lol

Karl Malone, Monday, 28 September 2020 17:32 (three years ago) link

i watched the cardinals clinch last night, but didn't bother looking up who they were playing until this morning (reading articles summarizing all the different possibilities just gives me a headache).

...did the milwaukee brewers just make the playoffs?

Karl Malone, Monday, 28 September 2020 17:34 (three years ago) link

they backed into it lol

I know you and I are natural enemies in this field but you gotta admit having them take out the Dodgers would be pretty fuckin funny

Imagine the outrage if the hated houston astros win the WS after sneaking into the playoffs with a losing record

I'm rooting for the astros

, Monday, 28 September 2020 18:12 (three years ago) link

xp

oh absolutely. to me that's the main goal, the actual winner of the WS is a couple paragraphs down

Karl Malone, Monday, 28 September 2020 18:17 (three years ago) link

ok yeah an Astros WS win would be awesome b/c it would possibly end this whole "16 teams make it" bullshit

frogbs, Monday, 28 September 2020 18:19 (three years ago) link

even if manfred stays the course I just want to hear him say "expanded postseason was a rousing success, everyone loves it" like he does with everything else that sucks

I've watched a bit of tonight's game. I think I actually want the Astros to win everything--a cheating, sub-.500 team hated by everyone outside of Houston winning would ensure the validity of this thing vanishes from history.

clemenza, Monday, 12 October 2020 02:08 (three years ago) link

No. This is 2020. One bad thing will not cancel out another bad thing.
Would love to see the Rays win it all, and I could live with either either NL team (assuming I don’t ever have to see the tomahawk chop this year). But an Astros ws victory would be just another crushing blow to my psyche and victory for evil. No amount of wishful thinking could make me stomach the site of those cheating SOBs celebrating on the field.

this isn't a real year! everything is imaginary

, Monday, 12 October 2020 05:23 (three years ago) link

If one of the other three teams win, what will they have won? A season that probably never should have been played, a postseason that let in too many teams and was based on 60 games, and a postseason schedule that's freakish. I'm sure it would come with mixed feelings for any of the three. The Astros winning would, for me, be the perfect rebuke to the entire season.

clemenza, Monday, 12 October 2020 05:32 (three years ago) link

agreed w/ Clemenza and I feel like I have more reason to hate on Houston than most of us here

anything—anything—to kill off stupid expanded playoffs

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Monday, 12 October 2020 16:08 (three years ago) link

the astros winning would not be a rebuke, nor would it kill off stupid expanded playoffs

all it would do is reward the cheaters and validate their earlier title because they were good enough to win it again without (presumably) cheating

i know earlnash is still bitter about the 1981 reds getting jobbed, but there's no asterisk next to the dodgers' championship that year and ultimately the only asterisk the astros would get is in your minds #fff

mookieproof, Monday, 12 October 2020 16:28 (three years ago) link

I was 4 at the time... why would the dodgers have an asterisk that year?

president of my cat (Karl Malone), Monday, 12 October 2020 16:51 (three years ago) link

The Dodgers '81 title has always felt a little tainted to me--not nearly to the degree of this year--because of the Reds' weird season.

I have mixed feelings on Houston's previous success, before they got caught. There's a lot of talent there, and Verlander then Cole were a big part of it. When the story broke, I didn't immediately write off their title. I wasn't sure.

clemenza, Monday, 12 October 2020 17:13 (three years ago) link

I feel like the 06 Cards still have a bit of a stink on them simply because they were close to .500

I'm under no delusion that the Astros winning would stop Manfred from doing everything in his power to maintain the expanded postseason. He would probably claim in one breath that a sub-.500 team winning proves that his method allows for the cream to rise to the top and that the Astros are actually the great team they always claimed to be, so stop giving him shit about their lack of punishment. He's made it clear that he's a shameless worm who will happily abuse a crisis to get his agenda passed.

But it would still be broadly unpopular and cause an uproar and it might get the point across that the playoffs are too random to be this deep. (It would've been better if the Brewers won too.) And I'd rather it stay unpopular for as long as possible because it sucks. And I've already seen people on reddit and Twitter turning in its favor because they liked the chaos of an 8-game day.

Also it'd be really funny

, Monday, 12 October 2020 17:33 (three years ago) link

the astros winning would not be a rebuke, nor would it kill off stupid expanded playoffs

I'm not so sure...the cheating and the whole way that organization handled it was a huge embarrassment for the league. There is *nobody* at MLB offices who isn't praying thet are eliminated in this series. If they were to wun the WS with a losing record to it, the blowback would be universal.

