The Interesting 2018 New York Mets (Who Will Probably Fall Into a Pile of Scorpions Again)

per Grant Brisbee

The Mets fell into a pile of scorpions last year, and there were no survivors, but you can understand why they wanted to build a lineup with a chance to be competent. The once-mighty Mets’ staff had just one healthy starter, and he was also the only one with an ERA under 4.50. They had five different pitchers who made more than 10 starts with an ERA over 5.19, and most of them were expected to be assets, not liabilities.

Even if you assume that the gremlins in Matt Harvey’s arm will never be sated, it’s easy to look at a rotation with some combination of Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz, Seth Lugo, Zack Wheeler, Robert Gsellman, and Harvey and think that at least four out of the six have a shot to help their team win in 2018. It’s not overly optimistic to hope for a rotation that can thrive with an average offense. The trick this offseason, then, was to build that average offense.

Meet the Mets, who will probably fall into a pile of scorpions again, but at least they seized on the slow offseason. They brought the market down to their payroll and made off with some good players. Made off. They made off with some good players....

They’re looking at an oddly shaped window and taking advantage of this shady offseason. We’ll see if the Twins follow through with their plans, or if the Nationals jump into the scrum. For now, though, the Mets are just about the only baseball team making free agency work for them. It’s what they needed to do.

If the plan works or not is kind of beside the point.

I don’t even know why the Mets keep that scorpion pile so close to Citi Field in the first place.

I liked the Mets getting Adrian Gonzales for not much money. I've always thought he was a pretty good all around hitter and I think if his back will hold up, I'd think he might have another productive year in him.
With having Todd Frazier and Michael Conforto, they should have options to spell him 1-2 days a week and play some lineup match up. I got to figure Jay Bruce is going to also see more games at first as his career goes on too.

This year will likely be a merry go round of starting pitchers going back and forth from AAA to the #5 starter spot. You've got Lugo, Matz, Wheeler, and Gsellman, who have all seemed worthy at some time, but have never put it together consistently. Will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

Rhine Jive Click Bait (Hadrian VIII), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 20:52 (six years ago) link

that includes minor league pitchers as well.

...Including De Leon (who hasn’t actually undergone the procedure yet), the Rays’ total of 10 surgeries in that span is the majors’ lowest, less than one-third that of the MLB-leading Mets — who, to be fair, haven’t had a pitcher above A-ball suffer that fate since 2015. Even so, using the start of 2016 as a cutoff, the Mets organization’s six TJs, though all from the low minors, place them third among the 30 teams, behind the Giants’ eight and the Reds’ seven. No other team has more than three, which is where the Rays will sit once De Leon goes under the knife.

they seem to be playing an unusual number of blowouts (both W and L)

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Monday, 30 April 2018 02:19 (five years ago) link

Matt Harvey was partying in LA the night before he had a wobbly time coming out of the bullpen for the Mets in San Diego, sources told Page Six.

Harvey attended the Thursday opening of hot Avra Beverly Hills, where guests included Halle Berry, Cindy Crawford, Ellen Pompeo and Selma Blair.

But a spy told us that Harvey was “out at the Avra opening stumbling around . . . He had to sit down at one point. He must have been so desperate to party, he came up from San Diego.”

Another guest said that among so many stars, “Nobody knew who Matt was,” but, “he was sober.”

Harvey — who’s been relegated to the bullpen — has gotten into hot water in the past for partying when he should’ve been prepping.

omar little, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 05:13 (five years ago) link

Harvey suddenly being a teetotaler but ALSO still partying every night is the kind of shocking twist that would fit into the Mets Canon

Was Alderson upset about Page Six report on Harvey? “Usually I get upset if a report is unexpected. I guess the short answer is no.”

Major League Baseball announced today that Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. has ruled on New York Mets pitcher Jenrry Mejia’s application for reinstatement from his permanent suspension under Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program (announced on February 12, 2016). Mejia will be allowed to resume participation in non-public workouts at Mets’ facilities following the 2018 All-Star break and will be eligible for a rehabilitation assignment with a Mets’ affiliate in mid-August. Provided that Mejia complies with certain conditions established by the Office of the Commissioner and agreed to by Mejia and the Players Association, Mejia will be reinstated from the Restricted List and will be eligible to resume all baseball activities beginning with 2019 Spring Training.

I expect Cabrera to go although I don't think they will get too much back. I think everyone wants to see McNeil get a shot at 2B. Would rather they not trade Wheeler since he is finally hitting his stride, but am completely expecting them to screw up that trade. There seems to be a need for Flores/Bautista/Mesoraco as everyday players at the moment, considering how depleted the outfield/catcher depth currently is. I guess you could make a case for Smith/Alonso at 1B.

MLB Trade Rumors:

The Mets feel that Zack Wheeler has “turned a corner” and would like a return in a trade which they feel is reflective of that improvement, tweets Fancred’s Jon Heyman. To this point, however, “no one has come even close” to meeting the team’s asking price, Heyman adds, making it seem likelier that Wheeler stays with the team through the deadline (and, quite likely then, into the offseason). With six shutout innings today, Wheeler now has a 3.20 ERA and a 63-to-23 K/BB ratio across his past 70 1/3 innings (11 starts) dating back to June 1. The 28-year-old is earning $1.9MM in 2018 and is controlled through the 2019 season.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 03:00 (five years ago) link

Jeff McNeil has had a truly odd career. McNeil, a 13th round pick in 2013 who didn’t even play high school baseball, struggled with injuries for most of his minor league career before finally keeping healthy in 2018 and breaking out. So it seems appropriate that McNeil would have an equally unique approach at the plate, one that is truly rare among MLB players.

