D-Train came from ...
An ex-teammate of mine, A.J. Burnett, came up with that. He said to me one time, "D-Train, our team is going to go as far you are going to take us." I was a rookie at that time and he said it in front of a lot of reporters and that's basically the wrong thing to do if you want to keep it a secret. They started writing it and the next thing you know people are calling me "D-Train" and they don't even know my real name.
--------
I'm so upset it didn't come from the group D-Train! Think of the soundtrack opportunities!

To be fair: 7-2, 2.89 ERA, 1.19 WHIP
and 500+ ABs
With that logic, why get excited about any rookie ever? Ramirez was the best rookie shortstop in baseball this year, and easily outproduced Loretta or Alex Gonzalez. Beyond that, he was much cheaper, and the Sox never bothered to give him a chance.

― mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 22 September 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)
You frag a multi-million dollar pitching prospect, you're going to get fired. 'Twas ever thus, actually. You can go back more than 50 years and find comments by general managers bemoaning the fact that their managers didn't understand that an organization didn't invest all that money in signing and educating a young player just to have the manager bury him through misuse or because he just didn't like the way he wore his socks.
Girardi will get another shot, and maybe he deserves one. But let it not be said that his firing was completely arbitrary.

Marlins pitcher Scott Olsen arrested July 21, 2007
AVENTURA, Fla. (AP) -- Florida Marlins pitcher Scott Olsen was arrested early Saturday after refusing to pull over and getting into a fight with police officers.
The 23-year-old Olsen was booked into the Miami-Dade county jail on charges of driving under the influence, resisting arrest with violence and fleeing and eluding a police officer. He remained in jail on Saturday afternoon.
Police Lt. Michael Bentolila said Olsen was arrested in the Miami suburb of Aventura, where an officer clocked him driving 48 mph in a 35 mph zone and attempted to pull him over at about 3:40 a.m.
Olsen, the winning pitcher in the Marlins' 10-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, continued to drive about one mile, running a stop sign before stopping at his Aventura home, Bentolila said.
He got out of his car and sat down on a plastic chair in front of his home. When backup officers arrived and tried to arrest him, Bentolila said Olsen kicked at the officers, who used a stun gun on the 6-foot-5 pitcher.
Olsen then failed a field sobriety test and refused an alcohol breath test, Bentolila said. A booking photo showed Olsen had two scrapes on his forehead over his right eye.
The Marlins did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Agent Matt Sosnick declined to talk.
The arrest was the latest in a string of troubles for the left-hander. Friday night was Olsen's return from a two-game suspension without pay after a confrontation with teammate and fellow pitcher Sergio Mitre.
Olsen received a black eye last season from his friend and former teammate, reliever Randy Messenger, in an off-the-field confrontation in St. Petersburg. He also was fined an unspecified amount in June for making an obscene gesture toward fans in Milwaukee.
Olsen will earn $380,000 this season, his third with the Marlins.

i mean his whip is still pretty far under the league average
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 8 May 2008 20:45 (eighteen years ago)
That's because folks are hitting under .200 off him when they put the ball in play (AKA that BABIP Morbs threw out). That's a .193 average when the hitter makes CONTACT, not when the hitter's at the plate. Unless I'm mistaken, even an ace like Johan Santana has a BABIP around .290, if not higher. No pitcher's that good. That, combined w/ the fact that he's not K-ing as many guys as he has in the past, most likely means he's been lucky wrt to what's happened to balls put in play against him, and there's likely to be a little stat-bump (in a bad way) coming around the corner.
Unless he and Cliff Lee underwent the same off-season training regiment. Then he's a true #1 and Cy Young front-runner fo sho.
― David R., Thursday, 8 May 2008 20:55 (eighteen years ago)
yeah i mean i'm not saying that he's gonna go 19-5 or something but he's showing flashes. sadly i never see their games so i can't corroborate whether or not he's just been getting lucky breaks, but i mean even if his babip bumps he still looks like a front of the rotation type of dude

Jun 9 3B Jorge Cantu doesn't expect to replace the offensive production of the Marlins' previous third baseman, Miguel Cabrera, but the team is more than happy with his numbers so far. Through Florida's first 62 games, Cantu is batting .287 with 11 home runs and 34 RBIs. He has three home runs and three doubles in a current streak of three multi-hit games. Cabrera is batting .270 with eight homers and 35 RBI for the Detroit Tigers. "I don't see it that way," Cantu said when told about the statistics comparison. "I'm me. I'm Cantu. I just go out there and keep performing the way I can. Hopefully at some point in the season, (I can) regain that status I had back in Tampa Bay."

defense hasn't been an issue this year + our corner outfielders have thus far shown the ability to catch fly balls
― starsky and what (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 April 2009 22:01 (seventeen years ago)
the team itself isn't sold on uggla either tbh, imo they were planning on having gaby sanchez play third base every day w/ uggla platooning with bonifacio at second but sanchez hit like .034 in the spring this year
altho he wrecked the braves this week - 6/11 with 7 or 8 rbis i wanna say - and he didn't hit a home run - big step
― starsky and what (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 April 2009 22:04 (seventeen years ago)
in fact this series they scored 21 runs in three games but only hit 1 home run - huuge turn around from last year
― starsky and what (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 April 2009 22:05 (seventeen years ago)
also capitalizing on chances that are handed to them (murphy's dropped fly ball in the santana 13 k game last sunday, kelly johnson blew a hella routine double play ball and cody ross hit a 3 run hr on the next pitch) which was a huge problem last year
― starsky and what (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 April 2009 22:07 (seventeen years ago)
CANTU singlehandedly won the series v the mets fwiw

but i am dubious this team is "really good." will take a lot to win more than 84 or so.