Last year that was the Astros, and Altuve knocked in the series-ending walkoff homer. This year I'm cheering for the Rays, and I now know the Astros are a bunch of cheaters, but I still feel a little for him and his fielding errors. But just a little.

(xpost) I've subscribed to this theory the last few years that whenever every conceivable sign points to a game going one way, expect the opposite to happen; sports just doesn't make sense a lot of the time. So with 90% of baseball fans nauseous about the prospect of the Astros in the WS, wouldn't surprise me at all if the Rays win.

mookieproof, Saturday, 17 October 2020 18:42 (three years ago) link

Or, if you believe momentum to be a myth, probability would heavily favour the Rays. A .667 team should beat a .483 team about 63% of the time, all else being equal. The likelihood of the .483 teams winning four in a row would be--I think--.37 x .37 x .37 x .37, or about a 2% likelihood. (But I'm not sure. Does every game have to be treated independently, in which case it's the same 37% for tonight? I mean, the probability of flipping a head is always 50%, but if you step back, the probability of four in a row is about 6%.)

given the unbalanced schedule other things are not equal, but yeah

it's the same 37% (or whatever) for tonight, although the starting pitcher matchup will make predicting any one game by overall records essentially meaningless

both teams have scored 21 runs in the series

mookieproof, Saturday, 17 October 2020 18:53 (three years ago) link

Even factoring in the cheating, I think the Astros are a much better team than their record would indicate.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 17 October 2020 19:11 (three years ago) link

Agree with that, and to take their record literally is, I think--putting the cheating aside--wrong. It reminds me of the ILB poll a few years ago that included the 2000 Yankees as one of the worst WS winners because they were 87-74 for the season. It was, within the context of the Yankee-revolving-door, the same basic team as the '98/99/01 teams; the core was there anyway, plus other overlap. This year's Astros team is more or less the same Astros team of the last few years--not as good, but realistically closer to the WS team than to a .480 team.

clemenza, Saturday, 17 October 2020 20:14 (three years ago) link

Cardinals 2006 team was probably one of their worst to make the playoffs yet won it all. Looking it up they were only 83-78 that year. Same deal though, as they were in the playoffs nearly every year those days.

I was just thinking of Cole (so more the regular-season 2020 team); you're right, they're without Verlander right now, and that is decidedly not as strong a team.

If you hate the Astros and you're bigger on karma than probability, I would think that losing tonight, after coming all the way back--as opposed to getting swept and shrugging "Not our year"--would be the best possible way to see them exit. (Unless you're a big Rays fan, where the sweep would have obviously been better.)

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 18 October 2020 01:46 (three years ago) link

you don't have to appreciate their deranged cheapness just because they make it work or because the front office displays unprecedented ingenuity. they lack a concrete team identity because the FO refuses to hold onto 90% of their players when they start to cost money. they're a team of part-time journeymen and it's not because they have to be, it's because the FO is smart enough to make their cheapness work. when i root for a team to win i'm rooting for players, not executives and a probably also underpaid analytics department

For as long as he mixes in the occasional great game with lots of games where he seems to lose it in the middle innings, I don't think it will. Lots of back and forth on this in the Kershaw thread. As I said there: I don't think it's clutch or character or anything as ephemeral as that, but I do think there's good reason to believe that he presses in certain situations, and that--a totally human thing--that ends up feeding upon itself.

Let’s see if they do the same with Kershaw.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 21 October 2020 02:08 (three years ago) link

Roberts can't possibly be insane enough to send Kershaw out, can he? You couldn't have a better situation to help him put this thing to rest. (Even if you end up losing the game, you'd still get something important in return...anyway, beginning to look moot.)

clemenza, Wednesday, 21 October 2020 02:17 (three years ago) link

Yeah it’s safe to run him out there at this point

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 21 October 2020 02:23 (three years ago) link

Don't get this at all. The difference between Kershaw leaving with a five-run lead after 5 or after 6 is nothing--either way, he pitched great. To give the Rays a chance to score a couple of runs next inning and bring to mind that again is pointless. I know you don't want to burn through the bullpen needlessly, but still.

clemenza, Wednesday, 21 October 2020 02:24 (three years ago) link

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 21 October 2020 02:26 (three years ago) link

that was a defensive breakdown at the end - CF OF bobble, then the throw was offline, which was why someone had to cut it off, then the cut-off throw was to the wrong side of the plate. will smith had plenty of time to retrieve and offline throw and return back to the plate, but i guess he didn't realize arozarena had wiped out so he was trying to save every split second. i blame that play on the CF, most of all

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 07:48 (three years ago) link

Just scratching the surface, yes--did they know before the game? Wouldn't they time the testing so you'd have results before the game, rather than the 7th inning? That doesn't make sense.

clemenza, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 12:52 (three years ago) link

There's a long Rosenthal story in The Athletic that I haven't had a chance to read yet.

