Fine w giving judge more AAV but more years seems dumb

yep and the literal only reason to give him more years rather than raise his average value is the luxury tax

The Yankees lead off with Judge today, third game in his career they've done so. He's got to be the tallest leadoff guy ever, no?

Their record, looking at their everyday lineup (and Judge aside), mystifies me, but if Gerrit Cole is your worst starter by the numbers, and he's having a decent year, that's pretty good.

this team has a seven-game lead
It's not just the players and the manager who are hearing it: Hal Steinbrenner got booed by the Yankee Stadium crowd while walking out to present Paul O'Neill with a very nice framed replica of his Monument Park plaque and pinstriped number.— Lindsey Adler (@lindseyadler) August 21, 2022

not for long

We may have talked about this before: Paul O'Neill seems like a low bar for jersey retirement. The Jays have retired two: Alomar and Halladay. They do have a consolation prize, the "Level of Excellence," where they hang the number from the rafters--there are 11 of those (not sure if that includes Alomar and Halladay).

Paul o Neill’s number was retired? Uhhh

yankee fans have a strange but real attachment to o’neill; my theory is that it’s because westchester county is home to many similarly surly irish-americans

Got interested in some of the other long-standing franchises and retired numbers, and the Yankees are way on the generous end of the spectrum: 23. The Red Sox have retired 10; the Dodgers, 11; the Cubs, 6; the Phillies, 9; the Giants, 11; the Tigers, 8. (I only counted Jackie Robinson for the Dodgers.) A good parallel for O'Neill might be Junior Gilliam, who was a good player during a fabled era for the franchise, but not close to HOF-level. Bizarrely, Gilliam didn't even seem to get on the HOF ballot.

Yankees definitely got lucky today: what would have been a game-tying hit bounced directly off the wall, holding the runner at third, then they got a bad, game-ending strike call.
― clemenza, Sunday, 4 September 2022 21:23 (two years ago) link
I watched highlights of that game and you were right -- such a shitty strike call, especially considering the situation.
