Officer' Estrada Trades Obscenities

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: January 5, 2007
Filed at 5:17 p.m. ET

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) -- Former ''CHiPs'' star Erik Estrada got into an expletive-laced shouting match with a man who called him Emilio Estevez amid the filming of a reality television series.

Estrada, who was sworn in as a reserve officer last month for CBS Corp.'s ''Armed & Famous'' show, was in an ambulance with Randall R. Sims, 53, when the exchange unfolded Wednesday night.

The 57-year-old actor entered the ambulance after being asked to remove handcuffs from Sims, who had been stabbed in the leg during a domestic dispute. After addressing Estrada as Estevez, another Hollywood actor, Sims said he didn't want to appear on the show, which also stars La Toya Jackson, Jack Osbourne, Jason ''Wee Man'' Acuna and Trish Stratus.

The confrontation erupted after Sims, who led a successful push in 2004 to rename a Muncie street in honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., told Estrada he knew nothing about King and had only been in Muncie ''for two days,'' The Star Press reported Friday.

Estrada told Sims he'd been in town for six weeks and said he grew up in Spanish Harlem -- a rough Manhattan neighborhood King mentioned in his landmark 1967 speech calling for an end to the Vietnam War.

An exchange of obscenities followed before Estrada left the ambulance.

Muncie Police Chief Joe Winkle told The Associated Press on Friday that he hadn't seen footage of the confrontation, but had spoken with Estrada.

''We talked about it last night with him, the fact that that's something we encounter all the time, that you have to get a little thicker skin,'' Winkle said. ''With any new officer we would tell them, `Hey, that's not how we conduct ourselves, don't get caught up in the moment, we're the ones who are professionals.' That's what we did with Erik and I think he truly understood that.''

one of my students is on a behavior contract, meaning on the 2nd offense i can send him out if he breaks any of these rules

1. not moving around the class w/o permission
2. not interrupting the teacher
3. following the regular classroom rules

i sent him out yesterday for repeated and endless fucking-around, and today i get this email

Thanks, for info I have arrested him for his pattern of behavior. There is a penal code section that specifically address this behavior in the class room. I only use this for a select few. But based on his pattern this is warranted.

The concept of the theriomorphic god and especially of the bull god, however, may all too easily efface the very important distinctions between a god named, described, represented, and worshipped in animal form, a real animal worshipped as a god, animal symbols and animal maskes used in the cult, and finally the consecrated animal destined for sacrifice. Animal worship of the kind found in the Egyptian Apis cult is unknown in Greece. (Greek Religion, 1985).

'Doomsday' vault design unveiled

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42551000/gif/_42551989_seed_vault_416.gif

The final design for a "doomsday" vault that will house seeds from all known varieties of food crops has been unveiled by the Norwegian government.

The Svalbard International Seed Vault will be built into a mountainside on a remote island near the North Pole.

The vault aims to safeguard the world's agriculture from future catastrophes, such as nuclear war, asteroid strikes and climate change.

Construction begins in March, and the seed bank is scheduled to open in 2008.

The Norwegian government is paying the $5m (£2.5m) construction costs of the vault, which will have enough space to house three million seed samples.

Edward III (edward iii), Friday, 9 February 2007 14:56 (twelve years ago) link

Death Race can still be found at the Museaum Of the Moving Image in Queens.

Tempest shouldn't be played in MAME unless you have the right controller. Like how I can play marble madness because I use a trackball.

the kwisatz bacharach (sanskrit), Friday, 9 February 2007 16:34 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know...I didn't fully check it out. They used to have the whole history...now the really old games you could never play anyway(too rare, like Space War) are upstairs in the museum and downstairs they have both video games, including Star Wars, and some home consoles. It's crazy, because my girlfriend works at museums, she gets in free, so we go there and can check out the exhibits, some of which are fucking amazing, and watch a movie (most recently...X: The Unheard Music, which was fucking amazing) and play games, though you have to pay for them and I haven't had the time to.

Barcade in williamsburg had a Spy Hunter, I think.

