11. Where does 'wetness' come from? — vaginapagina 18:37
Hi all, really basic question that I have never known the answer to; when a vagina-owner gets aroused, where exactly does the wetness come from?…

Performance Finishes
Consumers now demand that their products are both attractive and functional. We provide high specification finishes including water repellents, moisture wicking and climate control products to add value and performance to textile substrates.

Putin, of course, is not someone who takes such jibes lying down. "Mr McCain fought in Vietnam. I think that he has enough blood of peaceful citizens on his hands. It must be impossible for him to live without these disgusting scenes anymore … He was captured and they kept him not just in prison, but in a pit for several years. Anyone would go nuts."

The Caucasian Shepherd, or Caucasian Ovcharka is the most brutal Russian dog breed. It is a large, even-tempered dog with powerful and muscular body, bear-look face, deeply set oval dark eyes, round-shaped cropped ears and low carried long tail. It has a thick and water resistant double coat in shades of gray, brindle, yellow, rust, red or white (click for video). The coat may be longer or shorter depending on the region the dog comes from.

Good dancers too.

Totally my favourite kind of dog, btw. Because they obviously need a lot of space and a lot of food they have always been quite high-status pets in cities. When a lot of the old guard emigrated or downsized into small flats they let them loose in Moscow so you used to get packs of them living in the parks and hanging around near markets. It was quite an experience to have these things that look like small-to-medium-sized bears barreling after you in search of treats but they really are the sweetest, silliest creatures. Unfortunately some moron attacked one when it was sleeping, iirc, and it made fairly short work of her so they ended up shooting them all.

VENIET IMBER (imago), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 08:32 (ten years ago) link

As an addendum, I'm still working on the same assignment; just that all involved have come to England. I did a lesson at a certain fairly well-to-do hotel yesterday, which involved helping a 15 year-old girl with her English coursework, which in turn involved the full explanation, discussion & analysis of a certain Andrew Marvell poem that may or may not contain sweetness being rolled up into a ball. Still debating whether it was a good or bad thing that the billionaire dad was listening in from the next room

i am not that sort of birdwatcher, although i did stumble across sevenoaks' ibis recently, and have also stumbled across a purple heron at dungeness before. seems much more satisfying when you don't have gps coordinates and a ritualistic cavalcade of parka'd telescope-wielding pricks pinpointing the exact location of that lesser tawny-streaked marsh warbler or w/e

why don't more people like the cardiacs

no love deb weep (nakhchivan), Saturday, 14 February 2015 21:44 (nine years ago) link

well you see nakhers chum

cardiacs' music is extremely intense with unusual melodic sensibilities but a demented punkish energy - the former putting off typical punk types and the latter putting off classical or prog fans

they sit uneasily within the rock in opposition venn set - it's like asking why henry cow or koenjihyakkei don't have more fans. they demand lots of close listening and a level of commitment that most listeners just do not have

they also alienated every single major music magazine during their heyday and the press famously loathed them, probably because they did not want to make the effort to understand them & it was easier to demonise the freaks

they have had something of a revival in the discourse of late, mostly because it's being publicised just how many popular musicians are into them

not that sort of birdwatcher (imago), Sunday, 15 February 2015 13:17 (nine years ago) link

they aren't remotely like 'henry cow or koenjihyakkei' though, they make quirky indie rock music which is in a fairly recogniseable idiom to anyone who is familiar with indie rock

it would be more apt to wonder why they couldn't get at least some of the support that british sea power or whatever do, different generations but it isn't as if this country has a problem appreciating odd melodic rock music

no love deb weep (nakhchivan), Sunday, 15 February 2015 13:26 (nine years ago) link

played a few of their tracks on that youtube yesterday and there were quite a few comments from people who had heard them on radio 6 and been enraptured

this would seem to be a natural audience for them and it would be possible to imagine them being marketed a 'national treasure' to that set, had they not had the mark of cain from the trad music press

Cardiacs are also renowned for their startling performance style, which has been historically integrated (via video work, publicity, interviews and onstage presentation) with a vague and oppressive band mythology. The latter involves Cardiacs' record label and supposed management company, the Alphabet Business Concern - a repressive, controlling organisation (with a marked Edwardian character) which supervises (and restricts) Cardiacs' recording work and live appearances (as well as communicating band news and statements to the band's mailing list in florid and archaic corporatese). Several early 1980s video releases by Cardiacs – in particular The Consultant's Flower Garden and the clip for To Go Off and Things – provided video "evidence" that Alphabet ran Cardiacs' internal affairs in the manner of an Edwardian children's home (complete with behavioural problems and bullying).

