doesn't Matsui collect pr0n??

I believe he's Japanese, yes.

Meanwhile, here's the lowdown on sanskrit's seats for 2009:

Yankees’ Top Seats Grow Pricier
By RICHARD SANDOMIR
NY Times

If you’re a Yankees fan with lots of spare cash, parts of the new Yankee Stadium will be for you. Consider two offerings sent to season-ticket holders in an e-mail message Thursday.

First up are the Legends Suite seats, the best in the $1.3 billion ballpark, which is to open in 2009. There will be 1,800 Legends seats in the 25 sections closest to the field, radiating up the base lines from home plate. Those fans will sit in cushioned seats with teak arms and have access to three clubs, private bathrooms and waiter service.

The seats will start at $500 each and the tiptop ones — the $2,500, front-row seats — are sold out, said Lonn Trost, the Yankees’ chief operating officer. (A Yankees fan could have spent $500 to see 50 games from $10 box seats in 1987.)

The current stadium has a Legends section of about 160 seats, with a peak price of $1,000 a game. The new Legends section features a home plate area that is 20 feet closer to the plate than in the current stadium’s configuration.

The second offering, which promises a “luxury suite experience one seat at a time,” is the 74-seat Club Suite, which is four luxury boxes combined into one. The $700 price includes food and beverages (alcohol is extra), preferred parking and concierge service.

The e-mail message from Trost asked all season-ticket holders if they wanted to upgrade to the deluxe offerings, “for which we have already received an enormous amount of unsolicited requests.” It also began the process of relocating season-ticket holders to similar locations in the new ballpark.

The team has the equivalent of 39,121 full season-ticket holders.

But Trost cautioned in his e-mail message that “the seat location and quantity of games included in all current ticket license plans are subject to change when you relocate to the new Yankee Stadium.” He said by telephone that he was not referring to the slightly smaller capacity of the new ballpark, but the variety of miniticket plans being sold.

The other two premium plans are less than $500. The 1,200 main level outdoor suite seats — behind home plate in the nine sections behind the Legends area — start at $350. And in the 1,300 terrace level seats located in the sections behind the outdoor suite, you can experience a wee bit of luxury for $100, $115 and $135.

The 4,374 premium seats in the four suites essentially substitute for the usual complement of high-priced stadium club seats. Of the 47 luxury suites available at the new ballpark, 29 have been leased, for between $600,000 and $850,000, Trost said.

There will be 48,000 nonpremium seats in the new stadium. Trost said that 88 percent of those cost $100 or less, and 55 percent will cost $45 or less.

He added that the highest-priced box seats at the old stadium — which rose to $250 this season from $150 last year — would not cost significantly more in the new stadium and would not be priced nearly as high as the cheapest Legends seat. But they could be farther back to accommodate the Legends seats.

So I flip to YES, just to see what's going on, and I'm just hoping Kay & Co. aren't totally punchable, and I tune in just before they go to commercial break after the bottom of the 8th, and not five seconds after I get there does Kay start in on his sub-Sterling "warming up is now the greatest reliever of all time" suckoff about Mariano that they usually save for An Important Game. Then coming back from commercial, he makes some half-ass attempt to draw parallels between Mariano's natty appearance coming into the park (and he did look snazzy in his Burberry chapeau) and his equally smashing couture as he enters the game.

I will take a 12 hour symposium co-headlined by Joe Morgan & Dusty Baker on why walks are bad over 5 minutes with that delusional thesaurus-humping shill.

i guess his 1st homer was on a pitch away (didnt see this) but so they got to talking abt how moose has to come inside to get manny out. so next AB moose gets to 0-2 w/ 2 pitches away and the booth is saying how mussina is showing his stubbornness by staying away.

count gets to either 1-2 or 2-2, all still pitches away/outer-half and the setup was just perfect that kay saw moeller locate inside and comment that now we'll see what happens when he finally comes in to manny and it was just MURDERED (tho granted it was basically left dead center over the plate)

"This is what it means to be a lifelong Yankgluh."

G00blar, Friday, 18 April 2008 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner, like his father George, has never been one to mince words. When it comes to where pitcher Joba Chamberlain should be -- the bullpen or the starting rotation -- the younger Steinbrenner's expectations are crystal clear.