Edward III (edward iii), Friday, 9 February 2007 17:34 (twelve years ago) link

Barcade was my idea. During the dot-com boon I was like, "i'm gonna open a bar that's gonna have 80s music and vintage arcade games and all the dot com geeks are gonna love it because they can play dig-dug instead of talking to girls and I'm gonna call it Barcade". Then 4 years later it opened in Williamsburg...friends were calling me like "hey, is that your bar?". Nope. My other idea was an obvious one...a movie theater in Williamsburg. It's being built right now.

A Simoom is a strong, dry, dust-laden desert wind that blows in the Sahara, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, and the desert of Arabia. It is also known as a samiel, a simoun, or a simoon. Its temperature may exceed 54°C and the humidity may fall below 10%. The storm moves in cyclone (circular) form, carrying clouds of dust and sand, and produces on men and animals a suffocating effect. The name means “poison wind” and is given because the sudden onset of a simoom may also cause heat stroke. This is attributed to the fact that the hot wind brings more heat to the body than can be disposed of by the evaporation of perspiration. Simoom kills like lightning. The desert soil is a sea of flaming sand which is why Arabs wear turbans and robes and stay in their tents during the day. The Simoom is a deadly wind which stifles travellers and all sorts of animals, unless they fall prostrate on the ground. This wind rises between the 15th of June and the 15th of August. It whistles with great violence there, appears red and inflamed and kills every living thing that it strikes. But the death which it causes is not its most horrifying effect. The bodies of those who die by it are dissolved, without losing, however, their shape of color, so that it would seem as though they were asleep. If one touches these bodies, the part which is touched remains in the hand.

Herodotus writes of the Simoon, a red wind which blows across the Sahara. It enters and coagulates in the locks of pistols. Sand from this wind has been known to blow as far north as the southen coast of England. The wind can appear so thick that Mariners have referred to it as the "Sea of Blood."

1) Charles Bonnet Syndrome: old people hallucinating munching cows and blue streamer-fish.

2)
Nifheim Niflheim ("Land of Mists") is the realm of ice and cold in Norse mythology. It is located north of Ginnungagap and there dwells the hrimthursar (Frost Giants) and here is also located Hel. The tree Yggdrasill has a root here in the spring Hvergelmir, and it is gnawed away at by the serpent Nidhogg.

Niflheim is ruled by the goddess Hel, daughter to Loki by the giantess Angrboda, personally appointed by Odin to rule over Niflheim. Hel, also called Hela in some cases, rules over Helheim in addition to this. Half of her body is normal, while the other half is that of a rotting corpse. Possibly, Helheim and Niflheim are the same thing, but this will not fit in with the nine worlds of Norse mythology mentioned in various mythology books. Niflheim is broken into several layers. One level designed for heroes and gods, where Hel would preside over the festivities for them. Another is reserved for the elderly, the sick, and those who are unable to die gloriously in battle and enter Valhalla. The lowest level resembled the Christian version of Hell[citation needed], where the wicked are forced to live forever.

"Malice in Wonderland" made me think of that time when a friend invited me at a theater showing animation films of her first and second year animation university class. I should take the time to write about this, maybe it's too late, but now I'll just say I enjoyed the representation of a multitude of psychological motivations and textures on possible realities: I made very nice dreams , that nite.

man from China is to finally have a huge tumour removed today after discovering it 17 years ago.

Huang Liqian, 58, first discovered a bizarre growth on the back of his neck in 1990, but chose to ignore it.

However, as the years rolled on, it continued to increase in size at a rapid pace, with the growth ballooning to 15kg.

Liqian developed symptoms such as severe pain and restricted movement two years ago, so he decided that it was time to find out what was happening to his body.

After finally approaching doctors with the growing problem, his medical diagnosis revealed that he had a neck tumour.

Liqian was taken to the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongging University of Medical Services in southwest China's Chongging, where he is due to have the tumour removed.

http://www.nme.com/news/the-rolling-stones/27531

It's the interview the whole world is talking about today (April 4) - Keith Richards telling NME what rock 'n' roll has taught him.

And yes, this is the interview where the guitar legend admits to snorting the ashes of his own father.