The Alphabet Business Corporation shares some similarities with the "Cryptic Corporation" supposedly responsible for managing The Residents. As with the Cryptic Corporation, there is a strong probability that the Alphabet mythology is entirely fictional and that the band (often hailed as archetypal independent musicians) control all aspects of their work themselves. Alphabet's original representatives - or representative characters - were Cardiac's "sordid, waxy" manager The Consultant (real name James Stevens) and his assistant and band advisor "Miss Swift", both of whom made onstage appearances with Cardiacs during the 1980s.[1][17] In the late 1980s both The Consultant and Miss Swift left the Cardiacs organisation and were replaced by Mark Walmsley, who played a less public role (but did appear for inserts in the Maresnest concert video, expressing contempt for his charges and their music).

In performance, Cardiacs generally reject (or occasionally parody) standard rock band posturing. In keeping with the Alphabet mythology, the band's shows have instead featured behaviour which has been described as "therapeutic, surrealist pantomime", compared to absurdist theatre, and labelled "not so much theatrically eccentric as completely fucking neurotic". During any given performance, Tim Smith rants between and during numbers, acting out bizarre childlike ideas and emotions.[17][18][19][20] During the 1980s the band perfected a detailed stage act involving shabby lift attendant costumes, badly-applied clown make-up, Tim Smith's bullying of other band members (predominantly Jim Smith), and a final formal presentation of champagne and flowers by The Consultant and Miss Swift complete with confetti, taking place to "a euphoric sweep of saxophone and keyboards that wouldn’t seem out of place in a '70s cigar advert."[2][12][19] During the 1990s, the theatrical elements of the live show were toned down and the uniforms replaced by formal suits, although certain rituals (including the childlike mannerisms and Smith's ranting style) were retained.[3][4][6][7][12]

ref to normcore artistes like suede and radiohead who will have been influenced by them

They have?

Nut-bloody-rageous (Tom D.), Sunday, 15 February 2015 14:28 (nine years ago) link

they sit uneasily with any comparison. i'd go as far as to say they've created their own fairly distinct lineage of music that has eventually given rise to stuff like this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xX2rUUcs0G4

of course, one can draw superficial comparisons in the service of aggregation

that video was supposed to be cardiacs at their most self-consciously unusual, yet if you want something a little more...avant-classical, try the closing 4 minutes of this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4j6q1Svf30

SOME of their music is redolent of a sort of supercharged britpop in some superficial sense, but even when it is, it is something utterly other:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a820Xo4XdB8

they're ACCESSIBLE to normcore discourse precisely because they are so melodic - in rhythmic/lyrical regards they are a far more forbidding proposition, and even then their melodies are highly distinctive in construction

i agree that they're not necessarily marginal, because i think they're amazing, and that their songs work beautifully - they've been rendered marginal by certain bloody-minded aesthetic choices which i would defend

not that sort of birdwatcher (imago), Sunday, 15 February 2015 14:32 (nine years ago) link

my challenge to you nakhers is to find bands lying similarly on the periphery of the norm-rock discourse who have been similarly marginalised, with an equally fervent cult following

not that sort of birdwatcher (imago), Sunday, 15 February 2015 14:33 (nine years ago) link

the choices that frame them as weird seem more peripheral than integral to the idiom, it's not like they are this heat

the framing is oppositional but in another life they might have become quite popular had they been less dorky

they serve as an interesting case for the types of eccentricity that are tolerable to the british middle classs (mostly those involving whimsicality or anachronism)

no love deb weep (nakhchivan), Sunday, 15 February 2015 14:48 (nine years ago) link