"MLB said it learned in the second inning that the result of Turner’s test from Monday had been inconclusive; the league had been shipping hundreds of tests from Texas to its lab in Utah each day, and the results typically came back in the early evening. Once the uncertainty about Turner arose, the league asked the lab to expedite his test from earlier Tuesday. When the result came back positive, league officials told the Dodgers to remove Turner from the game.

Why didn’t the league exercise an abundance of caution and get Turner off the field immediately after learning he might be positive? Apparently, because inconclusive results are not uncommon, and the standard procedure was to run a second test.

Would Game 7 have been played on Wednesday if the Rays had rallied to defeat the Dodgers? The league said it would have reviewed the matter with its medical advisors, but similar circumstances during the regular season normally led to postponements."

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 21:21 (three years ago) link

It's so weird...It looked like the WS (and postseason in general) was going to go a long way towards restoring a botched season. The right team won, there were dramatic games and comebacks and near comebacks, and a new best-player-in-the-game debate sprung up. Instead, the WS will be remembered for two things: Turner reminding everybody of and exacerbating the game's handling of COVID, and Snell getting lifted. The second is part of the game, but it pushes a button, the takeover of analytics. I'm not down on that: a franchise like Tampa Bay would never stay competitive if not for smart use of analytics. My post last night about taking out Snell was basically me accepting that that's how things are done now--you can't ask a guy to do something he's never asked to do. But I think it's fair to say that the game has alienated and probably lost a few fans when analytics becomes rigid dogma.

clemenza, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 22:35 (three years ago) link

anderson was tremendous during the regular season but had allowed runs in six straight appearances before last night.

he, a righty, was brought in to face mookie betts, who had absolutely terrible numbers vs lefties (like snell) this season. he was also committed to then face corey seager, who crushes righties.

and sometimes in world series you do indeed ask your cy young-winning pitchers to do things they don't normally do -- i mean it's not like he was at 110 pitches or something.

i think it's less a matter of 'too much analytics' than weighing certain analytics too heavily and considering them cut-and-dry when they're more just guidelines.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 22:57 (three years ago) link

You ask players to do stuff they don’t normally do all the time in the playoffs. Doesn’t always work, but it’s common to see guys pitch on short rest, or have guy a play out of position or go an extra inning or two.
Cash, imho, was a great manager all season - but I don’t think he adjusted his thinking for the World Series.

clemenza, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 23:22 (three years ago) link

And maybe they should occasionally let Snell pitch deeper into a regular-season game; then they're not asking him to do something he never does. (Complicated by the fact he was coming back from something, I think.)

clemenza, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 23:24 (three years ago) link

Sheehan:

Snell, to pick the example in play, has a 592 OPS allowed when facing batters the first time, 711 the second time, and 742 the third time. That understates his decline; Snell’s strikeout-to-walk ratio drops from 3.5 to 2.4 to 2.0 with each pass through the lineup. His strikeout rate drops from 34% to 26% to 22%. Letting Snell face a lineup a third time is a bad idea, and Kevin Cash knows this. In five postseason starts prior to last night, Cash had let Snell face 11 batters a third time. They were 3-for-10 with a homer, a double and a walk off him, roughly what Randy Arozarena is hitting. Just last Wednesday, Cash tried to get Snell through the bottom of the fifth facing the top of the Dodgers' order; a walk to Mookie Betts and a single by Corey Seager forced him to go to the pen.

In that start, as long as we’re talking about “dealing,” Snell had a no-hitter through 16 batters on 71 pitches. The next four batters: walk, homer, walk, single. Tonight, Cash went and got him after 18 batters and 73 pitches.

Every pitcher is dealing until he's not, and you literally need only go back to Blake Snell’s last start to see that.