The article features in this week's issue of NME - on UK newsstands now - which also includes:

* A comprehensive on the road feature with My Chemical Romance on their UK tour

* Glastonbury Festival's reaction to the news Noel Gallagher wants to play this year's bash

* Look behind the secrets of Arctic Monkeys' new album sleeve

all that plus our comprehensive gig guide and reviews section.

Now on NME.COM you can read our Keith Richards interview in full, as The Rolling Stones' guitarist tells us what rock 'n' roll has taught him...

The biggest cliché in rock'n'roll is...

There's no roll
"They forgot the roll and they only kept the rock. The roll's the whole damn thing dude, the rock is nothing, deal with it, the roll is king. Unfortunately most cats don't get behind the roll."

The three things I guarantee I'll never do again are...

1) Heroin
"The one thing I'll never do is the dope. I won't do that again. Everything else is up for grabs. Why wouldn't I do the dope again? Because I've been there and done that, and it's fucking painful, man. The other schmucks are doing it all the time and I pity them."

2) Climb coconut trees
"I wasn't climbing a tree [when he fell, suffering concussion and subsequently having to undergo brain surgery], I was sitting on a fucking shrub. I was sitting on that shrub again today, but I happened to fall off it the wrong way that day."

3) Be trepanned
"I wouldn't want to do that again. It's having your fucking skull cut open. It's what I had to go through. Yes, I've been trepanned. That's quite an interesting experience, especially for my brain surgeon,
who saw my thoughts flying around in my brain. I've got pictures of it mate, yeah. They cut my head, brain, skull open, went in and pulled out the crap, and put some of it back in again. But that's the way it is, I mean, shit, Keith Richards has got to do everything once."

Never trust anyone...

Who tells you you've six months to live
"I mean some doctor told me I had six months to live and I went to their funeral. The obit columns are of quite an interest to me these days. I don't trust doctors. It's not to say there ain't some good ones, but on a general level, no, I wouldn't trust 'em at all."

You don't know the meaning of the dark side until...

It goes really bad
"Then you never wake up to find out. Several times I've thought, 'This is it.' And it's quite a comforting feeling, actually, thinking, 'Jesus Christ I'm getting out of it now.' I've no pretensions about immortality - I'm the same as everyone else - same as you, same as everybody, I'm the same old bugger, just kind of lucky. I was Number 1 on the Who's Likely To Die list for 10 years, I mean I was really disappointed when I fell off the list."

My favourite new band is...

I ain't got any, they're all a load of crap
"Everyone's a load of crap. They're all trying to be somebody else and they ain't being themselves. The Libertines, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party? Load of crap, load a crap. Posers, rubbish. There ain't nothing out there that's worth shit. I listen to the real shit, I don't listen to bullshit. I listen to my shit, baby, Motörhead, reggae, Moroccan music. All kinds of shit."

The band I most wish I was in is...

The Rolling Stones
"They're the only band I care about, I can't wait to get back on the road with those bastards, who happen to miraculously be one of the best bands in the world. I dunno how the hell it happened. I mean you're playing beside Charlie Watts - yeah baby, you've gotta gig on. We're doing the Isle Of Wight this summer and that great, it's only down the road - I live in West Wittering, so it's just across the bay, you know."

The best guitar solo ever committed to record is...

Chuck Berry's solo on 'Little Queenie'
"I mean, whoooah! His guitar playing is just so sublime. But then
I could go with Scotty Moore and his solo on 'Mystery Train' with Elvis, when you start me on this shit you really start me going. I'll go on all night."

The best time I've ever had on drugs was...

I can't remember
"It's those nights you forget, but you know what happened because there are 15 other people telling you that you were hanging naked upside down from the chandelier. The other best bit is the morning after, when you wake up and realise you've had a great time. I mean drugs have got really nothing to do with life. Drugs are there if you want them, and it's not a big fucking deal."

The worst time I've had on drugs was...

When someone put strychnine in my dope
"It was in Switzerland. I was totally comatose, but I was totally awake,
I could listen to everyone, and they were like, 'He's dead, he's dead!' waving their fingers and pushing me about, and I was thinking, 'I'm not dead!'. So that's sort of the worst one. But I got out of that, I mean otherwise I wouldn't be talking to you. But yeah, bad shit is bad shit. The strangest thing I've tried to snort? My father. I snorted my father. He was cremated and I couldn't resist grinding him up with a little bit of blow. My dad wouldn't have cared, he didn't give a shit.
It went down pretty well, and I'm still alive."

