i was getting excited about Opening Day and decided to check out the schedule on DirecTV. to my surprise i noticed that they, in most situations, have both the visitor's and home team feeds. this isn't just a opening day thing either and wonder if they added over the air stations this year? GREATEST THING EVER.

i recorded the Giants/Dodger game on DirecTV but because it was the Giants feed they blacked me out. so i was blacked out because i'm in the Los Angeles market, to boost local rating (and i'm OK with that).

I am really pissed at Rupert Murdoch right now. FOX has exclusive rights to MLB tv rights on Saturday until 5 p.m. and no obligation to show any games.

They blocked every single game on Saturday including all regionals (Cubs was listed as Cox regional) while they showed family sitcom reruns.

i'm doing MLB.TV for the first time this year since it's cheaper than cable tv and i only watch baseball really anyway. hopefully the proxy trick still works for watching in-market games

also, the only other cable I watch is pretty much the news (plenty of that online) and Stewart/Colbert sometimes (same).

yeah there's a map somewhere showing the blackout regions - iirc if you live in iowa, every midwest team is blacked out, ridiculous

and yeah xxxp mlb.tv supports simultaneous logins as of last year, but that's something they could fix any time (and i wouldn't be surprised if they did) so i'm a bit uneasy about pooling with people

they're less likely to fix the proxy trick since they're not the ones losing out from that

The Braves (2 states, a 5 hr drive and a time zone away) are blacked out for me -- makes me want to spit acid in Bud's eyes.

They used to use the address of the credit card that paid for it to determine whether a game was blacked out; I guess that's changed if proxies work?

they use the IP that you log in with (so you can login with a web proxy and then switch back to your real connection to watch)

Definitely worth trying the proxy route unless there's a chance you can get permabanned if they catch you. It's a really dumb system, though (unless you're in the UK where none of it is ever blacked out, but I doubt I'm their average customer!).

mmm not really. you can't use the PS3 MLB app, for instance. and you can't watch it on your computer. if you buy the app you can watch games on the app and that's it. (but there's nothing stopping you from outputting your iphone to your TV...)

what burns me up is that i pay full freight for MLB.tv and then have to pay for the app on top of it! come on, i've ponied up a hundred bucks, i should get the app for free.

If you do a smart search and key in AALL HDTV GIANTS CCHAN 696 then press the red button to do the keyword search and choose Show Types and then Events, it should catch only the Giants live games on CSN BAY AREA. If you do an autorecord, you can specify extra time to add to the end of the recording.

just add your team along with that regional local broadcast number, don't think this will work with those random 720+ MLB Extra Innings channel numbers.

with MLB.tv on ps3 all games are archived and can be watched from any inning... just sayin

Strike Zone, when it existed a few years ago, seemed redundant. You can already see most/all of the games on the EI home channel and click into them -- you don't need an anchor or whatever to tell you what is happening.

What is the EI home channel?

Extra Innings has a "home channel" where the screen is split into eight telecasts. The default audio comes from the top-left telecast, but you can move around to hear the other telecasts and select a channel/game from there.

Apologies for the confusion -- didn't realize that THIS new Strike Zone is the work of MLB Network, not Extra Innings.

Oh right. That's pretty nice. But I don't have Extra Innings, so a cheaper RedZone -alike would be great, even if it's only a few days a week.

i looked in the on air guide and saw that tomorrows game (which is now today) is going to be broadcast on MLB Extra Innings channel 747. i get home from work and see that "Phillies vs. Giants" is gone on channel 747 and only "To Be Announced" is displayed instead. so i'm pissed and i call in. spent over a half an hour on the phone they transferred me to the technical dept and they told me yes it is suppose to be on. the tech tries a bunch of different things tell me that he has escalated this and to keep watching and it will be on shortly. i'm so mad, this was Lee vs. Cain tonight.

Yeah, local audio isn't blocked, just tv. I listened to a lot of Braves games when my cable co couldn't figure how to flip a switch on Peachtree TV days.

i listen to a lot of local audio every night when the nats play and i don't have a television. so annoying!

You can set some routers to run through PIA's servers, which would let you get around blackouts on TV and on your iPad. The modem/router I have to have for my Time Warner Cable plan won't let me monkey with IP addresses, unfortunately. I don't lose too much - I'm more interested in Giants/Red Sox games than the Rangers or lolAstros.

i just got my renewal notice from DirecTV for the 2014 season:

just got off the phone with DirecTV, they gave me $180 in credits, so it cost me $17.94 for 2015. i usually only get $60 off.

With ESPN acknowledging that at some point in the future, but not for at least five years, that they might need to offer their programming a la carte, there is an understanding that the current bundling system will not last forever. While only a portion of cable subscribers are sports fans, cable companies continue to negotiate deals that put networks like ESPN on the standard cable tier with high per-subscriber fees, perhaps worried about erosion from its overall base of customers who might not get cable without sports. MLB has the ability to provide it’s product directly to consumers with MLB.tv, it is aware of a potential shift, and it is open to in-market streaming of games, a potential godsend to those currently blacked out of watching many of the games they wish to see.

Arg, if I'm reading this right, this only secures the rights for Fox to stream local games through it's own service. So ppl without a cable subscription are still out of luck; these games wouldn't stream through MLB

for the last few years it was $197.94 but for 2016 it's $173.94 which is a $24 discount.

i called in and they gave me a $420 discount or $35 off a month for a year. they are paying me for MLB Extra Innings this year. i did have to sign up for one year but figured i would be with them at least six months or through baseball season anyways, so i took it.

Thinking about getting mlb.tv so I can watch some good teams play this year.

i got $10 off for 12 months or $120. if i signed up for auto pay (pick the date on your credit card on file) they would give me an extra $5 off for 12 months or $60. $120 + $60 = 180 in total discounts. MLB Extra Innings nis basically free again this year.

oh, they also threw in HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and Sportspack for free with auto drop off for six months. i win.

i just called for my annual discount on DirecTV. i was seriously thinking about going with the MLB single team option this year. they couldn't offer me anything off MLB but they instead gave me $50 off per month for 12 months with a 12 month contract. i'm here for six months because of baseball so an extra six months for $50 off works for me. i then asked for the sports pack for per and post game shows in addition to that new Grant Brisbee added SF Giants show called Giants Insider. they gave it to me for free for six months. win-win, so happy right now.

MLB has made a slight adjustment to the blackout zones and I'm not in the Reds blackout area anymore. So I can see 19 more Cubs games than last year, and also catch Vottomania.

MLB.TV's website cannily doesn't say anything about refunds, but I emailed them this morning and they said OK, your subscription is canceled and we're processing a refund.

$125 is $125 and I'm going to need that to buy a 4-pack of TP in a few months.

I spoke too soon -- the email says "A refund request has been submitted on your behalf. If approved, please be advised it normally takes banks 5-7 business days to release these funds." So it's a maybe, not a certainty.

due to my deteriorating income, I turned off the automatic renewal last year.

it'd be nice if they let us stream last year's games for free.