"I want him as a starter and so does everyone else, including him, and that is what we are working toward and we need him there now," Steinbrenner told the New York Times. "There is no question about it, you don't have a guy with a 100-mile-per-hour fastball and keep him as a setup guy. You just don't do that. You have to be an idiot to do that."

"The mistake was already made last year switching him to the bullpen out of panic or whatever," Steinbrenner told the newspaper. "I had no say in it last year and I wouldn't have allowed it. That was done last year, so now we have to catch up. It has to be done on a schedule so we don't rush him."

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 21 April 2008 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

Andy K, Thursday, 1 May 2008 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

NEW YORK (AP)—Phil Hughes has a stress fracture in one of his ribs, and the New York Yankees’ pitcher is expected to be sidelined until at least July.

Hughes, placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, had an MRI exam that revealed the stress fracture in the ninth rib on his right side. He will be shut down for four weeks and then re-evaluated. General manager Brian Cashman said the team probably can’t expect the 21-year-old right-hander to return before July.

Hughes is 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA in six starts this year.

Feint-Rod: A-Rod passed out at daughter's birth

May 6 02:58 PM US/Eastern

NEW YORK (AP) - Alex Rodriguez passed out during the birth of his first daughter.
"The one nurse had a cold cloth on his head. The other nurse had the blood pressure on his arm. And my mother was like rubbing his back. And he is passed out on a couch. And I am there, in the middle of labor," Cynthia Rodriguez, wife of the New York Yankees star, said on an episode of the YES Network's "YESterdays" that is scheduled to be broadcast Wednesday night.

"And really, I am not being paid much attention to besides the doctor and a couple of nurses," she said. "And he is there moaning. In between pushing, I am going, `Honey, are you OK?' and `Are you breathing? Are you OK?' "

Natasha Alexander Rodriguez was born on Nov. 18, 2004.

"As tough and big as he seems, he is real wimpy around doctors or any type of medical situation," Cynthia Rodriguez said, according to excerpts released Tuesday by YES. "I don't know why I thought the birth of our child would be different. In the middle of the night, I realized that I needed to go to the hospital. I wake him up. The first thing that comes out of his mouth, `Can we call your mother?' ... A few hours later, I said, `I think you can call my mom now.' Uh, and the color came back to his face when I told him he could call my mom."

A-Rod traveled from New York last week and arrived at a Miami-area hospital about 10 minutes after the birth of his second daughter, Ella Alexander Rodriguez, on April 21.

Alex and Cynthia met in 1996 at a gym in Miami.

"I scouted her out for a month," he said. "I wanted to see her routine, and I wanted to see what time she came in, see how consistent she was. And sure enough, she was like a machine. She would come in right after work, and get on the treadmill and do her abs. And finally, I build enough courage after about 3 1/2 weeks. And I said, `I know you are going to go do some abs after. And do you mind if I join you?"

Cynthia said she was unaware of his celebrity status at first.

"I know he played baseball, because everybody in the gym said, `Do you know who that is? And he plays baseball' or whatever," she said. "I didn't grow up in a sports-oriented family. So, I wasn't aware that you could have an entire livelihood off of a sport. So when they would say, `Oh, he plays baseball,' I always think, `Oh, I wonder what else he does'—like `that's a nice hobby—but what does he really do?"

Jason Giambi doubled home a run in the fifth. But he was tagged out between third base and home in the fifth when he overran a stop sign that had changed as he looked down.

“Big G can’t slow down,” Giambi said. “Once the train gets going, there’s no brakes.”

NEW YORK, May 16 (UPI) -- New York Yankees All-Star Jason Giambi said he often wears a tiger-stripe thong to help him out of slumps -- and he has loaned it out to teammates.

Giambi said he only dons his lucky gold lame underwear when all else has failed, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

"I only put it on when I'm desperate to get out of a big slump," the 37-year-old slugger told Portfolio.com.

Giambi said he has loaned the thong out to teammates, including Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Johnny Damon, Robin Ventura and Robinson Cano.

"All of them wore it and got hits," he said. "The thong works every time."