The actor I'd most like to play me in a film is...

Johnny Depp
"Johnny and I had a great time, loads of fun. I expected [filming the third 'Pirates Of The Carribean' movie, 'At World's End'] to be fun but it was even more fun than I had imagined. I was driving through the driveway to Walt Disney studios the other day thinking, 'Jesus Christ, I'm following in the footsteps of Mickey Mouse here.' No, it was brilliant, I was there for four or five days and I did my bit, and Johnny was his usual graceful self and we're both the same size, so we swapped clothes and there it is. I met Johnny and he was just another one of my son's friends, 'This is Brian, this is Debbie, this is Johnny', and we met like that, years ago. I didn't even know what he did, I thought he was a failed rock'n'roll artist, and then I started to see some of his work and then he called me up said, 'Hey Jesus Christ, I've copied you to do 'Pirates...',' which I thought was the gentlemanly way of letting me know. I mean no wonder he paid for all the beers. I didn't realise I was being observed."

The best thing I ever saw was...

When a lady's got her legs wide open. La-di-da
"I don't wanna go there because I'd have to name the ladies and there's far too many. I mean I did go there, but I ain't going there with you."

My best advice to young bands is...

Grow up
"I mean who do you think you're gonna be? It's a matter of finding out who you wanna be. So to a band, I don't care how old or young they are, find out who you wanna be. If they wanna just be famous, or a star, that's easy, for a day or two, if you wanna be in a band then you'd better check out the shit all the way back. My advice for Pete Doherty in particular, though, is that he should shut the fuck up and leave her [Kate Moss] alone. I don't know the man, all I know is he's pushing his luck, and there it is, but so is Kate, who I know very well. Kate wants to play with bad boys, and she's done one, and then another one, and then another one. Badabing, badabang, badaboom! She'll live, the boys will die. It's just copycat bullshit. I did it because that was the way I did it, now people think it's a way of life."

I want to make a record as good as...

'Heartbreak Hotel'
"I mean there's a million of them. I guess '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction''s got to be close, and 'Beast Of Burden' maybe, yeah, and 'Tumbling Dice', 'Honky Tonk Women'. I'm starting to reel them off and it's not fair to all my other babies."

The coolest rock star in the world, ever is...

Me!
"I mean, right, it goes without saying really, doesn't it? I mean
I don't think I'm cool, it's other people that tell me I'm cool, I'm just being who I am. Just be yourself is all I can say, the rest of it's a fucking joke. 'Elegantly wasted' blah-blah-blah, I've had all of that. If you've gotta be cool be cool with yourself. If you've gotta think about being cool, you ain't cool."

I would never have my hair cut like...

Anyone except me
"I've never had my hair cut by anybody, I do it all myself. I've never let anybody touch it. My mum used to give me two shillings and sixpence every two weeks to get my hair cut, and I would just ignore the barber and chop it off myself and keep the fucking money. Spent it on cigs. And a bit of booze, probably, and I'd try and impress a bird here or there, too."

I'll stop playing when...

I croak
"That's it. I don't see any reason why it should stop if there's those of 'em still out there that wanna see it and I wanna play it, let's get it together. I mean I get antsy just sitting in one place for too long. I've had a few brushes with old death, he's kind of a friend of mine, actually, and er, if you hang around me you'll have a brush with it too."

I don't think I'd want to sit through a feature length doc about it, but it's a great 5 minute clip! Maybe it would make a good 1/2 hr doc if they stretched a couple of interviews out a bit. I lolled at the comments along the lines of "this is not representative of tr00 circuit bending", when one of the featured oddballs is reed ghazala! Mainly I liked it b/c it made it look like a lot of fun! (though I'm way too anal & fussy to pull any of my instruments to pieces to try it out) and because it has Cynthia on it, who I've bought stuff off, and who I like loads.

rrrobyn, Monday, 30 April 2007 23:11 (twelve years ago) link

I love that we are talking about Umatics on ILX!

