So the Cespedis injury that caused his contract to be renegotiated was caused by a fall while tussling with a wild boar?!

Yes.

(I'm going to be ruthless about new dated threads this year btw. Indulge me.)

Actually, I don't see any indication he "tussled" with it...

“Tussle”, “side-step” - he was involved in an altercation with a wild fucking boar!

Earlier today, LHP James Paxton underwent a microscopic lumbar discectomy with removal of a peridiscal cyst. The surgery was performed by Dr. Andrew Dossett in Dallas, Texas. His approximate timeline to return to Major League action is 3-4 months.

Diamondbacks right-hander Mike Leake has a fracture in his left wrist, an injury he hopes won’t keep him from making the Opening Day roster.

Leake said he expects to have limited activity over the next two weeks as he allows the fracture to heal, though he said he can continue to keep his right arm strong by playing catch without catching return throws.

Leake said he slipped and fell on the basketball court at home as he was chasing a dog.

“He was a little disobedient to my other dog so I had to chase after him,” Leake said.

Boone said Severino will he examined by Dr Chris Ahmad tomorrow. Said Severino will he shut down for at least a few days. It’s been an off and on issue so Boone said it’s definitely “concerning.”

"The Yankees, for example, decided to stay en masse and work out informally at George M. Steinbrenner Field, according to Zack Britton. But the question — with no firm date on a return — is how long even those groups will remain unified, especially if the shutdown drags into late April or May."

Does a torn Achilles have have long-term implications? I don't want this to sound callous, but if it doesn't, missing this season is a blessing.

clemenza, Tuesday, 4 August 2020 15:37 (two months ago) link

i think Wainwright tore his. dude took a long time to bounce back fully iirc.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 4 August 2020 16:27 (two months ago) link

Seems like the kind of thing that, even if it technically healed, might cause a pitcher to alter his delivery in some way, and that that ends up creating problems.

clemenza, Tuesday, 4 August 2020 16:44 (two months ago) link

Eno’s story is even more relevant four days later. One executive cites a combination of the sport’s shortened spring training, lengthy shutdown, limited competition in summer training camp and few off-days as potential contributing factors to the wave of injuries. https://t.co/ULEEINZGXq

After 3 games as DH, Yordan Alvarez is back on the IL due to knee discomfort (MRI results pending). He claims he has been playing through knee pain since AA (age 21, currently 23yo). At 6'5" and listed at a very generous 227 lb, that cannot be a good sign.