This time last year, these clowns were 7 games under & 13.5 games back, and they managed to snag the wildcard and made a run @ 1st as well. Until these clowns are actually 20 games under come July, or Cashman trades Cano & Melky for Juan Pierre & Tony Pena Jr, I'm not ruling out anything.

Meanwhile, how about this? The Yankees are staying in downtown Pittsburgh and are apparently sharing their hotel with a furry convention -- that is, grown men and women who dress up and act like animals. Here's the official Web site -- Anthrocon 2008: "It's a Jungle Out There!"

You cannot make this up.

Most of the players were a little taken aback - Alex Rodriguez was telling Derek Jeter how he got caught in an elevator with nine hissing cats, and thought they might start scratching him -- but Jason Giambi absolutely loved it. Big shocker there. If the Yankees didn't have to get out of town tonight, you get the feeling the Big G would hang out for another night and join the fun.

"Those people are awesome," he said. "Awesome."

A-Rod's wife alleges infidelity in divorce papers
By CURT ANDERSON, Associated Press Writer

Monday, July 7, 2008
(07-07) 09:03 PDT MIAMI, (AP) --

Alex Rodriguez's wife filed for divorce Monday, calling her husband an adulterer who "emotionally abandoned his wife and children."

"The marriage of the parties is irretrievably broken because of the husband's extramarital affairs and other marital misconduct," according to Cynthia Rodriguez's petition for dissolution of marriage, filed in the family division of Miami-Dade County Circuit Court.

The New York Yankees third baseman, who earned his 12th All-Star selection Sunday, has refused to comment on his relationship with Madonna, who denied any romantic involvement with the slugger in a statement posted Sunday on people.com.

"The petitioner has exhausted every effort to salvage the marriage of the parties," Cynthia Rodriguez said in the filing. "However, Alex has emotionally abandoned his wife and children and has left her with no choice but to divorce him."

Rodriguez's attorney in Miami, Ira M. Elegant, said he had not reviewed the divorce petition but added: "As you know, anyone can pay the filing fee and make allegations."

Elegant also represents NBA star Shaquille O'Neal in his ongoing divorce from his wife, Shaunie.

A telephone message left for a Rodriguez spokesman Monday was not immediately returned.

The couple, who married in November 2002, have a $12 million, six-bedroom house in the upscale Miami suburb of Coral Gables. A company run by a corporation controlled by Rodriguez bought an apartment at Trump Park Avenue in Manhattan for $7.4 million in July 2005.

Cynthia Rodriguez has asked for primary custody of their two children, as well as child support and alimony.

Their two daughters are Natasha Alexander, 3, and 2-month-old Ella Alexander.

The filing comes just days after the third baseman was linked to Madonna in various media outlets. Cynthia Rodriguez later visited the Paris home of rocker Lenny Kravitz, who said she came to France to escape the media frenzy in New York and denied anything improper.

Cynthia Rodriguez's lawyer, Maurice Kutner, declined to elaborate on the filing, which does not mention Madonna or any other alleged paramours by name.

"Cynthia has made it very clear to me that she wants to take the high road and protect her children and herself. There's no vindictiveness here," Kutner said. "She wants to resolve the issues between Alex and herself in an amicable fashion."

The couple has had prenuptial agreement in place since Oct. 3, 2002, according to the divorce papers.

The divorce petition was filed the day after Rodriguez hit his 536th homer, tying Yankees Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle for 13th place.

Rodriguez is in the first season of a $275 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees, a deal that allows him to earn up to $305 million. He made $185.45 million from 2001-7 from his contract with the Texas Rangers and Yankees.

"I feel like Madonna's using mind control over him. I don't recognize the man he's become. He was a sweet, beautiful, loving husband and father. Today he's very cold and calculating. I believe he was having an affair with Madonna."

NYPost:

Ladies and gentlemen, The Bronx is sunburning.

Yankee fans are seeing - and turning - red over a ban on sunscreen, which Stadium security guards say was widely expanded in the last few weeks.

Security guards collected garbage bags full of sunblock at the entrances to Yankee Stadium over the sweltering weekend, when temps hit 96 degrees and the UV index reached a skin-scorching 9 out of 10 - a move team officials said was to protect the Stadium from terrorism.