High-band Umatics are cheap and have a better colour reproduction and lower noise than VHS. Go into any TV station, postproduction facility or ad agency and you will see a Umat player. I'm sure it's all going to DVD now but I was outputting to Umatics for broadvast as late as 2003.

Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

huh. I guess it wasn't them. the PE/Herb thing is credited to Evolution Control Committee, for some reason I thought that group "evolved" into EBN, but looking at the wikis for both, it's not the same dudes.

they (ECC) did do that Dan Rather "Rocked by Rape" thing that's pretty much the exact same m.o. as Emergency Broadcast.

love fluffernutters, no homo. there's a store in NY called Peanut Butter & Co that sells super yummers flavored marshmallow cream and peanut butters. strawberry fluff and white chocolate peanut butter are both really good. i've never been to the store, but wifee had the Elvis when she was there. Grilled Peanut Butter, Jelly, Banana and Bacon. she couldn't finish it.

Cat grows wings

A Chinese woman claims her cat has grown wings.

http://www.ananova.com/images/web/989102.jpg

Granny Feng's tom cat has sprouted two hairy 4ins long wings, reports the Huashang News.

"At first, they were just two bumps, but they started to grow quickly, and after a month there were two wings," she said.

Feng, of Xianyang city, Shaanxi province, says the wings, which contain bones, make her pet look like a 'cat angel'.

Her explanation is that the cat sprouted the wings after being sexually harassed.

"A month ago, many female cats in heat came to harass him, and then the wings started to grow," she said.

However, experts say the phenomenon is more likely down to a gene mutation, and say it shouldn't prevent the cat living a normal life.

Granny grows horn

A Chinese grandmother has a five inch horn growing out of her forehead.

http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_2335990.html

The horn curves downward and looks like the stalk of a pumpkin, reports the Yangcheng Evening Post.

Granny Zhao, 95, of Zhanjiang city, Guangdong province, says it first appeared three years ago.

"At first, it was only a mole, but it gradually grew and became like a horn," she said.

Zhao says the horn causes her little trouble except to affect her vision slightly: "It causes me no discomfort, but blocks part of my view."

But her family are hoping that medical experts can explain the phenomenon.

That interview really took me back. I cooked for the cast/crew of The Sore Losers during part of the Mississippi shoot...I was half-dozing on the couch one day and listening to Macro Dub Infection when Jack came in and said "What is this?" I don't think he disliked it, it was just alien to him. I asked him if he wanted me to turn it off, but he said "no, no, that's cool."

Weird old 12-in-1 Gameboy cartridge says on the back "MADE IN JAPAM". On which Warioworld is listed in the table of contents as Super Mario 3 and Ultra Man is listed as both Ultra Man and Super Man. So technically it's only 11-in-1.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS BEWARE THE MENACE !!!

Tween bandits terrorize shoppers in P’Heights
By Dana Rubinstein
The Brooklyn Paper

A band of little girls is making a mockery of their gender’s reputation as “sugar, spice and everything nice” by terrorizing full-grown adults in Prospect Heights, sparking a police investigation into the attacks and raising concern among residents that the crimes might comprise a new and unnerving trend.

In at least three instances over the past two months, a group of adolescents headed by one or two young girls has approached pedestrians and either hit them over the head with a blunt object or pointed what looked to be a toy gun in their direction.

The perpetrators demanded nothing. Indeed, they appeared to have no motive beyond the sheer fun of harassing pedestrians, according to victims and the police.

“It seems odd,” said Deputy Inspector John Cosgrove, commanding officer of the 77th Precinct, where all three incidents occurred. “Generally, there’s a demand for money, or some other accompanying demand, that’s the stimulant for an assault … Or there’s generally some back story that makes the attack seem plausible. Absent that, it seems odd.”

Cosgrove added that the prominent role of young girls is “uncommon.”

Victims seemed just as bewildered.

“They literally came out of nowhere,” said Jess Eddy, a 29-year-old graphic designer who was only two blocks from home when she was assaulted on May 15 at about 10 pm.

“I was on Prospect Place, near Vanderbilt Avenue, when I got struck on the head from behind,” she said. “I turned around, and there were six to eight kids, with two little girls in front, who were between 12 and 13 years old.
Naomi Village: In the heart of the Poconos

“They were waiting for me to do something. I was taken aback. I mean, the normal reaction is to attack, but they were so young, and girls.”

