i love lindor and even tho he's a met i still have a hard time rooting for him to fail, but his slash numbers have been pretty concerning for a bit now even dating back to last season. his SLG percentage has fallen off a cliff and if he's not providing elite power at that position he's kinda just... a high AVG/low OBP shortstop getting into his 30s... it feels pretty dicey to me longterm. they really need him to be an MVP level player for the next 4-5 years because the back half of that contract is gonna be ugly given the type of player he is

It was a great first half! But back to cold hard reality now. Offense has dissolved and can’t seem to buy a hit with RISP all month. I’m so used to them dramatically collapsing, but each year comes with a different flavor of what-ifs. This year you really wanted to see what Degrom could have done had he stayed healthy. And Lindor was finally hitting consistently well before being injured.
― Michael F Gill, Saturday, 21 August 2021 23:34 (two years ago) link
everyone has injuries, and they've had -- as ever -- perhaps more important ones than most. but . . . also cohen is kind of right?
conforto and dom smith and mcneil have had terrible years, but at least they're not making what lindor is
stroman has been fantastic, walker merely average but easily above expectations. may and diaz (again) have been major disappointments. if degrom had been healthy they'd be right in it but also: fucking hit better!

Morbs would have done his traditional SEASON OVER post about a week or two ago. Villar and Pillar, despite not putting up impressive numbers, have had a lot of clutch hits this year. Jose Peraza too. But pretty much every other batter aside from Alonso and Nimmo has underperformed, especially with runners in scoring position. Surprisingly the bullpen (including Diaz) has been mostly good this year, throughout all the turmoil. Although anything would be better than 2019.

i'm very excited to listen to the mets broadcast crew today for a couple reasons. first, they're great, and i'm keith hernandez. but more importantly, i figure they will either not talk much at all about the thumbs down stuff, or talk about it briefly or in passing or something. the cardinals announcing team, whoever it is, will talk about it at length and find a way to spend an inning or two on it during each game of the series. somehow, they will have terrible opinions about it, and if jim edmonds is on, he'll have a just bonkers opinions of some sort and will then dan mclaughlin will start to apologize to him for disagreeing but stress that the facts are facts. at this, edmonds will double down and assert his opinion as the truth.
meanwhile over in the mets broadcast they appear to be enjoying a baseball game

that may place in those end-of-year "worst called strike / worst called ball" articles
for those not catching this game, so far the home plate ump called a pitch thrown near the middle of the zone a ball, the third base umpire called a ball that was at least 6-7 feet fair a foul ball, and the first base umpire's right cheek was smashed by an errant through by SS edmundo sosa. the umpire's attention was completely focused on first base, so he didn't see it coming at all.
i am worried about the final umpire at 2B.

The Mets have already been turned down by a handful of targets in their search for a new baseball operations head. Each of Theo Epstein, Billy Beane, David Stearns, Matt Arnold, Scott Harris and Brandon Gomes had been raised as potential candidates only to later be ruled out of consideration.
Cardinals general manager Michael Girsch can be added to that list, as Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports (Twitter link) that New York reached out to the Cards for permission to speak with him last week. Girsch, however, declined to pursue the opportunity, electing to remain in St. Louis instead.
girsch is pretty much a no name in st louis, for what it's worth. so good move to be turned down by him?
is this press (mlb trade rumors) right that the dynamic is these various candidates turning them down? if so, yikes

I think for at least the 7th year in a row, Mets may have had the greatest potential for both incredible feats and incredible failure. get ready for some jordan hicks. a guy who throws 100 mph sinkers, 91 mph sliders, doesn't strike out as many as you'd think, and is now trying to become a starting pitcher with only two pitches. note: he was a starter in the minors before getting promoted very quickly, and upon reaching the majors as a reliever he dropped from 4 pitches down to his current TWO (2). a "deep cut" storyline of the cardinals this year is whether he can bring back a 3rd pitch and get the game into the 5th or 6th inning (at some point this year - his goal for today should be a solid 4 innings), or if the ship has sailed
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 22:16 (one year ago) link
I feel I am already familiar with the Hicks saga due to you KM! I remember when he first came up. Turning him into a starter is an interesting angle, considering his past injury / closer issues. If Flaherty is still around, do you think they still try this out? LGM.
― Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 23:16 (one year ago) link
If Flaherty is still healthy, this doesn't happen. It's interesting, though, what would have happened when the inevitable injuries occurred later in the season - if Flaherty goes down in mid-May, does Hicks suddenly get the 5th rotation spot after being in the late-bullpen the previous 2 months? i don't think so, but not sure. i'm glad he's getting the opportunity - both hicks and reyes were once thought of as starting pitchers before injuries and circumstances led them to the bullpen. they're both so injury prone, it's hard to imagine a long-term future for either one. but i'm loving this opportunity to see what hicks can do while his arms is still mythical

It’s impressive. This is the first time he’s really had any sort of consistent playing time since he came up in 2018. He could be a late bloomer offensively a la McNeil. His 2020 was pretty incredible. They retroactively said he was playing with an injury in 2021, but his 2022 has been worse. JD Davis, who is in a similar season-long malaise, has had some great moments/clutch hits this season, where Dom has just looked lost. 101 wins, a combined no hitter, McNeil wins the MLB batting title, Alonso with a share of the MLB RBI crown, and mostly good vibes throughout the season. Some great comebacks and amazing work by Diaz. Hard to complain but wouldn’t have minded a game 163 tiebreaker since they ended up with same record as the Braves.