Have you had bad security experiences at Yankee Stadium? E-mail jols✧✧✧@nyp✧✧✧.c✧✧.

But fans baking in the bleachers and upper deck argued that the sun may be a bigger threat than Osama bin Laden.

"I was really pissed because, since I am Irish and I have a bald head, I need my sunblock," said Sean Gavin, 40, who had to toss his SPF 30 at the gate Saturday.

"After they saw me dousing myself with it, it should have been obvious to them that it was sunblock and not some explosive."

The team contends that sunscreen has long been on the list of stadium contraband, but there is no mention of it on the Yankee Web site.

Four weeks ago, Stadium officials decided that sunscreen of all sizes and varieties would not be permitted, a security supervisor told The Post before last night's game.

"There have been a lot of complaints," he said. "We tell them to apply once and then throw it out."

For fans who bring babies or young children to cheer on the home team, the guard had suggested they "beg" to take the sunblock in.

Seeing the giant bag full of confiscated sunscreen Saturday, one steaming Yankee fan asked whether he could take one of the tubes and apply it before heading into the park.

"Absolutely not," the guard told him. "What if you get a rash? You might sue the Yankees."

Fans said the team seems more concerned with catching the Tampa Bay Rays than ensuring their fans don't catch UV rays.

"Five hours in the upper deck with no sunscreen is crazy," season-ticket holder Dan McCourt said.

The Stadium does sell 1-ounce bottles of Arizona Sun SPF 15 for $5 - a huge markup that makes its beer seem cheap.

Dermatologists said that, security concerns or not, leaving 56,000 fans unprotected from potential skin cancer is "very dangerous."

"This is especially bad for children, as their younger skin is particularly sensitive," said Dr. Babar Rao, a specialist at the Skin and Cancer Center of New York. "Sunblock needs to be reapplied every two hours, even if you are not swimming in the ocean or pool."

Major League Baseball even has a skin-cancer prevention program called "Play Sun Smart."

An hour after being asked about the sunscreen ban, Yankee spokesman Jason Zillo told The Post that the rules would be changed to permit 3-ounce containers.

Kennedy said it was the "first bad outing I've had in a long time, since the All-Star break" -- of course, the others were in the minor leagues -- and that he was "a little" surprised manager Joe Girardi pulled him after five straight hits to start the bottom of the third inning.

"I'm not going to look much into it. I felt like I made some good pitches," Kennedy said. "What was it, a bunch of singles and three doubles? I'm just not real upset about it. I'm just going to move on and I've already done that."

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 04:19 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, I hate the guy more than a lot of people, but wtf at AP story piling on A-Rod:

When the Yankees needed Alex Rodriguez at his best, he had one of his worst games.
(...)
Rodriguez flopped in crucial spots all night. He grounded into two double plays -- one with the bases loaded -- and whiffed for the final out.

"Tonight, you can put it on me," Rodriguez said. "It was a lousy night. We pretty much screwed it up every way you can screw it up. There's absolutely no excuse."
(...)
Johnny Damon hit two solo homers for the Yankees, but Rodriguez's failures thwarted one potential rally after another.

"He's the best player in the league. Unfortunately, he had a bad night," Damon said.

Your veteran starter gives up 6 earned and 10 hits in 4 2/3 and it's A-Rod's fault you lost?

G00blar, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 09:13 (seventeen years ago)

Well, duh -- Pettitte's a True Yankee, a gritty gamer, the ace of numerous World Championship teams. A-Rod's just a gun-for-hire mercenary that's as clutch as a Fendi knock-off.

David R., Wednesday, 27 August 2008 13:39 (seventeen years ago)

"No one is more frustrated than me," said Rodriguez, adding that he'll show up early Wednesday for extra hitting work with batting coach Kevin Long.

He's one of the best players ever and this makes it sound like he's being given detention for being a goof at school.

And that's where the Pudge conundrum became apparent: He wanted to play every game, but he did not always want to make every single play. He won a Gold Glove in 2007 more because of his name than his defense. He had gained a reputation within the organization for failing to call for breaking balls with runners on base, because he didn't want to block pitches in the dirt. He also had a tendency to get frustrated at the plate, and that carried over to his defense.