After hesitating, Eddy rushed at the girls, prompting a counter-attack by two slightly older boys who had been lurking in the background.

When they tried to hit Eddy on the head, she yelled “like a crazy woman,” and one of the boys pulled out a small silver gun that Eddy presumed was a toy because of its size and the boy’s age. Eddy fled across the street. The kids ran in the opposite direction.

Eddy has since heard of similar attacks and told The Brooklyn Paper, “I fear it’s the start of a trend.”

Indeed, her story is eerily similar to that of a woman who calls herself “Flo” and posted her account on a neighborhood message board, www.dailyheights.com.

Four days following Eddy’s attack, Flo was walking along St. Johns Place, between Washington and Classon avenues, at around 4 pm, when she was “struck in the head” with an unidentified object.

“I was stunned. Literally,” she wrote.

When Flo turned around, she saw three or four young girls between 15 and 20 years old fleeing across the street. Flo followed, but to no avail.

The third assault occurred about two months ago to a man named Raymond Alberts and his wife as they were walking along St. Marks Place between Classon and Grand avenues.

“As we were walking, we saw a kid hiding behind a Dumpster,” Alberts told The Paper. “My wife says, ‘He’s got a gun.’”

Alberts, 56, estimated the kid was between 13 and 17 years old. He was accompanied by an “overweight boy” of about the same age.

“I turn around, and he points the silver gun at me … We kept on walking … He was just smiling.”

Alberts promptly reported the incident to the cops, who sent out an officer to investigate.

“He comes back and says it was a toy gun, and he said it wasn’t a boy, it was an ugly girl,” said Alberts.

In retrospect, Alberts believes that “If they had arrested the kid, these other attacks wouldn’t have happened.”

Cosgrove said the precinct is investigating the assaults. And Councilwoman Letitia James (D–Fort Greene) reminded residents to “alert elected officials and come to precinct council meetings.”

But one neighbor had more homespun advice.

“I guess, kids do bad things at times,” said Bob Biegen of the Prospect Heights Association.

“It would be great if they could be caught and someone could just sit down and talk to them about life and how it should be lived.”

Ahh sweet Prospect Heights, my homeland. I'll be on the lookout for ugly girls, then.

I assume most of you did what I did, which was to spend a couple of hours creating an elaborate battlefield set-up with transformers, he-man toys and other larger figures as generals/field officers and smaller figures as infantry (those cheap plastic soldiers/cowboys/indians were especially good for this). Tanks and other mechanized vehicles and artillery were constructed out of Legos, and perhaps there would be a small air force from Construx. When all this was done I would realize I didn't have 30 hands and couldn't make a particularly fun battle out of all this.

http://plugins.timeshard.com/angstrolooper/

What is it ?

AngstroLooper is effectively a rediculously long delay, it partly emulates an old style tape loop system – but rather than trying to model something that it isn't, AngstroLooper is designed to be easy to use tool on a laptop while playing live.

I have used the looper on a few types of material, I'm sure there are others but I tend to just get trapped in a melting brainspace as soon as I start using it.

Ambient : build up detailed pads by feeding synth patches in and out to create big stereo soundscapes. Or pretend you are Robert Fripp on 'No Pussyfooting' for hours on end ... the choice is yours.

Glitch / Annoyingbeat : Feed loops and parts of stuff into the looper and randomly stab at the loop length thing, build up big weird and odd beats that don't sound like anything else. Personally, I like things that don't sound like anything else.

LOVE THIS SO F'IN MUCH

Last year, Lovitz related, a drunken Dick strolled up to his table at Ago in West Hollywood, rudely downed his guests' peach liqueur drinks, and "looked at me and said, 'I put the "Phil Hartman hex" on you - you're the next one to die.' I said, 'What did you say?' and he repeated it. I wanted to punch his face in, but I don't hit women."

"Hank Aaron, a baseball player, is sometimes also considered to have an Erdős–Bacon number of 3, as he and Erdős both autographed the same baseball (for which he is jokingly referred to as having Erdős number of 1)."

