MLB Extra Innings - C/D?

The free preview (through April 9) is way better than I expected it to be, as I find myself watching Marlins/Astros games for the hell of it and staying up until two in the morning watching games in which I have nothing invested except for a reverse fantasy outfielder or something.

I remember Yanc3y saying good things about it last year, and I'm sure it'll result in me watching more baseball, but is it worth $179? I'm tempted.

and yes, the hated Cubs. between TBS, the Cubs, and my beloved Sox -- and ESPN "Tuesday Night Baseball" or whatever they have -- I can pretty much always see a major league game. which is enough for me, I don't need to see Seattle-Anaheim or whatever

tylero (tylero), Thursday, 6 April 2006 03:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I renewed for a second year (they discount the renewals a bit and bill it over 4 months). It's all the baseball you can eat, and more games than you can hope to watch all season. It depends a lot on who you want to see play--if your favorite teams aren't local (or the Yankees/Red Sox), it may be the only way to see the games you want.

Is mlb.tv of better quality this year? Are the blackouts difficult to get around?

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 6 April 2006 11:08 (eighteen years ago) link

As an Extra Innings junky, I'm totally for folks dropping the cash to get this. Tho I haven't been watching much of it so far - my roommate just upgraded to an HDTV, and the Extra Inning stations look kinda ass on it. That said, the Santana / Halladay tilt was broadcast on one of the HD stations, which was soooo dreamy.

But, yeah, what DC said - if it weren't for EI, I wouldn't know a damn thing about baseball outside of the Northeast (& Atlanta, of course).

i might have to drop the $ when i go back to dc. i've been spoiled up here getting the philly and b'more/dc comcast on my cable system. i don't watch phils THAT often, but it's always nice to get a little harry da k.

It's tempting, but fortunately my persistent cr*dit-c*rd debt and housing limbo prevents me from seriously considering it.

If you like radio broadcasts, the Gameday Audio is an excellent deal. You can pick which team's announcers you want to hear, and you get to hear weird local radio ads.

i am probably going to resub to extra innings, especially now that i'm not working during games anymore. it'll be even better this year, now that fox's regional network stranglehold on games is slowly being lessened ...

i was getting excited about Opening Day and decided to check out the schedule on DirecTV. to my surprise i noticed that they, in most situations, have both the visitor's and home team feeds. this isn't just a opening day thing either and wonder if they added over the air stations this year? GREATEST THING EVER.

I am really pissed at Rupert Murdoch right now. FOX has exclusive rights to MLB tv rights on Saturday until 5 p.m. and no obligation to show any games.

They blocked every single game on Saturday including all regionals (Cubs was listed as Cox regional) while they showed family sitcom reruns.

Owners and MLB expected to lift many blackout restrictions in 2009.

I guess they are launching a Baseball Channel next year. I would be surprised if there was no collusion lawsuit filed against MLB on this, or even an inquiry.

Speaking of which, I heard a rumor that the players' union was threatening to file a collusion action against the owners for what is basically an (tacit?) agreement to keep Barry Bonds out of baseball.

Morbs you can trick it with an international proxy server, I believe. I don't know of any myself since I actually am international.

Also, can't you share an account w/someone and essentially do halfsies?

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 16:19 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah there's a map somewhere showing the blackout regions - iirc if you live in iowa, every midwest team is blacked out, ridiculous

ciderpress, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 16:21 (thirteen years ago) link

and yeah xxxp mlb.tv supports simultaneous logins as of last year, but that's something they could fix any time (and i wouldn't be surprised if they did) so i'm a bit uneasy about pooling with people

they're less likely to fix the proxy trick since they're not the ones losing out from that

ciderpress, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 16:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I've been using simultaneous logins on MLB.TV for like 6 years

ciderpress, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 16:37 (thirteen years ago) link

They used to use the address of the credit card that paid for it to determine whether a game was blacked out; I guess that's changed if proxies work?

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 16:54 (thirteen years ago) link

they use the IP that you log in with (so you can login with a web proxy and then switch back to your real connection to watch)

ciderpress, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 16:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Definitely worth trying the proxy route unless there's a chance you can get permabanned if they catch you. It's a really dumb system, though (unless you're in the UK where none of it is ever blacked out, but I doubt I'm their average customer!).

MLB Extra Innings Giving Fans 11-Day Free Preview

By Marcus Vanderberg on March 28, 2011 6:02 PM

Thanks to Opening Day starting earlier this year, baseball fans will get an 11-day free preview of MLB Extra Innings from March 31-April 10 on iN DEMAND.

The cable package retails for $179 if purchased before April 11 and $199 if ordered after that date.

Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Bright House Networks, Cablevision Systems, Bresnan Communications, Charter Communications, Midcontinent, and many independent affiliates are the cable providers offering MLB Extra Innings.

There are two new features to this year’s package:

DUAL FEEDS: iN DEMAND will deliver both the home and visiting team broadcasts of the same game whenever possible, so that fans can choose which telecast they want to watch.