The Tigers' trade of Rodriguez for Kyle Farnsworth has not worked out. But they were right about Pudge. Just ask the Yankees. Veteran pitchers Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina prefer throwing to backup Jose Molina. Since the trade, Rodriguez has caught 17 games for the Yankees; Molina has caught 13.

Andy K, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

Molina actually outhitting Pudge (yeah, I know) probably has something to do w/ that game split, too.

Andy K, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

Goldman:

As for the battered old Stadium itself, no sentimentality here, or only a little. It had seen much history, but all things must pass and its day had come. It was cramped, dark, and occasionally dangerous. It was built (and remodeled) with very little thought given to crowd control or accommodating the masses it regularly attracted. In this regard, it was inadequate in nearly every aspect of its design. It's time to have a building that doesn't treat its customers like cattle being shunted up and down ramps to the abattoir.

Mohammed Butt (max), Tuesday, 23 September 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

Yankee Stadium was an important stage in my discovery of America. I came here as an immigrant in 1938. In the summer of 1939, I started working in a shaving brush factory. Some of my co-workers turned out to be of Italian origin, and they took me to a baseball game at Yankee Stadium. A seat in the bleachers in those days cost 55 cents. Home plate was far away, and it was not possible to see much of the infield play. But Joe DiMaggio was in center field right in front of us. His graceful, seemingly effortless gliding toward fly balls and the tremendous drives he hit generally in our direction in the far end of the bleachers made the visit exciting. As the years went by, I graduated from the bleachers to the grandstand at $1.10, to the reserved seats — about where the owner’s box is now — at $1.65.

In the early days, the idea that the day might come when I would sit in the owner’s box next to Joe DiMaggio would have seemed beyond even America’s capacity to fulfill dreams. Yet that is what happened, starting in the 1970s, proving America’s ability to make the impossible come true.

After George Steinbrenner became owner, my visits took place under his aegis. I developed vast affection for his capacity for friendship, which matched his fierce pride in his team. We often sat next to each other. During a playoff series game with the Red Sox, Mike Mussina was cruising along with a no-hitter and an eight-run lead when Boston got a hit in a late inning. I pointed out to George that this might be a good thing because the Yankees could now take Mussina out and rest him for a later start in the series. But, for George, there was no way a Red Sox hit could ever be considered a good thing. George was in the process of explaining this to me in his usual emphatic way, when the Red Sox underlined his point by scoring a bushel of runs. Luckily, the rally ended, the Yankees won the game and harmony was restored.

I will always have a warm spot in my heart for Yankee Stadium. This is where I grew to love this quintessentially American game, with its sudden bursts of drama, punctuated by periods of calm, which permit reflection on the subtle positioning of players, the minute adjustments that mark the difference between excellence and mediocrity, before a new drama subsumes all reflection in the emotion of the moment. I will miss the Stadium and its memories, but I am confident that the Yankees will add many experiences in their new surroundings which I shall cherish.

Joe Sheehan recommended they re-sign Pvano!

So, were I in charge, this would be your 2009 New York Yankees:

C: Posada, Molina
1B: Teixeira
2B: Cano, Betemit
SS: Jeter
3B: Rodriguez
LF: Damon
CF: Cabrera, Endy Chavez
RF: Abreu, Nady
DH: Matsui
SP: Wang, Chamberlain, Mussina, Hughes, Kennedy, Pavano
RP: Rivera, Ramirez, Veras, Coke, Aceves, Giese

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 21:51 (seventeen years ago)

There has to be a better backup catcher than Molina out there.

Player x over molina, gardener over betemit on bench, Add player X over Kennedy (possibly shell shocked). I like Endy Chavez in CF tho.

Sorry to actually make an October post on this thread, and thus spoil the elegance of it all, but this has to be seen by you, if it hasn't already:

There is one very important point here. The most important thing to remember is this: If you didn't get it from me or my brother, it doesn't mean shit. I don't care about some piss-ant employee. If you don't get it from me or Hal, it's meaningless. I have a lot of things here and Hal is in New York, which is good.