Also sounds like the whims of certain tastemakers played a part

LJ's challenge makes me think of something like the tiger lillies, whose music isn't "difficult" or unusual at all but who still provoke a "fuck is this shit" reaction from ppl

content raggettator (wins), Sunday, 15 February 2015 14:56 (nine years ago) link

Lay off the face paint would appear to be the message

Nut-bloody-rageous (Tom D.), Sunday, 15 February 2015 14:58 (nine years ago) link

tiger lillies?! dear god

anyway,

they serve as an interesting case for the types of eccentricity that are tolerable to the british middle classs (mostly those involving whimsicality or anachronism)

ARE they tolerable to the british middle class? the 6 music listeners who have flocked to their side strike me as a minority. traditionally the reactions veer from intrigued to horrified with a smattering of obsessive adoration - don't think that's changed, or that the whole cardiacs package is now 'tolerable' to the middle class normcore hivemind. i reckon they have as much working class support as anything else - they're certainly from that milieu - and their whimsicality/anachronism is smeared and smudged under tonnes of, yeah, facepaint, fabricated incest rumours, a sense of earthy menace and an oversaturated production style that's just too much for most people

their role within the british pastoral is important, i'd say, but if bagpuss can get voted the UK's favourite TV show, how can cardiacs not achieve similar? - it is the confrontational weirdness, the unplaceability of it, even if the heart is in a similar place

N.B. the acceptable middle-class eccentricity of UK music from the last 50 years = david bowie

not that sort of birdwatcher (imago), Sunday, 15 February 2015 18:42 (nine years ago) link

that was the argument lj, that they are the wrong sort of eccentrics

no love deb weep (nakhchivan), Sunday, 15 February 2015 19:33 (nine years ago) link

though if they are abstracted from their rep and the overt dorkiness and oppositional framing, then just the music on its own terms is perfectly comprehensible or at least not insuperably weird to a bbc6 sort of audience

no love deb weep (nakhchivan), Sunday, 15 February 2015 19:36 (nine years ago) link

traditionally the reactions veer from intrigued to horrified with a smattering of obsessive adoration - don't think that's changed, or that the whole dulwich hamlet package is now 'tolerable' to the middle class normcore hivemind. i reckon they have as much working class support as anything else - they're certainly from that milieu - and their whimsicality/anachronism is smeared and smudged under tonnes of, yeah, communist sloganeering, fabricated transfer rumours, a sense of 'hardcore supporter' menace and an oversaturated fandom style that's just too much for most people.

There was no contract - the only document she signed was a non-disclosure form. She was ordered not to tell her friends about the job, nor to add any of them to the social media accounts she would run under pseudonyms.

“We had to write ‘ordinary posts’, about making cakes or music tracks we liked, but then every now and then throw in a political post about how the Kiev government is fascist, or that sort of thing,” she said.

sport is aesthetically consistent with my more shall we say formalist cultural regards,

my only problem with sport is the gender imbalance but sports have remedied other exclusions in the past and i have faith they'll continue to do so. plus i just overlook the fact i'm largely watching men rather than women because the sports themselves are so aesthetically pleasing

Jaggery had played Seattle before, though I was still in Hawaii when they were here last. The lead for this group is fronted by a truly dynamic vocalist, Singer Mali . . . and when I say that, it is with all the respect one might imagine… the music they play keeps the “prog” in mind, but is more attuned to that “prog-opera” I mentioned earlier in this piece… though I’m not intimately familiar with all the terms proggers use to describe their music, the lead-off piece sounded (to me) like “wicked chamber dirge” – some of the most impressive and powerful high-range vocal work I’ve heard in years.

Kayo Dot is an American avant-rock/experimental music group that was formed in 2003 by Toby Driver. They released their debut album Choirs of the Eye on John Zorn's Tzadik Records label that year. Tzadik's descriptive label on that album reads: "Kayo Dot powerfully integrates elements of modern classical composition with the layers of guitars and vocals more common to rock and metal. With a compositional map that is strict in form yet malleable in execution, Kayo Dot uses a vast array of instrumentation to create an exciting convergence of violence and serenity."

Since then, Kayo Dot's music has undergone several identity shifts, largely influenced by the band's constantly-changing lineup and instrumentation. One predominant element of Driver's compositional voice which remains consistent throughout all of Kayo Dot's output, however, is the band's use of abstract timing and performance cues. This lends to the music the element of "malleability" mentioned in Tzadik's description above.

