Jamie and Frank and Manny and Joe - 2010 DODGERS THREAD

So apparently Jamie McCourt wants $1 million a month, Frank is trying to devise some sort of global sports empire with 2.1 billion of financing and neither of the two have paid California taxes since 2004. Niiiice. Cant wait for Selig to get involved to make this even more of a shit show. Supposedly this whole thing will come to a head in May for a trial.

Decent analysis of everything is here

Former NL Cy Young Award winner Eric Gagne(notes) has agreed to a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers and would receive a $500,000, one-year contract if added to the 40-man roster.

Gagne won the 2003 NL Cy Young with the Dodgers, when he converted all 55 save chances, and saved 152 games over three seasons through 2004. The right-hander converted a record 84 consecutive save chances during that time, but had operations on his pitching elbow in 2005 and 2006, and back surgery in 2006.
FILE - This 2009 file photo shows Milwaukee Brewers baseball player Eric Gagne(notes). Former NL Cy Young Award winner Eric Gagne has agreed to a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. Gagne would receive a $500,000, one-year contract if added to the 40-man roster, the person said Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced.

Now 34, he hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2008, when he was 4-3 with a 5.44 ERA and 10 saves in 17 chances for Milwaukee. The Brewers released him from a minor league contract last March after doctors found he had a frayed rotator cuff. He signed with the Quebec Capitales of the independent Can-Am League and went 6-6 with a 4.65 ERA in 17 starts.

The Mitchell Report accused Gagne of receiving human growth hormone in 2004. He apologized to Milwaukee teammates for “a distraction that shouldn’t be taking place” but didn’t directly address the allegation.

I was at the last game he saved for the Dodgers. Was this weird Dodgers-Mets-Red Sox timewarp game starring Nomar, Grady Little, and Pedro Martinez. If I remember correctly Gagne struck out Delgado and Wright and still flashed that crazy 70 mph change. The date was also 6/6/06.

Dude has been complete garbage ever since.

Manny Ramirez predicted that this season will be his last with the Dodgers, reports Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.

"I know I’m not going to be here next year," Ramirez said, who didn't dismiss the possibility of retirement. "I doubt it, I don’t know. I’m happy to be here. I’m going to try to enjoy myself." The Dodgers exercised Ramirez's $20 million option in November, but with the financial uncertainty surrounding the ballclub, there's a pretty good chance he moves on after 2010.

No shit Manny. The source article is kinda perplexing. Manny says hes done after this year then he equivocates like a madman. We all know youre gone after this year. Dont be coy about it.

One small caveat is he was remarkably lighter last year then he was the year before, so the differential isnt alarming. I guess he blames the loss of weight to messing up his swing. But I heard that excuse before, from Andruw Jones.

This is what happens when someone gets stabbed on opening day

Police promised a crackdown on tailgaters at the Dodger’s home opener -- and they delivered.

A total of 132 people were arrested Tuesday, with most accused of drinking in public, said Capt. William Murphy of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Several more were arrested on suspicion of scalping tickets and illegal vending, he said. More than 50 traffic and parking citations also were handed out.

“Overall, it was a far better day than last year,” Murphy said. “No major incidents.”

Tailgating -- with or without alcohol -- is not allowed in the Dodger Stadium parking lots. In years past, fans say, security officers looked the other way unless they were unruly or drunk. Last year, the Dodgers made a pointed effort to crack down on drinking in stadium parking lots.

"It's always been a rule, but it's only recently been enforced in the last couple of years," said Carol Mitchell, an off-duty Los Angeles police officer working Monday as a security officer for the Dodgers. She said people had been generally calm and cooperative so she has tried to be equally low-key.

NEW YORK -- When the Dodgers-Mets game was rained out Monday and rescheduled as a twi-night doubleheader, Chad Billingsley suggested that knuckleballer Charlie Haeger start both games and the Dodgers could save Hiroki Kuroda for Wednesday's game.

"Sure. Why not?" said Haeger. "I'd be open to it. It'd be interesting to see."

Manager Joe Torre was told that Haeger was game.

"That doesn't surprise me," said manager Joe Torre, who shook his head and instead pushed back Kuroda, Monday's scheduled starter, for the first game Tuesday, with Haeger pitching as scheduled in the nightcap.

What I dont get is that I have yet to see Haeger throw more than 120 pitches.. Granted hes only had one good start but still..

mayor jingleberries, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 01:46 (sixteen years ago)

Hey guys, someone has something to say about bad CF play and contracts. Hes is an authority on the subject:

NEW YORK -- Even before the Dodgers lost their doubleheader Tuesday to the Mets at Citi Field, general manager Ned Colletti had some harsh words for his struggling team.