Jon Lewis, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:07 (twelve years ago) link

so yesterday i did the manual labor until like 9pm. drywall, framing all the shit. then i was like, i think i'll go climb a 12300 ft. mountain. (this is where things get gringi5h!)
so i pack my pack, pack my pipe (exhaust pipe with a banana. that joke is still funny even when it's my car!) and i drove up to the mt. got on the trail solo at 10:38 last night (course nobody wants to night hike. wtf). hiked till 12:25. threw the bag down to sleep at like 11300 ft. smoked, perfect. woke up at 8. summited and back to truck by 12::22 this afternoon. anyways, 2 things happened. chipmunks almost ate me alive in the fashion of a swarm of red ants or giant flock of birds. on the summit, those fuckers were after me. well, basically i stayed still and then they started crawling on me and licking my sweat. grooooosss! OMG!
so i thought, hey, i'm like the chipmunk whisperer (heady points?). BUT THEN. walking off the summit, oh look what is right in the trail on the ridge of a mt... a big fucking big horn sheep. he was pissed. he was sort of tryin to step to me. which is hilarious because as brett knows, when you hike alone, especially at night but really anytime, you will have a recurring thought about an animal attacking you and you killing it with bare hands, a walking stick, and your knife. always the knife. then you'd be on the cover of a local newspaper and you mentally write the outline for the story and think about the quotes you'll say to the reporters. brett, if i'm wrong, tell me. so last night i was thinking if a big horn started charging me, my quote would be "hey, i just gave it the matador treatment, i held out my pack, let him hit that, then sunk my knife in his side and his momentum ripped him open from shoulder to hip. no big deal, this sort of thing just happens in the wild. "
so there the sheep is, and i'm like "hey, dont ram me" and he keeps like walking closer to me trying to punk me. meanwhile i have my knife in one hand and my cam in the other. and i was near a tree i figured i'd use for cover if shit got real. i remember mentally changing the newspaper story to incorporate the tree, while it was happening. but i just gave him space and he chilled.

Do you know how jellyfish reproduce? I just saw a nature show last night, so crazy. The world is so deeply weird, how do we even live in it??

Males & female release their sex cells into water, some eventually meet, that part isn't so weird. BUT the fertilized thingy lands on the bottom and anchors there and grows into a polyp with fronds and then morphs into a...column of baby jellyfishes, stacked up together like fringed muffin papers. Then they start convulsing and separate one by one -- and they are all exact clones!!! God.

Laurel, Monday, 15 October 2007 01:17 (twelve years ago) link

is SO cool

river wolf, Monday, 15 October 2007 01:22 (twelve years ago) link

Also, there's a variety of jfish that can REGRESS in age, if it gets too hungry, or the water turns too cold. It actually DEVOLVES little by little and turns into an unspecified clump of cells and then REGROWS from scratch. Nature has ALL the good tricks, maaaan.

rw, was flying over russia on the way to hong kong. everybody on the plane was asleep, the cabin was in total darkness. I got curious about what was going on outside, randomly opened my window shade and *blam* cherskogo mountain range.

if we mated like jellyfish, the bad dates thread would be a lot shorter.

Edward III, Monday, 15 October 2007 01:51 (twelve years ago) link

although that regressing in age sounds eerily familiar...

AND IT WAS ON THE LEAST-EXOTIC BEACH ON THE WHOLE ISLAND!

HE WAS JUST LAYING THERE ON HIS BACK WITH HIS EYES CLOSED SOAKING UP THE SUN!

OCCASIONALLY HE WOULD SCRATCH HIS BELLY WITH HIS LITTLE FLIPPER-HAND!

IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!

Van Halen play "Jump" live, using backing tapes for the oberheim synth parts of the original rekkid. The backing tapes play back at the RONG speed. The resulting cacophony is AWESOME.

Pashmina, Saturday, 20 October 2007 10:33 (twelve years ago) link

its also funny because the difference in speed isn't really noticeable but the pitch yes

Oh. I like all those words. I like "canoodling" because I heard it first in some old b&w movie with a happy, fat, friendy German grandfather who is like the flustered, bespectacled musician/conductor. He's so likeable and he says "canoodling" all the time.
