how do you feel about mickey as a manager?

what questionable things has he done so far? i haven't been following closely

Karl Malone, Sunday, 7 April 2019 16:30 (five years ago) link

Twitter/reddit/sbnation fans are "out for blood" (Dicomo's words) because he's supposedly making bad bullpen / lineup moves, double switching, bunting in the wrong places. He's gambled a few times with using a reliever for a second inning and has gotten burned for a few runs, but it's kind of overblown because everyone in the bullpen has been struggling aside from Diaz. It's always pretty easy to Armchair GM using hindsight. Once a member of Panic City, always a member of Panic City though.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 8 April 2019 23:55 (five years ago) link

i am familiar with the situation. when the manager is doing questionable things that aren't working out well, and it's tough to tell where the fault lies with the manager and where it's just weird baseball luck.

these are not all of the possible side effects (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 9 April 2019 00:10 (five years ago) link

I'd argue that none of the questionable moves have directly ended up in a loss yet. Just stuff like, "we had a comfortable lead in the game, but then the reliever struggled and we had to use Diaz again and I CANT TAKE IT."

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 00:38 (five years ago) link

I have not seen a game all the way thru yet, but the fan sites say Callaway is addicted to double switching.

If the Mets are not going to use Díaz here — when he’s clearly better than the other option, when he hasn’t pitched in three days, when the bases are loaded in a one-run game, when the heart of the opposing order is up, when it’s a division rival, when the pitcher’s spot in the order is a full nine batters away, when it’s literally the highest-leverage plate appearance of the Mets’ season to this point — then it’s fair to wonder when they will.

“He’s not going to get four outs,” manager Mickey Callaway said after the game. “He’s going to get three.”

If you can somehow forget how depressing the bullpen is, this season is almost worth it for batting title Mcneil and ROY Alonso. (Actually the whole offense being non-anemic is great).

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 01:47 (four years ago) link

not really sure who to blame (besides the wilpons)

the bullpen was supposed to be a strength! they spent money on familia and prospects on diaz but nevertheless they've somehow used chris flexen in eight games

degrom has been not cy, but still pretty good. they've gotten lucky with vargas, apart from the assaulting reporters thing. syndergaard and wheeler and matz just aren't what they were supposed to be

lucky with mcneil and alonso and ramos! unlucky with cano and nimmo getting hurt and lagares being a complete offensive void. well, maybe that last one was predictable

at any rate, i think we've finally confirmed that despite its former promise, this starting rotation has run its course and should get on with its life's work

mookieproof, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 02:28 (four years ago) link

this starting rotation has run its course

have syndergaard and wheeler really pitched that badly? i assumed they will bounce back sooner or later, unless it's injury-related. i'd say sell high on vargas and just sell matz, keep the other guys

i will never make a typo ever again (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 02:53 (four years ago) link

Ramos' offensive numbers are in line with his career overall (eg 105 OPS+ this year, 104 career).

Syndergaard's FIP is 3.72, highest ever for him but not terrible. Matz's is an unsightly 5.41.

DiComo above expects Wheeler and Vargas to be gone. Mets intent on being "competitive" next year so Thor stays.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 04:44 (four years ago) link

i don't think they had much of a clue about mcneil -- last year they started him in double-a at age 26

to be fair, no one else did either (except for alonso!) mcneil's weird; even last august keith law was all 'he's not a prospect'. i think it was kind of luck that he got called up and immediately started hitting to the point where they couldn't send him back down, because he had quad-a written all over him

he might be my favorite current ballplayer

Pete Alonso is taking his Home Run Derby prep seriously. He's out practicing with his cousin, Derek Morgan, for the second day in a row.

By my count, he's hit 16 homers in 39 swings, including several to the batter's eye in straightaway center and two to the second deck in left.

He's one of those people who should stay off Twitter, for sure. I'll put it this way: if your team is winning, you love his theatrics and intensity--he was one of the highlights of '15 and '16. But if your team's going nowhere and he starts getting into it with the umpire in the third inning over borderline calls, or he comes charging off the mound cursing and pumping his fist after striking out a guy when he's down 6-2, that's not nearly as much fun. That's why I thought he'd be perfect for the Yankees, or for some other team headed for the post-season.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 August 2019 18:01 (four years ago) link

i don't think he ever did? he got 113 plate appearances last year over four separate big league stints, which is a tough situation for most anyone

that said, he almost has to hit this well to offset his defense -- a perfect met

mookieproof, Thursday, 22 August 2019 18:45 (four years ago) link

fair point on the 4 stints, but when they got him i looked at the stats and just thought "someone the Astros couldn't fix". i guess they didn't try hard enough.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 August 2019 18:58 (four years ago) link

i think it's less that they didn't try than that they're so loaded there was no room for him

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 1 September 2019 20:48 (four years ago) link

Way higher batting average, same amount of RBIs for a cheaper price? Grandal does have more power though.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 1 September 2019 20:58 (four years ago) link

And better OBP, and much much better defense. He is twice the price for three times the value.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 1 September 2019 21:13 (four years ago) link

Marginally better OBP? My memory of his defense is definitely clouded by his postseason performance last year though.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 1 September 2019 22:41 (four years ago) link

What I'm saying is that a higher average is null if the other player both has a higher OBP and slugging.

Improbably, inexplicably, incredibly, the Mets are contenders.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 22:20 (four years ago) link

fwiw, much respect to the mets this year

they did some good things; they did some things that didn't work out. but they fuckin tried! extending degrom, letting alonso start on opening day, not trading syndergaard -- these are all good things! the deal with seattle doesn't look too great at the moment, but it was an effort to improve rather than purely dump salary. getting stroman was bold! they maybe *should* have traded wheeler at the deadline but it's awesome that they didn't.

41-25 in the second half is promising! mickey doesn't seem like a great manager, but the season has turned out a lot better than i thought it would three months ago

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 01:55 (four years ago) link

I agree with a lot of what Mookie says upthread. Great turn around in the second half, wish they could have gotten it together faster. JD Davis has been a great find, and his frazzled post-game walk off speech was one of the highlights of the year for me. So many concerns about pitching going forward (aside from Degrom/Lugo/Wilson) but I am looking forward to seeing the young core of hitters develop for the next 3 or so years.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 02:11 (four years ago) link

Right now the Mets are the dictionary definition of mediocre. They seem intent on losing all their remaining games, which would appropriately leave them at .500.