"Some guys, I guess, think that they're better than they are," the Dodgers' general manager told host Peter Tilden on 790-KABC. "And they think that the opposition is just going to roll over and get beat by them. That obviously doesn't happen. We've lost two out of three to Cincinnati, two out of three to Washington, two out of three to Pittsburgh. All three of those teams - no offense to those three teams - we're better than they are. We should be winning those games. And when we don't do it, you know what, it's utterly frustrating."

Colletti said he'd recently spoken with a number of players individually about their poor effort. He singled out Matt Kemp in particular on the radio, calling his baserunning and defense "below average."

"Why is it? Because he got a new deal?" Colletti said in reference to Kemp's new two-year, $10.95 million contract. "Can't tell you. But you know, it's below-average. If this is the last day of the season and people are voting for the Gold Glove, his name is not even on the ballot. It's a shame that he would go from where he was a year ago to revert back to when the ball goes up in the air and you're not sure where it's going, or if it's going to get caught."

Colletti said it was too early to scour the trade market for pitching.
"As frustrating as 18 games is, there's 140-some games left to play here," he said. "I'm not trying to jump to conclusions."

biz3, yeah

Antoine Joubert Singers (Andy K), Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:00 (sixteen years ago)

Dave Stewart tore Colletti a new asshole in the latimes this morning.

Dave Stewart, the former All-Star pitcher who represents Kemp, said Wednesday that Colletti was using the center fielder as a scapegoat to shift blame from his own failures in assembling the team.

"What I would suggest for Ned Colletti to do is look at himself in the mirror," Stewart said.

In a radio interview with Peter Tilden of KABC on Tuesday, Colletti said he thought some Dodgers players were overestimating their abilities and taking certain elements of the game for granted. When asked specifically about Kemp, Colletti said the outfielder's baserunning and defense were "below average." Colletti said he didn't know whether Kemp was regressing as a result of his new two-year, $10.95-million contract.

The fallout prompted Colletti to call Kemp into a postgame meeting that also included Manager Joe Torre.

"I wanted to explain to him that I didn't single out Matt Kemp," Colletti said. "I was asked a question about it. It's not one guy's responsibility. It's a team effort. It's a team effort when it goes in the right direction. It's a team effort when it doesn't. It starts with me."

Kemp declined to talk about the meeting, but Stewart said the reason Colletti offered for saying what he said wasn't a valid one.

"No, not at all," Stewart said. "To me, he didn't need to answer the question. If anything, he should have said, ‘No comment.' "

Stewart said Colletti should take more responsibility for the Dodgers' 8-13 start.

"He hired the manager," Stewart said. "He hired the coaching staff. The players on the team were selected by him and the coaching staff."

Stewart said that no player has called out Colletti for wasting tens of millions of dollars on Jason Schmidt or Andruw Jones, and that players deserved the same level of courtesy from their general manager.

As much as I tried to pretend the divorce wasnt going to affect the season it already has. Instead of signing a proven starter to eat up innings effectively or fucking a even offering arb to Randy Wolf they wouldnt have had to trot out Charlie Haeger and his 9.00 era for 3-4 ugly starts. Once he blew it and Padilla got hurt we had to start scraping dudes off the AAA scrap heap. Its looking like its possible that we'll have a second game this weekend where a reliever has to start. I have it on good authority (NOT from Colletti, from others) that if anything, Ned UNDERSTATED the issues with Kemp. This kid is really full of himself, to the point that it is becoming an issue in the clubhouse. I’m not saying they WILL trade him. I still think there is less than a 50-percent chance that they will. I’m just saying that if they do trade one of their core young players, he probably will be the one, not only because of these issues but also because he would have the most value.

Joe Torre brought in Jonathan Broxton yesterday when the Dodgers were up 5 because he had to beat them by any means necessary.

Following the same stupid logic, he brings Broxton in today with a 4 run lead. Broxton, who pitched 3 of the past 4 days and warmed up in the pen on the day he didnt pitch, promptly blows it because he had nothing in the tank. Torre leaves him hanging and he gives up the 4 runs and throws 48 pitches.

What. the. fuck.

Can we add Broxton to the pile of arms Torre has ruined in his tenure as Dodgers manager? - Cory Wade, Ramon Troncoso and now Broxton. Who cares tho right? Torre will be gone next year.

This team is going to be ass for a while. They will have holes in LF, 3B, and need THREE starting pitchers as only Kershaw and Billingsley are signed for 2011.