To get a sense of the oddity of McNeil’s approach, look at this plot of zone-contact% versus zone-swing% among players from 2018 with at least 90 plate appearances (McNeil had 95 PA entering Monday).

https://cdn.theathletic.com/app/uploads/2018/08/21073840/z-swing-versus-z-contact.png

There usually exists a slight trade-off in terms of Z-Swing% versus Z-Contact%: swinging at everything in the zone generally results in more whiffs, while swinging at fewer zone pitches allows hitters to be more selective, resulting in higher contact. But McNeil has completely bucked that trend, swinging at more zone pitches than anyone in baseball in 2018 while making contact at the rate of more selective players.

In his young MLB career, McNeil has displayed elite plate protection: per Baseball Savant, only 9.4% of pitches to McNeil have resulted in a called strike, the 4th best figure in the MLB in 2018 among batters who have seen at least 300 pitches. Making frequent and consistent zone contact is a good skill to have – according to Baseball Savant, hitters have run a .388 wOBA on zone-contact pitches in 2018 (McNeil is at .379 on the year on those pitches) – and McNeil is one of the best in baseball at generating zone contact.

McNeil is simply a contact machine – he swings at everything, and he contacts everything. 50.3% of pitches to McNeil end in contact – the highest figure in the MLB (min 300 pitches). More pitches to McNeil have not reached the catcher’s glove than have. On contact, McNeil is running a .346 wOBA and a .352 xwOBA, both of which are below average (league wOBA on contact: .361, xwOBA: .377) – but since McNeil generates more contact than any other hitter, he provides above-average value at the plate (.339 wOBA compared to a league average .317 wOBA) despite below average quality-of-contact and walk rates.

jay bruce *needs* that playing time at first

mookieproof, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 18:42 (five years ago) link

so their reasoning was that a) between bruce and wilmer and dom smith, they couldn't get alonso any playing time at 1B, and b) he'd be better off getting some rest

a) they don't actually have to play jay bruce, a 31yo outfielder with an 80 OPS+ this season! they can play whoever they want! in any case, alonso won't be getting playing time anywhere else in september because the mets' upper minor league teams didn't make the playoffs

b) now they're sending him to the arizona fall league, which, while not a grind like the season, is not rest! also the guy has a .900 OPS in triple-a -- he doesn't need to be there. guys of his age and pedigree aren't sent to the AFL unless they missed significant time during the season or are trying to change positions. neither of which apply to alonso, who was named the mets' minor league defender of the month in july

it's not a service-time issue -- the extra time gained would be in his age-30 season. the mets just seem to have no clue

The Mets have a 23-year-old potential star first baseman. They don’t want to lose a season of control in a year where they’re going to lose the majority of their games. The Blue Jays have arguably received less backlash for being thrifty with Guerrero than the Mets have with Alonso, and there’s no doubt at all that Guerrero is the better player, now and in the future.

https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/david-wright-peter-alonso-and-the-law-of-metropolitan-frugality/

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 September 2018 20:15 (five years ago) link

the big difference is that alonso is four years older than vlad. when they do finally call him up next april 15, he'll be 24 and under team control until he's 31. we know players peak around 28, so he, like degrom, stands to lose big money by having free agency delayed into his 30s.

the vlad thing also sucks, but assuming the jays don't just leave him in the minors until they think they have a competitive team -- and it could be a while -- he'll still hit free agency at 27.

i don't know how much the union cares about this -- they're still minor leaguers, so they're not *in* the union -- but this is a serious screwing of its future members and yet another sign that the CBA is not working for the players

Going to the game today at Fenway. There are tons of Mets fans everywhere. Too bad we drew Oswalt pitching instead of anyone else, but I’m hopeful it won’t be a blowout. They haven’t played in Boston since 2009.

Michael F Gill, Saturday, 15 September 2018 18:03 (five years ago) link

no, Friday night was the blowout

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 15 September 2018 23:42 (five years ago) link

The parade of 7line Mets fans en route to Fenway probably stopped traffic for a good 10-15 minutes. Most people in their cars took it well, actually.

bye Hannity

The Mets make it official: they're moving their radio broadcasts from WOR 710 to WCBS 880 beginning next season, in a deal that runs through 2025.

Me too, might even get some rookie of the year votes with that .340/.394/.495 in 221 plate appearances so far. No need to look for a 2019 2B.

scorpion postmortem

Noah Syndergaard throws a four-hitter in Game 162. The Mets won consecutive 1-0 games over the Marlins to end things.

They went 31-20 over their last 51 games -- a bandage over a bullet hole, perhaps, but enough for the Mets to enter the offseason with optimism.

CARLSBAD, Calif. -- New York Mets minor leaguer Tim Tebow has earned a promotion to Triple-A Syracuse.

The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL quarterback hit .273 with six homers and 36 RBIs in 84 games this year for Double-A Binghamton. His season was cut short by a broken hamate bone in his right hand, which required surgery July 24.

"Timmy is not a guy you want to put restraints on," new Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said Wednesday. "If he sees a block, he's going to work that much harder to go overcome whatever somebody places on him. I believe in him."

Before he was hired by the Mets last week, Van Wagenen worked at CAA Baseball and represented the 31-year-old outfielder.

Tebow hit .301 in June for Binghamton and .340 in 15 games in July.

"Given the hamate injury he had last year, his momentum was stopped," Van Wagenen said. "The goal is if he can pick that up in spring training and hopefully get off to a good start in Syracuse, then we'll evaluate it when he's ready."

Tebow signed with Mets in late 2016, played in the Arizona Fall League and in 2017 hit .226 with eight homers and 52 RBIs in 126 games at two levels of Class A. He played in seven games for the Mets in spring training this year, hitting .056 (1-for-18).