The music of Kayo Dot is commonly categorized as post-metal, post-rock, progressive rock, or avant-garde. Their songs involve complex instrumentation (composed by singer and frontman Driver). They are substantially longer than typical rock songs, usually ranging from 8 to 18 minutes in length.

"Torture chamber pop." "Darkwave jazz." "Siren rock." These are a few of the many attempts to describe the sound of Jaggery, an art-rock collective which weaves harp, viola, piano, contrabass, and drum kit into a universe of its own, setting the scene for "one of the most beautiful voices in modern music." Powerful enough to harness the fiery churnings beneath a volcano as well as the ethereal light of a dying star, frontwoman Singer Mali's voice regularly leaves listeners viscerally stunned and with goosebumps.

dear robins, sparrows, and chickadees,

i write with news of noteworthy shows! as feathered things and forsythias get the spring party started, i am ready to join the excitement and burst open with new songs and collaborations. may will be bookended with performances that i am thrilled to share with the finally-thawed world!

our concert coincides with a temporary exhibit of some of Leonardo's works rarely seen this side of the ocean, and is not to be missed! and though we are always happy to play and collaborate on songs written mostly by singer Mali Sastri, for the first time ever, each of the band members has gotten a chance to write a song inspired by da Vinci for jaggery to play. i myself have written a song inspired by Leonardo's codex on the flight of birds, and i am super excited to debut it, especially with how amazing my bandmates make it sound!!!

regularly watch 3-cushion (carom) billiards on youtube - it's formalist near-perfection - a standardised table, no pockets, 3 balls and essentially only one rule and yet a multitude of methods and considerations arising at each visit to the baize, the sainted baize, the verdant carpet of dreams

tennis is a great formalist sport let down only by the physical limitations of the human body - but less so than in certain other sports

water polo is foul & dreadfully contrived and were rugby to not exist it'd probably be the worst sport in any formal sense, i feel such a void in my soul whenever i glimpse it

golf is anti-formalism but in a nice way

i'll listen to that song tomorrow :) it's too late for loud sounds now

but yeah, carom billiards. would very much like to own a table later in life - it is one of only a very few material ambitions i have

also while i hate rugby i actually, truly, think that afl is kinda ok-to-good based on what i've seen - it's formally much looser and more chaotic, and has a far more satisfying scoring system - spiritually much closer to the gaa sports than to the abysmal trench warfare of rugby

PLAN B LYRICS
"Ill Manors"

Let’s all go on an urban safari
We might see some illegal migrants
Oi look there’s a chav
That means council housed and violent
He’s got a hoodie on give him a hug
On second thoughts don’t you don’t wanna get mugged
Oh sh*t too late that was kinda dumb
Whose idea was that… stupid…
He’s got some front, ain’t we all
Be the joker, play the fool
What’s politics, ain’t it all
Smoke and mirrors, April Fools
All year round, all in all
Just another brick in the wall
Get away with murder in the schools
Use four letter swear words cause we’re cool
We’re all drinkers, drug takers
Every single one of us buns the herb
Keep on believing what you read in the papers
Council estate kids, scum of the earth
Think you know how life on a council estate is,
From everything you’ve ever read about it or heard
Well it’s all true, so stay where you’re safest
There’s no need to step foot out the burbs
Truth is here, we’re all disturbed
We cheat and lie its so absurd
Feed the fear that’s what we’ve learned
Fuel the fire, let it burn

Oi! I said oi!
What you looking at, you little rich boy!
We’re poor round here, run home and lock your door
Don’t come round here no more, you could get robbed for
Real (yeah) because my manors ill
My manors ill
For real
Yeah you know my manors ill, my manors ill!

You could get lost in this concrete jungle
New builds keep springing up outta nowhere
Take the wrong turn down a one way junction
Find yourself in the hood nobody goes there
We got an Eco-friendly government,
They preserve our natural habitat
Built an entire Olympic village
Around where we live without pulling down any flats
Give us free money and we don’t pay any tax
NHS healthcare, yes please many thanks
People get stabbed round here, there’s many shanks
Nice knowing someone’s got our backs when we get attacked
Don’t bloody give me that
I’ll lose my temper
Who closed down the community centre?
I kill time there used to be a member
What will I do now until September?
School’s out, rules out, get your bloody tools out
London’s burning, I predict a riot
Fall in fall out
Who knows what it’s all about
What did that chief say? Something bout the kaisers
Kids on the street no they never miss a beat, never miss a cheap
Thrill when it comes their way
Let’s go looting
No not Luton
The high street’s closer, cover your face
And if we see any rich kids on the way
We’ll make ‘em wish they stayed inside
Here’s a charge for congestion, everybody’s gotta pay
Do what Boris does… rob them blind