MULTI-SCREEN MOSAIC: Preview which game to watch with this popular rotating mosaic of multiple screens that shows all the live action from games being played at the time, along with scores, inning and channel location. Find this on the first channel of the system’s package lineup.

i have always wondered how to record these Giants games automatically on my DirecTV DVR. found this tip on-line tonight:

If you do a smart search and key in AALL HDTV GIANTS CCHAN 696 then press the red button to do the keyword search and choose Show Types and then Events, it should catch only the Giants live games on CSN BAY AREA. If you do an autorecord, you can specify extra time to add to the end of the recording.

just add your team along with that regional local broadcast number, don't think this will work with those random 720+ MLB Extra Innings channel numbers.

it's MLB version of the Red Zone Channel, live look into games where there is something happening. DirecTV had this back in 2007 and 2008 (iirc) and was dropped when MLB Network came on the air.

there is a rumor that DirecTV will add it this year as well.

I looked for Strike Zone but didn't find it, but did find this:

http://www.federalbaseball.com/2012/4/5/2927330/introducing-full-count-from-yahoo-sports-and-mlb-com

Did anyone use this yesterday?

polyphonic, Monday, 9 April 2012 17:17 (twelve years ago) link

Strike Zone, when it existed a few years ago, seemed redundant. You can already see most/all of the games on the EI home channel and click into them -- you don't need an anchor or whatever to tell you what is happening.

Andy K, Monday, 9 April 2012 17:22 (twelve years ago) link

What is the EI home channel?

polyphonic, Monday, 9 April 2012 17:32 (twelve years ago) link

Extra Innings has a "home channel" where the screen is split into eight telecasts. The default audio comes from the top-left telecast, but you can move around to hear the other telecasts and select a channel/game from there.

Andy K, Monday, 9 April 2012 17:57 (twelve years ago) link

Apologies for the confusion -- didn't realize that THIS new Strike Zone is the work of MLB Network, not Extra Innings.

Andy K, Monday, 9 April 2012 17:59 (twelve years ago) link

Oh right. That's pretty nice. But I don't have Extra Innings, so a cheaper RedZone -alike would be great, even if it's only a few days a week.

polyphonic, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:03 (twelve years ago) link

Starting April 10, the service will broadcast in a live, whip-around fashion on Tuesdays and Fridays during the MLB regular season, beginning at 7 p.m. ET,

So this has to differ from MLB Tonight, right? It would be great it was similar to their daily anchor/analyst-free highlight segments.

i wrote this on someplace else:

i looked in the on air guide and saw that tomorrows game (which is now today) is going to be broadcast on MLB Extra Innings channel 747. i get home from work and see that "Phillies vs. Giants" is gone on channel 747 and only "To Be Announced" is displayed instead. so i'm pissed and i call in. spent over a half an hour on the phone they transferred me to the technical dept and they told me yes it is suppose to be on. the tech tries a bunch of different things tell me that he has escalated this and to keep watching and it will be on shortly. i'm so mad, this was Lee vs. Cain tonight.

. As reported on Forbes SportsMoney, this year sees a slight easing up on national blackouts as part of the new agreement. Starting this season, subscribers of MLB Extra Innings and MLB.TV have the opportunity to watch Saturday MLB on FOX games subject to certain geographic black outs that protect games assigned to local FOX affiliates.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/mlbtv-offers-access-to-world-series-all-star-game?ymd=20140227&content_id=68422572&vkey=news_mlb

Beginning in May, MLB.TV subscribers for the first time will have the ability to watch live regular season games not being shown on FOX broadcast television in their respective territories. Using this year's first FOX Saturday national broadcast window as an example, here is how the new access applies to MLB.TV subscribers:

On May 24, the FOX Saturday national broadcast schedule features three regionally distributed games beginning at 7 p.m. ET: Cardinals at Reds, Nationals at Pirates, and Royals at Angels. Any MLB.TV subscriber in the FOX viewing territory of the Cardinals-Reds game would be able to watch the Nationals-Pirates and Royals-Angels games live on any supported device.

In previous years, MLB.TV subscribers would have been subject to national blackout restrictions for all three live games. The same policy then would be applicable to MLB.TV subscribers in the FOX viewing territories of the other two live games.

The accessibility to games previously blacked out to MLB.TV subscribers was introduced as part of the eight-year multi-platform media rights agreement MLB and FOX Sports announced in October 2012.

With ESPN acknowledging that at some point in the future, but not for at least five years, that they might need to offer their programming a la carte, there is an understanding that the current bundling system will not last forever. While only a portion of cable subscribers are sports fans, cable companies continue to negotiate deals that put networks like ESPN on the standard cable tier with high per-subscriber fees, perhaps worried about erosion from its overall base of customers who might not get cable without sports. MLB has the ability to provide it’s product directly to consumers with MLB.tv, it is aware of a potential shift, and it is open to in-market streaming of games, a potential godsend to those currently blacked out of watching many of the games they wish to see.