well why not?
― GOON carter cash (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 April 2009 00:21 (seventeen years ago)
uh, because most .500+ teams have a similar 13-game stretch at some point in the season?
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 30 April 2009 00:44 (seventeen years ago)
(i guess it's newsier if you expected Fla to lose 95 games, but I didn't)
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 30 April 2009 00:45 (seventeen years ago)
i feel u but 11-2 in the first 13 games is different than 11-2 in july press-wise - it's better for them if ppl forget about them anyway

Neyer:
As you might recall, in the Marlins' first game this season, Bonifacio hit a home run, collected three singles and stole three bases. He was, for a day, the toast of the National League. In his first seven games, he batted .485 and radio hosts were asking me if this guy was for real (you might easily imagine my answer).
Bonifacio's line since those first seven games: .165/.224/.176.
Bonifacio's season line: .250/.295/.306 -- practically dead even with his career line (which now encompasses 345 plate appearances in the majors).
Honestly, when you enter a season with a player like Bonifacio in your lineup, you're just throwing games away. The Marlins are not generally a stupid franchise. So exactly how and why does something like this happen?
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 8 May 2009 18:13 (seventeen years ago)
he's right - the thing about bonifacio is that he's even worthless as a lead off hitter because he swings at literally every pitch - the one thing is is that when he gets on he's a devil on the basepaths and he's played pretty solid defense
imo they need to bench maybin, move hanley back to leadoff and, start wes helms at third base and bat bonifacio 8th or 9th
― triple-hater protection (J0rdan S.), Friday, 8 May 2009 18:28 (seventeen years ago)
which means moving bonifacio back to left field
― triple-hater protection (J0rdan S.), Friday, 8 May 2009 18:31 (seventeen years ago)
Why would you bench Maybin over Bonifacio? Maybin's got actual upside.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 8 May 2009 18:42 (seventeen years ago)
yeah idk, either way having them bat 1-2 at this point is detrimental as hell
― triple-hater protection (J0rdan S.), Friday, 8 May 2009 18:46 (seventeen years ago)
i dont know this for sure but besides hanley and cantu the guys with the highest OBP are hermida (top 3 in the nl in walk iirc) and john baker - those two need to be at the top of the lineup

No, I would've put it in the "surprising analysis" thread, then.
Pujols' advantage over Ramirez is still substantial IMO though not overwhelming. The BBWAA's Albert Fatigue is the X factor.

STATEMENT FROM MLBPA, FLORIDA MARLINS AND MLB REGARDING MARLINS’ COMPLIANCE WITH REVENUE SHARING PROVISIONS OF THE BASIC AGREEMENT
The following joint statement was issued today by the Major League Baseball Players Association, the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball and the Florida Marlins:
The Basic Agreement requires that each Club use its revenue sharing receipts in an effort to improve its performance on the field. This requirement is of obvious importance to all players, Clubs and fans of the game. In recent years, the Union has had concerns that certain Clubs have not lived up to this requirement, and has consulted regularly with the Commissioner’s Office about those concerns. The Florida Marlins are one of a number of Clubs that have been discussed.
After extensive discussions, the three parties are pleased to announce that they have reached an agreement regarding the Florida Marlins’ continued compliance with Article XXIV(B)(5)(a) of the Basic Agreement.
MLBPA Executive Director Michael Weiner said:“In response to our concerns that revenue sharing proceeds have not been used as required, the Marlins have assured the Union and the Commissioner’s Office that they plan to use such proceeds to increase player payroll annually as they move toward the opening of their new ballpark. Today’s agreement, which covers the period 2010 through 2012, calls for ongoing communication among the Marlins, the Commissioner’s Office and the Union as the Marlins proceed with that plan. It also permits, after consultation among all parties, adjustments in the Marlins’ plan to respond to unforeseen developments, and calls for arbitral intervention if disagreements arise. We greatly appreciate the willingness of the Commissioner’s Office and the Marlins to engage with us and ensure that all terms of the Basic Agreement are met.”
Marlins’ President David Samson said:“The Marlins have consistently made every effort to put the best product on the field and our record supports the fact that we have been successful in that regard. Throughout the discussions, the Marlins maintained that there had been no violation of the Basic Agreement at any time. While we know that the Marlins will always comply with the Basic Agreement, we were happy to work cooperatively with the Union and the Commissioner’s Office on this matter.”
MLB Executive Vice President, Labor Relations Rob Manfred added:“The Basic Agreement contains confidentiality provisions that preclude the parties from publicly discussing the specifics of the Marlins’ finances. There will, therefore, be no comment by any of these parties on any further specifics of this agreement. All three parties agree that the Basic Agreement provision on the proper use of revenue sharing dollars is an important part of our agreement. Today’s announcement is the product of a positive dialogue between the MLBPA, the Commissioner’s Office and the Club.”
