from the email box:
Hey, Jon, I went out for drinks with YYYYY & the XXXXX crew but I'm guessing it wasn't the same place you went. (Hopefully yours was better--"Daddy's" was strictly squaresville--like, guys who looked like Loggins and Messina playing feelgood records from the 70s and a kind of sports bar ambience.)

Laurel, he is a bro.
you wanted to go to legion, dude.
― hstencil, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)
I was at daddys and left
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)
daddys sucks most nights now. controversial?
― ian, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)
legion was kinda terrible(good company tho)
― bell_labs, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)
What was wrong with Legion? The quality of the DJing has dropped a lot as of late but then again you guys just want to hear creedence and go home.....
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)
Maybe someone will come dancing with me tomorrow
I want to drink at places where people go to drink, not to see and be seen & talk to the bartender for 10 minutes while I'm trying to get a drink at a bar that's not even busy.
― Laurel, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)
Which is also the bartender's fault, mind you.
Gather! Make merry! But pls remember that the primary function of a BAR is to serve DRINKS.
― Laurel, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)
also it was just a big ugly room painted black and decorated with ugly ikea fixtures...shooting for "hip" and "austere" and missing the mark with just lookin cheap. i would take a plain old dive over one with pretensions of coolness any day.
― bell_labs, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)
Laurel, this is your stock complaint. Find one new thing to hate about Daddy's, kthx. Like that they won't let you smoke weed on the patio.
― ian, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)
harefield road is nice and homey, fake irish bar, you can smoke weed out back. wayyyyyyyy better than legion.
― bell_labs, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)
Actually I was complaining about Legion this time! :D It took so long to get served last time that everyone was leaving by the time my tequila came.
― Laurel, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)
i'd rather drink at the roebling tea room than almost anywhere else in williamsburg. good music (albeit from an ipod), spacious, rarely crowded, and BEER & BRATWURST SPECIAL.

harefield rd is a sports bar for hipsters and the brunch sucks
roebling tea room is kind of a pricey date (rip catwon ;_;)
you guys have weird opinions! except for laurel who is predictable
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)
legion was also giving me haircut anxiety. i like bars where i don't feel like a tool going in my dorky work clothes.
― bell_labs, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)
it's hilarious that anybody thinks anything has actually changed at daddy's over the past 5 years.
― hstencil, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)
Also daddy's is full of people who don't like it when we play photo hunt
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)
Tuesday might be only night I'm free this week, so where duz we drink?
― Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)
i like drinking at a place where all u gotta do is buy the bartender some thai food and you get free drinks for you and a friend all night.
xp i'm not sayin you gotta eat dinner, hipstere; most of their beer is $5 and it's a nice environment.
xp AGAIN to hstencil: MORE CROWDED = LESS FUN;.
― ian, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)
also it's hilarious that going out to drink causes y'all so much anxiety.
I have seen one good "DJ" (aka record picker) at daddy's ever.
I've started to get buybacks though
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

― hstencil, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)
I'm not anxious. I just refuse to go back to Daddy's. Also I dislike it when the bartender's main job doesn't seem to be serving people alcohol. Being an awesome hipster and posing behind the bar might be what they pay you for in Wburg but it's not a vote of confidence for me.

― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)
anyways, i haven't really had problems getting served at daddy's, the main problems are that it gets really really crowded fridays/saturdays and the fear of running into exes amirite

― max, Monday, 26 November 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)
Ben, my gripe with Daddy's is more like:
* 2 or 3 female bartenders twisting their toes into the floor at the back wall, chatting, while people crowd up to be served. * slow moving like molasses, generally supah inefficient -- like, you'd get fired from a kitchen for moving one lemon wedge at a time, but at Daddy's it's like they're sleepwalking to the margarita machine. * bartender looks me in the eye, turns away to serve other side of bar, comes back and serves a guy next to me who wasn't there before, and guy not only does not say "she was here first" but actually nudges me out of the way so he can lean on the bar. Bad manners all 'round.
― Laurel, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

That reminds me that I did once see a 5-yr old try to give his mother a beer at a rugby game. He went to the cooler and got it and brought it back to her and said "HERE MAMA. YOU WANT A BEER?" and she was like "Oh, haha, um, THANK you, Charlie, but Mama's not drinking today! Mama has to drive, so put that back, okay?" "BUT MAMA, I HAVE TO GET YOU A BEER" "Er, yes, sweetheart, but not today. Give that back to the nice lady." Etc. Good times.

it struck me, after seeing that bit yesterday, that perhaps the problem is that too many people, notincluding laurel, consider daddy's to be something other than a local bar. its not meant to be a fucking hotspot! and the service you get at daddy's is on par with any local place. hang out and get to know people and you wont have a problem (save on weekend nights when all those nonlocals and "goin out tonight" folks turn round)
and no, never served the PBR. stopped serving bk lager when bk brewery supported big development in dwntown bk. do not have the makings for apple martinis. no jaegermeister. as it was xplained to me a long time ago, the policy was to just have regular drinks and to not cater to children and nightlife sorts of crowds that want cheap beer and gross shit that leads to vomiting and idiocy.
i saw sD get some fine service there the other day.

Polly is one of the few people who called me "danny" because she grew up in a town near me and was friends with my little cousin, who always called referred to me as "my cousin danny" and she recognized me as his cousin at some !!! show or something years ago.
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 20:49 (sixteen years ago)
Aw! After I stopped going in on the reg I was there for the first time in like 6 months and John remembered me as a former happy hour regular. Then I saw him on the street in midtown and he said hi by name. Impressive! Once we watched Oprah at like 4am lol.