Oi! I said oi!
What you looking at, you little rich boy?
We’re poor round here, run home and lock your door!
Don’t come round here no more, you could get robbed for
Real (yeah) because my manors ill
My manors ill
For real
Yeah you know my manors ill, my manors ill!

We’ve had it with you politicians
You bloody rich kids never listen
There’s no such thing as broken Britain
We’re just bloody broke in Britain
What needs fixing is the system
Not shop windows down in Brixton
Riots on the television
You can’t put us all in prison!

Oi! I said oi!
What you looking at, you little rich boy?
We’re poor round here, run home and lock your door!
Don’t come round here no more, you could get robbed for
Real (yeah) because my manors ill
My manors ill
For real
Yeah you know my manors ill, my manors ill!

The Bangladeshi international cricketer Shahadat Hossain has been charged with physically torturing an 11-year-old girl he and his wife kept as a domestic servant, in a case that has shocked cricket fans.

Hossain, 29, who is considered a hero by many younger Bangladeshis, faces charges carrying a potential 14 years in prison, plus a fine, and has been suspended from all cricket until further notice by the Bangladeshi cricket board.

The alleged victim, Mahfuza Akhter, known as Happy, was found in September in a street in Dhaka, the Bangladeshi capital, with multiple injuries, including a broken leg. She told investigators she had been working for the couple for a year.

“They used to beat me with sticks, kitchen utensils, punch me, and scratch me. I would be slapped a lot,” Akhter was quoted as saying by CNN, which carried pictures of her swollen and bruised face on the day she was found.

Indian legspinner and Matt DC lookalike Amit Mishra was facing abuse charges too recently, although that one has gone weirdly quiet

Yeah I feel like if you're going to actually sell a mix these days it has to justify being onsale. That either means being way better than the sort of thing you'd give to RA or a blog or something for free, or it has to feel more considered, or definably a bit more like an album. DJs like Mayer and Weatherall are consistently good at this, but I think the whole randomness of Prins's approach makes this more difficult, especially when there are jobbing Balearic guys whacking really good free mixes up every week.

I dunno, I'm a bit old fashioned when it comes to commercial v free mixes. I like decent sound quality, I like being able to see artist names and track titles, I like the implied permanence of a really good mix album, otherwise I'd rather just listen to a live recording or radio set. Doesn't help that there's just this enormous glut of free mixes out there and they're quite a time investment given that, unless you know the DJ, you don't know what you're getting into at the start.

Charges against Mishra were in part sexual abuse of a woman iirc, but maybe he controls the Indian penal log

did u read the 'guardian long read' about the vyapam scandal

contained this quote that i noted but have not found cause to c&p hitherto

“Now the police claim I am a middleman in the Vyapam scam,” he said, “I spent three months in jail before I was granted bail. My college admission has been cancelled, six years of my life are wasted, and my dream of becoming a doctor is over. I know I will be exonerated, the police have no evidence against me, but it will take the rest of my life to clear my name. Now tell me, why shouldn’t someone in my place commit suicide?”

sarahel and lj had some of the best repartee

there was a platonic sort of pocahontas element because lj was venturing among these strange and restive people who could not understand his english ways and only sarahel had the poise & semiotic skills to move across the divide

lol what was the 'baby' incident again btw

imago, Sunday, 10 July 2022 19:51 (one year ago) link

there were several baby incidents! One of the first, was early in my ilxor career and you agreed with me that the term was infantilizing and problematic. Thus, I developed a fondness for you.

Then there were the frogbs baby incident, and the Aimless baby incident ...

sarahell, Sunday, 10 July 2022 19:55 (one year ago) link

Aimless was an 'O, dear' incident iirc? Similar tbf

imago, Sunday, 10 July 2022 19:58 (one year ago) link

maybe trying to accurately recall specifics of ilx exchanges involving Aimless is something else you should avoid? Considering?