I will also paste this:

It has been a bizarre season in Hollywood for Matt Kemp, who at times looks like an MVP candidate and at other times resembles a player still desperately trying to find his way.

Kemp drove in 101 runs for the Dodgers last season, but a slow start in 2010 prompted GM Ned Colletti to publicly question the work ethic of the young outfielder. The latest episode of the Kemp saga came Thursday, when he returned from a two-day benching by homering against the Phillies. But Kemp also committed a mental miscue that contributed to a devastating 10-9 loss.

Kemp’s future in Los Angeles became more of an open question when his agent, Dave Stewart, lashed out Thursday over what he perceives as unfair treatment of his client. “It’s very, very difficult to play under the circumstances that Kemp is playing under,” Stewart told Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times.

The Dodgers signed Kemp to a two-year deal this spring for a guaranteed $10.95 million, so they obviously recognize his talent. Keeping him happy and productive may be another matter.

Presumably, Manny Ramirez will hit the waiver wire sometime in the next 48-72 hours -- and presumably, he'll be with another team in 8 days.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Monday, 23 August 2010 11:32 (fifteen years ago)

Boras, according to MLB.com, said he has been "very specific in years" and "with the names of the group of players Manny is associated with, actually a group of one" -- referring to Barry Bonds, whose contract with the Giants ended when he was 42. "We've had 40 contacts with the Dodgers this winter involving various players, including talks about Manny, and three meetings involving Manny," Boras said.

Asked if he believes Ramirez will be signed by spring training, Boras said: "I don't really think about a timetable. Anything can be done any day. You just don't know," according to Yahoo! Sports.

Then, in an apparent shot at the Dodgers for giving him and Ramirez 48 hours to accept or reject their one-season deal, Boras said, "What I do know, you better watch out when you're playing chicken," according to the report.

Paul DePodesta (February 2004 – October 2005)
Record: 164-160 (.506)
Playoffs: Lost 2004 NLDS

Good moves

Trading Paul LoDuca (& others) for Brad Penny and Hee-Seop Choi (& others). Shut up, Plaschke. Trading a declining catcher who you know is using steroids for a young pitcher with top skill and a first baseman with power potential is always a good idea.
Trading bit pieces to Arizona for Steve Finley and Brent Mayne. The parts that went to Arizona never panned out, and do you think having Finley was a good idea on the last day of 2004?
Signed Derek Lowe as a free agent. Widely panned at the time, this ended up being a steal, as Lowe provided four years of excellent performance.
Signed Jeff Kent as a free agent. Kent became, in many ways, the best second baseman in Dodger history.
Signed J.D. Drew as a free agent. I’m sure I’m going to get a lot of heat for this, but Drew put up over a .900 OPS as a Dodger, and his one injury was a freak one (a 95mph heater off the wrist).

Bad moves

Knowing how to use a computer. A fatal sin, apparently.
Having no backup plan at catcher after trading LoDuca. Once the Charles Johnson trade fell through, the Dodgers were stuck with Brent Mayne.
Having zero depth on the 2005 team. When Jose Valentin and Nori Nakamura are your top choices at 3B, you know you have problems.
Being unlucky enough to be the GM just before the vaunted young core arrived. Imagine what he could have done with Kemp, Martin, and the like?
Allowed Shane Victorino to be selected in the Rule 5 draft. Oops!

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Friday, 17 September 2010 23:24 (fifteen years ago)

Two year old BP article on DePo vs Colletti vs Logan White (the guy in charge of drafting since the early part of the decade): http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=7478

I had totally forgotten that Ethier was traded for Milton Bradley and Antonio Perez. Still doesn't necessarily absolve signing Jason Schmidt when the organization knew he was hurt, but still, hahaha Oakland gave away Andre Ethier for Milton Bradley.

I would have rather had Tim Wallach next year, but, alas.

The five hitters signed by the Dodgers this offseason have a combined OPS under .600

.233/.299/.395 in 1,475 plate appearances in 2010

Yeah Im kind of freaking out. However, Navarro is going to be the lefty side of a platoon, as well as Jay Gibbons (for all I know hes going to be lefty bat off the bench). If Gwynn Jr. is anything more than a 4th OF I am going to kill someone. Uribe is Uribe.

Supposedly next on Ned's xmas list is Billy Hall. =\

And again, aside from the Giants the NL west kinda looks like shit.

Dodgers give 3/12 to a reliever who has a k/9 less than 6 and is 32 years old. Is he going to play LF?
