Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 05:53 (seventeen years ago) link

MAYBE!

(especially if someone finds out that the vocals are sung by RDJ himself)

better than Float On? which i heard on the radio on the way home from dinner.

I've moved on.... to Badi Assad's Chameleon.

I want to snuggle with Haikunym someday and have him tell me all his Brazilian secrets.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 07:14 (seventeen years ago) link

oh yeah, i have to hear badi.

i think i've only ever heard that ambient works cd once in my life. just DLed XTAL. pretty good. goes along well w/all the other early house/techno stuff i'm listening to. grassy ass.

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 07:33 (seventeen years ago) link

i concur with the thread's premise

Dr. Alicia D. Titsovich (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 15:46 (seventeen years ago) link

wow, i can't believe i didn't own this album yet. it's pretty fucking amazing. i think the one time i listened to it i ended up taking a nap so i assumed it was boring sleepy time music. it's really just like a nice, mellow electro album. didn't realize there were so many beats on it. Ageispolis is kicking my ass right now.

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 17:47 (seventeen years ago) link

am0n (am0n), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Aphex Twin is kind of a ROCKIST electronic music, tho. Indie rockers who wouldn't be caught dead listening to Luomo or whatever still jerk off to the Chris Cunningham Directors Series DVD.

WTF is "The Night They Invented Champagne"?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:34 (seventeen years ago) link

i much prefer "green calx", "ptolemy" and "heliosphan" (my three favorites, in order)

"we are the music makers" - always thought this would sound awesome w/ sade singing over it.

"delphium" = honorable mention for heavy detroit techno vibes

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:45 (seventeen years ago) link

and yeah, SAW85-92 is great, but where's the love for polygon window?!? THAT was the best aphex shit ever, believe.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

sinker's awesome breakdown of techno as the secret bastard lovechild of "novelty music" (christmas singing cats, songs w/ cuckoo clocks, sound effects in pop songs, baby elephant dance, etc) to thread.

sorry, WRONG THREAD

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:49 (seventeen years ago) link

i might have the ATwin at home from my 'dutiful' phase.

Gigi, jaymc.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah. Never seen it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:18 (seventeen years ago) link

And the venerable Steve Shasta is right -- I really don't know that much about music at all.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:19 (seventeen years ago) link

no it's just silly revisionist statements like the your choice quote above typical of autoscripted ILX conjecture-wank.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Wait, what?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I can't tell what you're taking issue with. At first I thought it was my ignorance of Gigi, and I was like, fair enough, there's really a whole lot of music I've never heard, that's something I'll totally own up to, etc. ... But now I'm wondering whether it's the first part of my post about Aphex Twin vs. Luomo. I'm certainly not damning Aphex Twin -- I joined in the chorus saying that "Xtal" is great -- but I do think that RDJ, like most practitioners of "IDM," makes the kind of electronic music that rock fans often gravitate toward. I mean, you go to Reckless Records in Chicago, and their electronic section is mostly AFX, Squarepusher, Mouse on Mars, etc. That's all I'm saying. Morbius's comment that he found it odd for straight people to be listening to "these genres" was just really weird to me, since my stereotype of an Aphex Twin fan is, like, TOMBOT.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:57 (seventeen years ago) link

YES to your last point. i guess i don't confuse ILX tendencies with active music listeners i converse with "IRL" (aside from jaxon but we all know how nuts he is).

but i like "xtal" a lot, or i did when i made this dumb thread.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:03 (seventeen years ago) link

wait, millar is straight?

and what (ooo), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:06 (seventeen years ago) link

man i hope tombot doesn't see this thread. his techno credentials go far further than a lot of britishes, even.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:07 (seventeen years ago) link

You're conflating my points. One of the token electronic acts for rock dudes is Aphex Twin. But not all Aphex Twin fans are rock dudes. I'd wager that most Aphex Twin fans, however, are straight. TOMBOT = an Aphex Twin fan who is straight but who is not a rock dude.

Saw2 is overrated, Saw8592 beats it up with eight drunken gods. I actually think fucking FSOL's Lifeforms is closer to "timeless" than Saw2, because it just sounds dated, whereas saw2 sounds like two hours of bullshit jerkoff sub-eno/glass beatless horseshit with about eight total minutes of fairly impressive engineering

says the guy with the aphex username

cutty, Saturday, 18 September 2010 17:54 (thirteen years ago) link

This is not an Aphex related username. He has nothing to do with the Tregaskins! Jeez, do you just believe that Richard writes all electronic music, everywhere? Listen to the music, man, not the hype, or who you think wrote it, no matter whose name is on the publishing rights etc. etc. and so forth amen shit I gotta get a leg on if I'm going to this Rephlex party thing tonight.

XTAL is like...dimly lit warehouse just outside the M25, 4am, one security guard, one Ford Fiesta parked outside.

listening to "Evil at Play" and uh what am I missing here? yeah he sampled it, it's library music so it's supposed to be sampled, clearly there's way more to the track than the sample, this is nowhere near what say Daft Punk and LCD Soundsystem do regularly

frogbs, Friday, 16 February 2024 15:16 (two months ago) link

Yeah seems like a clickbait title do get people to check out his "how was it made" process which is frankly far more interesting (also the bulk of the video) and the reason I posted it here!

totally stupid, oh no he used a sample. I mean, no shit.

The video where they remake it in ableton or whatever is pretty cool, though!

Agree that this is probably the greatest song of all time
