, I like the entire first half of Debbie Gibson's second album a truckload of pistachios better than "One More Cockfarming Motherfucking Ratbastard Son of a Whoring Time". Tomorrow I'll be driving to NYC with a disco-loving Israeli-Russian nihilist and I wouldn't be surprised if the new Daft Punk sounded great to me then. Well, I would be surprised, because the record's fucking gay, but fuck, "Aerodynamic" sounded pretty good last time I listened. Point's that about-faces in taste are fun, the astonishment at liking something you hated just ups the like. Point's also that a bevy of peeps buy Mariah albums and presumably some of them like them and presumably 6 or 8 or at least 2 have gotta have their heads on shoulders not thoroughly implanted up their assholes, so why not try and be one of those 2? She did have that one good song a few years ago with video with the swinging out over water on a happy tire, which I'd really like to know the name of if anyone's up for recollecting. Thanks.

i recognize that as an editor chuck had approved some interesting stuff, but as a writer he comes across as falling back on a species of anti-intellectualism way too often, and this "i don't really remember, whatever" schtick is just one manifestation of that.

amateurist, Friday, 8 August 2008 09:22 (fifteen years ago) link

the other, worse manifestation is the whole "it just ROCKS, and if I have to explain it to you dude..." stuff he pulled on nearly every thread in which we spent any time locking heads.

(an unrelated, even more annoying trait is the infantile contrarianism which i always found it difficult to prove. i mean, it seemed to suffuse his whole taste, at least as he elaborated it in print. but he could always just say "but i really do like this stuff" and there wasn't much i could say.)

amateurist, Friday, 8 August 2008 09:24 (fifteen years ago) link

i also get the feeling that his rhetoric is 80% cultivating and sustaining a persona and maybe 20% actual argumentation.

amateurist, Friday, 8 August 2008 09:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I never had much use for chuck as a critic but I really like him as an ilm poster. when he cares enough to bother he gets people to question their assumptions about music and defend their positions in an engaging way. which is probably why he was such a good editor at the voice.

I disagree with him at almost every step of the way on the swings w/ a vengeance thread but the discussion was interesting (or maybe it should just get filed under "two a-holes arguing over xgau and who cares what he sez anyways"):