A manager’s job isn’t to sit there and wait until his pitcher makes it plainly obvious he needs to be removed. His job, especially in Game Six of the World Series with a one-run lead, is to make sure it never gets to that point. Blake Snell isn’t handled like Jack Morris, and treating him that way is how you lose baseball games.

This was the big topic of the night, at least until events overtook it. Cash, though, made the right decision. He made the decision he’s been making with this team all year long, not letting the starters lose the game, getting them out before they deteriorate, knowing -- based on the numbers both general and specific -- that they will deteriorate, knowing that he has a deep and powerful bullpen for just this task. This is how they win games, how they won 51 of the 80 games they played, how they got to within two wins of a championship on a payroll that wouldn’t cover the Dodgers’ coffee budget. This is how the Rays have won all year, and dunking on it because it didn’t work in Game Six of the World Series may not be emphasizing the second part of that clause enough.

He goes on to say what you might want to quibble with is the choice of reliever to follow Snell. But that really, what the Rays needed was for somebody to hit besides Arozarena.

Unreal from Turner. I am a Dodgers fan and its really sad to have a world series tainted, especially because of all the decrying of a tainted world series in 2017 that has been done by the fan base! I know its a false equivalence, but it just would have been nice to earn one without having to apologise afterwards :\

Instead, the WS will be remembered for two things: Turner reminding everybody of and exacerbating the game's handling of COVID, and Snell getting lifted.

Yes to Turner, also Arozarena's HR's, the crazy game 4, Seager winning WS (and NCLS) MVP. It was a well-played series between two great teams. As for Snell, this isn't Pedro and Grady Little, nobody will remember it by next season. He threw fewer than 6 IP per start in the year he won the Cy Young. He has 21 IP in the seventh inning or later in his entire career. If he stayed in, he would have gotten two, maybe three more outs? Snell got rocked in his third time through the order against the Dodgers in Game 2. Why do people think this represents a turning point in the use (or misuse) of analytics?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 29 October 2020 09:51 (three years ago) link

Bret Phillips slipped my mind--for sure.

As for Snell, this isn't Pedro and Grady Little, nobody will remember it by next season.

I'll see you in 2029; I'm 0-1 so far.

Meanwhile, Turner rates barely a mention on mlb.com.

Of course he doesn’t. It’s the Pravda of the game.

yeah i really thought this would be a bigger story and black eye on the WS

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 29 October 2020 16:03 (three years ago) link

I think it's a big story elsewhere.

All that's really left, though, is to construct a timeline and figure out if it's all on Turner. If it is, he'll have to live with the consequences both short- and long-term, but that's about it. But depending upon when the Dodgers or the league knew of his positivity, things may escalate. (The fact that they couldn't keep him in that room is already a problem.)

clemenza, Thursday, 29 October 2020 16:07 (three years ago) link

They all knew before G6 that he was potentially positive, and he played anyway.

What about the tests done on the entire Dodgers team after the game? Any positives?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 29 October 2020 17:38 (three years ago) link

I’ll remember Seager becoming Bonds at SS and Kershaw finally getting a championship as much as the Snell switch and Turner’s stupid decision.

And the one highlight has to be that Philipps hit.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 29 October 2020 18:56 (three years ago) link

Turner is just one more dumba$$ in a country full of them.

I'd say better armor up next season against the Cardinals and Marlins, as I guess Turner was one of the guys saying "we got to come together to make the season happen" in interviews when those couple clubs had their outbreaks.

Oh well, fxxx the Dodgers anyway.

people still define buck showalter's entire career by a pitching change he made in a wild card game in 2016, no way this dies soon

people still define grady little's entire career by *not* pulling pedro in game 7 of the 2003 ALCS (which apparently david ortiz forgot about)

tbf, pedro is a hall of famer and nick anderson has a DWI conviction and felony assault charge for which he received seven years probation

Stolen from a meme: The free-spending Dodgers traded away 2x 2020 Cy Young candidates (Ryu & Maeda) and still had the best record in MLB and won the World Series.

awfully weird year for joc pederson -- i mean they were actively trying to get rid of him, but then arte moreno got bored, and then he sucked during the regular season, and then he was pretty great in the playoffs and won the world series

Haven't heard boo about Justin Turner. Maybe the election crowded that out, maybe MLB put it in the O.J.-searching-for-the-real-killer file.

justin turner is going to end up signing like a pro-rated 1y/$5m deal in may because the system is broken. you'll hear boo about him then