“That’s when we realized the level of stickiness on his hand was much worse than it was even in the initial inspection that had taken place two innings prior,” Bellino said. “So following the proper protocols, Phil immediately recognized it. Phil then asked me to come in to verify that the hand was too sticky. Both Phil and I touched his hand. As far as stickiness, level of stickiness, this was the stickiest that it has been since I’ve been inspecting hands, which now goes back three seasons.

Max Scherzer: “I thought I was gonna get in front of a neutral arbitrator but I wasn't. It was going to be through MLB. So given that process, I really wasn't gonna come out on top. I’m gonna follow what the Mets wanted me to do, and that was accept the suspension.”— Will Sammon (@WillSammon) April 21, 2023

― Bee OK, Friday, 21 April 2023 03:26 (one year ago) link
"No one can explain what is too sticky," Boras said. "There are no units of stickiness to quantify. How do you appropriately enforce? MLB attempts to level the playing field by using standards that are not measurable. Further, one umpire has a stickiness standard that is different than all other umpires.
"Under this standard, players are not given due process of how to use an approved substance provided by the league," Boras added. "This reminds me of a local wine taster -- he likes what likes."

Despite all the current pitching (and winning) problems, it’s not like the people who left are doing much better. Walker and Bassitt haven’t been good so far, Degrom is on the IL again, and if you wanted to sign Rodon he’d also be on the shelf. Correa’s current awful start would also not have been tolerated in NYC after all the hoopla surrounding his physical. Brett Baty is looking better and better each day.

I remember seeing his name trending on Twitter several times when he was in a lineup and people were absolutely raging /blaming Showalter & the thinking was that continuing to play him was Buck’s decision - I’m kind of surprised that it was FO but again I’m not that familiar with the Mets inner workings at all so that was probably obvious to you.
Showalter was told he had to play Vogelbach, the source said.Part of the manager’s opposition to Vogelbach was philosophical: Showalter viewed the DH spot as one that should be used on a rotation, allowing position players a partial rest while remaining in the lineup. But Showalter — who was fired last weekend, allowing new president of baseball operations David Stearns the opportunity to pick his own manager following the Mets’ 75-win season — also had an issue with Vogelbach’s limited skill set, according to a source.

sort of a painful watch. i'm guessing the team that lost ruben tejada to a broken leg is trying to take the high road on sliding into second?

it'd be funny if someone ran toward the door of whoever teaches running there but then just kind of slowed down and turned off toward the water fountain as they neared the handle

mets *just* postponed tonight's game, despite it raining all day and there being a flood watch
bet they do the same thing tomorrow as well

Why stop there?

is there a youtube of the one-track mind mr. met singing his dang song in the rain

There’s a picture the run during rain delays where he’s holding and umbrella and holding his hand out. He is very sad when it rains!

We are in a rain delay. We will provide updates as they become available. pic.twitter.com/vXu5bjiOqV— New York Mets (@Mets) August 5, 2020
He’s probably still quietly singing under that umbrella though. He doesn’t quit!

considered suggesting that the mets and marlins trade managers (hey, it happened to chuck tanner) but now that one of them has a win, forget it
also i honestly have no idea who either of their managers are, beyond Not Buck

That Mets fan needs an official position.

100%. Weekly midgame report from the stands, minimum
― H.P, Friday, 5 April 2024 14:26 (two weeks ago) link
Omg, I finally tune into another Mets game and they’re showing “Max” in the stands (still dressed to the nines!) after the Mets get a hit! Is he now a permanent fixture of SNY? Gotta watch more Mets!

Real “Mets Messiah” vibes happening in that photo
they showed him a bunch the other night dressed in a purple faux fur coat. the tv booth did not comment on him though.

They should cut to a "Max report" from the stands every game

the mets are now officially .500

i'm not impressed by max fwiw. bad interviewee. seems like a poser
Why have a bad take when you could simply have no take at all?

swing at the first pitch and it'll be 23-0 mets dodgers. don't do that, he'll throw a perfect game
― H.P, Saturday, 20 April 2024 02:26 (five days ago) link
That looked painful for Alvarez (also think he was out there, oh well)
Yamamoto's fastball is disgustingly hittable. .322 xba/ .554 xslg

Mets bullpen has been surprisingly great so far. Presence of Diaz certainly helps.

lindor's finally waking up on the left side of the plate
very silly game today, the kind they'd lose if it actually mattered - but hey, i'll take it!
